* SpiritualSuccessor:
** Along with Al Ewing's ''[[ComicBook/NewAvengers2015 New Avengers]]'', this book is a successor to his ''Captain America and the Comicbook/MightyAvengers'' series, including both Blue Marvel and Monica Rambeau. (''New Avengers'', on the other hand, has White Tiger and Power Man from ''Mighty Avengers''.)
** The team is also the successor to/replacement for the Fantastic Four, since after ''Secret Wars'' the team has dissolved, with the Thing and Human Torch joining [[Comicbook/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy other]] [[Comicbook/UncannyAvengers teams]] and Reed, Sue and the FF kids [[spoiler:are busy rebuilding existence]]. The Ultimates have taken up the explorer mantle that defined many F4 adventures.
** Galactus's storyline, about a being trying to change the status quo, and the nature and weight of stories, as well as antagonists trying to force them back into their old role, echoes that of Ewing's ''ComicBook/LokiAgentOfAsgard''.
** Also to Jim Starlin's Infinity saga, as it features bizarre imagery and the cosmic entities as prominent characters.

** Issue 10 (or 100) features the long awaited return of the [[spoiler:original Ultimates]]

** America offhandedly confirms that she knows all about the events of ''Secret War'' too, where everyone else only vaguely remembers, and notes only that it's a "long story".

* FiveManBand:
** In ''The Ultimates'', Carol is TheLeader, T'Challa is TheLancer, Adam is TheSmartGuy, America is TheBigGuy, and Monica is TheChick.
** In ''Squared'', America is explicitly identified as TheLeader, while Carol becomes TheBigGuy. Everybody else remains in their established positions.

* KillEmAll: [[spoiler:Logos' first act of business on forming is to find the last of the Celestials, and murder them all. It misses one. Issue 6 reveals that their murder was an intentional act of spite from the First Firmament.]]

* SuperTeam: A bunch of high end ones appear in this series. The weakest of these are the [[spoiler: original Ultimates]], then there's Troubleshooters who are strong enough to give a decent fight to the Ultimates. Next in strength are the Ultimates (2015). Then we get into the real cosmic level with [[spoiler: the Eternity Watch: who are made of new CosmicEntities Ego-Prime, Galactus the Lifebringer, Psi-hawk and the Infinaut]] and taken UpToEleven with [[spoiler: the Ultimate Ultimates, who are the previous Eternities]].

* CrossThrough: The team shows up in ''ComicBook/ContestOfChampions'', incidentally also written by Ewing.

*** Iso-8 from the new ''ComicBook/ContestOfChampions'' comic is mentioned.

* NotSoDifferent: Galactus' argument to Ego. [[spoiler:They're both formed from the last living members of civilisations buried deep inside a phenomenal cosmic force.]]

* {{Foreshadowing}}: During Voght's monologue at the beginning of issue 5, as he recounts the incident on Mt. Wundagore, he says he and Tensen "never mentioned Emmet". Anyone familiar with the New Universe might recognise the name, and in issue 6, Emmet returns as the Psi-Hawk.

* MayDecemberRomance: Blue Marvel / Spectrum. In universe, he was a super since the Korean war (so he's at least in his seventies), she isn't anchored to any real world event so thanks to ComicbookTime maybe in her thirties. In the meta sense Monica first appeared in the 80s while Adam was retconned into the universe in 2009. No matter how we count this is a couple with a huge age difference.

* BlatantLies: While accusing Galactus in issue 2, Master Order claims he and Chaos were trying to reason with Galactus back during ''Ultimates'' issue 6. He leaves out the part where he outright and Order tried to force Galactus into changing back.

* RealityEnsues: In a sense, at least. [[spoiler:The Maker recreates the Ultimates of his universe to fight their counterparts, but even with the Hulk, absolutely none of them have the raw muscle needed to put a dent in a team of Flying Bricks, and they lose handily.]]

* BigBad:
** [[spoiler:Eternity, from the looks of issue 4, who has created some manner of cage out of existence he doesn't want the Ultimates learning about. The reason being that something outside of the MU has somehow managed to imprison him, meaning the entirety of existence is being held hostage.]]
*** [[spoiler:And then Molecule Man speculated that Eternity may be behind [[ComicBook/StarbrandAndNightmask his Children's plot]] to properly end the current omniverse, and the Chain is in fact the very thing to stop him from acting out his will himself.]]
** [[spoiler:But the actual villain is the one responsible for imprisoning Eternity, an entity called "The Cosmic Jailer", a strange UltimateEvil which is labelled as being responsible for kickstarting the tensions that led to ComicBook/CivilWarII.]]
*** [[spoiler:Issue 5 reveals that the Jailer is a being called The First Firmament, a being that was basically an embodiement of the First Cosmos, in other words an older version of Eternity who seeks to return to his full potential.]]

* TheseusShipParadox: Discussed between Molecule Man and Galactus in issue 6. ''Technically'', the seventh omniverse died at the beginning of ''[[ComicBook/SecretWars2016 Secret Wars]]'', and the current omniverse is now the eighth... but so much has remained the same, is it a new omniverse, or just the old one with a new coat of paint? And does that mean the rules have or can change?

** The sixth incarnation of Eternity is described as the inventor of the "junction to anywhere", which was a phrase coined back in Hickman's Fantastic Four run.
