** Hero systems in different nations are explored, for example, Chinese heroes are an arm of the Chinese Communist Party.
** The series explores how Quirks are used in warfare with the war in Africa.
* ADayInTheLimelight: ''Blackbird'' is this for Hitoshi Shinsou and Mina Ashido, who were supporting characters in canon.
* AnArmAndALeg: Toga loses several of her fingers.
* BabiesEverAfter: As one of the one-shots confirms, Himiko and Izuku have a girl named [[DeadGuyJunior Nana.]]

* ContrastingSequelProtagonist: Hitoshi and Mina as compared to Izuku and Himiko; the latter have a whirlwind romance while the former have a heavy WillTheyOrWontThey.

* DarkerAndEdgier: While the canon is by no means soft, ''Expendable Assets'' goes into topics such as international relations, espionage, war, [[FantasticRacism discrimination,]] and even ''genocide''.
* DeadGuyJunior: Izuku discusses naming his and Himiko's child Nana with All Might's permission.

** On the Hidden Valley, the way they talk about Quirked people (comparing them to demons) and [[FinalSolution treat them]] is much like how [=LGBTQ+=] people are treated in much of Africa and the Middle East.
** It's repeatedly mentioned that the war in Africa would be going much smoother if China and Russia would work with the United States and her allies instead of coordinating resistance to the Hidden Valley seperately and occasionally taking potshots at each other. !! The Expendable Assets series contains examples of:
* AdaptationalHeroism: Himiko is an AntiVillain in canon, but is unrepentant about killing or joining the side of villainy. Here, she shows remorse for killing and most of her crimes were committed under the influence of MindControl.
** Shigaraki as well, and for similar reasons. His WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds side is played up here, and his rage against society and the world was influenced by [[IdentityAmnesia fake memories]] given to him by All for One and Pestillencia.
** The League of Villains in general have their TrueCompanions and EqualOpportunityEvil aspects played up.
* AdaptationalVillainy: Ochako. Though she does grow out of it over time.
* BadassNormal: All of Ndege Mweusi's soldiers, who are [[UnSorcerer Quirkless]] but can face people with offensive quirks using training and technology.
* BigBad:
** For the first part, Pestillencia, a villain with a criminal empire maintained by MindControl.
** For ''Blackbird'', Ndege Mweusi, the dictator of the Hidden Valley, a rouge nation in Africa.
** For ''Zero'', All for One, as in canon.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Himiko, Ochako, and Mei, all for Izuku. [[PsychoticLoveTriangle This causes... ]] [[{{Understatement}} some issues.]]
* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: All for One relied upon his physical power and stolen quirks to rule and terrorize Japan, whereas Pestillencia [[NonActionGuy doesn't have any physical power to speak of,]] and relies entirely on his [[DreamWeaver Quirk]] to get people to do what he wants.
** Ndege Mweusi is [[UnSorcerer Quirkless,]] as are [[BadassNormal all of his men.]]
* DatingCatwoman: Obviously. [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]] somewhat in ''a yandere in the secret service'', but played straight in ''Zero.''
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: An African dictator orders the [[FinalSolution execution of an entire population]] just because of who they are. [[{{UsefulNotes/Rwanda}} Hmmm...]]
* DreamWeaver: What Pestillencia's quirk is at a fundamental level.
* FantasticRacism: In addition to the canon examples [[SuperSupremacist (Quirked people discriminating against Quirkless people)]], there's also the nation of the Hidden Valley, which is a state of mostly [[UnSorcerer Quirkless]] people who want to commit genocide against the quirked.
* InsecureLoveInterest: [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed.]] Ochako and Mei's insecurities prevent them from telling Izuku how they feel before it's too late to say anything.
** Hitoshi is a much straighter, and much less tragic example. He finds expressing his romantic feelings for Mina difficult due to his [[DarkAndTroubledPast past romantic experiences]].
* PsychoticLoveTriangle: More like Psychotic LoveDodecahedron. Himiko, Ochako, and Mei are all after Izuku's heart, but the latter two [[CannotSpitItOut cannot spit it out.]]
* {{Yandere}}: Despite being in the title, [[PlayingWithATrope there aren't really any straight examples.]]
** Himiko at first seems like a straight example: she [[MurderTheHypotenuse thinks that murder is a good solution to other girls being interested in Izuku]], [[ClingyJealousGirl is constantly worried about Izuku dating someone else]], [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and]] [[GirlWithPsychoWeapon loves knives.]] However, when she actually gets in a relationship with Izuku, she doesn't show any of the [[AllTakeAndNoGive possessive characteristics]] of the archetypical yandere.
** ''[[NiceGirl Ochako]]'', of all people, fits the trope much better. She goes into a murderous rage the moment she gets the inkling that Himiko and Izuku are involved, and tries to kill Himiko even after Izuku assured her that she was cleared to be there. Himiko even [[LampshadeHanging lampshades this.]] Thankfully, [[CharacterDevelopment she gets better.]]
** [[MadScientist Mei Hatsume]] [[WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove doesn't quite have a handle on how to deal with romantic feelings]] but she'll still [[OneManArmy carve her way through many men much stronger than her with her gadgets]] when Izuku is threatened. However, she backs off when it's clear Izuku is happy with Himiko.
