About 300 years before the story begins, Westeros was finally united under one man as a man from Valyria, Aegon Targaryen, called "Aegon TheConqueror," managed to get the fealty of (six of the) Seven Kingdoms. He managed to succeed where others had failed because Valyrians are {{Dragon Rider}}s, and flying flamethrowers have the edge over medieval knights in most cases. He founded a new capitol, crowned himself king, and ''[[BrotherSisterIncest married his sisters]],'' intending to preserve the MysticalWhiteHair and MysteriousPurple eyes of Valyria, and to prove that Targaryens are above the laws of gods and men. That may be true, but they are not above the laws of genetics, and by the year 285 [[HitSoHardTheCalendarFeltIt After Conquest]], RoyalInbreeding had done a number on House Targaryen; the secrets of dragon husbandry had been lost, and the most recent king, Aerys II, was called "[[TheCaligula the Mad]]" because he, uh, [[BluntYes was]]. A young lord named Robert Baratheon had his fiancée Lyanna abducted by Aerys's son; when King Aerys learned of this, he perpetrated a RevealingCoverup by simply having all of the fiancée's friends murdered. Robert, his BestFriend Lord Eddard Stark (also his fiancée's older brother), and their SurrogateParent Lord Jon Arryn all rebelled, and the resulting CivilWar, the "War of TheUsurper," ended with the downfall of House Targaryen and King Robert on the throne. ...Though without Lyanna, who died during the war.

Set in a medieval fantasy world, the series primarily follows various political and supernatural threats to the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, a vast nation still recovering from a civil war that ousted the previous ruling dynasty of three centuries, the Targaryens.

The plot begins by focusing on the Stark family, an ancient and venerable noble house that rules the frigid and sparsely populated North. Forced to journey south and enter the unfamiliar territory of the capital, King's Landing, the family must suddenly contend with deadly court politics, intrigue, plots, feuds and mysteries from a host of rival factions.

As the nobles busy themselves playing the game of thrones, a supernatural threat looms beyond the Wall to the far north that threatens to destroy the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and drive the continent into a permanent winter. Meanwhile, the last Targaryen scions, now in exile, have their sights set on reconquering the Seven Kingdoms and reclaiming their family's throne with fire and blood.

Set in a medieval fantasy world, the series primarily follows various political and supernatural threats to the Seven Kingdoms of takes place on Westeros, a vast nation still recovering hemisphere-tall continent stretching from the Lands of Always-Winter at the north to the equatorial deserts of Dorne in the south. Westeros has historically been divided into "Seven Kingdoms," which warred against each other but banded together to face outside threats.

That may be true, but they are not above the Targaryens.

The plot begins

About fifteen years later,
the unfamiliar territory of story actually begins, quickly devolving into ThreeLinesSomeWaiting.

* Across the narrow sea on the nearby continent of Essos,
the last two Targaryens live. Aerys II's son, Prince Viserys, is an ImpoverishedPatrician, his sister Daenerys a PrincessInRags. They've been trying to get someone to give them an army, against the promise of lavish future rewards, so that Viserys can finally reclaim his birthright; as the series starts, Viserys finally finds someone to take him up on the offer. According to their grandfather, King Jaehaerys II, "madness and greatness are two sides of the same coin. Every time a new Targaryen scions, now is born, he said, the gods toss the coin in exile, have the air and the world holds its breath to see how it will land." In Viserys's case, it becomes clear that the coin landed, LikeFatherLikeSon, on the "RoyalBrat BigBrotherBully" side. But his sister Daenerys was BornDuringAStorm and the RoyaltySuperpower runs true in her veins, as proved when she -- FirstEpisodeSpoiler -- ''hatches dragons'', [[TheMagicComesBack returning magic to the world]]. There's more to her destiny than it seems.
* And of course no one in Westeros is paying attention to ''any'' of this because of a massive SuccessionCrisis called the "War of Five Kings," caused when the legitimacy of Robert's heirs, sired in the intervening years, are put into question. Three men -- Robert's eldest son Joffrey, and his younger brothers Renly and Stannis -- claim the Iron Throne, while two others simply seek to return
their sights set on reconquering regions of Westeros to self-rule. The result is a bloody, chaotic CivilWar that strikes at the Seven Kingdoms and reclaiming their family's throne exact wrong time, with fire and blood.
everyone forgetting the motto of Lord Eddard Stark's house: "[[AStormIsComing Winter is coming]]."

* ''Literature/TalesOfDunkAndEgg'': Novellas set 90 years before the main series. Three tales ("The Hedge Knight", "The Sworn Sword" and "The Mystery Knight") have been published, but Martin intends for this to be an ongoing series chronicling the pair's entire life together. These have also been adapted as graphic novels.
* ''Literature/TheWorldOfIceAndFire'': An in-universe history book and encyclopedia [[FictionalDocument written by Maester Yandel as a gift to King Robert]], in which is compiled the history and culture of their world. The Seven Kingdoms receive the most love (both individually and as a single entity under the Targaryens), but just about every named location receives attention of greater or lesser degree.
* ''Literature/FireAndBlood'': Expanding on the idea of ''The World of Ice and Fire'', ''Fire and Blood'' is a history book focused on the Targaryen dynasty written from an in-universe perspective. Originally intended as one volume, it has since been split into two, with the first volume (covering history up to the death of the Targaryen dragons) being released in November 2018. The book features new content alongside text directly lifted and/or expanded from other releases (for instance, this book's account of Aegon's conquest is largely identical to the version in ''The World of Ice and Fire''). Elements from this compendium were earlier published separately, and grouped on TV Tropes under the fan-title of ''Literature/ArchmaesterGyldaynsHistories'':
** ''The Princess and the Queen, or, The Blacks and the Greens'': A novella written as an InUniverse history text, narrating the events of the Dance of the Dragons, a war of succession between rival Targaryen branches 170 years before the time of the main series. Published in the 2013 short story anthology ''Dangerous Women'', edited by Martin and Gardner Dozois. The print novella was heavily edited due to length restraints in the anthology, only containing about 30,000 words out of 60,000 Martin wrote on the Dance of the Dragons at the time. Subsequent novellas were shorter and only had a few bits omitted here and there. Notably, TPATQ came out a year ''before'' the World book, so it was the first time fans were exposed to this new, expansive prequel era. All other prequel eras were at least summarized in the 2014 World book.
** ''The Rogue Prince, or, The King's Brother'': A novella narrating the exploits of Prince Daemon Targaryen, including the events leading to "The Princess and the Queen". Published in the 2014 short story anthology ''Rogues'', edited by Martin and Dozois.
** ''The Sons of the Dragon'': A novella about the CainAndAbel reigns of Aegon I's two sons, first his weakling older son Aenys and then his brutal tyrant younger son Maegor, and the Faith Militant uprisings against both of them. Published in the 2017 short story anthology ''Book of Swords'', also edited by Martin and Dozois (sadly, Dozois died a few months after it was published).

* ''Literature/TalesOfDunkAndEgg'' - Novellas set 90 years before the main series. Three tales ("The Hedge Knight", "The Sworn Sword" and "The Mystery Knight") have been published, but Martin intends for this to be an ongoing series chronicling the pair's entire life together. * ''Literature/TheWorldOfIceAndFire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones'': A series encyclopedia, co-written by Martin, Garcia, and Antonsson. The book is framed as a history written by one Maester Yandel and presented to King Robert as a gift.

Garcia Jr. and Linda Antonsson, the admins of popular fansite Westeros.org. Basically, a way to present a few extra notes here and there that didn't fit into the print World book.

[[folder:Adaptations]]
* The series was adapted for television as ''Series/GameOfThrones'' which despite borrowing the title of the first book is an adaptation of the entire series, and between Seasons 1-4 adapted the first three books with reasonable faithfulness. The unusual circumstances of its conception and genesis (an adaptation of an as-yet incomplete series of novels), means that the later seasons have [[CompressedAdaptation compressed books 4-5]], and have now [[OvertookTheManga moved past the chronology of the published books]]. The show is set to finish before the author completes his books. Martin has been supportive of the project, writing the screenplays for one episode per season (for Seasons 1-4)[[note]]He used to work in television; ironically, he returned to novels because he was tired of budget constraints limiting his imagination. This came back to bite him in the posterior when he was assigned to adapt the episode that contains one of the biggest and most complicated battles of the civil war; he noted with irony that the author had made the scene too damn big and expensive.[[/note]]. He has also given Weiss and Benioff the outlines for the remaining books in the series, which will come in handy now that they have outpaced him.
* A video game, ''VideoGame/AGameOfThronesGenesis'', has dramatized some of the stuff that's AllThereInTheManual, covering the last thousand-or-so years of Westerosi history. It was joined by a negatively received video game, also called ''VideoGame/GameOfThrones''. A browser-based online {{MMORPG}} called ''Game Of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms'' is also in the works.
* [[VideoGame/TelltalesGameOfThrones Another video game]], this one made by Creator/TelltaleGames and taking place in the TV series' continuity.
* A {{table top|Games}} RolePlayingGame was licensed through Guardians of Order. Another one by Creator/GreenRonin and [[http://greenronin.com/sifrp/ currently has three books released, a rulebook, a sourcebook, and a licensed adventure]].
