** Almost immediately after the release of ''A New Hope'' (then referred to as just ''Star Wars''), ShipToShipCombat broke out between Luke/Leia shippers and Han/Leia shippers (as well as a small, but vocal, contingent of [[SlashFic Luke/Han shippers.]]) Fanzines were flooded with letters of comment demonizing one or both of the men in favor of the opposite ship, and fans started pejoratively dubbing each other "Luke-lovers" and "Han-haters" in their letters and fanfiction. Han/Leia [[TheyDo becoming canon]] in ''The Empire Strikes Back'' despite multiple Luke/Leia ShipTease moments took the shipping wars to new heights, and the terms "Church of Ford" and "Cathedral of Luke" were coined to describe certain subsets of highly militant fans who obsessed over either Han or Luke to the point of zealotry. Come ''Return of the Jedi,'' the conflict had escalated from a shipping war to a full-on fan war over which male character was better, with Luke fans dismissing Han as a shady, immoral smuggler and JerkWithAHeartOfJerk and Han fans dismissing Luke as a wide-eyed [[StupidGood idiot]] who didn't deserve to be the hero of the franchise. One can only imagine how bad it would have been if the Internet existed in the early 80s.

* ''Film/ItChapterTwo'': Myra, Eddie's wife (who is played by his mom's actor from the [[Film/It2017 first movie]]) is not very popular with shippers, with the overwhelming majority of fans shipping Eddie with [[spoiler:Richie]] and generally ignoring her existence.

* A certain portion of [[Franchise/StarTrek Kirk/Spock]] fans have had quite a bit trouble dealing with the fact that in the [[Film/StarTrek2009 reboot movie]] Spock/Uhura is canon, and [[http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/14576.html?thread=59822320#t59822320 some rather nasty stuff]] has been said about Uhura as a result. Though Uhura is a popular enough character in her own right - enough so that the majority K/S shippers would just show Uhura and Spock as having broken off their relationship amicably offscreen.

* A great number of fans of the movie ''WesternAnimation/{{Felidae}}'' are huge fans of the Francis/Felicity pairing even though [[spoiler:Felicity is [[FamilyUnfriendlyDeath brutally decapitated]] only minutes after she's introduced in the film]] and [[spoiler:the cat Francis had sex with in the film is the one who becomes his mate.]] It probably has something to do with the fact that Felicity is set up as a sweet naive IllGirl [[spoiler:shortly before she dies]]. By contrast, [[spoiler:Nhozemptekh]] - exotically pretty as she may be - is unfortunately given little character development beyond being a NubileSavage in kitty form.

* ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory'':

** Bo Peep is constantly bashed on, sometimes for getting in the way of the [[RelationshipWritingFumble Woody/Jessie]] pairing. In ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory3'', Bo is mentioned to have been [[PutOnABus sold to someone else at a yard sale]], leaving her out for good... but it's in the same movie that the [[BirdsOfAFeather Buzz/Jessie]] couple becomes more apparent. The fact that ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory4'' ends with [[spoiler: Woody leaving the others to be with Bo Peep]] has only made the Bo hatred worse in some corners.

* Phoebus, from the Disney version of ''WesternAnimation/TheHunchbackOfNotreDame,'' gets this a lot from people who prefer Esmeralda to be with either [[TheGrotesque Quasimodo]] or [[LoveMakesYouEvil Frollo]]. Instead of being the wry, sensible man he is, Phoebus is portrayed as an abusive {{Jerkass}} (completely accurate in the novel, where Phoebus is the only main character without a single redeeming quality, but not in the Creator/{{Disney}} film). Quasi/Esme shippers especially seem to think that having Esme end up with Phoebus is [[BrokenAesop a betrayal]] of the film's "Looks don't matter" message.

** Elizabeth gets called a perfectionst and bashed repeatedly for driving a wedge between the [[HoYay Jack/Will relationship]].

* One particularly nasty ''Film/{{Labyrinth}}'' fanfic had the author's SelfInsert MarySue have Jareth declare that he never loved Sarah and marry her and then literally has Sarah die for the ship. Yeah.

* In some ''Film/{{Newsies}}'' fics, Sarah is portrayed as whiny and annoying so that way Jack can get with someone else, usually a SelfInsert MarySue. [[HoYay Or David]].

** Elizabeth gets called a CanonSue and bashed repeatedly for driving a wedge between the [[HoYay Jack/Will relationship]].
** Calypso gets this from Davy Jones fangirls, who make her a horrible bitch. Granted, as a pagan goddess and physical manifestation of the ocean, she was hardly the most sympathetic character in the movie; but that's ignoring the fact that Jones himself wasn't very nice in turn (having her magically bound to human form, which she describes as "torture") as well as the fact that she clearly did still love him and was horrified to hear what he did to her. One MarySue SelfInsert fic has said Sue actually kill Calypso, and be treated as a heroine for it. Which goes against everything in the trilogy's universe, but logic be damned.

* In the ''Film/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet'' movie fandom, Lucy Barker gets some serious hate from Sweeney/Mrs. Lovett shippers and Sweeney/OC shippers. The OC who somehow manages to become Sweeney's truest of true loves ever, even though (A) he was utterly devoted to Lucy throughout the movie and (B) Sweeney was very much anti-touch. One such Sue actually got Sweeney to denounce his love for Lucy and Mrs. Lovett after both were dead, in favor of said Sue.

** Some Rey/Kylo fans demonize Finn, claiming that Finn doesn't actually respect Rey because he lied to her about being a member of the Resistance. In some particularly infamous cases, this dips into outright racism.

* A certain portion of [[Franchise/StarTrek Kirk/Spock]] fans have had quite a bit trouble dealing with the fact that in the [[Film/StarTrek2009 reboot movie]] Spock/Uhura is canon, and [[http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/14576.html?thread=59822320#t59822320 some rather nasty stuff]] has been said about Uhura as a result.

** The Finn/Rey shippers also locked target onto Rose, Finn's canon love interest in ''The Last Jedi'', portraying her as a ClingyJealousGirl who wants Finn all to herself, a DomesticAbuser who mistreats Finn, or literally killing her off for the sake of Finn getting with Rey. This died down after she was DemotedToExtra ''Rise of Skywalker'', which caused the hate she was receiving to be redirected towards Kylo.

** Sometimes, Sally gets some of this so Jack Skellington can get with the writers' [[RelationshipSue original characters]], [[SelfInsertFic the writers themselves]], [[CrossoverShip Emily, or Victor]].

!!Other films

* ''Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean'':
** Ever since Will Turner married Elizabeth Swann, many viewers who wanted Elizabeth to be with Jack Sparrow are making him out to be a rapist, an abuser, too "nice" so the Super Bad Boy is OMG better, or any/all of these together.

** Calypso gets this from Davy Jones fangirls, who make her a horrible bitch. * Technically, this trope is {{inverted|Trope}} for ''WesternAnimation/CorpseBride'': Victor/Emily shippers want ''Victor'' to die -- because Emily is dead to begin with. That said, there has been a fair amount of vilifying of Victoria in post-film Victor/Emily fanfics, portraying her as a gold digger or just plain mean to Victor. (And leaving Victoria to Barkis's tender mercies in some [=AUs=] is a FateWorseThanDeath.)

** And ''both'' Éowyn and Arwen catch heat from the fans who ship their original characters, often self-inserts, with Aragorn or Faramir. They get even more from the YaoiFangirl contingent who must have Aragorn sidling up to Legolas. (Or Boromir, which is a doomed relationship if you don't go severely AU.) In one fic, Arwen was turned into such a shrill harpy that, in a post-series tale set in the present day, she sold the mummies of her and Aragorn's children to a museum just to hurt him. (Seriously.) Éowyn is likely to get written off as "that butch chick".
*** That was Bagenders, and mostly done for RuleOfFunny and parody, as literally everyone is taken to the extremes of their character, or just blatantly out of character. Faramir is mostly painted as a bit weak (Boromir on one of his visits from the afterlife ignores a note from Faramir asking him to come back and help him on the grounds that 'she's probably pulling his hair again').

* In the ''Film/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet'' movie fandom, Lucy Barker gets some serious hate from Sweeney/Mrs. Lovett shippers and Sweeney/OC shippers. The OC who somehow manages to become Sweeney's truest of true loves ever, even though (A) he was utterly devoted to Lucy throughout the movie and (B) Sweeney was very much anti-touch. * Due to UsefulNotes/{{Bollywood}} marketing being dependent on which combo of actors and actresses is the screen couple (referred as a "jodi" by Indians and the Industry), fans of a particular screen couple (who often do several movies together if successful) will fight fans of another couple. Creator/ShahRukhKhan/Kajol is the quintessential example these days.

* ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon'' has a portion of fans who want to hook Hiccup up with [[EnsembleDarkhorse Ruffnut]] (who's rather similar to Astrid but, unlike her, is not Hiccup's official love interest), Tuffnut (Ruffnut's twin brother), or even Toothless (yes, the dragon). For that, Astrid gets bashed and labeled as shallow for showing interest in Hiccup after finding out about his dragon, even though she was the only teen that did not actively mock/tease Hiccup in the beginning and thus had less of a personality shift than the others would have.
* Many fans of ''Film/AKnightsTale'' would have preferred that William ended up with [[WrenchWench Kate]] rather than [[TheObstructiveLoveInterest Jocelyn]]. Also uses "feminist" bases since the fans like to take the PluckyGirl WrenchWench and then "give" her William as a "prize" for being a "strong female and so unlike that Jocelyn bitch"... when if they believed in Kate's strength as a character as much as they said, they wouldn't feel the need of making Kate's overall happiness depend oh so much on whether the hero liked her or not rather than on other things like her own blacksmith work.
** That's not even keeping in mind the movie's implication that [[TheMourningAfter Kate still loved and missed her dead husband.]]
*** ''And'' that Jocelyn, despite playing the obligatory "fair lady" love interest role, is shown to be quite a strong female in her own right.
* One particularly nasty ''Film/{{Labyrinth}}'' fanfic had the author's SelfInsert MarySue have Jareth declare that he never loved Sarah and marry her and then literally has Sarah die for the ship. Yeah.
* In ''Film/{{Newsies}}'' Sarah is portrayed as whiny and annoying so that way Jack can get with someone else, usually a SelfInsert MarySue. [[HoYay Or David]].
* Poor poor, poor [[Film/TransformersDarkOfTheMoon Carly Spencer]]. It's bad enough that fanboys want the actress who plays Carly (Rosie)'s head chopped off for replacing Creator/MeganFox, but according to hardcore [=SamxMikaela=] shippers, [[InsaneTrollLogic she is ugly]] (yes, the [[SarcasmMode Victoria's Secret Model is ugly]]), evil and the anti-christ who should [[KillItWithFire be burned]]. It doesn't help that Mikaela is only mentioned in passing in the 3rd film, and it's implied that she dumped Sam because she only liked him for his involvement with the Transformers...
* [[RichBitch Amber Sweet]] from ''Film/RepoTheGeneticOpera'' gets this from many Shilo/Graverobber shippers. Granted, she's hardly a good person, but what the fangirls tend to forget is that [[DracoInLeatherPants Graverobber is only slightly better]].
* ''Film/SkyHigh2005'' fandom is small and pretty much dead, but it had a bit of this in its heyday, usually going after either Gwen or Will. Gwen was typically bashed for being "[[RealWomenNeverWearDresses too girly]]" to justify Will/Layla (interestingly, the fact that [[spoiler:she ended up betraying everyone]] rarely gets brought up here, nor does [[spoiler:Lash]] doing the same thing [[DoubleStandard stop him from having an armada of fangirls]]), when Will himself isn't torn into for being "[[TheGenericGuy bland]]" or falling victim to speculation that he'd be a neglectful boyfriend to Layla, in favor of Warren/Layla. (Incidentally, one of the film's creators stated that Warren/Layla was actually planned to become official in the sequels, though the circumstances weren't explained.)
* ''Film/TheDevilWearsPrada'': Nate is generally hated by Andy/Miranda shippers. Most fanfictions portray Nate as sexist, while also making him verbally or physically abusive towards Andy. These same fics will also downplay or ignore Miranda's negative traits, in order to make her a more reasonable choice for Andy. This also happens quite often to Christian and Stephen as well. The former is often made into a creepy stalker, who doesn't get that Andy isn't interested. While the latter is often turned into a cheater, who divorced Miranda to sleep around more.
* [[{{Sequelitis}} Disney sequels]] are already mostly despised, but there's ''one'' sequel that really takes it too far, according to most fans. ''WesternAnimation/PocahontasIIJourneyToANewWorld'' has the audacity to break up the OfficialCouple of Pocahontas x John Smith and make the protagonist fall in love with John Rolfe instead! It's only logical that Disney fans would have this kind of reaction, and [[CanonDiscontinuity most refuse to acknowledge the existence of the sequel in the first place]].[[note]]The RealLife Pocahontas did in fact marry John Rolfe, but come on.[[/note]]
* Fanfics of ''Film/KickAss'' often vilify Dave's actual love interest and all around NiceGirl Katie and make her more like her comics counterpart, who was genuinely a bitch. They tend to make her a cheater, or a BitchInSheepsClothing, in order to facilitate the Dave/Mindy ship. It does not help that in the film's sequel, Katie TookALevelInJerkass and revealed she really was a bitch all along, who was cheating on Dave between the movies. This effectively made all of the fandom's vilifying canon.
* ''Film/TheMatrix'': Persephone got some of this back in the day by certain Neo/Trinity shippers due to the whole 'kiss' thing (bear in mind, Persephone told Neo to imagine he was kissing ''Trinity'' rather than Persephone herself).
* ''Film/TheSecretGarden'': The 1987 film has a bit of this outside of the story. Since the film makers made it so [[spoiler:''Colin and Mary aren't related'']], they had to get rid of [[spoiler:Dickon]]. The only way to do that was to kill him.
** The sequel to the 1987 version ''Back to The Secret Garden'' also does this when Dickon gets a fair bit of mention from Martha and Mary as he [[spoiler: died in the war before the end of the last film]] resulting in Mary and Colin [[spoiler: ending up married.]]
** Speaking of ''Back to The Secret Garden'', Lizzie Buscana is a HeartwarmingOrphan who travels to Misselthwaite Manor from America at Lady Mary [[spoiler: Craven's]] request to take the place of one of the orphan's now living at the manor in desperate need of surgery at an American hospital. When Lizzie arrives she quickly gains two LoveInterests in the form of Robert and Steven, orphans who now live and go to school at Misselthwaite Manor.
** ShipTease ensues, particularly between [[spoiler: Lizzie and Robert]] the BelligerentSexualTension becomes more obvious over time to the point where EveryoneCanSeeIt.
** Lizzie's new friend Geraldine, a BitchInSheepsClothing who later turns out to be a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, actually spurs on the plot by encouraging Steven to take the blame for Lizzie when she steals her OrphansPlotTrinket, [[spoiler: the key to the Secret Garden]], from Martha Sowerby's desk drawer.
** Lizzie and Robert become [[spoiler: an OfficialCouple]] during their FetchQuest to find the [[spoiler: original door to the Secret Garden]] which was replaced when Martha Sowerby was unable to find it after [[spoiler: Mary left for America with Colin]].
* ''Film/TheSecretGarden1993'': The 1993 version gives [[spoiler: Dickon]] a HappyEnding, although the ShipTease between Mary and Dickon and Mary and Colin gets a more [[spoiler: AmbiguousEnding]].
* Mona from ''WesternAnimation/MickeysTwiceUponAChristmas'' gets a lot of hate from ''WesternAnimation/AGoofyMovie'' fans for having the nerve to be Max's current girlfriend. Nevermind it's been years since Max was a high schooler, and Roxanne wasn't even present in ''WesternAnimation/AnExtremelyGoofyMovie'' so they could have broken up due to college or even beforehand, and thus it's not abnormal for Max to have dated more than one person. There's even dubiousness about where the movie is even canon to the ''WesternAnimation/GoofTroop''-verse.
* ''Franchise/StarWars''
** ''Film/TheForceAwakens'': Some Rey/Kylo Ren fans demonize Finn, claiming that Finn doesn't actually respect Rey because he lied to her about being a member of the Resistance. In some particularly infamous cases, this dips into outright racism.
** ''Film/TheLastJedi'' takes this up a notch as it turns Rey/Kylo from a CrackPairing into a strong contender for the OfficialCouple. Finn/Rey shippers, needless to say, have not taken kindly to this. They often portray Kylo in fanfiction as a sadistic brat who is EntitledToHaveYou towards Rey, completely ignoring his HiddenDepths. Rose, Finn's canon {{Love Interest|s}}, is either portrayed as a ClingyJealousGirl who wants Finn all to herself or is literally killed off for the sake of Finn getting with Rey and/or Poe. The Rey/Kylo shippers are far from saints as well, as they are extremely threatened by Poe, portraying him as a KnightTemplar who wants to [[RelationshipSabotage kill Kylo and exile Rey]] [[TheEndJustifiesTheMeans "for the good of the Resistance"]].
** ''Film/TheRiseOfSkywalker'' digs itself even deeper shipping-wise, as ''all'' of the romantic pairings were immensely disliked. Rey/Kylo was made official, which pleased none of the people who shipped her with Finn or Poe (or even the people who shipped Finn and Poe together, as they felt Rey getting with one of them was still a better alternative than Kylo). Meanwhile, Finn and Poe both had new female characters to interact with, even though countless fans, as well as the actors themselves, thought the men had much better chemistry with each other than with their not-really-girlfriends, to the point that many suspected those characters ''only'' existed [[HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday to prove Finn and Poe weren't gay]]. Creator/OscarIsaac himself pushed for "[[PortmanteauCoupleName Stormpilot]]," and when that didn't happen, he called Disney cowardly for not wanting to depict a gay romance.
* ''Film/ReAnimator''. One would hope that a character dying tragically at the end of the film would spare her from the rampant character derailment generally associated with this trope. One, sadly, would be wrong. Tip for becoming unreasonably intoxicated in a very short amount of time while reading ''Re-Animator'' fanfiction: Take a sip every time Meg and Dan are referred to as "friends" (in the movie they were engaged and had sex on screen), a swig every time Meg is characterized as bitchy and shallow (in canon she is sweet and supportive of Dan, but immediately finds Herbert creepy which [[SarcasmMode isn't understandable at all]]) or unreasonably jealous of Dan's friendship/blossoming relationship with Herbert (even though in the movie and especially it's sequels, Herbert is the one that acts overtly jealous), drain your glass every time a fanfic writer manages to kill her off in a way even more brutal than her canon death. Do not get in the way of the HoYay, ladies, even if you pay for it with your life the fanfic writers won't let you rest in peace.

* Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse:
** Many Steve/Tony fics depict Bruce as an emotionally abusive coward who's only with Tony because Tony protects him; while many Bruce/Tony fics depict Steve as a self-righteous, bigoted asshole who treats Tony like shit or slut-shames him. And then there's the Loki/Tony ones where Pepper/Steve/Bruce/whoever is bashed so that Tony can run into Loki's arms, or Thor (who is depicted as being in a relationship with Loki, although the two are brothers) being bashed so that Loki can run into the arms of Tony. And then there's the inclusion of Tony's pre-Avengers best friend Rhodey, and how he's often villainized to keep Tony with the Avengers. And ''then'' there's the way some Steve/Tony fans turned on Steve himself after he sided with Bucky over Tony in ''Captain America: Civil War'', bashing him for "betraying" poor innocent Tony.
** Given that Steve Rogers is one half of two of ''the'' most popular ships in the MCU by far, fan favorites Tony Stark and Bucky Barnes have become victims to this trope as well. Stucky fans like to portray Tony as a spoiled, sociopathic bully who thinks he's entitled to Steve just because, and Stony fans present Bucky as an irredeemable psychopath who abuses Steve to a point where it's up to Tony to rescue him. There's a reason why fans joke about ''Civil War'' actually meaning ''Shipping War''.
** Usually averted with Pepper - she's a popular enough character that fanfic writers will usually just [[BetaCouple pair her up with whatever guy]] Tony isn't banging or [[SlashFic Natasha]], which also quite conveniently keeps Natasha out of the way of [[FanPreferredCouple Hawkeye/Coulson]] (in which fics she is almost invariably PlatonicLifePartners or BetterAsFriends with Clint).
** Speaking of the MCU, lots of fangirls tend to do this with Theoric, who in the comics was engaged to Loki's wife Sigyn before Loki pulled a UriahGambit on him. If Theoric shows up in an MCU fanfic, he's almost always an abusive asshole who deserves to get Uriahed, despite the original comic story actually had some of Sigyn's friends complaining he was too noble. This is especially hilarious because the fangirls could always just, you know, not bring him into an MCU story since he's a comics-only character with no basis in mythology.
** Similar to the above, Mockingbird gets this from [[PortmanteauCoupleName Clintasha]] shippers. While she doesn't appear until the second season of ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'', she's been getting hate since ''Avengers'' hit big with shippers. Thanks to Clintasha being the most popular het couple, they have a very defensive fandom, and when many discovered that Hawkeye married someone else in the comics on which the films are based, they took up arms against her. It doesn't help that Natasha and Clint were once romantically together but broke up quickly[[note]]And while together, Natasha didn't love Clint, she was using him as muscle, and when they both had a HeelFaceTurn, she dumped him for Daredevil[[/note]] while Hawkeye and Mockingbird were together for a very long time and both consider the other to be the love of their life [[note]]They were together for a decade in real life, broke up over disagreement concerning Bobbi killing a man ([[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil given what he did to her, he deserved it]]), got back together after a ComicBookDeath, then broke up shortly before ''The Avengers'' film came out thanks to them both realizing that they were dragging each other down a bad spiral[[/note]], meaning that, with Mockingbird joining the film universe, its very likely that Hawkeye and her will become canon. It's made worse as there's a certain level of misogyny at play (Bobbi is often treated as the one responsible for whatever trouble the two face that lead to their breakup, despite the main catalyst for their breakup being the fact she was ''raped'' and Hawkeye didn't understand the full scale of the trauma; not to mention, the fact they devolve both girls into essentially arguing and fighting over a man, which brings a lot of UnfortunateImplications into play), and it ignores the fact that, in the comics, both Natasha and Bobbi are very good friends with a lot of professional respect for one another.
** On the flip side of this, Bucky Barnes, who for a while in recent comics was Widow's long time boyfriend and partner in espionage, gets this from some of these fans too, though to a lesser extent. Generally he's just a BastardBoyfriend or is just a general psychopath, and Clint just needs to protect Widow from him (ignoring the fact that Natasha is ''not'' the type of person likely to be abused, but given how she proved to be a better fighter than Clint when trying to take him down non-lethally, and was able to hold her own against the Winter Soldier in their film, its fairly asinine to think she'd need protecting, or that Clint would be able to do it).
** Sam Wilson/Falcon was introduced in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier'' as Steve's new buddy who helps him save the day, and brought a lot of HoYay with him, to the point Sam fulfilled the usual tasks that a love interest would perform. Given the above examples, its no surprise he was walking into a minefield, and he has ''not'' been spared the same treatment for getting in the way of Avenger HoYay.
** Sharon Carter/Agent 13 gets a lot of hate from all sides despite being a prominent figure in the comics, and Captain America's main love interest. Known for being Captain America's SecondLove, she's not only hated for getting between the HoYay Steve/Bucky and Steve/Tony shipping, but also gets flack from the ardent Steve/Peggy shippers.
** After the release of ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar'', the Tony/Stephen Strange ship rose into popularity, and shippers went after Steve Rogers, painting him as a bitter and jealous ex or as a complete asshole. Most of it stems from many Tony/Stephen Strange shippers being Tony/Steve Rogers shippers who jumped ship after ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar''.
** Aunt May Parker is often killed in fics, so that Peter Parker can be adopted by Tony and Pepper (or Bruce, or Steve). An odd variant since it's killing off someone who gets in the way of a ''platonic'' relationship rather than a romantic one (except of course for the fics where Tony and Peter's relationship ''is'' romantic...).
** For a long time, Peggy Carter avoided this fate as her past relationship with Steve in the first ''Captain America'' movie stood no chance of being reignited in the modern day where she's an old, senile woman and she hence wasn't viewed as a threat by Steve/Tony or Steve/Bucky shippers. Then ''Film/AvengersEndgame'' unexpectedly refloated the Steve/Peggy ship by [[spoiler:having Steve choose to travel back in time to be with her]] and all of a sudden, Peggy wasn't quite so well-liked by Steve/Tony and Steve/Bucky shippers anymore with a lot of fics written where Steve dumps her in favor of returning to the modern day instead and a lot of claims made by bitter Steve/Bucky shippers that she was made into a SatelliteLoveInterest just to "no homo" Steve and Bucky's relationship.

* This somehow managed to happen with ''non-canon'' pairings in ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'' fandom.
** Many Steve/Tony fics depict Bruce as an emotionally abusive coward who's only with Tony because Tony protects him; while many Bruce/Tony fics depict Steve as a self-righteous, bigoted asshole who treats Tony like shit or slut-shames him. And then there's the Loki/Tony ones where Pepper/Steve/Bruce/whoever is bashed so that Tony can run into Loki's arms, or Thor (who is depicted as being in a relationship with Loki, although the two are brothers) being bashed so that Loki can run into the arms of Tony. And then there's the inclusion of Tony's pre-Avengers best friend Rhodey, and how he's often villainized to keep Tony with the Avengers.

* ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon'' has a portion of fans who want to hook Hiccup up with [[EnsembleDarkhorse Ruffnut]] (who's rather similar to Astrid but, unlike her, is not Hiccup's official love interest), Tuffnut (Ruffnut's twin brother), or even Toothless (yes, the dragon). For that, Astrid gets bashed, degraded into a FauxActionGirl, and labeled as shallow for showing interest in Hiccup after finding out about his dragon, even though she was the only teen that did not actively mock/tease Hiccup in the beginning and thus had less of a personality shift than the others would have.

** Before ''Frozen'' came out, Jack was often shipped with Rapunzel from ''WesternAnimation/{{Tangled}}'', so in some fanworks, she gets derailed and/or outright killed to make way for Jack/Elsa ship.

** Shipping [[WesternAnimation/RiseOfTheGuardians Jack Frost]] with Elsa is so popular across many platforms, it's become one of the first cases of a non-canon ''CrossoverShip'' getting this level kind of treatment. It's partly HypeBacklash, from fans who are sick of the overexposure the ship gets from not only fan works but also Cosplay. As a result, [[RonTheDeathEater demonizing Jack]] is standard practice in some parts of the fandom, and quite a few hate fics, art, comics and screenshot manipulations are made solely to kill, mutilate or otherwise humiliate him. A few even outright made him into a monster who will gladly [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil rape]] Elsa without remorse. Even a few notable Professional Disney artists have expressed their dislike of the ship such as Pocket Princesses creator Amy Mebberson [[http://amymebberson.tumblr.com/post/123735554439/pocket-princesses-155-san-diego-comic-con-2015 who made this strip of a very annoyed Elsa having enough of Jack Frost cosplayers hitting on her]] and a subtle hint of her general opinion on forcing Elsa cosplayers to participate against their will to play out a ship based on fandom adoration without their consent.
