%%* AdaptationalSympathy: In the non-canon Taito remake ''Ys IV: Mask of the Sun -A New Theory-'' he had a backstory where he lost his fahter as a result of a mining accident, playing a role in Gruda's turn to villainy. This was in stark contrast to other versions of the story where he was a straight up villain from start to finish.

A tyrant who centuries ago manipulated both sides of a conflict that broke out between two halves of Celceta's population to keep them distracted while his armies proceed to butcher many on both sides of the conflict so he can rule the country with an iron fist. This ambition came to an end when Lefance engaged his forces in battle and overthrew him.

Eventually, he is revealed as the true master of the Clan of Darkness. Gruda, who was one of his subordinates, resurrects Arem who is fueled with fury over his defeat from centuries ago and is now determined to get revenge on Lefance by instigating the extermination of all life.

** Deconstructed in ''Memories of Celceta''. He starts off believing that Dark Eldeel shares his vision of ruthlessly "testing" humanity, to the point where he willingly relinquishes the Mask of the Sun in the hopes that the Black-winged One will accomplish his goals for him. Once he realizes that Dark Eldeel has a sense of mercy, Gruda states his disappointment and steals the mask in order to bring about the apocalypse himself. Gruda is an example of what this trope leads to when the supporter learns that his boss isn't as psycho as he is.
