* BlamingTheVictim: Many see [[spoiler:Hawks' capture and loss of his wings at the hands of [[SerialKiller Kaetsu]]]] are not his fault but caustic media sources and some civilians blame the victim for what happened. These groups think he quote-unquote "asked for it" or "didn't try hard enough to fight back against his attacker" because he is 1) a Pro Hero 2) a man and 3) [[FantasticRacism has a mutant-type Quirk]]. They snidely comment that if he wasn't "strong enough" to stop the attack then he shouldn't be a Hero at all. A disgusted Aizawa calls it a classic case of victim blaming.

** Katniss notes that Hawks is fairly androgynous as a teenager, and it never fully goes away. This comes in handy for when the Eight use his body as the vigilante persona Ennea, as observers cannot tell whether Ennea is male or female.

* DemotedToExtra: Shigaraki is the main villain of the canon manga. Here he appears once at the mall where he is [[ForWantOfANail successfully arrested by Hawks, Aizawa, and Miruko]]. ** Hawks' year-long disappearance has rippling effects on the timeline. Miruko works with Best Jeanist and a team of heroes to try to locate Hawks, making her less of a loner and causing her to become the Number Five Ranked Hero nearly a year early. This bumps Edgeshot down a spot.
** Hawks saves Tensei from Stain, preventing his paralysis, and captures the Hero Killer before the Hosu incident. Stain is rescued by the League of Villains but Hawks arrests him again at Hosu.
** Hawks' rescue of Ingenium causes Todoroki to wonder what type of Hero Hawks is and, after talking with Midoriya about it, he chooses to intern with Hawks instead of his father.
** Shoto's internship choice causes Endeavor to [[NeckLift violently confront Hawks]], which causes the latter to question his idol's morals. As a result, Hawks start looking into Endeavor because the Voices refuse to tell him the truth.
** The Voices act as a Vigilante and rescue Eri months before the students' second internship. This prevents Overhaul from perfecting the Quirk-erasing drug.
** Because of Eri's rescue, Overhaul attempts to take her back. He gets curbstomped by Hawks and arrested months early during the attempt. As a result, he does not have the chance to kill Magne and his arms are not taken by Shigaraki and Mr. Compress. Since he still has his Quirk, he is taken by Doctor Ujiko, who works for the Commission to brainwash Villains with powerful Quirks into becoming their agents.
** Hawks, Miruko, and Aizawa manage to arrest Shigaraki when he confronts Midoriya at the mall, depriving the League of their original leader. [[spoiler:All For One is healed and takes over.]]
** Hawks meets Twice before he can join the League and befriends him, resulting in [[IJustWantToHaveFriends Twice]] having UndyingLoyalty to Hawks and [[spoiler:Twice [[HeelFaceTurn redeeming himself]] by becoming a better person who puts his villainous desires aside and wants to stop All For One.]]
** Due to [[spoiler:Shigaraki's arrest and the possibility that he will tell the Heroes where they are, All For One and the Doctor move the League's base and Nomu factory out of Kamino]].
** Muscular is killed [[spoiler:by Kaetsu]] so Kota hates Heroes even more, specifically Hawks since the Winged Hero survived his encounter with Muscular while Kota's parents didn't.
** Since Muscular is dead, he is not at the training camp. Instead, [[spoiler:a brainwashed Overhaul is and he grievously wounds Aizawa. As a result, Midoriya has no opportunity to show Kota the value of Heroes and his confidence takes a huge hit since he could not protect his teacher or Kota.]]
** Hawks' presence changes a lot for the training camp. His previous interactions with Twice make both hesitant to fight each other and so Twice [[spoiler:refuses to use his clones to assist the League and completely stays out of the fight after Hawks offers to help him leave AFO. Hawks also successfully fights off and arrests Compress, while Iida and Todoroki use the teamwork they gained through their internship with Hawks to fight off Dabi, Toga, and Nomu, with Toga failing to get blood from any of them. This prevents anyone from being kidnapped, including Bakugo and Ragdoll. Thus, Ragdoll keeps her Quirk.]]

** The time travelers don't remember every little detail of their lives since ten years have passed since the present. They also lack the outsider awareness of everything that happens in the plot like the audience do so the UA traitor, which is known to the UA teachers but not the students, was a mere blip in their timeline. The traitor was never an issue again after UA fell and was never found in the next decade so the time travelers nearly forgot one even existed. Silver only remembers after Hawks wondered if a traitor told Overhaul Eri's location.

** [[ForWantOfANail The butterfly effect]] commonly screws the time travelers over since the changes they make ripple outward and make more people act differently. They cannot predict everything that everyone will do and they do not have the insight into their motivations. For example, rescuing Eri early causes Overhaul to attack her escort and Hawks unknowingly encourages Twice to have a HeelFaceTurn.

** The time travelers' themselves are traumatized by what they lived through. They fought a war, went through hell, and lost everyone and everything they loved. Their future was so bad that they had to go to the past to try to save it, and it left them with physical and mental scars. They are often shocked by how different and unburdened their past selves are and are unprepared when they act in ways their older selves wouldn't.

* DisappointedInYou: Hawks says this almost word for word to Todoroki and Iida after they disregard protocol, go to hunt Stain alone, and nearly get killed doing so rather than call him for help the moment they were in danger or simply avoiding the whole encounter by not leaving his side in the first place like he ordered. Hawks sounds so exhausted as he says it that even Midoriya, who is not a target of Hawks' lecture, is ashamed. Rather than the lecture, it's Hawks' disappointment that makes the interns accept how badly they screwed up by not calling Pro Heroes for help.

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: A young man is viciously attacked by a stalker, who pins him down and tears at his clothes while cutting him with a knife. The young man falls unconscious during the assault. When he wakes, he discovers his attacker [[spoiler:cut off his wings]]. He is in so much pain he can hardly move and curls up on the bed he was assaulted in, sobbing. For many readers it brings memories of that scene where [[spoiler:Film/{{Maleficent}} wakes to find her wings gone]] to mind.
* DrJerk: One of the doctors that cares for Hawks after he is [[spoiler:rescued from Kaetsu]] is a condescending Jerkass who considers Hawks' word unreliable due to his quote unquote "trauma" and "fragile state of mind". He also participates in {{Gaslighting}} as he tries to convince Hawks that his victory over [[spoiler:his abuser (Kaetsu)]] never happened. Orange cusses the doctor out for his victim blaming and lack of empathy.

* FirstEpisodeTwist: The summary and first chapter of ''For Their Sakes'' sets up the standard PeggySue plot where eight Pro Heroes go back in time to save the world from the League of Villains. At the end of the first chapter, their method back is destroyed mid-transfer. As a result, the time travelers do not end up in their past selves' bodies. They end up in Hawks' body instead. The plot follows the trapped characters and Hawks as they learn to live with their new situation while trying to save the world and discover the Hero Society they idealistically came back to save is flawed and corrupt.

* ForcefulKiss: [[FanDisservice Played for Horror.]] In a flashback, [[spoiler:Kaetsu forcefully kisses sixteen year-old Hawks, who is [[PlayingWithPuppets completely under the control]] of his handler's Quirk.]] The narrative focuses on the victim's terrified reaction as he tries to force any part of his body to move so he can fight back. He doesn't succeed and begins dissociating as his "escape".

* HonestyIsTheBestPolicy: Hawks believes this and tries to convince the Voices to tell him about things-to-come so he can pass on the warning to the other heroes. They decline out of fear of what will happen to him if the wrong people (aka All For One or the Commission) find out he knows things he should not. * OlderAndWiser: The [[MentalTimeTravel eight Voices]] are in their mid to late twenties when they are mentally sent back in time. Their mental and emotional maturity is even older than that since they were forced to grow up fast or die in the post-apocalyptic Japan caused by the Villains' attacks. Unlike their teen-aged selves, they are much more aware of the flaws of Hero Society and that Heroes (especially All Might) are not immortal. They hope to impart this knowledge onto their younger selves and their friends through Hawks, such as when they encourage Hawks to bluntly explain to Iida and Todoroki exactly how hunting down Stain nearly got them killed.

** The Voices argue on whether it's right to let Kota grieve the way he is i.e by telling Hawks it's a good thing he lost his wings and blaming him for surviving an attack from Muscular while Kota's parents didn't. Orange points out Kota should be put in therapy while Green says Kota is a child who does not really know what he's saying and how hurtful it is. Pink and Purple join the argument, with Pink also excusing Kota due to his age. * SetRightWhatOnceWasWrong: In the BadFuture, the Villains went on a rampage that killed everyone in Japan except their forces and the eight time travelers (plus Eri). Future Eri uses Rewind to send them back in time to prevent the League of Villains and Paranormal Liberation Front from forming, events which led to that bad future. Stain still manages to make his Villain-inspiring speech and they fail to stop the formation of the LOV.

* MakeItLookLikeAnAccident: Discussed. The UA Commission Hero asks if the President wants Hawks to be killed in a way that looks like an unfortunate accident, a Villain attack, or suicide. Mission control does not give an answer and says it is not [[GenderNeutralWriting their]] mission to carry out.
