The film was intended to cap off a trilogy, which it basically did until the next film came out nearly 20 years later.

* CastingGag: SeanConnery was cast because Lucas and Spielberg felt the only guy who could play Indy's dad was JamesBond, and because in a meta sense, JamesBond ''was'' the father of Indiana Jones. ''Raiders'' came about when Stephen Spielberg told George Lucas that he wanted to make a Bond movie; Lucas pitched his "Indiana Smith" character as a rights-free alternative, and the rest is history.

* SelfDestructingSecurity: The Holy Grail in ''The Last Crusade'' is protected by many layers of secrets, guards and traps. The final resort, however, is that the Grail can never pass beyond "The Great Seal". Doing so results in the entire place self destructing and the Grail being lost forever.
* ShutUpHannibal: Henry Sr. gives a brilliant one to Colonel Vogel during ''Last Crusade'':

* SwarmOfRats: As seen in the catacombs in The Last Crusade.
* TakeMyHand: At the end of ''Last Crusade'', Elsa tries to take the Holy Grail from the temple, which creates plenty of earthquake chaos. She ends up hanging onto Indy over a deep abyss, but instead of letting him save her, she tries to reach for the Grail just beneath her. The leather glove on her hand ultimately slips off before she can grasp it, and she plummets to her death. Indy essentially decides to do the same thing until his father begs "Indiana, let it go."
