He is a protege of the Soviet officer who had Bucky brainwashed in the first place.

For a long time, it was fondly accepted among comic book fans that Bucky was one of the few [[DeathIsCheap comic book characters that actually stayed dead]], along with [[{{Franchise/Batman}} Jason Todd]] and [[{{Franchise/Spider-Man}} Uncle Ben]].
