Sometimes, a character may be this for a reason - ie they may DoWellButNotPerfect since doing perfect will be too exhausting, invite TallPoppySyndrome against them, or just find it more rewarding to only occasionally excel. After all, if one always excels, then that's what others will expect of you. Sometimes a character may cite reasons like this in a more cynical work.

* Nate from ''ComicStrip/BigNate'' gets around average grades (Except for Social Studies), yet on multiple occasions showcases that he's ''amazingly'' smart ''and'' dedicated whenever he has the motivation. Among these are him memorising an entire book of brain teasers just to annoy Gina, putting elaborate efforts into pranks, and being able to pull all sorts of trivia out of nowhere. In one strip, the top kids in the class are paired with him for a book report - and they tell him that his average grade of a "C" wouldn't cut it. Nate proceeds to bring in a very well done book report that gets all of them an "A". When asked why he doesn't ''normally'' do this type of work, Nate points out that he won't be rewarded as much if that is the norm for him. He even manages to get a 99 on a test once, and points out he doesn't have as much fun since he already knows the answers.

** Wally may not actually be brilliant, but he's at least a case of ''Competent'', but Lazy. He could achieve a lot more if his immediate superior was someone other than the one and only PointyHairedBoss. The original Wally, in his very first appearance, is brilliant but trying to get fired to get a company severance package. Creator/ScottAdams has said this scenario was ''exactly'' based on real life . More than one time he has shown that his true ambition in life is to be ''useless'', not lazy; in fact, he tends to put more effort into creative new ways of avoiding anything resembling a task than any amount that could possibly be demanded by said task. He once joined golf to learn new ways of being useless.
