* Phil Leotardo is openly sadistic, volatile, brutal, and confrontational, utilizes bullying and fear against his victims, [[spoiler: sets Vito up to be tortured and killed, orders his henchmen to kill Bobby and Silvio, and before that, he threatens to inflict the cruelest possible death upon Tony Blundetto]. His brutality makes Tony Soprano himself look like a sane boss in comparison.

* Livia Soprano, Tony's abusive mother. Livia derives little pleasure save to hurt and makes others miserable. She psychologically tortures Tony as much as she can and has a hit put out on him in revenge for trying to put her in a nursing home. Her abuse of Tony has been there for years.

* Ralph Cifaretto. Given that he's a toxic, socially repugnant individual [[spoiler: willing to kill his own pregnant girlfriend with his bare hands]], it's not hard to imagine that Ralph was deliberately written to be unlikable. Heck, even Tony and Paulie hate him. [[spoiler: He tried to be better after his son's accident, but even that did not stop Tony's bubbly resentment, which culminates with him brutally murdering Ralph]].

* Paulie "Walnuts" Gualtieri. He has zero regard for human life, [[{{jerkass}} shows a toxic personality]], [[PoliticallyIncorrectVillain says some racist and misogynistic things]], murdered a waiter in cold blood, murdered Nucci's friend (an old woman) after he attempted to steal her money and she caught him in the act, and most of his crimes are nothing to do with the business of the mob. Despite his PetTheDog moments, Paulie is one of the most unlikable characters.

* Christopher Moltisanti, more and more as the series progresses. Not only was he an abusive boyfriend and fiancee towards Adriana, beating her and strangling her to the point of near-death, but there were also many instances where he was outright egocentric, indifferent, impulsive, and unnecessarily cruel; often killing or hurting people for very petty reasons. By the time of [[spoiler: his death, Tony had realized that Christopher was TheLoad to him and everyone else.]]

* From "[[Recap/TheSopranosS3E5AnotherToothpick Another Toothpick]]", Salvatore "Mustang Sally" Intile, as expected from a [[AxCrazy psychopathic]] DomesticAbuser. Ralph Cifaretto says ([[EvenEvilHasStandards with disgust, to boot]]) that Salvatore threw a hot dog vendor off the second floor mezzanine at Giants Stadium [[DisproportionateRetribution for serving too many onions on his hot dog]]. He is callous and has a morbid sense of humor, joking about the attack on Bryan Spatafore.

Besides that, he has numerous observations by other characters that he cares about no one but himself. * The two Jasons -- Jason Gervasi and Jason Parisi. A duo of irresponsible, selfish, lazy, sadistic {{jerkass}}es. One of their cruelest acts was in "Walk Like a Man", where they used A.J.'s SUV to take a gambler into the woods and torture him by pouring sulfuric acid on his toes.
* Jesus Rossi, "The Employee of the Month", managed to become one of the most despised characters in the show in a matter of minutes after brutally raping Dr. Melfi in a parking garage. What makes this even worse is that he is eventually ''released'' after being arrested simply because there was not enough evidence. Melfi has a chance to hire Tony to assassinate him in revenge but she decides not to which makes Rossi one of the few characters in the show to be an outright KarmaHoudini.

Not really. A Hate Sink is a completely hateful character. Despite his ruthlessness, Tony Soprano has redeeming features.

* Subverted with Tony Soprano himself. In many episodes, it became evidently clear that Tony was meant to be despised by the audience for his little regard for human life (sometimes bordering in AxCrazy), [[EvilIsPetty pettiness]], and the [[{{jerkass}} rude, impolite way he treats his comrades, friends and family]]. Though he DOES have PetTheDog moments, these tend to be rather rare. The ''Los Angeles Review of Books'' pointed this:
-->"It is a tribute to the show’s complexity — and Gandolfini’s skill — that Tony’s charisma is gradually dissipated by the mounting disgust we begin to feel for him. One can’t help but notice how this mob boss, a killer to the core, gradually chokes out the lives of those he is closest to. It is a deeply ambivalent affection, if any, we end up feeling for Tony. And yet, it is difficult to entirely let go of our attachment to him, the way it would be difficult to detach oneself from a toxic family member."

This show, well-known for portraying TheMafia in a very [[HateSink unsympathetic]] light (no romanticism whatsoever), several viewers began to believe that this trope was the intention of the show. Given that, it's not hard to imagine that many of the characters were written to be unlikable.
