''Alone On the Water,'' by Mad Lori, is a well-known, one-shot DeathFic in the Series/{{Sherlock}} fandom. Told though John Watson's point of view, the fic tells the [[TearJerker tragic]] tale of Sherlock Holmes and how he's given only a month to live after being diagnosed with brain cancer. For the majority of the story, John - and everybody else that knows Sherlock - is forced to watch his friend slowly die in front of him and suffer the horrible side effects of the tumor. As you can imagine, [[FromBadToWorse everything just keeps getting worse from there]].

* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: Instead if being killed by a villain, though, it's being ''slowly'' wasted away (and eventually killed) from brain cancer.

* NotSoStoic: Although John can tell that Sherlock is scared by the diagnosis, he still makes an effort to try to act like his normal self, even as his symptoms start getting worse. [[spoiler:This is possibly the reason why the breakdown that occurs after he takes the pills all the more heartbreaking]].
