It's pretty consistent with markers that it's set in the 80s or early 90s. Nothing really ambiguous. We just don't get an exact year.

* AmbiguousTimePeriod: Possibly set in TheNineties, with no computers or cell phones in sight, and more liberal use of language that would be offensive today, but the deliberately stylized cinematography makes it hard to tell.

"Dinner in America" is a 2020 American coming of age dark comedy film written, directed, and edited by Adam Carter Rehmeier, starring Creator/KyleGallner as punk rocker and sometimes petty drug dealer Simon, and Emily Skeggs as young, awkward, outcast Patty. On the run from the police, Simon runs into Patty, who lets him into her uptight, boring, middle-class home, and also reveals her secrets appreciation for the punk band PSYOPS, and its perpetually masked singer, John Q.

The only problem being, of course, that Simon secretly is John Q. Hijinks ensue, of course, as Simon slowly falls for Patty, and Patty learns to stand up for herself, and take no shit.

"Dinner in America" premiered at the Sundance Film festival in January of 2020, but due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, theatrical release was delayed until May of 2022, with a video-on-demand release in June of that year.
