It's fairly rare that an explanation for how/why he lived is given; and when it is given, it's usually due to Graham getting injured trying to save Achaka, else the reader is just expected to fill in the blanks or not question it. Queen Valanice, Graham's canonical wife (who here has been split into two women, Vee and Neese), either doesn’t exist or Vee and Neese are together as a couple instead of either getting together with Graham.

** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'' and ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaMajorasMask'':

*** Fans are very curious as to what happened to Link after ''Majora's Mask''. Did he ever reunite with Navi? Who does he end up with? With the reveal that the Hero's Shade from ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess'' is the Hero of Time as well as the current Link's ancestor, fans have written and drawn multiple ways that he could have lost one of his eyes. The general consensus is that, as an adult, Link became a soldier or knight, married Malon (with Zelda as the second option if fans don't like Link/Malon), and/or somehow died alone at a young age.

*** A popular topic is finding a way for Link and Saria to be together. The most popular method is having Saria grow up, and several authors have provided explanations. ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2383149/1/The-Legend-of-Zelda-The-Evil-Within The Legend of Zelda: The Evil Within]]'' explains that Saria was, like Link, a Hylian who was brought to the forest by a war refugee. Unlike Link, the old Great Deku Tree couldn't foresee what her destiny was, so she was cursed to stop growing at a certain point and be, for all intents and purposes, a Kokiri. One day, she accidentally fell into the fountain of a Great Fairy, who sensed a curse on her, and removed it. The next day, Mido noticed that Saria was bigger than normal, so she went to the Deku Tree to seek guidance, at which point he revealed the truth, saying she was aging to her actual age of 19, and that to make it in the outside world, she had to find Link, who ultimately found her being attacked by bandits outside of Kakariko Village. ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2869647/1/Alone-Together Alone Together]]'' states that, as a Sage, Saria can leave the forest and not die, but at the cost of eternal youth. This being a Link/Saria story, you can guess which she chooses.
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTheMinishCap'': This game's backstory involves a legendary hero known as the "Hero of Men." He is heavily implied to be an incarnation of Link, but his story hasn't been featured in a game yet. Fans have thus had to write their own interpretations of his life.
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess'':
*** There are a bevy of post-game Midna/Link fanfics that involve Midna either remaining in Hyrule for some reason (often Link stopping her with a love confession) or Link searching for a way to get to the Twilight Realm to be with her (or some new problem in Hyrule manages to tie into that desire anyway). A variant includes Link and Midna having made love sometime during the adventure (generally during the "last night" before she leaves through the mirror), with Midna discovering that she's pregnant after returning, prompting her to figure out a way back to Link so they can raise their child together.
*** Post-canon fics where Link returns to Ilia after years away looking how to [[spoiler:reunite with Midna]]. Sometimes Link and Ilia even have a kid together from a fling Link had before he went on his journey.
** After ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSkywardSword Skyward Sword]]'', a lot of fics had Link and/or Zelda find about Demise's DyingCurse, and how it has been responsible for Ganon always coming back to torment them time and time again for Goddesses know how long, and deciding to find a way to undo the curse and make sure that this time Ganon ''stays'' dead. Bonus points if Ganondorf finds out himself and ''also'' wants to undo the curse out of frustration that his life is being controlled in such a way, resulting in an EnemyMine.
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild'': Many Zelda/Link fics taking place after the Calamity cast Link as an AmnesiacLover while Zelda struggles with him not fully remembering her or their relationship if they're portrayed as having had one before the Calamity. These usually end with either Link remembering his past feelings for Zelda or not regaining the rest of his memories but falling in love with her anyway.

** Several bring Agent 3, Agent 4, and Agent 8 together as a PowerTrio, usually with Agent 8 as a prodigious rookie and FishOutOfWater in Inkopolis, Agent 3 as the seasoned, [[TheComicallySerious comically serious]] leader, and Agent 4 as the [[CheerfulChild cheerful]] BunnyEarsLawyer to round them out.

* ''Franchise/{{Metroid}}'': Thanks to the series hitting a nineteen-year long CliffhangerWall after ''VideoGame/MetroidFusion'', there are many {{Continuation}} fics that build off the ending's implication that Samus is now a fugitive being hunted by the Galactic Federation. Trailers for ''VideoGame/MetroidDread'' show that this is not the case, with Samus being hired by the Federation to investigate a planet to make sure that the X really are extinct.

** One plotline that really took off following the release of ''VideoGame/{{Deltarune}}'' involves Frisk exploring the monsters' capital city and meeting Suzy, a character who is mentioned in-game [[TheGhost but never appears in person]]. While her exact appearance and personality will vary, she'll always resemble a younger version of ''Deltarune''[='s=] Susie.

** With the reveal in Week 6 that Daddy Dearest subjected [[spoiler:Spirit to getting trapped in Senpai's dating sim game]], with the latter's dialogue implying that many others who met him suffered similar punishment, plenty of scenarios explore characters who were subject to Daddy Dearests mercy. Whether it be for crossing him or [[OverprotectiveDad dating Girlfriend]], punishments range from [[VideoGame/VsTabiExBoyfriend losing everything down to being reduced to a skull with hands]], to [[VideoGame/FridayNightFunkinENTITY getting banished in a dimensional prison]], to [[VideoGame/SaltysSundayNight getting trapped in an arcade machine]].

[[SturgeonsLaw When poorly written]], the fic ends up being a novelization of the game with the OC shoehorned in. A common unwritten rule when writing these kinds of fics nowadays is "Don't give your OC a Keyblade and don't make Sora fall in love with them."

*** Speaking of named characters, in addition to fics that explore Off the Hook's backstory, ''Octo Expansion'' gave birth to a variation involving Agent 3 taking in Agent 8 (or otherwise serving as her guide to the surface) while Pearl and Marina act as {{Parental Substitute}}s, often with the two agents developing a romance. Later on still, the reveal of ''Splatoon 3''[='=]s idol group (Deep Cut) led to stories depicting Shiver as a former Octarian solider who was taken in by Frye and Big Man several years ago after being found traumatized and alone in the Splatlands. Once again, often with Shiver and Frye developing a romance.

*** For the same reasons as the above, an Inkling finding/rescuing and living with an Octoling was also a common plotline prior to ''Octo Expansion'' and ''Splatoon 3'' having their societies begin to freely interact once again. These stories often than not end in romance as well. [[HilariousInHindsight Ironically enough]], the second game has this serve as Pearl and Marina's backstory, with their early friendship matching the usual staples of such plots almost beat for beat.

** Some stories bring Agent 3, Agent 4, and Agent 8 together as a PowerTrio, usually with Agent 8 as a rookie understudy and FishOutOfWater in Inkopolis, Agent 3 as the seasoned, [[TheComicallySerious comically serious]] leader, and Agent 4 as the [[CheerfulChild cheerful]] BunnyEarsLawyer to round them out.

** Almost all fanfiction deals with an Inkling who has just moved into Inkopolis, usually meeting with some of the shopkeepers and/or an established squad and getting into Turf Wars. Depending on the fic, this Inkling will also either become a member of the Squidbeak Splatoon (undertaking the games' story modes or an entire new adventure) or be a civilian who unknowingly befriends one of the agents.
** The Octolings are a fountain of fanfic all by themselves. Common plots involve their life in the underground domes, [[MookHorrorShow their increasing terror]] [[WhatTheHellAreYou of Agent 3]], and occasionally their forays into Inkopolis. A lot of the time these are all mixed together.
*** For the same reasons as the above, an Inkling finding/rescuing and living with an Octoling is also a common plotline, with it more often than not ending in romance. ** Role-reversal [=AUs=] where Callie won the Splatfest and Marie ended up kidnapped instead of Callie.

** How did Marina end up above ground and how did she meet Pearl? Many fanfic try to solve these questions. As mentioned above, the ''Octo Expansion'' filled in some of the blanks, which actually ''increased'' the number of these stories, since writers now had a solid base surrounding Marina's culture shock and tech genius to expand upon and explore in-depth.
** Some stories bring Agent 3, Agent 4, and Agent 8 together as a PowerTrio, usually with Agent 8 as a rookie understudy and FishOutOfWater in Inkopolis, Agent 3 as the seasoned, [[TheStoic stoic]] leader, and Agent 4 as the [[CheerfulChild cheerful]] BunnyEarsLawyer to round them out. When hanging out, Agent 4 is usually the one to lead and teach Agent 8 more about Inkopolis, while Agent 3 [[DefrostingIceQueen uses the time to relax and have fun]] and/or quietly look over them like a CoolBigSis.
** It's incredibly common for fanfic writers and artists to not only depict Pearl and Marina taking in Agent 8 following the events of ''Octo Expansion'', but also have Agent 8 affectionately referring to the duo as her parents, even if she ends up living on her own or with another character (usually Agent 3). This occasionally gets expanded to Agent 4 referring to Marie (to varying levels of seriousness) as her "mom" as well.
