    In General

Azur Lane

Originally founded in 1931 as a joint research venture between the world's four major powers, its sole purpose was to find a way to weaponize the power of the wisdom cubes, resulting in the creation of the kansen/shipgirls. However, the organization was disbanded after the Ironblood invasion of Poland in 1939, with its member nations each opting to conduct their own shipgirl programs instead. And so Azur Lane would have faded into history, if not for a lone Eagle Union commander and his sole kansen being reassigned to an abandoned Azur Lane base in a last ditch effort to salvage the Union's own shipgirl project...
  • Rag Tag Bunch Of Misfits: The kansen that comprise Azur Lane's fleet are mostly deserters, former prisoners, and reassigned castoffs.
  • Science Hero: The purpose of Azur Lane and its later recommission is to research and develop new methods in fighting Crimson Axis and the Sirens. Much of the series revolves around the kansen of Azur Lane finding out their real capabilities and creating new technologies.
  • Order Reborn: A somewhat inadvertent example; Thorson initially has no conscious intent to revive the organization, but starts to realize that he's restoring its original spirit of international cooperation as he recruits more and more kansen from different factions.
  • True Companions: Despite coming from a number of oft-opposing factions, the kansen gradually develop a strong camaraderie as they get to know each other over time.
  • Turn in Your Badge: Temporarily; after defying Rear Admiral Spruance's orders, Thorson is declared AWOL and as such his fleet is technically an independent group during the Battles of the Coral Sea and Midway. Thorson is quickly reinstated into the Union Navy afterwards, but High Command is forced to accept Azur Lane's operational independence.

    Commander Andrew Thorson

Commander Andrew Thorson

Nationality: Eagle Union

The protagonist of the story, Thorson is a former submariner who has just been assigned to the Eagle Union's shipgirl project, only to find himself suddenly in charge of the whole thing after his colleagues and superiors are all killed at Pearl Harbor.
  • Amazon Chaser: Naturally, given that his love interests are all humanoid warships; Downes even explicitly lampshades how he seems to have a thing for strong, independent women.
  • Badass Transplant: Tennessee implants Akagi's wisdom shard into Thorson's chest as a last ditch effort to save him from the effects of the Mirror Sea. This ends up granting him a handful of new powers, such as being able to use a Psychic Link to effortlessly coordinate his entire fleet while within a Mirror Sea, as well as the ability to utilize the same sort of Deflector Shields as his kansen.
  • Benevolent Boss: His ultimate goal may be to defeat the Sirens, but he also genuinely cares about the personal well-being of all the members of his fleet, and will willingly go out of his way to ensure their happiness.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Make no mistake; Thorson is a genuinely kind man, but if you're an immediate threat to the lives of either himself or his beloved kansen, he will not hesitate to end you.
  • Character Development: He starts off with virtually no command experience and not all that much in the way of interpersonal skills either, but gradually learns to become both an effective leader and a dear friend to his fleet.
  • Chick Magnet: A good portion of his fleet is rather interested in getting into his pants; the most notable include Laffey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Fusou, Yamashiro, Arizona, and Cleveland. He's initially reluctant to reciprocate their feelings for fear of ruining fleet cohesion and abusing his authority, but eventually accepts their feelings when he realizes that they're genuinely willing to share (and more than capable of killing him should he abuse their trust).
  • Chivalrous Pervert: After accepting his kansen's feelings for him, Thorson becomes a lot more open about expressing his sexual attraction towards them, while still remaining just as kind as ever towards them.
  • Commanding Coolness: His promotion to Commander was solely for the purpose of giving him a high enough rank to work in the highly-classified Union shipgirl project, but he manages to become a genuine leader in his own right.
  • Covert Pervert: He certainly finds the more shapely kansen quite nice to look at, particularly when they're not wearing much or anything at all, but he's generally good about keeping it in his head when said kansen aren't his lovers, barring a few slips of the tongue or so.
  • Gallows Humor: Cleveland notes that Thorson tends to resort to sarcastic humor to stay calm during intense situations.
  • Knighting: He is officially knighted (sword and all) by Warspite, with his new title of "Knight Commander" giving him the authority to command most Royal Navy shipgirls (including Warspite herself).
  • It's All My Fault: As Commander, he feels the need to take responsibility for anything that happens under his watch, even things that are genuinely out of his control.
    • He blames himself for not being able to save Arizona from death, though that guilt is somewhat alleviated once Arizona is resurrected.
    • He initially blames himself for not being able to spare Nachi, though Pennsylvania is able to remind him that though he did basically kill her, he should save his anger for the people who put her into the line of fire to begin with.
    • After being forced to retreat from Java, he takes full responsibility for the defeat, and vows to find a way to counter Kaga's airpower the next time they meet.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Zigzagged. Due to Laffey's clear romantic interest in him, several members of his fleet suspect that he has an interest in teenage-looking shipgirls. He doesn't have that sort of fetish specifically, but he does end up sleeping with Downes, Z23, Laffey, and Javelin.
  • Noble Bigot: Despite his kindness towards the kansen, Thorson still has a bit of trouble shaking off the anti-black prejudice he was raised with; despite being the one to request Fredrick Miles's transfer to Azur Lane in the first place, Thorson still initially treats him with hostile suspicion. That said, with a bit of prodding from Brooklyn, he gradually softens towards Miles, and eventually acknowledges him as being just as much a member of the fleet as any of the shipgirls.
  • Non-Action Guy: He has absolutely zero combat experience when he's transferred to the Union shipgirl project; he explicitly became a submarine engineer because he wanted to contribute his intelligence rather than his brawn to the war effort (having worked in his father's construction business prior to enlisting), and his reassignment was never meant to be a combat posting in the first place. Even after he learns to be an effective frontline commander, he still doesn't engage in any of the actual fighting, given that his kansen are far more powerful than he himself can ever hope to be.
  • Only Sane Man: Until Fredrick Miles's transfer, he's the only person at the Azur Lane base with anything resembling a normal upbringing, and ends up having to constantly compensate for his fleet's myriad eccentricities and hang-ups.
  • Parental Substitute: The little Mutsuki-class destroyers come to regard him as somewhat of a surrogate father, while Thorson comes to think of them to some degree as his "children".
  • Red Baron: He eventually becomes known as the infamous "Knight of the Union" among Kaga and Akagi's forces.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming:
    • Similarly to how Andrew was the first disciple of Jesus Christ, Andrew Thorson is the first human to realize the true potential of kansen.
    • "Thorson" literally means "son of Thor", and like his divine Norse namesake, Andrew Thorson develops a reputation as a master of the battlefield. Thor is also infamous for having many lovers, and Thorson himself ends up gaining quite the harem. Additionally, the Norse mythology-based naming is rather appropriate for a man commanding of a fleet of valkyrie-like women.
  • Sole Survivor: The only member of the Union's shipgirl project to survive Pearl Harbor, leaving him in charge of the whole thing.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Thorson is a practicing Christian, which makes him stand out quite a bit among the mostly irreligious (or Shintoist, in the case of the Sakura) kansen.

    Laffey

Laffey

RetrofitClick here to see her new appearance

Nationality: Eagle Union

Class: Benson

Classification: Destroyer

A Benson-class destroyer assigned to Pearl Harbor, Laffey becomes the first shipgirl to join Thorson's side when the two are given orders to reestablish the Pacific Azur Lane base.

  • The Alcoholic: Has a tendency to gulp down bourbon like a fish, having developed the habit to forget her mistreatment at the hands of Union sailors and officers.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Despite her seemingly lackadaisical attitude towards everything, Laffey's really a gentle and caring soul at heart; she's devoted to her friends, quick to befriend even people from other factions like Akashi and Shiranui, and genuinely hates hurting even her enemies despite her ferocity in combat.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Thorson is the first human to ever show Laffey genuine compassion and care. It's no wonder she becomes devoted to him.
  • Berserk Button: A key thing to remember whenever dealing with Laffey: Don't mess with Thorson or any of her other friends unless you want her to enter "Annihilation Mode" and start force-feeding you plasma; Hiei learns this the hard way at Midway.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She may be a ditzy sleepyhead most of the time, but she's an absolute force to be reckoned with in battle.
  • Blood Knight: She may be a sweetheart, but she becomes absolutely vicious in a fight, with this aspect of her personality becoming noticeably ramped up after being retrofitted.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: A near-literal case; Laffey may be eccentric and often drunk, but she's one of Thorson's strongest destroyers; during the attack on Pearl Harbor, she's able to successfully defend herself from Sakura aircraft while fast asleep.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Zig-zagged. She is generally fine with sharing Thorson with the other kansen, especially after realizing that Thorson will always hold her dearly no matter how large (and sexy) the rest of his fleet becomes. However, until Thorson finally sleeps with her as well, she does become vocally jealous whenever she gets wind of the other shipgirls having sex with him, though never with any real venom.
  • Expressive Accessory: Her rabbit ears are wholly mechanical, but they still move in accordance with her mood. Amusingly, she tends to get a bit jealous when meeting kansen with actual bunny ears.
  • Fanservice Pack: Her absorption of Zed's red wisdom cube gives her a retrofit form that is slightly more physically mature (for one thing, she's no longer shorter than Javelin and Zed), and significantly more revealing in terms of clothing.
  • From the Mouths of Babes: She may have the appearance and demeanor of a young teenager, but thanks to Chicago, she knows a lot more about sex than Thorson feels comfortable with.
  • Hates Being Alone: After being shunned by her previous COs and being separated from her best friends for years, Laffey has developed a serious fear of abandonment, having developed her habit of guzzling down bourbon to forget the pain of loneliness.
  • Necessary Drawback: Her retrofitted plasma cannon is incredibly powerful, but she can only use it a few times at most before she has to rest to recover her strength.
  • Sleepy Head: Sports a perpetually sleepy look on her face, and one of her favorite pastimes is taking naps, to the point where she will sometimes request permission from Thorson to take one.
  • Took a Level in Badass: When Laffey absorbs Zed's red wisdom cube, she gains a new form retrofitted with Siren technology, most noticeably a Plasma Cannon that activates whenever she goes into "Annihilation Mode".
  • Tranquil Fury: When Laffey is truly angry, her voice and general demeanor may still come off as lackadaisical as always, but she will become ultra-focused on eliminating the offending target.
  • Undying Loyalty: Out of gratitude for his kindness, Laffey will do virtually anything for Thorson, no matter the risk. She's also devoted to her closest friends Javelin, Z23, and Ayanami, and will refuse to fire upon them no matter the situation.

    Akashi

Akashi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akashi_6.png

Nationality: Sakura Empire

Class: Akashi

Classification: Repair Ship

  • Beware the Silly Ones: In Chapter 70, Akashi took part in "defanging" Akagi. While Akashi admitted that she took no pride in what she was about to do, she also admitted that she won't felt bad about it either.
  • Cowardly Lion: While lacking much on the bravery department, Akashi is ready to step in to protect her friends. Her time with Azur Lane does help her become braver.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Finding a safe place to hide from your former allies is a good call; hiding out at an island base which everyone knows about, not so much. Of course, if she hadn't she never would have met Thorson.
  • Shopkeeper: Once owned a shop back in the Sakura Empire, so she now establishes one at Azur Lane base where she helps procure supplies from merchant ships.
  • The Medic: Being a repair ship, Akashi can assist in stitching up the other Kansen back into combat form.
  • The Smart Guy: She is Azur Lane's tech expert. Having the most knowledge about the Wisdom Cubes, she is tasked in fixing the Kansens' riggings or further advancing the Cubes for other uses.
    • It's later revealed in Chapter 12 that Akashi is responsible for creating the Bulin.
  • Undying Loyalty: Akashi proves her devotion to Shiranui by salvaging her body following her murder by Akagi and leaves to find sanctuary for them.

Shiranui

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/340px_shiranui.png

Nationality: Sakura Empire

Class: Kagerou

Classification: Destroyer

  • Cute Ghost Girl: Unfortunately, this is a state she did not become out of her own free will; it's revealed that Akagi murdered her for speaking against her plan in allying with the Sirens. If it wasn't for Akashi and her own willpower, Shiranui would have been permanently dead.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She always makes snide remarks whenever she's with Thorson who can dish out the same as well, leading to Snark-to-Snark Combat.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: A serious example. Shiranui stepped us as the responsible one and lectures to Yukikaze that War Is Hell after recognizing the latter's carefree attitude about her participation in the Battle of Midway.
  • Hey, You!: Whenever the two interact, Shiranui refers to Thorson as "Idiot Shikikan". The only time she refers to her CO as just "Shikikan" is when she acknowledges his competence.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: She will not stand by and let someone call Commander Thorson an idiot, because that's her job.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Back when she was in the Sakura Empire, she openly voiced against Akagi and Kaga's plan to ally the Sakura Kansen with the Sirens. This act led to her near-death at Akagi's hands.
  • Power Of Hate: Shiranui reveals to Thorson that she uses her newfound hatred towards Akagi and Kaga to claw her way back to the living.
  • Revenge: Shiranui makes it clear to her Azur Lane compatriots that she wants nothing more than to have payback against Akagi for murdering her.
  • Sassy Secretary: Sums up Shiranui's character nicely.
  • When She Smiles: Sports this when she's finally reunited with one of her sisters.

Pennsylvania

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_1pennsylvania.png

Nationality: Eagle Union

Class: Pennsylvania

Classification: Battleship

  • Affectionate Nickname: Pennsylvania has two nicknames to go by: Penny and Valkryie.
  • The Big Guy: She, along with Tennessee, were Azur Lane's heavy hitters. Her sheer ferocity as she unleashes her bullets and shells was more than enough to convince Thorson that she should not be messed with.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Once she learned of her sister's death, Pennsylvania unleashes her full wrath upon the Sakura Empire.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: In the early chapters of the story, Pennsylvania has already become cynical after her experiences with Eagle Union and vengeful towards the Sakura Empire for the death of her sister. After meeting Thorson, all that negativity slowly fades away, finally dissipating once she regains Arizona. With Arizona back, she can allow herself to fall for her Commander.
  • Foil:
    • To Fusou. Both are older siblings willing to go to extreme lengths to protect their respective little sisters. The difference between them is that other than them belonging to different factions, Pennsylvania is distant and hardened in contrast to the more calm and elegant Fusou. Pennsylvania prefers skimpy clothing while Fusou wears her more modest kimono.
    • To Nevada. When their little sisters perished, Nevada opted to commit suicide to be with hers, but Pennsylvania chooses to fight on to avenge Arizona.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Arizona's death hit Pennsylvania really hard. She tells Thorson to bury her sister's Cubes so that she can find peace in her mind and start focusing on taking down the Sakura Empire.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Penny reveals she's a dog person hence why she takes an instant liking to Yuudachi. She does make exceptions for the other cute animal-like Kansen.
  • Lady of War: Her offense against the Sakura Empire left an impression for Thorson that he calls her Valkyrie, a female warrior from Norse mythology.
  • What You Are in the Dark: When presented the opportunity to kill a small group of Sakura Kansen, Pennsylvania, who has the most personal reason out of her comrades to hate the Sakura Empire, chooses to follow Thorson's orders and spare their lives.
  • You Killed My Father: She develops a vendetta against all of Sakura Empire and the Sirens for the death of her sister. This stance softens after she gets Arizona back.

Tennessee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_39134_444186024.png

Nationality: Eagle Union

Class: Tennessee

Classification: Battleship

  • Affectionate Nickname: She has one coined by Downes: Belle. But the reasons for it do not amuse Tennessee.
  • And This Is for...: Just before she slices Hiryuu's ship, she yells out that this act is for Nevada.
  • Bad Boss: Her relationship with Admiral Hawkins was not what you call tolerable, especially when the latter used the former to have an affair with and cheat on his wife . These negative feelings would then be transferred into her relationship with Thorson as Tennessee even briefly relapses on this, mistaking Thorson for him. This reaches a boiling point when after learning about Thorson's marriage with Kaga, Tennessee sees this as a betrayal and makes an attempt on his life.
  • Bash Brothers: Forms a solid bond with Downes who shares her passion in battle.
  • The Big Guy: Prior to the Big Seven's arrival, Tennessee was one of Azur Lane's best combat experts. Her performance against Jintsuu was brutal that it even scared Kaga.
  • Humble Pie: After being a Jerkass to Thorson, Tennessee got called out by the latter to have a duel with Laffey. Laffey humiliated Tennessee in front of the other Kansen and Thorson aimed a gun at her head to force her to comply to his command.
  • Ice Queen: That's her entire character at first, but that soon changes. Initially, she hated Thorson's guts, fearing that he'll turn on her and her comrades like what Eagle Union did to them. Over time, she realizes that wasn't the case and his kindness towards the Kansen being completely genuine makes her fall for him.
    • Pennsylvania reveals that prior to Thorson's arrival, Tennessee had sent an officer to the infirmary. Thorson wisely chooses not to learn about it lest he wants a good pounding from her.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: It's honestly clear that both Eagle Union and Kansen don't have a good opinion about Tennessee.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As the story progresses, Tennessee reveals her soft spots for the people she cares for:
    • She chews out Pennsylvania, Arizona, Fusou, and Yamashiro for disregarding Thorson's opinion on the Unwanted Harem situation, condemning them as hypocrites for taking the same actions as their former factions who devalued them.
    • Tennessee loves her sister, California. Eagle Union navy high command is lucky that she's far away at Azur Lane, because she would've pummeled them for not treating California properly.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: She has a manjuu named Ares.
  • Not So Above It All: If you expected her to show no interest in the adorable little Manjuu, then you'd be quite surprised.
  • Tattoo as Character Type: Tennessee has West Virginia tattooed two small black Sakura flower on her left arm, to signify her triumphs over Sakura Empire in battle.
  • The Mistress: Tennessee once had an intimate and possibly sexual relationship with Admiral Hawkins. That is until one day, she sees Hawkins's wife and child and realizes that her commanding officer had manipulated her into becoming his "side squeeze".
  • Tsundere: Let's put it this way: one minute she'll rant on about how useless and trashy Commander Thorson is, and the next minute, she'll claim that he's HER useless and trashy Commander. Love's complicated indeed.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • She calls the other Kansen out for treating Thorson less like a person making them no different to Eagle Union who had treated them the same way.
    • She's on the receiving on this by Thorson who is utterly furious that the former tried to kill him under the belief that he was going to marry Kaga without considering that Thorson is trying hard to find a way out of that arrangement.
  • Yandere: She completely spirals into this. She attacks Thorson after believing he is going to marry Kaga and abandon her much like how Hawkins did to her.

Brooklyn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_brooklyn.png

Nationality: Eagle Union

Class: Brooklyn

Classification: Light Cruiser

  • Ambadassador: She's a skilled diplomat and a Kansen.
  • Bookworm: Brooklyn has a passion for reading books. So when learning that there is a library at the Azur Lane base, she lit up like a Christmas tree.
  • Brutal Honesty: She certainly doesn't mince words when she criticizes Thorson's work ethics and his Unwanted Harem.
  • Commuting on a Bus: Brooklyn has made scarce appearances within the story after being assigned in escorting the USS Demeter. Her returns usually means she has big news for her comrades.
  • Offscreen Romance: She tells Thorson how she and Captain Stevens entered a relationship during her mission to escort him, which began when she was returning a novel to him one night.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Considering that she is the most sophisticated of her group of deserters and Thorson pegged her skills to be more effective as his diplomat, the specs fits very well for her.
  • The Smart Guy: Thorson took notice of Brookyln's potential skill as a diplomat and has her sent out to negotiate with Eagle Union and most importantly, convince any Kansen they come across to defect and/or join Azur Lane.

Downes

  • Took a Level in Badass: During her close-combat fight against Naka, Downes requests power from the Wisdom Cube of Houston's ship, and it allows her to absorb it. Her new rigging comes with a more mature body and a new outfit.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Downes develops uncertainty within herself after witnessing the closeness between Laffey and Thorson. She later realized it was a feeling of love.
    • This culminates to when she realizes her own feelings for Ooshio. After consoling with Thorson and Yamashiro and engaging a threesome with them, she decides to commit a relationship with the cat-girl.

Cassin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cassin_1.jpg

Nationality: Eagle Union

Class: Mahan

Classification: Destroyer

  • An Arm and a Leg: Like her sister, Downes, she lost several limbs following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Thankfully, she gets them back.
  • Butt-Monkey: Cassin is always the first to be taken out in battle. And yet, she somehow manages to survive all of them thankfully and even earns a purple heart medal for her troubles at Midway.
  • Commuting on a Bus: She takes part in an escort mission so she wasn't around in Azur Lane a lot.
  • The Slacker: Cassin would prefer hitting the hay rather than going out into the fields.

Cleveland

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cleveland.jpg

Nationality: Eagle Union

Class: Cleveland

Classification: Light Cruiser

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In real life history, Cleveland's counterpart was not even around the time of Pearl Harbor, having not been commissioned yet. Here, she is.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Cleveland's conversation with Thorson following their establishment of their mental link implies that she has romantic feelings for Helena. This is further supported when Cleveland remarks that her feelings for Commander Thorson are exactly how she feels for Helena.
  • Anti-Air: She's a premier Anti-Air light cruiser; If you need someone to send those pesky fighters and bombers packing, she's your shipgirl.
  • Cool Big Sis: She looks out for those she cares for. While that's a noble trait, it's also her weakness as she bears that burden alone and she fears about not meeting those expectations.
  • Good People Have Good Sex: Cleveland becomes the first Kansen to sleep with Thorson and she's all too happy to brag about it. She later has a second time with him at the Hot Springs Episode.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Cleveland believes this to be the case and inquires Thorson about this. However,...
Cleveland: Commander, am I pretty like they are?
Thorson: You're nothing like they are; But you're very pretty.
  • Music for Courage: Cleveland develops a knack for this following the defense against the Siren Attack in Chapter 28. Either she does this to cope with the horrors of war or to boost morale within her group or both.
  • Tomboy: Cleveland's noted to have a boyish charm which contrasts towards her other feminine comrades. It's because of these traits of hers that makes Cleveland worry that she won't suit Thorson's tastes. Thorson proves her wrong.

Portland

RetrofitClick here to see her new appearance

Nationality: Sakura Empire

Class: Fusou

Classification: Battleship/Aviation Battleship

  • Big Sister Instinct: She uses every prayer and mysticism in her book to bring her sister back from the dead and she succeeded. This in turn leads Thorson to realize that resurrection of a Kansen is 100% possible.
  • Hotter and Sexier: After receiving her Retro-fit, Fusou's breasts and rear gain a significant increase in size. Unfortunately to her dismay, this affects her posture for a while.
  • Miko: Her original role back at Sakura Empire is a shrine priestess that serves the Sakura Gods, making her a spiritual leader as well. Azur Lane realizes that with her position, she'll be able to sway her fellow Sakura away from Akagi and Kaga's influence.
  • Properly Paranoid: Fusou and Yamashiro were ordered to undergo a new retrofit process to modify their riggings but the former immediately deduced that it was a ploy by Akagi and Kaga to quell them. She forms a plan and succeeds in escaping alongside her sister.
  • Taking Up the Mantle: Fusou takes it upon herself to be the one that leads the Sakura loyalists against Akagi and Kaga; a role that Nagato was heavily reluctant to do so. This makes her have very much in common with Commander Thorson who is also a leader of his own faction hence the reason why they fell for one another.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_arizona.png

Nationality: Eagle Union

Class: Pennsylvania

Classification: Battleship

  • And I Must Scream: Arizona reveals what her state was prior to her revival.
Arizona: I called out but had no voice. My eyes were open but I couldn't see. I tried to reached out but my body wouldn't move an inch.
  • Back from the Dead: She finally returns in Chapter 25 thanks to Thorson and Pennsylvania.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She certainly can hold a grudge which is justified since Kaga was the one that lead the attack that almost killed her.
  • Foil: Arizona's this to her sister, Pennsylvania. Arizona is a Nice Girl while Pennsylvania is a Lady of War. Their nicknames, both coined by Thorson, contrast with one another; Pennsylvania's nickname is "Valkyrie", refering a warrior woman while Arizona's, "Angel" refers to a holy being.
  • Healing Hands: Her skill is to heal her fleet to full health. Ironically, that ability could have saved her life during Pearl Harbor.
  • Heroic Resolve: Despite having underwent a near death experience and being urged not to take part in the war by her sister, Arizona chooses to continue the fight, not wanting any of her loved ones go through the same experience.
  • Important Hair Accessory: After befriending Yamashiro, Arizona receives a teardrop shaped hairpin and placed it on herself as a sign of their friendship.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: She has been shown to be affectionate towards the cat-like Kansen, Yukikaze who also return the sentiment.
  • Nice Girl: As opposed to her older sister, Arizona is kind, polite and well-mannered which earns her the nickname "Angel" from her lover. She even become close friends with Yamashiro despite the latter once being from the same faction that almost killed her.
  • Rescue Romance: Why would she fall for Thorson? Well, when a man comes to you and stays by your side when you're near Death's doors and look after your Wisdom Cubes like they were his closest friends, won't you repay him by being his lover? Oh, and he brings you back; that's a plus.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Before she could help in the Battle of Pearl Harbor, Arizona was shot by a Siren aircraft. Her death accomplishes two goals.
    • Showing the Darker and Edgier elements of the series; That war is violent and merciless and that anyone, human and Kansen can and will die. Even though she got resurrected later down the story, the conditions to repeat the process are very rare thus the effect is still there.
    • While their interactions was brief, Arizona's death left a huge mark on Thorson who realizes that the Kansen are more than just weapons but actual living beings.
  • Spared By Adaptation: She could have wound up like her other counterparts but Thorson's intervention allows her to undergo the conditions that make her come back possible.
  • Tragic Keepsake: All that's left of Arizona following the Attack on Pearl Harbor are her Wisdom Cubes. However, her spirit hadn't left and was actually embedded inside her Cubes; fully aware of her surroundings but unable to communicate with everyone. Also, unlike blue Wisdom Cubes, Arizona's are purple and they are her Soul Jar which allows her to be resurrected.

  • Cool Teacher: She is the one selected to teach Enterprise and Hornet how to use their newly acquired rigging.

  • Heroic BSoD: The battle at Java Sea had caused a physical and mental toll on her because of how ineffective she was against Kaga. Thankfully, her friends and allies were there to cheer her up.
  • Parental Substitute: Ark Royal takes a shine to the three little Mutsuki-class destroyers and becomes their guardian to nurture, guide, and protect them.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: She hasn't gotten over what happened to Hood nor the time she fought Bismarck.

  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Eventhough she'll most likely be executed by Sakura Empire for surrendering to Azur Lane, she won't follow suicidal orders in attacking Azur Lane nor risking one of her sister's lifes to accomplish it. It also helps her case that her closest comrades are part of the enemy fleet and she correctly figures put that they must have a good reason for abandoning their nation.
