* DamselInDistress: In the prequel comic to the first game, the last sequence of the comic is Shang Tsung capturing Sonya Blade and some of her Special Forces colleagues. The comic then ends with a "to be continued... in the Arcade game".

Before and after Malibu had a crack at a ''VideoGame/MortalKombat'' comic series, Midway did a few official comics based off of 1, 2, 4 and an unreleased one for Deception as well. The first 2 comics were advertised in their respective games' [[AttractMode Attract Modes]]. There is also a comic that focused on the beginning of ''VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse''.

* Tuckerization: Jax's subordinate in the Special Forces is named after Steve Beran, then an artist at Midway and eventually lead art director at Netherrealm Studios.

* MythologyGag: In the [=MK4=] comic, Sindel punishes Reptile for his services in Shao Kahn's name by sending him to eternal labour in the cobalt mines of Shokan, a location commonly seen in LiveAction/MortalKombatConquest.

* CallBack: Sub-Zero arrives at the Temple of the Elements to find an answer. The same Temple of Elements that [[VideoGames/MortalKombatMythologiesSubZero his elder brother once went to to steal Shinnok's Amulet from and would eventually use to seal Shinnok]].

* ShoutOut: As if Scorpion's parallels to Comicbook/GhostRider couldn't be more obvious enough, the MK1 comic has him grab Sub-Zero by the robe and demand he "look into (his) eyes" in an almost lawyer-baiting imitation of Ghost Rider's Penance Stare. Said splash panel has a huge ''flaming skull in the background.''

* PaperThinDisguise: Quan Chi claiming to be from a realm called "Treche." As in "treachery." To Sindel's credit she does seem skeptical at first (having never heard of such a realm before) up until Quan Chi offers her a pretty orb that completely catches her attention.

They serve to fill in backstory details about the games as best as possible although their canonicity becomes increasingly shaky. Many aspects of the plot get changed around with instances such as Baraka being something of an ally to the heroes of Earth Realm, the Shaolin Order of Light sending in another champion instead of Liu Kang, and Raiden attempting to persuade Kano and Goro to join the heroes. All in all, these comics are usually best enjoyed with loose involvement to the Mortal Kombat universe.

* HypnotizeThePrincess: ''Battlewave'' focuses on Sonya being kidnapped and then hypnotized by Reptile to marry Shao Kahn. In doing this, Kahn would legally own Outworld for himself. [[HilariousInHindsight Curiously enough, it was later revealed that he did this before with Edenia]].
* MagicFromTechnology: In between the events of 3 and 4, it seems Sonya Blade and the rest of the Special Forces were able to use technology to achieve what Shang Tsung and other Outworlders did with magic: Such as opening portals with a nuclear generator. [[{{Blazblue}} Kokonoe would be proud.]]

* OrderVsChaos: The premise of the ''Goro: Prince of Pain'' Comics, where Goro's trapped between the machinations of Order God Abacus and Chaos God Zaggot.

* TwoBeingsOneBody: Comic-exclusive character Siang is made by the fusion of twin Shaolin Monks Sing and Sang. [[spoiler: This does get tampered with when one of the twins dies, forcing them to be merged permanently. When a dead-controlling stone gets introduced, Siang becomes partially under its control because of the merger.]]

They serve to fill in backstory details about the games as best as possible although their canon status is questionable.
