The {{Deuteragonist}} of the series, Yoshika is a poet who admires hermits and wants to become one herself. She met Kasen during the latter's search for her arm and mistook her for a hermit. Kasen decided to play along, but their friendship changed her ways and both promised to meet again as hermits. [[DoomedByCanon It's not going to go well, as she's a jiang shi in the present day]].

Seiga Kaku is a Taoist hermit with a magic chisel that lets her create holes in walls and controls a group of jiang shi servants. As Seiga is an acquaintance of the Great Hermit, Yoshika begs help from Seiga to make herself a hermit too. [[FauxAffablyEvil Friendly and affable on the outside, Seiga is very twisted and evil on the inside]], as Yoshika is going to find out the hard way.

* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: The canon Kasen has a very ill-defined and vague backstory but this series expands greatly on her past and gives her more things to angst over like ParentalAbandonment and LossOfIdentity. Notably, she goes through enough emotional pain over the course of the story that she cries onscreen when she has yet to cry in an official work.

* BystanderSyndrome: Played for laughs in the final episode, where [[spoiler:she stood by and watched Kasen and Suika fought, and the latter calls her out for it]].

Seiga's friendliness is [[FauxAffablyEvil a lot less genuine]] than in canon and she is a lot more callous, shown best by [[spoiler:how she takes advantage of not yet being under [[NonLethalWarfare the Spell Card System]] to kill Yoshika herself]]. However, she is given some extra humanization [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes in the form of her relationship with Kan Kaku]].

* EarlyBirdCameo: She's the hooded women who sold Yoshika the hermit training and barrier books, it's just impossible to recognize her until the end of the second episode when she takes off her hood.

* EvilHasABadSenseOfHumor: Apparently, food containing puppets of dead human body parts and a HumansAreBastards speech qualifies as a prank. Also, she finds [[spoiler:Yoshika dying of poison and wanting desperately to reunite with a friend]] to be funny.

Suika's group of oni bandits were feared among humans because they kidnapped people. After being weakened with poisoned sake by humans, they were forced to go into hiding.

* TheBeastmaster: Her power is to guide animals, which she puts to use by calling a giant eagle during her failed attempt to escape Yoshika. Various animals join in during the GoodTimesMontage because of her power.

* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Despite being the leader of the oni bandits, she seems to be the unfavorite among its higher-ups. After the bandits are defeated, Yuugi gets fed up with Suika's brattiness and tells her to stop with her tantrum, and Kasen reacts with great disgust when she meets Suika again in Gensokyo.

* ParentalAbandonment: [[spoiler:Turns out that Suika was an abandoned child too and her original name was Sute Douji (Throw-away Kid).]]

* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: Not really sure where the "conditioning" comes from, but she's pretty unfazed by Seiga having reanimated corpses as servants and she gets over the initial shock of [[ImAHumanitarian Seiga's food]] very quickly. Seiga even takes more interest in Yoshika at seeing how unfazed she is by the latter.

* ObliviousGuiltSlinging: Kasen attempts to kill Yoshika after gathering all of the information she needs to pass the Rajoumon barrier, but stops moments before dealing the killing blow because Yoshika tells her that meeting her was a wonderful experience and that [[MortalityPhobia she keeps thinking about and fearing the day of her death whenever they are apart]]. She then has a HeelRealization and a change of plans.

She lives in a world where mythical creatures are very much real and witnesses dragons and people who can create holes in walls by tapping them once with a chisel, but she only seems to believe supernatural elements that she thinks are related to hermits (and even then, she admits that she considers hermits to be "fairy-tales" and only is willing to believe in them because it's her only option [[MortalityPhobia to avoid death]]). Yoshika apparently thought that Kasen being an oni was a joke, but she still sympathized with Kasen.

* FauxAffablyEvil: Acts playful and friendly, but is very twisted deep down with [[HumansAreBastards a hatred for humans]] and she is [[spoiler:the only character to kill someone onscreen]].

The main protagonist of the series and its source manga ''Manga/TouhouIbarakasenWildAndHornedHermit''. Kasen Ibaraki (also known as Ibaraki Douji) is an {{Oni}} who served as the former vice leader of the oni bandits until she had to into hiding disguised as a human. Kaen has the power to guide animals. She was [[ParentalAbandonment abandoned by her mother years ago]] and became an oni when Suika found her and offered her the Ibaraki Box of a Hundred Medicines to heal her wounds and grant immortality to get another chance to reunite with her parent. After that, she grew up alongside Suika's group of oni bandits until they lost a rough battle and had to go into hiding. Kasen [[AnArmAndALeg had her arm cut off during the fight]], and her search to find it again led her to meet Yoshika, whose interest in hermits gave Kasen an idea for how to get assistance. However, after this fateful meeting, [[BecomingTheMask Kasen's act about becoming a hermit wouldn't stay fake for long]]...

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The series displays in the first episode that Kasen isn't ''quite'' the [[RedOniBlueOni blue oni to Suika and Yuugi's red oni]] yet by having her break up the fight between the two of them, but once they tell her that it's just a friendly rock paper scissors match (yes, [[MundaneMadeAwesome the fistfight in which they destroy the surrounding area is rock paper scissors]]), [[NotSoAboveItAll she happily approves and watches the fight]]. Her first scene after the TimeSkip to her adulthood has a short period of her thinking back to past events with EmptyEyes to display that she's grown out of her energetic CheerfulChild self and then indulge and join in on a poem Yoshika is making to show that her more peaceful side has taken over. Still, Kasen is shown to not yet be quite like her present-day self as she immediately tries to run away once Yoshika asks for assistance compared to [[CompassionateCritic how she usually is]].
