* While trying to track down A-Kira, Near requests the security camera footage from Sakura TV from the time Ryuk was there, reasoning that the most efficient way to identify A-Kira is to follow Ryuk back to him. His baleful glare of thwarted irritation at a model of Ryuk when Rester and Matsuda tell him that they can't trace Ryuk's movement because he ''traveled underground'' is hilarious, but the kicker is what he does next: He presses a key on his laptop and ''blows it up'' with an even more annoyed look on his face. Near spends most of the chapter in various stages of tired and annoyed resignation, because he's not entirely sure it's a crime to ''sell'' the notebook, and A-Kira's plan is so well-thought-out and cautious that every plan Near comes up with is accounted for. By the end, he's just enjoying the show, and more disappointed that he won't be able to meet a fellow player on his own intellectual level.

* After Mello gets blown up, Near figures that he's probably going to make contact with an [=SPK=] member to get his investigation back on track, and between Rester, Gevanni, and Lidner, he gives Lidner a 70% chance of being Mello's choice, because he'd have the best chance pf overpowering her if needed. He tells them to put cameras in their homes, wear a wire at all times, and cooperate with the volatile Mello if they're willing to bait him out like this-- and if they're not, to not leave headquarters. He adds, "I'm scared, so I'm not going to go outside."

** Near's interrogation is also hilarious, because it's a total dead end. Aizawa and Ide have tailed Mogi from [=LA=] to [=NYC=], and they plus Light, Matsuda, ''and'' Mello (who orchestrated this by suggesting Mogi come meet with ''him'', soon after he caused Soichiro's death) are all listening in through Mogi's cell phone-- Mello because he's called Mogi, and Light and the taskforce through the cell phone sharing system. Because Mello brought him to Near, Mogi assumes they're working together and resolves to not say a single thing. So he doesn't. Near begs and cajoles him, even telling him it's all because he and Mello admired L so much, even going so far as to suggest to Mello that Kira is controlling Mogi, whether through the notebook or more subtle manipulation. Because he can track Mogi's cellphone, this is when Light sends Demegawa and the the mob of Kira worshippers to attack Near and his group, and when Near makes it rain 100 dollar bills to distract them-- which just confirms to Near that L = Kira. He tells Rester to gag Mogi, calls up the taskforce, and announces that Mogi just died of a heart attack to cause the taskforce members to doubt L and hopefully share information with him. When Aizawa does just that, he immediately cops to it, but Aizawa asks to speak with Mogi himself, who confirms he's fine-- while Near exclaims "So you ''can'' talk!"
