When the [[Manga/AxisPowersHetalia canon]]'s got a [[LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters huge]] (and [[CastFullOfPrettyBoys mostly male]]) cast of [[AnthropomorphicPersonification anthropomorphized]] countries, the fans inevitably will write lots of fanfics reimagining real-life historical events and international relations with these characters.

Okay, sometimes that's just an excuse to [[SlashFic slash]] the cute nation-guys together, but there really are plenty of Hetalia fics full of thought, emotion, research, and/or even good romance. This page is proof of that.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for ''Webcomic/AxisPowersHetalia'' fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found [[Main/FanficRecommendations here]].

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Administrivia/ConversationInTheMainPage though; that goes in the discussion page.

And let's face it, ''Webcomic/AxisPowersHetalia'' itself is a fanfic for RealLife.

[[folder: Dark Fic ]]
''Let's face it, with a premise like [[AnthropomorphicPersonification that]], there's bound to be some dark fics running around. To avoid cluttering the folder that does say "friendly relationships", they're all being put here.''

''[[http://community.livejournal.com/all_he_ever/profile All He Ever Wanted]]'' by lindensphinx, mithrigil, and puella_nerdii (with pinstripesuit as Minister of Propaganda) all of Livejournal (warning for BL and DarkFic)
* Recommended by {{Marionetta}} (yet again, sorry)
* ''Synopsis'': An AlternateHistory fic in which England never broke off his alliance with Japan, and America became communist.
* ''Comments'': Just reading the alternate timeline in the first post can be frightening and chilling. It starts in 1923, the year in which the Anglo-Japanese Alliance would have been terminated, and ends in 1960, when America, allied with Russia against the rest of the world, finishes making the first atomic bomb. It's still in progress, and not being written in chronological order(the beginning and ending have been put in the same post). It looks like there will be some serious TearJerker. It also works as a reminder how all of this could have really happened.
** This Troper found ''[[http://community.livejournal.com/all_he_ever/1729.html The Seventh Door]],'' by mithrigil ([[CompleteMonster Prussia]], [[BrokenBird Hungary]], [[JamesBondage Austria]]--[[ScarpiaUltimatum warning]] [[IHaveYourWife for]] [[RapeAsDrama rape]]), especially distressing. The line "''Ungarn, Ungarn,'' do you hate me?" has freaked me out since I first read it. AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY.
** {{Solandra}}: This fic is really a LoveItOrHateIt one: either you think that it's a brilliantly clever, imaginative, and edgy ForWantOfANail fic, or you think that it goes ''way'' too far in its DarkerAndEdgier {{Alternative Character Interpretation}}s and eschews potentially complex characterization for pure shock value [[WriterOnBoard to make historical points]]. So YourMileageMayVary, of course. I personally love the prose and alternative historical timeline, but the reinterpretations of England, Japan, and Prussia reminding me too much of a [[RonTheDeathEater certain trope]] kept me from becoming fully immersed in it.
** (anon, sorry): Echoing Solandra's opinion, particularly about the issues with characterization. DarkerAndEdgier AlternativeCharacterInterpretation is in full effect, to the point where many characters are not even remotely similar to their canon counterparts (and in some characters' case, especially Prussia's, it does smell like [[that certain trope RonTheDeathEater]] and WriterOnBoard). YMMV on whether the story is better for it or not, but if you go into this fic be prepared that it's more like an original story with original characters inspired by the premise of ''Hetalia'' than a ''Hetalia'' fanfic.

''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5073300/1/Seven_Little_Killers/ Seven Little Killers]]'' by Lucky-Angel135, a joint account between luckystars135 and Fallen Angel Wings (Slash, ''Explicit'' Violence, Character Death; in other words a pretty DarkFic)
* Recommended by CheshireGrinne
* ''Synopsis'': Nations are being murdered, and a group of mysterious masked killers is behind it. Their goal seems to be to plunge the world into chaos, but is it really? Who are these masked killers, and why are they really killing off nations?
* ''Comments'': A common premise usually carried out in an awful manner, the authors manage to change all that and provide a truly heart-wrenching and mind-grabbing work. This fic is full of psychological depth not often found in fanfiction. Sure to keep you guessing who the masked killers really are. And, if you’re anything like [[CheshireGrinne this Troper]], you will be so sucked into the plot that new chapters will fill you with dread at the thought of what could possibly happen, and who could possibly get hurt, next. And yet you won’t be able to stop reading.
* It’s unfortunate that recently, the writers announced the story’s being dropped. They’ve revealed one killer [[spoiler:Blue is actually both America and Canada]], but otherwise not much else has been revealed. This Troper read that and almost cried, ''especially'' since it ended on a freaking cliff-hanger involving [[spoiler:Russia waking up from his ''six month long'' coma and trying to talk with China, who's still stuck in a hallucination while being mentally tortured by [[BackFromTheDead Nussia]] and Yellow]].
** As that was revealed on April Fools Day, along with the dropping of another story that was proven to be a joke, it remains to be seen what's going on with this...
** It's being continued. Turns out it WAS just an April Fool's joke that went on a bit.
** This Troper was kind of let down by the fic. She expected it to be full-out gore, descriptions to keep you up at night, et cetera. (Masochism? What is this masochism you speak of?) And everyone holds it in such high standards, so she thought maybe the plot would be so incredibly captivating that once you start you can't stop reading it. The reality: the only death that made her cry was [[spoiler:Finland]]'s, and that was more because of [[spoiler:his message to Sweden]] than anything else. Quite honestly, she bored of the fic right before Yellow's arc, and hasn't caught up since. To each her own, but personally this Troper was in no way blown away by the fic.
*** [[ThatStalkerChick This troper]] believes this fanfiction deserves its own page, so, low and behold, [[SevenLittleKillers she made one]].
** This Troper has very mixed feelings about this fic. While the plot is complex and obviously very well-planned, the writing quality is definitely not great. On the one hand, when she first discovered it she read it through the entire night and bawled her eyes out many times. On the other hand, she still ended up getting tired of all the twists and turns and plot bunnies and ended up skipping quite a few chapters. A more recent attempt by her to read this fic ended up with frustration at all the unsubtle tear-jerking and subpar writing quality.

''[[http://zed-azrael.livejournal.com/12718.html Memory (Zikaron)]]'' (Holocaust imagery, OC, controversial topic)
* Recommended by Anon
* ''Sypnosis'': Small fics focused on the original character Israel.
* ''Comments'': Don't be put off by the fact that it focuses on an OriginalCharacter -- the cast it as present, though not in the very center. Definetley a TearJerker if there ever was one. The fic is just exploding with emotions and may be very painful to read because of the focus on both the Holocaust. Israel's pain might come haunt you. But still amazing writing and a very good read.
** Second'd heavily. This story is a beautiful read that is both historically fascinating, and a complete jumble of emotions that leave you breathless. Don't be put off at all by the OriginalCharacter in the story, and any other that crops up; this is a moving, poignant, and well-researched piece of work that will have you reading it several times over just to really commit it to memory.

* ''Synopsis'': Crossover with George Orwell's ''{{1984}}''.
* ''Comments'': In a similarly dark vein to ''Memory (Zikaron)'' above comes this crossover fic in which England has been captured by ''1984'''s Oceania, who is slowly torturing him to death by erasing his past, his language, and his culture. Beneath the horror is inspiring defiance and a valuable lesson that who we are gives us our power. India in particular is amazing.
** ShayGuy: Oceania as an AffablyEvil CheerfulChild just ''works''.
** {{Solandra}}: The author's revealed herself to be Ladylisse, and the cleaned-up fic is now available on the ''Hetalia'' community [[http://community.livejournal.com/hetalia/2642280.html here]]. And I third the recommendation; this fic has all the creepiness of ''1984'', but with an unexpected sense of hope underneath it all (i.e. no ShootTheShaggyDog here).
** {{Tropers/RainKrystal}}: [[TearJerker Oh... Oh God...]] I third this...

''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5146573/1/Half_a_Millennium Half a Millenium]]'' by dreams.of.destiny (Warnings for [[SlashFic slash]], sex as explicit as ff.net will allow, [[RapeAsDrama rape]], drug use, and violence)
* Recommended by AkatsukiDaybreak
* ''Pairing(s)'': Japan/China (it's mostly onesided), onesided Korea/China, England/China (not that China's very happy about it), onesided Russia/China, and a few hints of others
* ''Synopsis'': Focuses mainly on the relationship between China and Japan from their first meeting up until as far as today (the author doesn’t have a set plan yet, but expects it to get that far) as well as their relationships with the other Asian nations and the West.
* ''Comments'': Provides great characterization and interesting insights into the thoughts and motivations of the characters. There are many heartwarming moments (at least initially…), but it becomes sad and very dark as it progresses. Updates frequently and nearly complete. Moved from shipping fics because of events of some of the more recent chapters.

* ''Pairings'': Spain/Romano, Spain/Prussia, Spain/France, and alluded to Prussia/Russia
* ''Synopsis'': Spain considers all the ways in which he is a liar, and in the process reveals some uncomfortable truths. A dark, expertly-written story with bite.

* ''Characters:'': Mainly Canada and America but includes other nation-tans (Russia, England, France) and humans (that you need to read to see who they are).
* ''Synopsis'': As the Soviet Red Army liberates Auschwitz-Birkenau (as World War Two draws to a close), Ivan discovers the brutality of the camps. As he looks through one of the buildings, he finds two familiar faces among the bodies.
* ''Comments'': A well- written fic (posted directly fro the Kink meme), this fic is worth a good read. It gives you descriptions that give you a sense of horror but not enough to overwhelm you. A good read indeed.
*** "But not enough to overwhelm you"? Note: Do not read if any bit at all sensitive. It has gory descriptions of the Mengele experiments on twins, the author did their research. And put everything they discovered in. This WILL keep you up at night. And you will never be able to look at Alfred or Matthew without thinking of it. It scared me so much, that I just skipped over the worse spots, but past Chapter 3, it becomes a never-ending barrage of {{High Octane Nightmare Fuel}}.
*** Okay, I wouldn't say this will keep you up at night. It's really not that bad. Yes, if you're highly and can't stand the thought of some gore, maybe you shouldn't read it. But I wouldn't say not to if you're just a little sensitive. I think most people can still appreciate the quality of the work even if it's a little strong.
*** This Troper thought the story was amazing, and definitely horrifying, but didn't find it scarring. She slept very easily after reading it, and she herself is a triplet, so if anyone should be freaking out it'd be her. The descriptions were definitely... well, descriptive, but I guess it's one of those things that while you're reading it you feel a chill and freaked out, but afterwords you're more like "Whoa, what a wonderful story!" than you are "Man, I gotta sleep with the lights on tonight..." (Then again, this Troper was disappointed by "Seven Little Killers", finding it not scary or descriptive enough, so don't hold her opinion too highly...)
*** This troper has to agree as well, it was a depressing story, but it wasn't enough to keep me up at night. Then again, I've spent time on 4chan, so my shock value for {{High Octane Nightmare Fuel}} is rather high. It was sad, really it was and some parts ''did'' give me chills, but not enough to keep me up at night.

* ''Characters'': America, England, France, Hungary, Prussia, Austria, Italy; some US/UK.
* ''Synopsis'': As the world plunged into chaos, the Nations vowed to find each other again in another life; among them was America and England. Centuries later in a bleak dieselpunk society, Alfred and Arthur find each other again in different circumstances. Unfortunately, the mysterious force that killed them the first time around may not be through with them yet...
* ''Comments'': The story, sadly unfinished, is basically a reincarnation fic, albeit a rather bleak and tearjerking one. The writer did a good job painting both the world, itself described as a dystopic {{Dieselpunk}} state at war, and keeping the Nations in character, even though most of them have yet to regain memories of their past selves [[spoiler: save for Francis/France]]. There is also a tinge of greater mystery in how the mess started off in the first place. And how this might relate to the current [[spoiler: immortal]] leaders of their world.
** The author also has the reincarnated!Nations subjected to a series of tear-inducing scenes, just to show how their ordeal is far from over. Whether it's Hungary bumping into (and passing by) Austria, ''completely unaware'' of their past lives or [[spoiler:Matthew/Canada, who ''still'' turned out to be Alfred's twin, dying in a house fire ''off-screen,'']] they just don't have a break.

* ''Characters'': Russia/Lithuania pairing; Every country part of the Soviet Union: Latvia; Estonia; Ukraine; Belarus; OCs: Georgia; Chechnya; The "Stans": Uzbek, Turkmen, Tajik, Kirghiz, Kazakh; Azerbaijan; Armenia; Afghanistan; Moldova
* ''Synopsis'': A history of Imperial and Soviet Russia told from Lithuania's perspective. Follows history loosely, and doesn't shy away from Russia's poor treatment of his satellite states.
* ''Comments'': An enjoyable read for those who don't mind delving into Russia's cruelty. What passes as a joke in the series is very creepy, abusive and sometimes scary when seen from Lithuania's perspective. Yet, Russia is still really, really hard to hate. He comes off very charming and somewhat tragic, even at his worst. The characters seem to have this same problem with hating Russia, particularly Lithuania and Georgia. Also explores Russia's insanity, using Bloody Sunday as the trigger (just as in the comic). Sometimes the story IS a little over the top, and I wonder if the writer didn't have ideas they didn't use, because some things dangle. But the story really is worth it for the Bloody Sunday scene, both Revolutions, and the really strong portrayals of the characters. Lithuania's growth is interesting to watch as well.

* ''Characters'': Japan/China with background humans, including the Empress Wanrong and Emperor Hirohito, and the Axis Powers.
* ''Synopsis'': In a world where the Axis Powers won World War Two, a tale of political intrigue and desire unfolds at Akasaka Palace. China is a beautiful caged bird, a war prize to Japan, his people under the black umbrella of Imperial rule.
* ''Comments'': The writing in ACastleOfSilenceAndBones is gorgeous. ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. The author manages to set a very sensual, heavy atmosphere with a few sentences at a time . And it's not mere purple prose; there is a plot unfolding in the background involving the son of Empress Wanrong; multiple re-readings might occur. The sex scenes aren't too shabby either. Be warned, this story features copious amounts of China in drag. Having copious amounts of sex. And Japan is a little OOC by Hetalia standards because of the way his possessiveness is treated. And notice, the chapter titles form a poem. The author has obviously done her research in the mannerisms of Showa Japan, however sparse the word that place the story in its setting. In the right mood the ending could break a few hearts.

* ''Characters'': So far Germany, England, and (North?) Korea are the most obvious, but Prussia, Denmark, and France also have a fair amount of screen time, Eventually, pretty much everyone.
* ''Synopsis'': Twenty minutes into the future, the threat of Global Warming and the discovery of embodied nations has lead to National Engineering, an attempt to reduce the impact of climate change on various countries by experimenting on the nations that embody them. If that means locking them up like lab rats, so be it. Some nations have evaded capture through various means. Some have even forgotten who they are.
* ''Comments'': This fic is ''beautiful''. The author manages to convey the dystopian atmosphere very well through her writing, and her portrayal of the nations in captivity is wonderfully disturbing, especially given that we never see the perspective of somebody locked up; it's all relayed through an amnesiac Germany who thinks he's an Engineer. Still unfinished, but nonetheless a gripping read.

* ''Pairings'': Russia/Prussia, Germany/Italy
* ''Warnings'': MPreg, sex, violence
* ''Synopsis'': "It's funny, how one might define what punishment is." 1961-1989. Prussia is stuck in Russia's house after the erection of the Berlin Wall, chafing at his captivity and separation from his brother. Russia has a hidden agenda for keeping him there: He wants a child of his own. Prussia isn't sure he wants to refuse.
* ''Comments'': First of all, don't be put off by either the summary or the [=MPreg=] aspects of this story. [[@/{{Amethystasheryn}} I,]] the first recommender, don't generally like [=MPreg=] and steer away from lemons, but [=FroggyFran=] weaves those elements into such a compelling story that they don't matter in the long run. The characters are spot-on; Prussia's character is slightly toned down from its canon portrayal, but it gels perfectly with the dark atmosphere of the story and never comes off as OOC. Even better, Russia is given the depth fanfic often denys him: He's not a monster, but an overgrown almost-child hurt by his past, who loves Prussia and his children and wants them all to love him in return. Germany, Italy and even the Baltics are given their own depth as well even though they have less "screentime". Focus is also placed on Russia's close relationships with the Romanovs, Germany and Prussia's brotherly bond, and the weird dynamic between Lithuania and Russia, and all those relationships create scenes that made [[TheStoic the person who didn't cry over]] [[{{Futurama}} Fry's dog]] [[TearJerker get teary and choked up.]] I really can't recommend this story enough, even for people who aren't fans of Russia/Prussia, ratings above [=PG-13=], or [=MPreg=].
* Note: I didn't put this in the "shipping fics" section because while the relationship between Prussia and Russia is the focus, there is a lot more going on than that, with all the characters.

* Comments: This story was quite frightening, when it makes you realize that the nice guy you met on the street could very well be a bzou, out to eat you and your family. It was well-written and descriptive, and I enjoyed the dialogue.

YMMV on whether the story is better for it or not, but if you go into this fic be prepared that it's more like an original story with original characters inspired by the premise of ''Hetalia'' than a ''Hetalia'' fanfic.

* ''Synopsis'': Crossover with George Orwell's ''{{1984}}''.

* ''Pairings'': Russia/Prussia, Germany/Italy
* ''Warnings'': MPreg, sex, violence
