''The Conjuring'' is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by Creator/JamesWan and written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. It is the first film in ''Film/TheConjuringUniverse''.

Starring Creator/PatrickWilson and Creator/VeraFarmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, with Ron Livingston and Creator/LiliTaylor in the supporting cast, the film presents the case of the Perron family, who lived in rural Harrisville, Rhode Island in the year 1971 as they become haunted just after their arrival in their new home.

Followed by a 2016 sequel, ''Film/TheConjuringII'', and a 2021 sequel, ''Film/TheConjuringTheDevilMadeMeDoIt'', as well as several spinoff franchises, ''Film/{{Annabelle}}'' and ''Film/TheNun''.

* AdultFear: All over the place. The movie really wants you to finish your popcorn, exit the theatre, and give your family a big hug.
** The ghost, Bathsheba, overwhelmingly targets the Perron children, down to [[spoiler:possessing Carolyn and trying to use her hands to kill April and Christine during the climax]]. It repeats her actions in life, when she ''killed her seven-day-old son'' in a HumanSacrifice. The amount of times the girls are screaming, inches away from their parents, but incredibly difficult to get to, will chill anybody's bones.
** Additionally, the ghost latches onto the Warrens because they're trying to help. [[spoiler:She goes after their daughter, who's alone in the house save for her sleeping grandma, and does her level best to kill her.]]

* ChristianityIsCatholic: The Warrens are authorized by the Vatican to perform an exorcist against a [[SalemIsWitchCountry witch of Salem]], even though the Catholic church wasn’t behind the Salem Witch trials.

* BlindfoldedTrip: The children play "hide and clap" soon after arriving at the house, for which the seeker is blindfolded while everyone else hides, and the seeker can ask the others to clap. When Christine is blindfolded, they accidentally discover the basement. Later, Carolyn is blindfolded while April hides; when Carolyn asks for a clap, a pair of ghostly hands clap from the wardrobe. Carolyn goes to hunt for April there, still blindfolded; when she takes her blindfold off, the audience receives a small JumpScare from April laughing in excitement from the other end of the room.

* NoodleIncident: Ed is reluctant to continue with any paranormal investigations due to an incident where Lorraine had a vision of ''"something"'' during an exorcism. We never find out what that something was, but it was enough to send Lorraine into a serious HeroicBSOD for several days. This becomes a plot point in the second film, where we find out that it was [[spoiler:a vision of Ed's death]].

* AnkleDrag: This happens to Christine Perron and Judy Warren in two separate occassions.

* HappilyMarried: Ed and Lorraine are absolutely devoted to each other, with their relationship forming the emotional core of the film. Even when they argue, it's out of nothing more than desperately wanting to keep each other safe.

* TheSociopath: Bathsheba Sherman, a Satanist witch who tried to sacrifice her baby to Satan, killing herself when she was caught. Her spirit haunts anybody who moves into her old house, tormenting the occupants until she can possess the mother to murder the children.
