* Series/MidsomerMurders: Nastily subverted in "Death and Dreams"; the killer appears to have this, but doesn't...instead, they all have a rampaging and lethal version of the UsefulNotes/OedipusComplex (a more literal Freudian excuse). The three children of Barnaby's psychiatrist friend saw their father die in a climbing accident, which we're lead to believe is the cause of their obsession with keeping their mother with them. Then it turns out the two older children Patricide killed their father for daring to be affectionate with their mother!

This resembled a song by Music/BobDylan, with him later becoming fixated on murder ballads, recreating murders from them while he targeted people who had suffered severe losses like him, believing that by murdering them he's ending their pain.

** Bayliss is violently protective of children, and he slips into being a RabidCop whenever a case involving a dead child happens, often leading to him inflicting PoliceBrutality. Season 5 reveals this is because he was raped throughout his childhood by his uncle, and his emotionally abusive father never believed him.
** It's implied Felton's abrasiveness and alcoholism stem from a dysfunctional childhood with a neglectful father.

* Series/Clarice: was forced to choose by his father whether he or his little brother Agust would get used a gas test subject. He chose Agust. The gas killed Agust, which messed him up forever. Later he became obsessed with proving himself strong, unlike Agust (who had a disability) but his own genetic disorder prevented him having any more than one child. It didn't stop him kidnapping and forcibly impregnating many women in hopes of getting a second success though (killing them after they had "failed"). Evil though he's become, it's possible to understand that could twist him, and feel a little sympathetic.

** Series/KamenRiderZeroOne reveals that the reason Gai Amatsu became a sociopathic corporate executive as an adult is because his father told him to study more and play with his toy robot dog less. Yes you read that right. While Gai's dad certainly wasn't a very emotionally available person, it's a bit of a jump for Gai to go from a happy and cheerful kid to a psychopath who tortures people on a whim as an adult, yet it's used to make Gai seem sympathetic and .
** A notable contrast to Gai is Orteca in Series/KamenRiderRevice, who arguably has a much more legitimate Freudian Excuse in that [[spoiler:as a child he was isolated from his peers due to his intelligence and was physically abused by his father]]. Unlike Gai however, Orteca is shown to be much more irredeemable as a character and his childhood is used to contextualize his motives and current personality rather than excuse them.

Ambiguous Disorder is not a trope anymore, but a redirect to a YMMV entry.

** Honestly, every single main character can be a JerkAss so a greater or lesser extent, and they all have these to explain their behaviour. Other notable examples: Pierce is a WellDoneSonGuy to a horribly cruel and bigoted father, Abed's AmbiguousDisorder caused him to be bullied by his peers and misunderstood by her parents, Shirley's rage issues stem from bullying as a teenager and alcoholism caused by marital strife with her now ex-husband...
