* BlackHumor: After noting how nervous her friend Selianne is about being near Rain, Ellysetta quips to herself that it's a good thing that Sel isn't going to attend the wedding, because "It wouldn't look good to have her Honoria faint from fear of the groom during the ceremony. Of course, it would look even worse to have the groom murder the Honoria because he read her mind and [[BerserkButton discovered she was part Eld]]." This becomes a double FunnyAneurysmMoment later in the book, when [[spoiler: Rain temporary leaves Ellysetta when he thinks that she's part Eld, Selianne is controlled against her will by Elden magic, and then dies by TakingTheBullet of an Eld fireball.]]

* MedievalStasis: UpToEleven: The Fey king's war armor was made by the Tairen in the Time Before Memory, which ended ''one million years'' before the events of the series, so the Fey have been using plate and mail armor for literally over a million years without ever developing firearms. That being said, the Celierians do have print, running water, and spectacles, meaning the setting is at least Late Medieval.

* InTheBlood: What a lot of characters seem to believe, if the world really supports this assumption remains to be seen.

In the distant past, a cataclysmic, continent-wide war later called the Mage Wars swept across the world of [[ConstructedWorld Eloran]], drawing the various races into an extended and bloody struggle. The primary combatants of the war were the Eld, a long-lived race of human-like mortals dedicated to [[AmbitionIsEvil mastering all magics and conquering the world]], and the Fey, a race of [[OurElvesAreBetter wonderful, beautiful, heroic, dedicated, proud, silvery luminescent-skinned]] champions of light.

* BlackAndWhiteMorality: One of the most extreme possible examples, due to the utter disparity between the [[OurElvesAreBetter Fey]] and the [[EvilSorcerer Eld]]. GrayingMorality occurs, showing that many Fey hate the Eld [[FantasticRacism to irrational levels]] and the Eld themselves are not so much evil as corrupted by their governing mages.

* OurElvesAreBetter: The race that are actually called Elves are most similar to Wood Elves. The Fey can be thought of as the High Elven equivalent. The literal Elves are so unspeakably arrogant that even the Fey regard them as nonsensical mystics.
