* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: [[spoiler: His whole plan based on turning Mika, who he considers to be Sika Madu's son Mikaela, into a demon and sacrifice him in order to bring everyone back to life, but this plan was doomed from the beginning. For starters, there was no way that Yuu would ever allow this, and Guren's past actions ensured that Yuu would have the power of two demons on his side (Mika and Asuramaru), which makes him stronger than the rest of the squad combined besides Krul Tepes. And then it's revealed that Mika isn't Mikaela to begin with,[[MistakenIdentity''Yuu is'']], meaing that he not only turned Mika into a demon for nothing, but was even going to kill the wrong person. And while he might have convinced the rest to sacrifice Mika, chances of them agreeing to sacrifice Yuu are low, [[{{Yandere}} Shinoa most of all.]]

* HurtingHero: Yuu was almost killed by his own parents, kept as livestock by vampires, had to watch the orphans he considered family get murdered, and was separated from his most important person Mika for years while believing him dead. * LackOfEmpathy: She showed subtle signs from early on, like when she openly mocks Yuu about his trauma with the brutal murder of his fellow orphans. After [[spoiler:Yuu rejects her feelings and leaves her team]], Shinoa starts displaying this in full force when she coldly states that she doesn't give a shit about [[spoiler:Yuu devouring Asuramaru]], right in front of [[spoiler:Krul who just lost her brother because of it]], as all she cares about is getting Yuu back at her side, whether he wants it or not. She the proceeds to send the order to burn all the food supplies in Ikebukuro settlements, just to prevent Yuu from getting them, with absolutely no consideration of the civilians she's leaving to starve.

* SourOutsideSadInside: His abrasive attitude and lone wolf-like persona act like a shield so that others would leave him alone, and so that he can avoid the pain of losing someone dear to him again. He eventually stops pushing people away thanks to finding new friends.

* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: Besides being the leader of her squad, Shinoa has had her Cursed Gear from before the start of the main series, unlike her teammates who got theirs in early chapters. Her demon also happens to be the strongest there is [[spoiler:due to being the First Progenitor]].

* LovingAShadow: She's attracted to Yuu and believes herself to be in love with him, but compared to Mika who also loves him, she doesn't know just how much of an utterly broken and mentally disturbed individual Yuu is behind his [[StepfordSmiler cheery and optimistic facade]]. [[spoiler:She starts to realize Yuu isn't the person who she thought he was when he attacks and abandons the squad out of his own volition, even though he had constantly called them his family and protected them until that point, all because they try to force him into allowing Guren to sacrifice Mika. However, Shinoa doesn't care anymore if Yuu is sane or not as long as she can kill Mika and steal Yuu away from him.]]

* WentCrazyWhenTheyLeft: In Chapter 118, [[spoiler:Yuu rejects Shinoa's feelings and abandons the squad to run away with Mika, even ignoring Shinoa as she begs him to not leave her because she can't bear to live without him. Next time we see her, Shinoa has become so unstable that she declares she's going to force Yuu to come back to her, even if she has to [[MurderTheHypotenuse kill Mika]] to make that happen.]]

* ApatheticStudent: Early in the series, Yuu gets suspended from military duty and forced to go to school so he can adjust himself to human society a little. He hates this because all he wants is joining the Vampire Extermination Unit to avenge Mika, so much so that he's ''thrilled'' when the teacher threatens to suspend him from school too.

* ArtificialHuman: [[spoiler:Yuu is a homunculus Sika Madu created as a companion for his son Mikaela. He originally was a mere eyeball until he was given a human body.]]

* GoneHorriblyRight: [[spoiler:Originally, Shikama planned to make Shinoa give into her attraction to Yuu so he could finally exploit her desires and force her to submit her to his control. However, Shinoa's desires for Yuu turn out to be ''too'' strong and these end up making Shinoa able to overcome Shikama's influence completely, which derails his plans. Shikama then decides to leave Shinoa's body because he has realized she's as much of a dangerous {{Yandere}} as her sister.]]

* UnbrokenVigil: When Yuu is resting on a hospital bed, Yoichi tends to look after him and fall asleep at his bedside.

After he discovers Mika is alive, Yuu becomes notably more idealistic and cheerful.

* SmarterThanYouLook: Everyone thinks Yuu is an IdiotHero because of his simplicity, lack of proper education, and hotheadedness. Despite that, he can prove himself to be unexpectedly clever and sharp when the situation calls for it. For example, he's the first to figure out [[spoiler:his separation of Mika followed by his first meeting with Guren were arranged as part of a bigger plan]].

* TimeAbyss: [[spoiler:Once the past is fully revealed, Yuu turns out to be older than ''the entire human race''. The First created him during the Age of Dinosaurs.]]

* FriendlessBackground: Guren has stated that before she met her current squad, she never truly cared about anyone.

* HumanDemonHybrid: She was conceived through artificial insemination by using Tenri Hīragi's sperm that was imbued with a curse and placed in demon-possessed woman. This should have lead to her becoming a Namanari, but Mahiru devoured the demon sealed inside Shinoa before that could happen.

* MaternalDeathBlameTheChild: Her mother died when she gave birth to her, due to her mind breaking due to the curse that was inseminated in Shinoa's embryo. Even since she was little, Shinoa thought her mother's death must have been her fault. Since the scientists couldn't make more artificially inseminated Namanari after Shinoa's mother died, she blamed part of the cold treatment she got on that.

* SlipknotPonytail: In the anime, Shinoa's hair ribbon and braids get undone when Yuu goes into a rampage when he becomes possessed by the seraph inside him.

* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: If Yuu is in danger, Shinoa will step out to defend him. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, Shikama exploits by invading Yuu's mind and attacking him so Shinoa comes to protect Yuu. This gives Shikama the perfect opportunity to finally take control over Shinoa's body completely.]]

** He admonishes Yuu for [[spoiler:choosing to keep trying to resurrect Mika instead of allowing Mika to become the sacrifice that'll resurrect the humans who died in the past eight years]]. Again, Guren has no right to judge Yuu when [[spoiler:he was responsible for causing the virus that killed nearly all of humanity, all because he wanted to resurrect his dead friends for only ten years and he decided his own loved ones were more important than the lives of everyone else in the world.]]

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's cold and rude to even those who are friendly with him, but he won't hesitate to save their lives when they're in danger. This is the reason why his friends stick with him no matter what.

* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: In chapter 47, it's revealed that he's partly responsible for [[spoiler:the apocalypse that killed 90% of the human population. His forbidden act of using the Seraph of the End power to resurrect his dead friends caused humanity to receive divine punishment from the Heaven.]]

* WouldHurtAChild: [[spoiler:He kills Kimizuki's kid sister in cold blood and keeps her body as leverage, all in order to force Kimizuki to agree with his plan to resurrect the dead.]]

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's unfriendly, abrasive and bad-tempered, but a very good person deep down. His attitude improves a lot after he makes new friends.

* TookALevelInKindness: After dropping the IneffectualLoner shtick, he's a much friendlier person, especially after learning that Mika is still alive in the battle in Shinjuku.

* AmbiguouslyBi: Although she has a crush on Yu, she hides it from him and flirts with Mitsuba way more often.

* HalfHumanHybrid: She was born as a part-demon because she was inseminated with Shikama Dōji's cells when she was just an embryo.

* HopelessSuitor: [[spoiler:Shinoa is heartbroken when Yuu doesn't hesitate to reject her feelings and ditches her because he's too obsessed with Mika to even consider moving on and starting a new relationship with someone else.]]

* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: He's a lieutenant colonel and is always kicking someone's ass.

* BrokenPedestal: Yuu is grateful to Guren for taking him in after he lost his adoptive family, training him to fight vampires, and introducing him to the Shinoa Squad so he could gain a new family to protect. However, their relationship turns sour after [[spoiler:Guren orchestrates Mika's transformation into a demon and reveals that his master plan is to sacrifice Mika along the entire vampire race so he can resurrect the 90% of humanity that he killed when he resurrected his own friends. Against Guren's expectations, Yuu makes clear he will ''not'' allow Mika to be sacrificed and becomes Guren's main obstacle for his plan to succeed, and Yuu openly declares he'll try and kill Guren if he keeps trying to take Mika from him.]]

His traumatic childhood left him unable to love himself, so he puts on a cheerful and optimistic facade to make his friends laugh so they'll love him and want him to stay around. However, the moment someone tries to take Mika from him, he'll drop the act and reveal his true nature as a ruthless demon.

* FriendlessBackground: Guren has stated that before she met her current squad, she never truly cared about anyone. [[spoiler: Considering how demons work in this setting, her aloofness towards others may have been a good thing.]]

* TheLancer: She acts as Yuu's most direct {{foil}} and is the one who most often back him up in battle. After Mika joins the team, he shares this role with her [[spoiler:until he fully replaces her once Yuu chooses to abandon the squad and only cooperate with Mika.]]

* EyeColourChange: In Chapter 36, he drinks Yuu's blood and completes his transformation into a true vampire, thus turning his eye color from sky blue to red. [[spoiler:After becoming a demon, Mika's eyes change back into blue.]]

* MyGreatestFailure: He has never forgiven himself for walking right into Ferid's trap when he came up with an escape plan, seeing his mistake as the reason why most of the Hyakuya orphans were killed. Fortunately, Yuu convinces him that the best way to correct his mistake is to come up with a plan to save the entire world witn no need for sacrifices.]]

* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: A variation. [[spoiler: When Mika interrogates Aihara Aiko about Yuu's whereabouts, she doesn't reveal it, saying that she won't betray her comrades. However, after he gets pissed off at that and shouts at her that they are not [[AffectionateNickname "Yuu-chan"]]'s comrades, she gets surprised, then proceeds to give his partners red herrings, but him the true location of Yuu. When he asks her why, she replies that she might be able to trust a guy who call Yuu "Yuu-''chan''".]]

* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Shinya's life was empty and miserable ever since his parents sold him as a potential fiancé for Mahiru. He only lived with the goal of surviving each day by doing what the Hīragi family wanted of him, until he met Guren who became the only person who made him feel true joy.

* TheBait: In Chapter 74, Shikama Dōji invades Yuu's heart so that Shinoa will come to rescue Yuu, finally creating an opening in Shinoa's heart that gives Shikama Dōji the chance to possess her body.]]

* NiceGuy: Easily the nicest character in the series.

* TakingTheBullet: When Yuu's [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Seraph form]] first manifests, Mika uses his own body as a shield to stop Yuu from stabbing Shinoa in his rampage. Mika doesn't care about Shinoa or humans at all, but he still doesn't want to see Yuu killing a human.

* UnkemptBeauty: He has MessyHair that does nothing to detract from his {{Bishonen}} looks.

* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Both of his sclera are dark after awakening as a seraph.

* IdiotHero: He's not that smart. For example, as we learn a fair way into the story, he never realized that all vampires used to be human once. He's completely shocked to learn this and even more so that everyone else knew. Justified in that he did not receive a proper education for most of his childhood and had spent most of his childhood traumatized.

Guren sure is quite similar to ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'''s Roy Mustang.

* {{Hypocrite}}: He accuses Krul of betraying her kind and later later [[spoiler: admonishes Yuu for choosing Mika over his squadron.]] Guren is, perhaps, the last person in the entire plot to have the right to criticize anyone for their lack of loyalty, considering that [[spoiler: he was responsible for causing the virus that killed nearly all of humanity, both he and Mahiru constantly manipulated, used and backstabbed others throughout the story]].

* BrokenBird: A male example. The massacre of his family and being separated from Yuu only to spend 4 years living with the vampires he hates (not to mention becoming one) has done a number on him. He hates both humans and vampires, and has become TheStoic to cope with his trauma. He [[IAmAMonster sees himself as nothing more than a monster,]] holds little to no value in his life, but fights on to find Yuu again.

* PlatonicCoParenting: For four years, Mika raised the younger Hyakuya orphans, with Yuu helping him since they were the oldest of the children. In [[spoiler:his own [[LotusEaterMachine ideal illusionary world]]]], Mika sees himself as the "mom" and Yuu as the "dad" of the Hyakuya orphans.

* SurvivorGuilt: Most of the Hyakuya orphans died because of Mika's failed escape plan, with only Yuu managing to get away and Mika surviving because of Krul forcibly transforming him into a vampire. Ever since then, Mika finds living to be nothing but painful [[spoiler:and wouldn't mind to stay as an incorporeal demon if the orphans can be brought back to life]].
