The Covey are the family of musicians Lucy Gray Baird comes from. They were originally nomads who travelled around the country to entertain, but by the time of ''The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes'', they are stranded in District 12 due to the Capitol's polices. It's implied that Katniss Everdeen from the main trilogy is related to the Covey on her father's side.

* FantasyCounterpartCulture: The Covey seem to be inspired by the UsefulNotes/{{Romani}}, being a group of itinerants who feel that they don't belong to any single regional border and provide musical entertainment to make a living.
* MeaningfulName: A covey is a group of quails, tying in with Lucy Gray's avian theme.
* MusicalThemeNaming: All members of the Covey are named after real-life ballads and poems. The most prominent, of course, is Lucy Gray (named after the poem by Creator/WilliamWordsworth; this is even pointed out in-universe). * ParentalAbandonment: Katniss felt left alone to provide when her father died because her mother no longer functioned. She improved, but Katniss is still forever wary of her ability to protect her and Prim.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: We only ever see Mrs. Mellark through Katniss' eyes, and she despises Peeta's mother. We have no idea whether or not she does have a softer side as well, or what the real reason for her behavior is. Some speculate that she is constantly worried that she won't be able to feed her three growing sons, and that this is the reason for her strong reaction to Peeta burning two loaves of bread and why she won't give Katniss any food earlier that day (as it would mean taking food from her own children's plates). Some of the things Peeta says suggests that there's a lot Katniss doesn't know about that might influence Mrs. Mellark's actions - for instance he reveals that they often had to eat stale bread that couldn't be sold, which implies that they weren't safe from starvation either. It doesn't excuse her being abusive towards her children, but it suggests that she's far more complex a person than Katniss believes her to be.

The mayor's daughter and Katniss's schoolmate, Madge gives the Mockingjay pin to Katniss. She is later revealed to be the niece of one of Katniss's mother's best friends and Haymitch's District partner Maysilee, who was killed in the second Quarter Quell.

* {{Hypocrite}}: Wants revenge more than anything on the Capitol after it carpet-bombed District 12, screaming at how he was forced to watch the District 12 children burn to death. However, he sees nothing wring in killing Capitol children out of revenge, as he considers them just as guilty as every other Capitol citizen for the atrocities committed against the districts.
