Sometimes a EroticDream will involve homosexual relations, even if the dreaming character is straight. And when this trope is applied, ''especially'' if the dreaming character is straight (or thought themselves straight).

Often if another cast member appeared in the dream, that person will find out about it and will feel, if anything, more homosexual anxiety than the dreaming character. There will probably be some discussion of how this dream does not necessarily mean that the dreaming character really is gay -- but likely this will not be reassuring for any characters involved in the dream.

Awkwardly gay dreams are mostly used for comedy but occasionally will be used for ShipTease or as part of WillTheyOrWontThey.

This trope stems from HomoeroticSubtext as well as EroticDream. Also, whatever weird crap your unconscious mind can dish up. This is of course TruthInTelevision but people usually [[ThatDidntHappen don't want to talk about it]]. Compare StupidSexyFlanders.

Everyone knows RealDreamsAreWeirder. For every [[DreamingOfThingsToCome prophetic dream]] there is, there's at least twenty that are complete nonsense, concocted by the inscrutable forces of your mind. Giant kittens can overrun cities, purple carrots can fly through space, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking you can temporarily depart from your heterosexuality]].

The EroticDream is a strange thing, and one of its many byproducts is causing straight characters to dream up relationships with members of their own gender. Homoerotic dreams, like most, are (probably) completely meaningless in reality. That won't stop the character who experienced the dream from feeling unnerved by their bizarre fantasies, causing them to have a brief crisis over their sexuality. It may prove even more awkward for the unassuming character who appeared in the dream, in the scenario that they find out.

This trope is more often than not PlayedForLaughs, riffing on the discomfort surrounding one's own assumed sexuality. However, such a dream could also unveil a character's subconscious feelings, displaying the desires that they unknowingly feel. This can serve to undermine their heterosexuality and pave the way to a LGBTAwakening.

* After meeting Sarah in ''Literature/PatienceAndSarah'', Patience has a dream where her sister-in-law Martha is topless. In the dream, Patience places her mouth on Martha's bosom, which Martha encourages. It's implied that Patience has unknowingly been harboring feelings for Martha for several years.
* In ''Literature/TheEpicOfGilgamesh'', Gilgamesh has dreams of "caressing like a wife" an axe and a meteor which according to Ninsun both represent Enkidu.
