** A common plot in ero-{{doujinshi}} is [[ADateWithRosiePalms one]] or [[HoYay/KOn more]] band members having sex in the club room, and somebody else spying and/or walking in on them.

** One type is the "Prepared Lelouch" fic, where Lelouch makes efforts towards rebellion before the fateful incident in Shinjuku. This often involves him learning martial arts and/or finding allies in Area 11.

** Post Zero Requiem PeggySue fics involving Lelouch going back in time when his last plan doesn't work out are a common fanfic type.

* Many ''LightNovel/ACertainMagicalIndex'' fans agree that [[EnsembleDarkhorse Frenda]] [[KickChick Seivelun]] from ITEM was underutilized, underdeveloped, and killed off in an undeserving manner. Some fans actually went out of their way to make FixFic where she survives for much longer and legitimately contributes to the plot, usually by forming a duo with the local TeamNormal Saten.

* ''LightNovel/DirtyPair'' fanfic [[PatchworkFic tends to blur the lines]] between the various [[AlternateContinuity Alternate Continuities]] of the series, like the '80s anime version or Adam Warren's Amerimanga.

* ''LightNovel/TheFamiliarOfZero'''s basic premise, summoning a familiar from elsewhere, allows for almost anything to replace Saito in a crossover. ''Fanfic/TheHillOfSwords'' is one such example.

* ''LightNovel/HighSchoolDXD'':

* ''LightNovel/MyNextLifeAsAVillainessAllRoutesLeadToDoom'':

* It is incredibly common in ''LightNovel/Overlord2012'' fanfics to see an AU where Momonga wasn't the only Player member of Ainz Ooal Gown present in YGGDRASIL when it was shut down, and thus transported to the New World. Sometimes it will be one or more of the established canon members, but more often than not it'll be an OC[=/=]AuthorAvatar[=/=][[SelfInsertFic self-insert]] instead. And in the case of the latter, they'll also usually have some more [=OCs=] in the form of their own [=NPCs=] with them.

** While this is almost exclusive in fanart or fan-made gamebooks, [[LightNovel/{{Slayers}} Lina Inverse]] participating is a popular choice. Due to the fact in the ''Anime/QueensBlade'' universe [[MagicIsEvil magic is seem as a taboo subject for everyone who is not an angel or a demon]] and the fact many of Lina's magic spells are [[StoryBreakerPower too powerful]], she's normally depowered or refuse to use her powers for the sake of balance.

* ''Franchise/FullmetalAlchemist'':
** If you're reading a post-movie fanfic of ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemist2003'', you can almost guarantee it's a "Edward and [[spoiler:Alphonse]] figure out how to get back to their world" fic -- with the occasional variation of "[[ChildhoodFriendRomance Winry]] or [[HoYay Roy]] or [insert preferred love interest here] goes to our world" instead.
** A lot of fics based on the [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist manga]]/''Brotherhood'' continuity will have it so Ed doesn't [[BroughtDownToNormal lose his alchemy]] at the end. And obviously, people who prefer Ed and/or Winry with other people will often write fics eliminating their OfficialCouple status.
** And ''both'' versions have tons of fics where [[SacrificialLion Hughes's]] death never happened.
** Many post-''Conqueror of Shamballa'' fics treat [[spoiler:Alfons']] death as never happening, especially those that don't involve Winry or Roy. Oftentimes he isn't even shot.
* It's a common belief that ''Manga/FushigiYuugi: Eikoden'' was a subtle jab against the sheer amount of "You get sucked into the book and becomes the new priestess" fics in the fandom.
* ''Literature/{{Gate}}'': Most fanfic writers would make fanfiction of different ideas for the series like:
** What would happen if it was another nation that was attacked by the Empire instead of Japan?
** What if Japan and the US (and possibly other nations) went into the Gate together rather than only Japan?
** What if the Gate opened during a different time period (eg. During World War 1 or 2) or into a [[ObviousCrossoverMethod different universe]]?

* Akemi Miyano having survived her death at Gin's hands. It's optional to have her shrink by the APTX 4869, which led to her being reunited with Shiho, now Ai Haibara, being shrunk by the same drug.
* KID and Conan teaming up to take down the Black Org, who are usually written to be the same organization as ''Manga/MagicKaito'''s crime syndicate.

* ''FandomSpecificPlot/CaseClosed''

* In the ''Manga/ShugoChara'' fandom, a LOT of fan fics are "Ikuto is the school playboy and has kissed every girl in the school, until the new girl Amu arrives and resists his romantic advances, will they fall in love or not?" and they also [[InnocentCohabitation usually are roommates]].

* It's common in ''Manga/FairyTail'' to see a fanfic where Natsu gives Lucy the boot after Lisanna returns, in order to milk the angst of her being abandoned and realizing she'd only been a replacement as well as create an excuse for her to run off with anyone who isn't a member of the titular guild. It's also not uncommon to see Lucy being shoved aside by Lisanna. Even for a Fandom Specific Plot, this one is baffling on every level: Lucy wasn't a replacement (Team Natsu ''wasn't a team'' before her); none of the characters are this [[RonTheDeathEater callous]]; the team's usual reason for kicking Lucy off (she's not powerful enough) goes double for Lisanna; ''canonically'' Fairy Tail defied anything resembling this when they refused to hand Lucy over to Phantom Lord during their guild war; and most important, there's ''no size limit'' for teams, so nobody needs to get booted! Oddly, while this plot seems like it would clear the way for a Natsu/Lisanna pairing, that's usually not the point. Instead, it's used by Lucy fans either to set her up with someone outside the team or to circle back to [=NaLu=] after she proves herself. A common variant of the plot is to have Lisanna use some form of trickery, usually a WoundedGazelleGambit, to turn the rest of Team Natsu against Lucy. While the people who get duped- usually Natsu, Erza and Gray- end up holding the IdiotBall at one point or another, they don't come off as badly as they do in fics that involve Lucy getting kicked out.

** If you're reading a fanfic based off ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemist2003'' that takes place after TheMovie, you can almost guarantee it's a "Edward and [[spoiler:Alphonse]] figure out how to get back to their world" fic -- with the occasional variation of "[[ChildhoodFriendRomance Winry]] or [[HoYay Roy]] or [insert preferred love interest here] goes to our world" instead.

** It's rather popular to bring Atem back from the dead or just have him never leave to begin with, usually for shipping purposes with Yugi, Kaiba, or sometimes Anzu. This became HilariousInHindsight, as ''Anime/YuGiOhTheDarksideOfDimensions''' plot is about Kaiba trying to find a way to bring him back post-series.

* ''Anime/YuGiOhARCV'':

** If you're reading a fanfic based off [[Anime/FullmetalAlchemist the 2003 anime]] that takes place after TheMovie, you can almost guarantee it's a "Edward and [[spoiler:Alphonse]] figure out how to get back to their world" fic -- with the occasional variation of "[[ChildhoodFriendRomance Winry]] or [[HoYay Roy]] or [insert preferred love interest here] goes to our world" instead.

* ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'':
** ''My Hero Academia'' has the Villain!Deku fic, where Izuku somehow winds up becoming a VillainProtagonist instead of a HeroProtagonist.
** Quirked!Deku, where he was actually born with a superpower. Often it's framed as a subtle ability that he could have realistically not discovered until he's fourteen, but you can also go the more AU route and just give him whatever Quirk you want.
** While the canonical plot as it has been rolling along has given him a few "MyGodWhatHaveIDone" moments [[spoiler:such as him figuring out that he was the UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom to All Might totally burning out his powers and being forced to retire and bursting in tears]] and thus showcase he really has a HiddenHeartOfGold (even if it doesn't seems he will ever stop being a violent JerkAss to his peers and ''especially'' Deku), many plots have Bakugou getting a pretty hefty dose of humble pie force-fed -- anything from being ostracized by the rest of the class, going through being forced to go through anger management because said canonical violent attitude [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome really freaks people out, even the more experienced supers]] and going up to Deku snapping and giving him a WhosLaughingNow or Bakugou BullyingADragon (read "villain") that [[DeadlyEuphemism cuts his hero career short]] in a very dramatic way.
** Given how [[TheScrappy universally reviled]] he is by the fandom, fics where [[DirtyKid Mineta Minoru]] is removed from Class 1-A somehow (usually being expelled for sexually harassing the girls) and replaced with another, more likable character are extremely popular, to the point that Website/ArchiveOfOurOwn has an entire tag dedicated to [=AUs=] where he doesn't even ''exist''.
** Fics where the protagonist commits suicide at the beginning, usually to discover that he has some kind of death-related Quirk.

** The typical ''Manga/DeathNote'' fanfic: [[CastFullOfGay L and Light are dating and so are Mello and Matt (or Mello and Near)]]; TheyFightCrime and [[TrueCompanions get along]] [[BadassCrew very well together]] despite Light being a (possibly reformed) [[AGodAmI megalomaniacal]] SerialKillerKiller and Mello (potentially) being a [[TheMafia mafia]] crime boss.

*** The obligatory RoadTrip fic.

** Some fanfics involve males getting involved with tankery in some form or another. This is often the result of Oarai becoming coed, with the reasoning that [[spoiler:even if it avoided getting shut down, it still needs financial help]], and the boys often pilot World War II-era fighter planes alongside the girls in the tanks. Said males [[SturgeonsLaw often end up]] being [[GaryStu Gary Stus]].

* ''LightNovel/HighSchoolDxD'':

** A huge amount of Kaiba/Jonouchi fanfiction seems to be about how the mighty Kaiba rescues poor, defenceless Jonouchi from his abusive father, often finding him beaten half to death in a dark alley. He then offers him to live with him "temporarily". You can probably imagine how this one ends. Expect Jonouchi's TrueCompanions to be suspiciously absent.

* In ''Anime/YuGiOhARCV'', most authors prefer to just rewrite or overhaul the entire story, mainly due to the unavoidable in hindsight GainaxEnding. A common thread usually involves [[spoiler:the counterparts all regaining their bodies and living HappilyEverAfter, as opposed to the canon where they all eventually reunite as one]].

*** Characters in yaoi pairings [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness switching personalities based on whether they're the seme or the uke.]] (For example, a fic labeled 1x2 will have grumpy Heero paired with bubbly Duo, where a fic labeled 2x1 will have a [[BastardBoyfriend mean and bitter]] Duo paired with a heavily wimpified Heero.)

** A fairly popular story idea is an OC, who may or may not be a stand in for the author, going to boot camp with the rest of the characters in the 104th, falling in love with one of the canon characters (Usually [[EnsembleDarkhorse Annie]] [[TheMole Leonhart]]), and then joining the Recon Corps so they can continue to be involved in the main characters adventures. Due to the fact that manga is both pretty long and ongoing, these stories don't normally end, and often times just end up going on indefinite hiatus'.
