** TemporaryBulkChange: In the third game, activating his SuperMode buffs him up considerably, whilst in the remake, putting on the Terror Mask turned him from a shrimpy HollywoodNerd into an Adonis.

* HollywoodNerd: Pre-transformation, Rick fits squarely into this. Bonus points for [[VocalDissonance keeping that dweeby-voice afterwards]].

* BaldOfAwesome: He loses his hair when he has the Mask on. In the remake, he retains it.

** SuperMode: Called Mutant Rick in the third game, where it causes the Terror Mask to visibly fuse to his skin, bulks him up, and gives him clawed fingers. In the remake, it's called Berserk Mode and gives him access to more powerful attacks whilst covering him in bone-based SpikesOfEvil.

* MsFanservice: In the remake, especially considering that the player can collect photos of her being topless.

Lets be honest, given the threats that they pose to the world, and the fact that Rick is a NiceGuy and that they BOTH have understandable (justified in Rick's case) reasons to be against both Dr. West and The Corrupted, things would have probably gone MUCH more smoothly for both if the Mask just came clean about it's plan to Rick right from the get-go.

* EvilAllAlong: [[spoiler:PLayed straight in the original series. Although it isn't as bad as in the remake, cut dialogue for the final boss fight actually had it reveal itself to be allied with the Corrupted. * NotSoDifferent: During one of their final confrontations, West notes that he and Rick share "the same interests, the same purpose... the same woman."

An ancient Aztec/Mayan artifact of great power, which turns the user into a powerful warrior. The mask provides Rick the strength needed to complete his quest, but is quite sinister on his own [[spoiler:and eventually tries to kill Rick and TakeOverTheWorld, but is destroyed]]. In the Remake the mask has a new personality, [[spoiler:and wants to get revenge on the Corrupted for what [[KickTheDog they did]] [[MadeASlave to it]]]].

* BloodKnight: More exemplified in the remake as well as [[JustifiedTrope justified]], since it runs off ThePowerOfBlood.

* DerivativeDifferentiation: It originally looked like [[Franchise/FridayThe13th Jason Voorhees]]' iconic hockey mask (to the point the mask was made red in censored rereleases of the first game), but became more skull-like in ''2''. ''3'' brought back some of the hockey mask traits (the indentations around the mouth) and the general appearance of that incarnation carried over into the reboot (albeit made of bone).

* ArtifactOfDoom: A sentient Aztec mask that gives its wearer immense strength and LovecraftianSuperpower and in the original games [[spoiler:was EvilAllAlong]]. Though this is [[spoiler:played with in the remake, as it turns out that the Mask was a benign protector of the Aztecs until the Corruption came along.]]

* FateWorseThanDeath: It views [[spoiler:itself being enslaved by the Corruption for eternity]] as this.

* MadeASlave: [[spoiler:The reason why it knows of the Corruption so much.]]

** In the remake, why was it that it needed Rick? [[spoiler:It wanted Rick to bring the Corruption to Earth so the Mask could kill it personally. It had Rick kill ten thousand monsters over the course of his adventure to open the gates of Hell with their souls, so the Corruption would be already weakened by being made out of already injured corpses. Unfortunately, the Terror Mask did not foresee the Corruption possessing Jennifer.]]

* NobleDemon: In the remake, the Mask is still an ArtifactOfDoom that loves to see things suffer. [[spoiler:Then it is revealed that the reason why it is helping Rick, that while still selfish, is rather noble. It is using Rick as part of his RoaringRampageOfRevenge against the Corruption for two reasons. One, for the Corruption [[FateWorseThanDeath enslaving it for eternity]]. And the second, for killing the Aztec tribe that it was benevolently protecting.]]

* StartXToStopX: Its means of destroying the Corruption? [[spoiler:To give it enough sacrifices for it to form on earth, with the battered bodies of enemies that Rick killed to weaken it.]]

* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: A clear example of this. Yes, you lost your wife West, but that does NOT constitute the countless immoral and horrific experiments, murders and abductions you have committed over the years just to ''TRY'' and bring Lenora back. To be perfectly honest, had she (Lenora) managed to be truly resurrected, given her more gentle and benevolent beliefs and world-views, she would have been APPALLED at what her deranged husband has done, and would have likely abandoned him!

* CelebrityResemblance: In the remake, he looks kinda [[WebVideo/TheHappyVideoGameNerd similar to one of the series' fans]].
** InkSuitActor: His appearance is actually based off of one of the original composers, Howard Drossin.

* TheBerserker: He has no qualms in killing things that get in his way (which is understandable, given that, well, you know, THEY attacked first) and it really shows in the remake where he is killing left and right and his body repeatedly becomes heavily mutilated with his muscles being torn and his bones and innards being exposed, but he really doesn't seem to mind because he is hellbent on saving his fiance. This is really shown when he transforms into [[SuperMode Berserk Mode]] (although the ladder instance is actually the Terror Mask taking over briefly).

* YourCheatingHeart: Something that the Terror Mask picks up on. Rick once slept with a different girl behind Jennifer's back. He admits to it being a stupid choice and considers it MyGreatestFailure; and he promised that he would never hurt her again.

* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: A unique instance where one person invokes all three! Her photos that she leaves behind show that she enjoys coloring her hair frequently!

* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: A clear example of this. Yes, you lost your wife West, but that does NOT constitute the countless immoral and horrific experiments, murders and abductions you have committed over the years just to ''TRY'' and bring Lenora back. * TragicVillain: A LoveMakesYouEvil example. All he wants is his wife Lenora to come back to him, and her death [[spoiler:[[NiceJobBreakingItHero is entirely your fault]] on top of that]].

* TheBerserker: He has no qualms in killing things that get in his way (which is understandable, given that, well, you know, THEY attacked first) and it really shows in the remake where he is killing left and right and his body looks really mutilated and his muscles being torn, but he really doesn't seem to care because he is hellbent on saving his fiance. * DarkIsNotEvil: [[spoiler: Subverted in the original trilogy, where the Mask reveals itself to have been EvilAllAlong, but played straight in the remake, where, despite being an ArtifactOfDoom that transforms Rick into a monstrosity, and a lust for blood and violence, its intentions are actually wholesome, arguably even more-so than Rick's.]]

* EvilAllAlong: [[spoiler:In the original series. Although it isn't evil in the remake, cut dialogue for the final boss fight has it reveal itself to be allied with the Corrupted. When Rick refuses its WeCanRuleTogether offer and kills the monster, the Mask begins to speak of its other plans...]]

* {{Jerkass}}: In the remake, it has a habit of being as annoying as possible to Rick whenever it speaks. Many of its jokes are at his expense, and he mocks Rick for his cowardice and wimpy demeanor. At one point, it starts to mock Jen's cries for help, just to piss Rick off.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: However, it never falls back on its promises and is still perfectly willing to help Rick save his girlfriend, even if it taunts him about it along the way. When Rick doubts the Mask, the Mask assures him that if a NiceGuy like Rick can do some pretty bad things, then the opposite can be true with itself.

* LightIsNotGood: [[spoiler:Henry West]] attributes his voice to one of "an angel" to encourage him on his journey. A cut subplot from the game also has the man who found the Terror Mask, Francisco Miguel Cortez, say that he could see "the faces of angels" beneath the surface of the sarcophagus he found it in. He also [[AGodAmI explicitly compares himself]] to God when he first meets Rick.

* NotSoDifferent: The Terror Maask tries to invoke this frequently, telling Rick that he loves killing the demons as much as it does.

* DamselOutOfDistress: Attempted and subverted in the remake. When given the chance, she quickly grabs a dagger and stabs Dr. West in the head with it. Normally, this would kill someone, [[HumanoidAbomination except West is no longer human]].

* TheBadGuyWins: [[spoiler:In the remake, he succeeds in the ritual as one of the souls present possesses Jennifer.]]
* BeenThereShapedHistory: In one of the journal entries, it was implied that he was none other than UsefulNotes/JackTheRipper.
* BigBad: In the remake, and some translations of the trilogy's story.

* TheBerserker: He has no qualms in killing things that get in his way and really shows in the remake where he is killing left and right and his body looks really mutilated and his muscles being torn but he really doesn t seem to care because he is hell bent on saving his fiance. * VampiricDraining: In the remake, it can telepathically drain blood from enemies to heal its host body.
