*** When the film came out, it did ''not'' take long for fans to start shipping [[TragicVillain Kylo Ren]] with [[ActionGirl Rey]]. Fans were intrigued by the characters' intense [[FoeRomanceSubtext interactions]], considering them to be ''much'' more interesting and ripe with [[FanficFuel possibilities]] than the potential for a Rey/Finn romance. The fact that it is strongly suggested that Kylo Ren has a VillainousCrush on Rey--he bridal carries her, watches her sleep and even volunteers to be her teacher--only added fuel to the fire. However, the ship is the source of a major BrokenBase, with many other fans disliking FoeYay or theorizing that they might end up being related.

However, the ship was met with derision, with fans claiming that Rey/Finn was the obvious romantic pairing and that Rey was probably Kylo Ren's [[spoiler:''cousin'']] (based on a popular theory that Rey was [[spoiler:Luke Skywalker's daughter]]). However, that theory was eventually debunked by WordofGod. John Boyega (who plays Finn) also clarified in an [[http://variety.com/2016/film/news/star-wars-episode-viii-darker-bigger-john-boyega-1201774027/ interview]] that Rey and Finn were ''just friends'' and would not be developing a romance of any kind.

*** Actually the ship was met with derision for pairing up the mass murderer who kidnapped the terrified Rey against her will. Holding her in an interrogation room helpless and in obvious terror while telling her [[UnfortunateImplications he can take anything he wants.]] Attempting to [[MindRape force himself into her mind. Causing her obvious trauma and pain]] Only failing when she fought back with the force.[[{{Patricide}} Killing the nearest thing to a father figure in front of her, and his actual father.]] Slamming her into a tree and mortally wounding her best friend who tried to stop him. Funny enough the whole possible incest thing is the least problematic thing some fans have with that ship.
*** Funny enough, is not the aptly named Reylo who wins the fan favorite race in both amounts of fanart and fanfiction, but the practically non existent canon relationship between [[TragicVillain Kylo Ren]] and [[KnightTemplar General Hux]]. It quite literally doubles the amount of works on Archive of our Own for the first one, and keeps winning momentum. See [[http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Rey*s*Ben%20Solo%20%7C%20Kylo%20Ren/works here]] and [[http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Hux*s*Ben%20Solo%20%7C%20Kylo%20Ren/works here]]. It doesn't help that Reylo has been branded as abusive and problematic in many parts of the fandom, creating a massive backlash against it.

* There was a good amount of fans shipping Gandalf and Galadriel from {{Lord of the Rings}} but then [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZZloOPRnQ8 that one scene from the Hobbit]] blew it up. The other movies and the RL relationship between the actors that played them do nothing but fuel the fire.
