* HeroesWantRedheads: Amos and Alex do, anyway.

* TragicVillain: The Protomolecule is not quite a villain, but Holden feels a degree of pity for the Protomolecule and the Investigator after the latter explains that the Protomolecule is trying to connect with the dead Ring network. The Protomolecule knows that the Ring Builders are gone and that trying to connect is pointless, but it's locked by its programming into trying nonetheless.

* TheSnarkKnight: naturally, as part of his HardboiledDetective persona. He gets even moreso as [[spoiler:a protomolecule puppet in ''Cibola Burn''.]]

* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler:The ''Preiss'' goes dutchman, but then Duarte intervenes and drives off the dark gods]].

* OverprotectiveDad: Especially toward his teenage daughter.

* TheChick: Only female permanent member of the ''Roci'' crew in the first few books, and the most ethically concerned and least violent of them. Love interest to TheHero and, to a much lesser degree, TheLancer.[[note]]Amos at one point says that he would gladly have sex with her if she'd let him, unlike in the TV series where he does whatever she says purely because he respects her moral instincts and technical expertise.[[/note]] Several times put in [[DamselInDistress distress]] by villains using her to take revenge on Holden or to control him - though at least she gets herself out of it sometimes or gets rescued by another woman instead of her boyfriend.

* HotScientist

* AmbiguousDisorder: Amos seems to be neuro-atypical, though exactly how is never made explicit. Other characters note that he lacks a strong moral center, and tends to attach himself to other people who are regarded as having strong moral judgement. The first person scenes of him suggest he has [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexithymia alexithymia]] as the only emotion in himself he can easily identify is anger, with most others he can only identify after the fact by his physical reactions to them.[[note]](For example, he thinks the feeling of a lump in his throat and hollowness in his chest must mean he is getting sick, and it takes him some time to realize that feeling is the result of grief.)[[/note]]

* IllGirl: Becomes this later on in life, due to side-effects of her BioAugmentation. The implanted glands are leaking, and slowly poisoning and killing her.

* IllGirl: She suffers from a chronic condition that leaves her immune system particularly weak. Fortunately it is treatable, so long as she gets regular medication. [[spoiler:This condition is why she was taken.]]

* NiceHat: Can't be a HardboiledDetective without one. Holden doesn't actually like the hat.

** Well, it's arguable if it's really an "irrational" fear - the others are less afraid, but then, nobody else but Holden saw the results of the Eros infection of the Protomolecule up close and survived. (Except Miller, who didn't survive for long, and also developed severe mental problems as a result.) Though it certainly has aspects of PTSD for Holden.

* BastardGirlfriend: She almost exclusively sleeps with men who are ''well'' below her in rank, and does with precisely because she's in a position to dominate them ''outside'' the bedroom. She does so partly because it gives her a sense of power and control that covers her own insecurities, but also because the fact that if she were ''caught'' doing so it would be punishing for ''her'', and sitting on the secret of it is something she finds gratifying. She's self-aware that some of the appeal of Laconian service in her mind is that it fed her kinks.

* AdultFear: [[spoiler:Having to comfort his newborn son as they both get dutchmanned. While Kit and his family survive, Kit then has to deal with his son having seizures from Duarte's attempts to absorb him into his hive mind.]]

* BaldHeadOfToughness: His baldness is frequently remarked upon by people who aren't members of the crew. If he has not had the opportunity to shave for a few days, members of the crew will sometimes notice his stubble. His hair [[PrematurelyBald started thinning early]], so he shaves what remains.
