* Webcomic/TwoKinds has an overwhelming ammount of stories about the author's (inevitably male) OC getting Isekaied into Mekkan (usually a military man going through a teleporter), meeting an escaped keidran slave girl based on the author's favorite large predator who falls in love with him, and fighting the Templars with the gun he had in his back pocket when he got bamfed. Interacting with the canon events after meeting our expies of Trace and Flora are optional. You can expect BlackMagic to be largely ignored, despite it being a central part of the comic's story, and they will also probably meet a basitin (and an Eastern one at that) despite them being rare outside of their homelands.

* Toys/BIONICLE fanfics frequently included or focused on OriginalCharacters, usually Toa, but sometimes Matoran or Makuta (after it was revealed there was more than one). Stories focusing solely on these would often be set on an original island the writer made up, or one of the places mentioned but never visited in canon (especially once the canon map of the Matoran Universe was released). The expansion of ElementalPowers beyond the original 6 also led to Toa with these powers (like Magnetism, Plant Life, or Sonics, to name a few), and many characters had invented mask powers too.

* Barely a week after Tim Burton's Film/AliceInWonderland2010 movie came out in 2010, Fanfiction.Net was flooded (thirty fanfics in the new section and at least that many more in the general Literature/AliceInWonderland section) with fan authors who .
* Just look at any Film/Aliens fix-fic. At least 95% of them ignore the third and fourth films and have Mama Ripley, Papa Hicks, their adopted daughter Newt, and Uncle Bishop, returning safely to Earth and living a peaceful, happy life where they never encounter another xenomorph ever again.
* Many, if not most, Film/BrokebackMountain fics undo Jack's death and give him and Ennis a happy ending.
* Film/Labyrinth:
** Sarah will get wished away by Toby/her parents/her roommate/etc. putting her in Jareth's clutches or running the Labyrinth again. RomanceEnsues (a 99% chance).
** Jareth will get all possessive and try to whisk Sarah away as his 'bride'. Romance Ensues (a 99% chance).
** Either Jareth or Sarah is in Big Trouble and the other has to help him/her out. Chance of romance? 99%.
** Jareth is in trouble with the Fae Courts because he let someone succeed at running the Labyrinth.
** Original female character wishes her child/sibling/self away and winds up being romanced by Jareth.
** Adaptation of Ashe Ryder's Webcomic/Roommates comics.
* Post-film Film/LiveFreeOrDieHard fanfic often has hacker Matt moving in with John [=McClane=], since Matt's apartment was destroyed by terrorists. John lives alone and kinda lonely without his ex-wife and kids; Matt was shot point-blank in the knee, an injury that would require weeks to months of recovery with assistance. What better setup for fanfic roommates?
* Film/TheHangover fics have a very high tendency to have a previously unmentioned sister or female cousin of one of the four guys (usually Doug) join up with them and get involved with Alan, or more rarely Stu or Phil.
* Film/StarTrek2009 and sequels:
** There's the idea that Kirk received some of Spock Prime's memories of his friendship (or "friendship") with Kirk Prime during the mindmeld on Delta Vega is particularly common -- especially among Kirk/Spock shippers.
** It is commonly assumed that Gaila survived.
** Another favorite is to have the Kirk from the movie universe live through (or have lived through) the Tarsus IV massacre that formed the basis of the TOS episode "The Conscience Of The King". In most examples, the situation is worse in some way (or many ways) than the TOS version -- for one thing, virtually every fic of this type portrays Kodos as a willful monster rather than the WellIntentionedExtremist he was set up as in canon.
** A number of Spirk shippers have incorporated in Into Darkness as being a pivotal moment that leads to them becoming a couple.
*** One somewhat popular variation holds that Kirk's "I want you to know why I couldn't let you die" was actually going to be the preface to a confession of love for Spock, but when Spock offers an alternative explanation, he decides to take it (usually for reasons along the lines that it's probably better if Spock doesn't find out). When he , he eventually decides to tell Spock for real.
*** Going along with this one, a number of fics have jumped off the premise that Spock realizes (or realizes he can no longer deny) his own feelings for Kirk when he sees . This usually results in him breaking up with Uhura by the time .
* fanficcers have all got their own guesses about what happens to the title character after his involuntary dunk in the Sea of Simulation. Other very common plotlines involve getting Flynn back to analog after being trapped in the digital world for 20 years, and scenarios where Alan is brought to The Grid to repair his damaged software, if not full-blown Legacy AU fics where Alan ends up investigating the arcade himself and shot into the system. Some fic goes into Sam's other "pranks" on Encom. Others try to figure out how Quorra's going to adjust to analog. Plenty of fanfic guesses about what happened to Yori (if you ship Tron/Yori, she's alive. If you write slash, she's de-rezzed), or the cast of WesternAnimation/TronUprising (which had a BolivianArmyEnding). PatchworkFic with the "other sequel" isn't uncommon, either.
* Franchise/XMen
** Fix Fics that change the ending of Film/XMenFirstClass so that Xavier and Magneto never become estranged and/or Xavier is never paralyzed are ubiquitous in the fandom.
** Most fics seem to fall into this territory, whether it's filling one adaptation's blanks in with comicverse facts, or the spreading around of CharacterTics, or the presence of characters who technically shouldn't exist in this version. Most adaptations can't include the LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters the comics feature, and someone will always get mad that their favorite gets left out.
** Franchise/XMen fanfics occasionally give comicverse Gambit his first animated counterpart's habit of talking in third person.
* Franchise/StarWars:
** Star Wars fanfiction is particularly notable for its time travel fics, where characters from the original trilogy era (usually Luke, but sometimes Leia; never Han) inexplicably travel in time to the prequel era and warn their parents/Yoda/everyone about what Palps is and what he's up to. Time travel, Sith alchemy, or other means can also be used to cross eras, like bringing VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublic characters into the film eras.
** A stock plot of Star Wars fanfics is Dark Luke/Dark Leia/both Dark. In this case, either or both of the children was not hidden particularly well from daddy, or not at all, and is educated as a darksider.
** "What If" scenarios are very common. What if Qui-Gon Jinn lived to train Anakin? What if Ahsoka Tano accepted Jedi knighthood? What if Anakin was stuck in traffic and came too late to intervene in Palpatine's arrest? What if Padme lived?
** Since the saga's acquisition by Disney, most fanfics will, while setting themselves in whichever continuity the author prefers, still borrow freely whatever characters, ships, or other aspects of the other can fit their story.
** The Han/Leia ship on its own has quite a few ship-specific plots. Common tropes are Leia having a HeroicBSOD over Alderaan, both of them having to huddle together for warmth at some point on Hoth, the two of them going on dangerous missions together in between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, Leia reacting very badly to learning that Darth Vader is her biological father, and their reunion after escaping from Jabba's palace.
** Alternate universes in which Leia's parents survive the destruction of Alderaan are also relatively commonplace because they provide endless fuel for relationship drama between Leia and Han. Most of the time, the conflict comes from the fact that Leia is an UptownGirl to Han, and Bail (and sometimes Breha) Organa disapprove of this immensely. Sometimes the surviving Alderaanians aren't her parents, but are some other miscellaneous adult authority figures; either way, the effect is the same. A variant of this has said parents/authority figures return to Leia's life years after the original trilogy has ended, having missed virtually the whole war, and being baffled by both the galaxy around them and Leia's life choices. This concept has spawned multiple fan 'verses.
** The Sequel trilogy has plenty of RoleSwapAU where Rey and Kylo Ren switches alignments. Considering their respective heritage as a , this is not surprising.
** A common method of setting up a ship between characters who have never interacted in Canon, or even enemies is to have the two characters getting marooned in an unknown, remote planet after a crash landing that kills everyone else on the ship (though this rarely includes other main characters, who will inevitably come later to rescue the couple), thus forcing the two to work together to survive.
** The vast, vast majority of Film/RogueOne fanfic consists of "EverybodyLives", or at least "Some of them Live" [=AUs=].
* Film/StandByMe fics tend to have about four plots that get recycled over and over again. Chris gets laid = 99% of Stand By Me fanfiction right there:
** A) A girl moves to Castle Rock, meets the boys and the Cobras, and falls in love with Chris/Teddy/Ace/Eyeball.
** B) Retelling the Ray Brower trip with a girl accompanying the boys (Usually the fifth member of the gang the author adds and pretends was always there), and said girl eventually falls in love with Chris.
** C) A girl in the boys' gang, that Chris has known his whole life, and they're best friends and they fall in love with each other.
** D) Gordie and Chris realize their feelings for each other are now starting to go beyond friendship.
* Film/TheMatrix:
** Some post-Revolutions fics involve Neo and/or Trinity being brought back to life.
** Fics including character backstories.
** SailorEarth type of character joining the Neb.
* Easily a good portion of Film/KingsmanTheSecretService fanfic have this plot point: Valentine is a lousy shot and Harry, aka Galahad, is still alive. Often this goes hand in hand with another plot point: Harry becomes the new Arthur. This becomes HilariousInHindsight since a poster for the sequel Film/KingsmanTheGoldenCircle hinted and the trailer flat out confirms that Harry's alive after all.
* Film/JurassicWorld:
** Before the film even came out, fans started writing fanfics about Owen's relationship with his Velociraptors. Adorableness typically ensued.
** After the film's release, stories about Claire and Owen dealing with the aftermath of the titular park's possible closure became very common.
** Stories about Zach and Gray comforting each other over the incident.
** The odd "Gray gets hurt on the island" AU, usually in stories that basically ask "WhatIf the Indominus rex clawed Gray's leg instead of his bag?"
** Because of the epic climax, it's common to see continuation stories wherein Blue (the only surviving raptor) befriends the TyrannosaurusRex and sometimes the Mosasaurus.
** There are quite a few stories where Owen (or someone else) gets turned into a dinosaur (usually a Velociraptor) due to magic or super science.
* Nearly all of the few fanfics for Theatre/TheChildrensHour are of the FixFic variety, [[spoiler:interrupting Martha's suicide]] and pairing up Karen and Martha.
* Due to the SpinOffspring nature of the series, many Film/Descendants fanfics revolve around children of random Disney characters interacting with the existing cast. This can come in one of two flavors:
** A) retellings the first film, with the addition of a girl who is usually close friends with Ben (close enough that she becomes one of the first who learns about his proclamation regarding the Isle), not prejudiced against the villain kids, and who falls for either Jay or Carlos;
** B) Post-movie fics where more villain kids are brought over from the Isle.
* Film/Ghostbusters2016 fans who ship Erin/Holtzmann are very fond of writing stories in which Erin is a previously straight-identifying woman who gradually realises she's a lesbian / bi when faced with Holtzmann. They're also fond of EveryoneCanSeeIt (with Except Them being an optional extra) and "five times they did something shippy without realising" style fics.
* Much like the Series/Glee fics about Sugar being Brittany and Santana's KidFromTheFuture, following the release of Film/PitchPerfect 2, many stories emerged applying a similar concept to the character of Emily Junk, whom the shippers of Beca/Chloe have decided to portray as their future daughter.
* The 2003 Film/PeterPan film inspired a lot of fics where Wendy goes back to Neverland as an adult and finds herself attracted to Captain Hook.
* After the events of Film/Deadpool 2, the titular character travels back in time to fix any mistake from any franchise. Of course, it's always a crossover story.
* Film/MeanGirls: In many fics, Regina is a closeted ArmouredClosetGay (or rarer, bisexual) who's in love with Janis (who is either bi or gay). The drift between the two came because of their budding feelings for one another.
* Film/CharlieAndTheChocolateFactory:
** The film's plot with an extra child. They're usually female and a love interest to Charlie.
** Charlie and Wonka-centric fics set in the future. Some are platonic and some are Slash Fics.
** Fics about what happened to the kids after they left the factory.
** Next Gen Fics where an adult Charlie holds a contest to look for a heir.
* Film/Joker2019: Many fanfics explore the relationship between Arthur and Bruce (especially a teenaged Bruce). It's common for these fics to go with the theory that .
* Fan writers and artists for the Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy of Nolanverse Batman will often try to incorporate their favourite Bat-Rogues in the style of that series -- Comicbook/HarleyQuinn in particular is popular.
* Film/TheHobbit fandom is rife with Fix Fics that make it so that Thorin, Kili, and Fili all survive the events of the Battle of the Five Armies and Bilbo chooses to stay in Erebor rather than return alone to the Shire. An especially popular subset of this plot is Bilbo or one of the dwarves being sent back in time to fix things.
** For fic writers who want to stick closer to canon events but still give them a happier conclusion, a common alternative fix-it plot is to have Bilbo find some way to reunite with his dwarven friends after he dies despite hobbits and dwarves having separate afterlife places in the Tolkienverse.
** A number of fics focus on CultureClash between Bilbo and the dwarves with them humorously misunderstanding each other's cultural quirks, especially when it comes to courtship practices.
* Film/OnceUponATimeInMexico fandom features far too many fics involving Sands
* Film/PortraitOfALadyOnFire: Marianne/Héloïse is the fandom's OTP, even though in canon they end up as StarCrossedLovers. So, guess how many fanfics involve getting them back together.
* Several Film/TheRockyHorrorPictureShow fanfics involve Dr. Frank N Furter being brought back to life or are simply AU fanfics in which he doesn't die in the first place.
* More than a few pieces of Film/Scream fanfiction bring back, in addition to Sidney, Gale and Dewey,
* Film/SuckerPunch[='=]s fanfics have Babydoll surviving the lobotomy with memories, or avoiding it altogether. There are also a few with Rocket surviving being stabbed (which is understandable since it was never shown where she was stabbed and it may not have been a fatal injury).
* There's quite a lot of Film/WonderWoman2017 fanfic that involves Some of them even [[spoiler: do away with that pesky mortality thing that makes a relationship between a god and a human so awkward.]]
* Out of the 900 or so fanfics for Film/TheSocialNetwork, most are fix-it fics for Mark and Eduardo.

* Machinima/RedVsBlue fics all seem to be about a hitherto unknown Freelancer, someone new joining the Blood Gulch crew, or a hitherto unknown AI. Sometimes all three at once.
* Podcast/WelcomeToNightVale:
** One of the most common fanfics is "Carlos takes Cecil to meet his family". Expect varying levels of culture shock, homophobia and fluff.
** A popular fic concept is that Cecil isn't human in some way, and is terrified of how Carlos will react. Carlos, for his part, is totally fine with it. The smut is optional; the fluff is not.
* Music/Vocaloid:
** The inexplicably popular 'Len is the school playboy and Rin is either: A: bullied, B: nerdy, often in a way that seems suspiciously similar to the author or C: Tsundere. Len takes a bet to date her.
** Ever since the Crypton Vocaloids as a big family started cropping up in officially licenced works, other studios' voicebanks being grouped into family units has grown into a popular topic.
** Vocaloids being presented as living programs or actual singing androids on the market, and their new lives with their master.
** Gumi trying and failing to get into a loving relationship.
* WebAnimation/NekoSugarGirls fanworks dealing with Koneko-chan secretly being in love with Raku-chan became ever present after the final episode.
* WebAnimation/CampCamp:
** First and foremost, there's "Dadvid", a section of fanfic where David (often with Gwen at least somewhat involved) adopts one or more of the campers. Max is by far the most popular one, but pretty much every camper is a candidate. The circumstances that result in David gaining custody of one of the campers varies depending both on the story in question and which camper is being discussed; for example, Dadvid with Max generally involves the latter having been thrown into foster care or running away from an abusive home. Dadvid can and has been combined with all the [=AUs=] below.
** And then we have "Momwen", which loosely follows the same formula as Dadvid, just with Gwen as the lead. This almost always involves David at least eventually but can and has involved an OC friend or roommate of Gwen's who acts as a babysitter (they're usually nothing more than a babysitter or Honorary Aunt unless they're David).
** "Dadvid" has a popular variant where teen David and Gwen come in contact with and takes in an abandoned baby or toddler Max; these typically feature a mix of tooth-rotting adorableness and heartbreak and like the main version, can be mixed with most [=AUs=]. This can be done with Momwen but it's less common for Gwen to take the lead in the Teen Parent scenario.
** Less popular but still liked are "The Millers adopt X", with Max continuing to be the most popular option (especially if he was adopted pre-canon).
** [=AUs=] where Max is Gwen's biological kid are fairly popular. Most have David as the biological father but there are several where the biological father is an asshole who ran out on them. In the latter case. David often (but not always) ends up winning both Gwen and Max over.
** Max's parents are total FanficFuel since we don't know anything except that he doesn't think they care about him. They can range from wanting to care but not knowing how, being distant and not around much but not uncaring, merely emotionally and verbally abusive or actively causing him physical harm with all kinds of variance to why they're whatever they are. It's also become popular that Max's neglectful parents are not his biological parents because of the UnfortunateImplications of POC parents being neglectful/abusive enough to require their child's removal and adoption by a white man (David) or white couple (the Millers).
** "Jasper lived!", which is common with Jasper/David shipping (and sometimes Gwen thrown into the mix). "Adopted Max" also frequently features in this type of AU.
** "Daniel returns for revenge on Max, David or both!" This usually ends up with the target/s of Daniel's rage being put through the wringer emotionally and frequently physically; they can also end awful or bittersweet.
** Daniel is granted a chance to redeem himself. Frequently features Daniel/David.
** "Evil!Daniel tries to break [Character] into a loyal cultist." Max or David are the most popular, but anyone is fair game.
** "Werewolf David" is a popular AU, and is almost always tied in with David/Gwen shipping due to the latter's fetish for monster men. May or may not involve the campers and Gwen herself being supernatural creatures as well.
** "Nonhuman David" is a pretty popular AU concept, with "Monster Under The Bed" and "Dragon" being other ideas the fans love.
** Medieval [=AUs=] are popular and feature a variety of central characters.
** Reverse [=AUs=] are popular and come in the following types.
*** Gender Swap: Characters are the opposite gender. Can be as desired but most [=AUs=] have the entire cast flipped around.
*** Age Swap: Max, Neil and Nikki are the counselors while David and Gwen are the campers. Other characters can be placed in roles as needed or desired.
*** Personality Swap: Characters' personalities get swapped around and/or flipped. This can be as desired though the general consensus is that David's personality would go to both Gwen and Max.
*** Morality Swap: Characters' moralities are reversed. Interestingly this doesn't necessarily mean that their better traits go away completely as "Serial Killer David", a popular version of this, is still David; just as a serial killer.
** The campers frequently end up in high school together and Max and Neil will go to the same school if nothing else. Antics vary but shipping is frequent.
** Harrison gets kicked out by his parents over the vanishing of his brother, whether he's unable to undo it (the more common version) or because they don't want anything to do with him once he manages to fix it. His TrueCompanions find out and are none too pleased.
** If Nerris and Harrison aren't shipped together, it's becoming popular for her to get her parents to adopt her rival; Harrison typically is awkward about it, especially at first, but ultimately couldn't be happier.
** One of the campers ends up in an abusive dating relationship and the others try to save them. Believe it or not, despite being popular as a root for shipping, the story doesn't always go that route.
** Someone is revealed to be trans and the characters react to this. David is by far the most popular option, with Max as a close second (and in most stories where Max is trans, David is as well) but other characters such as Harrison, Nerris and even Gwen are fair game too. Stories where Max is trans frequently feature his parents being transphobes (he's not the only one who gets transphobic family, just the most popular).
** Camper Gwen, as in "Gwen was at Camp Campbell with David and/or Jasper" stories, are well-liked.
** "Wood Scout Max" stories, where he ends up at the Wood Scouts somehow (often being kidnapped again or by having the canon "loss" of Jermy be thwarted so Pikeman takes Max), are popular and frequently end up with lots of ColdBloodedTorture and pain for Max; the final rescue usually ends up being heartwarming though.
** Max is the victim of a violent crime (which may or may not have also left him orphaned) and the other characters help him recover. This plotline can be used for other characters, with characters who are part of minorities being the more popular options but anyone is fair game though exactly what the crime/attack is varies depending on who the victim is.
** Neil's father ends up marrying one of the other single parents. Candy, Nikki's mother, was popular for a long time but is now starting to have to compete with Mrs. Nurfington.
** Rehashes of canon episodes with UnfortunateImplications either just addressed or outright fixed, such as the Eggsitting Plot being done with "single parent" or "three parents, one child" options.
** Dolph either has his Nazi tendencies actively addressed or comes to the realization that he's hurting people on his own. Alternately the author just chooses to ignore him altogether.
** Harrison's magic goes haywire. This can be completely original material, which alternates between hilarious, Tearjerker heartbreaking or nightmarish, or a ForWantOfANail scenario from canon where the haywire magic makes things go very differently.
** Crossovers with WebAnimation/XRayAndVav are very popular. Mogar and David are frequently shipped together with the rest of the casts of both series being quirky honorary family. The Mad King and Daniel frequently team up, though it doesn't go well for them.
* Website/Wattpad is known across the internet as a website full of specific plots that appear in hundreds of users' fanfictions, whether it be getting kidnapped by your crush, being sold to a handsome gang leader by your poor parents, or a retelling of the author's favourite movie with themselves and their celebrity crush. Strangely, they all seem to star bad boys and/or boy bands. Also, they all begin with the main character (always a girl) getting out of bed to look at herself in the mirror and think that she isn't pretty enough to have friends/a boyfriend.
* After the show's SeriesFauxnale, WebAnimation/Eddsworld fics in which Tord returns a second time have become very common. He'll usually be back either to take revenge on the others for destroying his giant robot and ruining his world domination plans, or because he's remorseful for attacking them and wants to make amends. More often than not however, it's a mix of both, with Tord returning for revenge, getting defeated and undergoing a HeelFaceTurn with Edd, Matt and (almost always begrudgingly) Tom's help.
* A common crossover plot for WebAnimation/HazbinHotel involves a morally grey character from the other half of the crossover dying, arriving in Hell, and moving into the hotel.
* WebVideo/DoctorHorriblesSingAlongBlog is prone to fixfics that
* There's loads for "The Review Must Go On", whether it's Donnie's friends refusing to let him go or trying to explain why Critic had suddenly turned evil.

* The ComicBook/New52 reboot has many fans trying to find a way to go back to the old continuity. Fics range from it being a hallucination caused by a villain to Donna Troy refusing to be erased from existence again and returning to dismantle the universe. DC themselves have attempted something of a fix themselves with the transition to Rebirth - among other things, bringing back the original Superman (married to Lois Lane and all) as well as the red-headed Wally West.
** Damian Wayne's death in the New 52 spawned quite a few. Usually involving the use of a Lazarus Pit, for obvious reasons.

** Many a FixFic is built around Orpheus and Eurydice reuniting in some way. Some simply have Orpheus not turn around at the end, or run with the idea of the story being retold by having the characters be aware of and break the endless loops, allowing them to be happy. Post-canon Hades/Persephone reconciliation fics tend to include Hades bending the rules so Orpheus and Eurydice can reunite, while others have them reunite after Orpheus dies like in some versions of the myth.myth.
** Eurydice picking up where Orpheus left off post-canon and campaigning for better treatment for the workers is a popular fanfic topic, with some having her lead a resistance against Hades while others have her working with him and Persephone to bring change.
