Some parents in RealLife do in fact have children who are significantly lighter or darker than the parents expect without any hanky-panky being involved. [[http://bodyodd.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/07/17/1205061.aspx Sometimes]] the infant's parents are of different races, while sometimes both parents are themselves mixed race. In one instance in the Netherlands, a white couple who underwent IVF found themselves the parents of a black infant because the lab hadn't sanitized its equipment adequately after performing an IVF procedure for a black couple. It was also not uncommon for light-skinned African-Americans who "passed" as whites to father or mother children that were darker than they were; this could be dangerous, especially if the other parent didn't know beforehand that the other parent wasn't white. Or so Old Wives Tales claimed, it was in fact improbable - see discussion for the genetics involved.

*** Though this is a good reason why you shouldn't automatically assume a blue-eyed baby means cheating; there are plenty of babies, particularly non-white babies, born with brown eyes.
*** Actually, since blue eyes are a recessive trait and therefore "skip" generations, it's perfectly possible for two brown-eyed parents to have a blue-eyed kid as long as both carry the blue gene. If they don't, though, it's either a spontaneous mutation or cheating.
