* UsedToBeASweetKid:
** Alys of Pyresia used to be an adorable bright-eyed and happy if bossy little girl. When told she would have a brother, her reaction was "How exciting! He will spar with me!" Unfortunately, the death of her mother in childbirth and her resultant upbringing turned her into a GenerationXerox of the worst traits in her father, a vicious, cruel, sadistic, AllTakeAndNoGive conqueror, at least partially fueled by her clinging to the only parental figure she had left and desperately wanting to please him.
** To a much lesser degree, Aenar also took a nosedive as he grew up and his family's bullying/indoctrination got to him. He was a shy, sensitive young boy who wouldn't hurt a fly, yet grew into the FrontlineGeneral commander of the Pyresian army due to his swordsmanship, but mostly for his tactical mind. Next to Alys he comes off as a saint, as he's still capable of genuine devoted love to Lyan that would eventually lead him to denounce his family and country, however belated. However, his upbringing had also given him a LackOfEmpathy that prevented him from seeing the natural results of his betrayal of Lyan and the Khionians out of blind obedience to his country. Ironically, Alys correctly saw that Lyan would want nothing to do with Aenar, but Aenar took much longer to realize that.

* VillainousFaceHold: Alys' first actions upon meeting a captive Lyan: lifting his chin up with her sword and mockingly asking if he was indeed the man who bewitched her brother and whether he was a little short for a crown prince. Critical Research Failure is a disambiguation page

* CriticalResearchFailure: InUniverse, verging on CultureClash. In chapter 1, Yuuri refers to Victor using his patronymic while trying to get his attention. This is not done in Russian culture, since people typically use "first name + patronymic" for older (40+) people, teachers of one's children, someone vastly above the speaker in social status, etc. He can be forgiven for thinking it's appropriate and analogous to some Japanese suffixes. It is "Vitya!" that Victor actually responds to - the correct form of address for him, as Yuuri's fiancé and peer.

Adult Fear is now a disambig

* AdultFear:
** The very premise: you spend your life - often from a very young age - battling threats that can level your city, if not the entire world. It’s well-paid, given the risk of injury, but once you lose your mobility and your reflexes have been dulled even slightly by age, you’re out of the running. If you have loved ones who aren’t part of the life, you cannot tell them about it. Your only source of emotional catharsis is other Agency-involved people. Should you be unfortunate enough to attach yourself to a Neutral and get yourself killed on the job, you will be written out of their existence. It will be as if you have never existed at all. If you are an Agent whose lover/partner/spouse/friend/sibling have died in the field, you will be stuck with your memories and grief for that person. It’s exactly why the Agency employs empaths and telepaths as therapists, fortunately, but it’s no substitution for talking to someone who knew the deceased well.
** Upon learning of a great secret, the Handlers decided to keep the full extent of the story from the persons involved in order to protect them. This ended up getting [[spoiler: Yuuri killed, delivering the Red Rose handily to the bad guys, and Victor mind-controlled, which means the Blue Rose would follow and cause TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt.]]
** On the same theme of secret-keeping: Katerina, after [[spoiler: losing her husband to occupational hazard]], tried to keep her little boy as far away from the magical world as possible. She was turned in by Galina, someone she had thought she could trust. Galina was right to do so as Victor would end up playing an instrumental part in the world's survival, but Katya never knew that.

** Myrina Aretia was named after Myrina, queen of the Amazons. Aretias is an ancient name for Giresun Island. It is said to have been used by the Amazons for their fertility rituals. Furthermore, a legend holds that King Mithridates VI of Pontus, furious at his daughter falling in love with a poor shepherd, had the shepherd hung from a cherry tree in front of the tower where the princess was imprisoned on the island. She hung herself from the tower the next day. Myrina [[spoiler: killed herself by blowing up the armory, and her last thought was of her beloved prince, who would be dead in a MurderSuicide with his husband mere minutes afterwards.]]
