* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Yuu has a somewhat confusing set of ethical guidelines and it's generally hard to figure out how his train of thought works. He'll do anything to protect the people he considers family, but as his teammates point out, Yuu seems to call ''anyone'' family even when he has lots of reasons to distrust them and think of them as bad people. For example, despite initially wanting to kill all vampires, Yuu is grateful to the vampire queen Krul for keeping Mika alive and he continues to call Guren "family", despite Guren manipulating him and betraying him repeatedly. However, when [[spoiler:his demon Asuramaru]], who he had called a friend until that point, betrays his trust and tries to kidnap Mika, Yuu immediately calls him an enemy [[spoiler:and ends up devouring him]]. Later on, despite him risking his life multiple times to protect the Shinoa Squad and Guren, [[spoiler:Yuu cuts ties with them and turns himself into their main enemy because they tried to force him into sacrificing Mika to resurrect the dead]]. He also doesn't have qualms with endangering civilians' lives if it helps him achieve his own goals, and while he does intend to bring them back to life if he can find a way to do it, he doesn't seem to really care if he fails as long as he gets to be together with Mika to the end.

* IdiotHair: Same like Yuu, Mika also has one or two hair that stick out on top of his messy hair. Despite of that, he is TheGenius one compare to Yuu's literally TheFool one.

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: After chapter 77, [[spoiler:he completely disappears from the manga from around the Shibuya arc, enough making the readers wonder about his fate and existence furthermore after being separated from Shinoa's Squad.]].

* AllLovingHero: Yuu learns the everyone he knows, both enemies and allies, have been trapped in a ViciousCycle for ages. Yuu then makes it his main goal to reach a solution where everyone can get a happy ending and no one has to be sacrificed or punished by God.

* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: As she grew up, Shinoa was always in the shadow of her older sister Mahiru who was so talented that Shinoa was frequently reminded that she would never measure up to her as a Hīragi. In the present, she starts to feel in a similar position in regards to Mika because Yuu always looks at him first and prioritizes him as his reason to live, [[spoiler:which eventually culminates in Shinoa deciding she has to kill Mika so that Yuu will finally look at her]].

* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: In Chapter 118, [[spoiler:Shinoa finally confesses her feelings to Yuu while sobbing, in a desperate attempt to make him stay with her. Despite having heard her confession, Yuu still rejects her and runs away to protect Mika from Guren.]]

* DePower: In Chapter 108, [[spoiler:Shinoa's demon Shikama Dōji/Sika Madu lets himself be captured by Saitō and Urd, finally leaving Shinoa's body. As a result, Shinoa loses her Cursed Gear and is left unable to fight except for a use of some low-level charms.]]

* EntitledToHaveYou: Since she has helped Yuu protect and be with Mika, Shinoa appears to feel entitled to his gratitude and affection in return. At one point, she even feels tempted to hear Shikama Dōji when he offers information that could make Mika into a human again, all so Yuu will owe her some love for it. [[spoiler:Eventually, Shinoa realizes that everything she did to make Yuu love her was for naught because he still prefers to be with Mika over her and easily rejects her feelings in favor of Mika. [[spoiler:After Yuu rejects her feelings and leaves the squad to run away with Mika, Shinoa believes she has lost her reason to be alive, and decides to do anything to get Yuu back on her team, even being willing to kill Mika to accomplish that.]]

* GoneHorriblyRight: [[spoiler:Originally, Shikama planned to make Shinoa give into her attraction to Yuu so he could finally exploit her desires and force her to submit to his control. However, Shinoa's desires for Yuu turn out to be ''too'' strong and these end up making Shinoa able to overcome Shikama's influence completely, which derails his plans. Shikama then decides to leave Shinoa's body because he has realized she's as much of a dangerous {{Yandere}} as her sister.]]

* HopelessSuitor: She has a big crush on Yuu, but he sees her as a friend and nothing more, even after Shikama Dōji tells him about Shinoa's feelings for him. Shinoa becomes painfully aware that she doesn't have a chance with Yuu when [[spoiler:he doesn't hesitate to reject her feelings and ditches her to run away with Mika]]. Rather than moving on, Shinoa becomes obsessed with forcing Yuu to return her feelings, even being willing to kill Mika for that goal.

* IJustWantToBeLoved: She wasn't loved by her parents and everyone favoured her sister Mahiru over her. She tried to not care about emotional connection, but deep down, she always yearned to be loved by someone. After Yuu asks for her help to save Mika from the vampires, Shinoa feels like Yuu needs her and makes it her entire purpose to be of use to him so that he'll value her and hopefully, love her. [[spoiler:Ultimately, however, Yuu ditches the entire squad without a second thought because they all side with Guren's plan to sacrifice Mika to revive the dead and Shinoa's desperate plead for Yuu to stay with her does nothing to change his resolve. Realizing that Yuu has rejected her and doesn't need her after all, but does need and love Mika, Shinoa becomes so obsessed with getting Yuu to notice her that she intends to kill Mika for it to happen.]]

* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: After [[spoiler:Yuu rejects her affections and abandons her]], Shinoa starts to go off the deep end. For starters, she declares she's willing to kill Mika to force Yuu to come back to her and then, attempts to ruin Yuu and Mika's plan to steal food by sending the order to burn all the food supplies in Ikebukuro settlements, effectively dooming the civilians to starve to death.
* LackOfEmpathy: She showed signs from early on, like when she openly mocks Yuu about his trauma with the brutal murder of his fellow orphans. After [[spoiler:Yuu rejects her feelings and leaves her team]], Shinoa starts displaying this in full force when she coldly states that she doesn't give a shit about [[spoiler:Yuu devouring Asuramaru]], right in front of [[spoiler:Krul who just lost her brother because of it]], as all she cares about is getting Yuu back at her side, whether he wants it or not. She then proceeds to send the order to burn all the food supplies in Ikebukuro settlements, just to prevent Yuu from getting them, with absolutely no consideration of the civilians she's leaving to starve.

* LoveHungry: After [[spoiler:Yuu rejects her feelings]], Shinoa becomes obsessed with forcing Yuu to be with her. She doesn't care that [[spoiler:leaving the squad]] is something Yuu is doing out of his own free will and she'll do anything to make him come back to her, even being determined to use brutal force to subdue Yuu and attempt to murder Mika because Yuu keeps prioritizing him over everyone else.
* LoveIsAWeakness: The only reason why Shinoa isn't affected by the desire demons feed on and [[spoiler:hasn't been taken over by her inner demon]] is her lack of emotional attachment to anyone. Now that she's allowing herself to care for her new friends and more importantly, falling in love with Yuu, the wall in her heart is growing weaker and she's becoming more vulnerable to a demon's corruption. [[spoiler:Ultimately, it is her love for Yuu what gives Shikama the perfect chance to possess her.]]
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Mahiru says that Shinoa falling in love will trigger her corruption. She seems to be proven right when Shinoa's feelings for Yuu turn so desperate and obsessive that she'll do anything to keep him to herself, including ordering her team to burn civilians' food supplies and trying to kill Yuu's object of devotion, Mika.
* LovingAShadow: She's attracted to Yuu and believes herself to be in love with him, but compared to Mika who also loves him, she doesn't know just how much of an utterly broken and mentally disturbed individual Yuu is behind his [[StepfordSmiler cheery and optimistic facade]]. [[spoiler:She starts to realize Yuu isn't the person who she thought he was when he attacks and abandons the squad out of his own volition, even though he had constantly called them his family and protected them until that point, all because they try to force him into allowing Guren to sacrifice Mika. However, Shinoa doesn't care anymore whether Yuu is sane or not as long as she can kill Mika and steal Yuu away from him.]]

* NotGoodWithRejection: [[spoiler:After she finally confesses her feelings, Yuu immediately rejects her and runs away with Mika to protect the latter from Guren. Shinoa's response is declaring that she'll kill Mika if it means she can get Yuu.]]

* PleaseDontLeaveMe: In Chapter 118, [[spoiler:Shinoa breaks down in tears as she begs Yuu to not go anywhere without her because she can't bear to live without him. Unfortunately for her, Yuu has already made his decision to leave everyone but Mika behind and runs away after apologizing to Shinoa for not being able to return her feelings and stay with her.]]
* RaisedAsAHost: [[spoiler:She, like her sister Mahiru, was birthed and genetically modified with the specific purpose of becoming Shikama Dōji's host body. Despite that, Shinoa managed to resist possession for 16 years out of sheer willpower alone and Shikama Dōji ultimately gives up the chance to possess her because her obsession with Yuu made her harder to control than expected.]]

* SatelliteLoveInterest: She doesn't have personal goals, significant relationships or interests, with her character arc being almost entirely about her attraction to Yuu. It's {{justified|trope}} since her backstory as Mahiru's untalented sister and [[spoiler:Shikama Dōji's potential vessel]] made her unable to see her self-worth and get attached to anything or anyone until she met Yuu and she made being of use to him her entire reason of existence. Later on, this has [[DeconstructedTrope terrible consequences in her psyche]] [[spoiler:when Yuu rejects her desperate confession and abandons her because he has made the choice to save the world without relying on anyone but Mika. Shinoa is unable to cope with the fact that Yuu doesn't need her and prefers to have Mika at his side instead of her, even becoming willing to kill Mika and force Yuu to be with her.]]

* TakeMeInstead: [[spoiler:When Shikama finally leaves her body so he can go retrieve Yuu and Mika, Shinoa offers him to possess her body if that stops him from going after Yuu. Shikama refuses the offer because Shinoa's obsession with Yuu has proven to be more frightening than expected.]]
* TookALevelInJerkass: After [[spoiler:Yuu refuses to stay with her and leaves the squad]], Shinoa's attitude takes a turn for the worse. She becomes much colder, self-centered and ruthless, as she seems to no longer care about anything but making Yuu return her feelings, even being willing to [[MurderTheHypotenuse kill Mika]] to get rid of her main obstacle for Yuu's attention.

* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She's not Yuu's girlfriend, but she has an obvious attraction for him and if Yuu is in danger, she'll step out to defend him. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, Shikama exploits by invading Yuu's mind and attacking him to lure Shinoa in. This gives Shikama the perfect opportunity to finally take control over Shinoa's body completely.]]
* WentCrazyWhenTheyLeft: In Chapter 118, [[spoiler:Yuu rejects Shinoa's feelings and abandons the squad to run away with Mika, completely ignoring Shinoa as she begs him to not leave her because she can't bear to live without him. Next time we see her, Shinoa has become so unstable that she declares she's going to force Yuu to come back to her, even if she has to [[MurderTheHypotenuse kill Mika]] to make that happen.]]
* WhatIsThisFeeling: Shinoa is somewhat emotionally stunted, so when she begins genuinely feeling [[IJustWantToHaveFriends care and affection]] for others (specifically Yu) it throws her for a loop. [[spoiler: With the reveal of her origins and with what happened to her sister in the ''Catastrophe'' novels, this could be a bad thing in the long run.]]

* MoralityChain: She eventually becomes this for Shinoa. [[spoiler:Yuu abandoning the squad]] causes Shinoa to lose her morale and develop disturbingly unhinged behavior. Mitsuba manages to talk sense into her to some level, leading Shinoa to [[spoiler:decide to cut off Guren and Mahiru because they're obviously manipulative, so the Shinoa Squad can find a way to convince Yuu to rejoin them and revive their family members without letting Guren use them as pawns]].

* ArcherArchetype: {{Inverted|Trope}}. Despite wielding a demonic bow, he's very friendly and kind.

* WhatBeautifulEyes: In chapter 46, Ferid comments that Yuu has "clear and beautiful eyes".

* AloofAlly: Later on, Mika unofficially joins the Shinoa Squad, but makes abundantly clear that he's only there to protect Yuu and he has no interest in getting along with anyone else in the team. He also distrusts everyone around him, especially Guren, with Yuu as the sole exception.

* VirtuousCharacterCopy: To Ryo Asuka, since the author admits to have taken inspiration from ''Franchise/{{Devilman}}''. Like Ryo, Mika is the black-haired protagonist's blond childhood friend who is obsessively protective of him. However, Ryo was a BigBadFriend who was ultimately responsible for destroying everything Akira ever loved, whereas Mika truly wishes for nothing but Yuu being safe and happy, even repeatedly sacrificing himself for Yuu's sake.

* WarmBloodbagsAreEverywhere: As time goes by, Mika becomes more and more desperate in controlling his thirst for human blood. He still adamantly refuses to give in to his thirst, no matter how much his body craves human blood. He opts to drink Krul's blood instead [[spoiler: (which has progressively become less effective in quenching his thirst)]] because he doesn't want to lose the last remnant of his humanity and become a true immortal vampire (or a complete monster, in his own words). [[spoiler: In Chapter 36 (Episode 22), after some urging and persuasion from Yuu, he finally gives in to his thirst, drinks Yuu's blood, and turns into a true vampire.]]

* {{Tsundere}}: He's shown to be quite aggressive and was very relunctant to befriend Mika and the Shinoa squad (choosing to work alone than having teammates, and not working together at it) when he first met them, but eventually warms up to them and has shown his protective and caring side. It still doesn't stop him from being rude.

* TookALevelInCheerfulness: Mika's attitude lightens up a lot after [[spoiler:he and Yuu discover that it's Yuu, and not Mika, who is the reincarnation of the angel Mikaela]]. He starts smiling more, makes jokes with Yuu, and acts more like his upbeat and optimistic childhood self. Mainly because now [[spoiler:Yuu is the one who needs to be saved and not him, so he has a proper purpose and reason to oppose the rest of the world, compared to before when he was willing to die to save Yuu and their fellow orphans. So essentially his and Yuu's positions have completely swapped.]]

* InsecureLoveInterest: Part of the reason why he never reciprocated the affections of Sayuri, Shigure and Mito is that he believes they deserve better than the head of a despised low branch family and being in a romantic relationship with him would only bring them disgrace.

* MarkOfTheSupernatural: The members of her family are recognized for their red hair. According to legend, an ancestor of the family, Tohito Jūjō, single-handedly defeated a powerful demon. However, a curse was placed on the bloodline. Since then, all Jūjō descendants were born with red hair.

* AllLovingHero: Yuu learns the everyone he knows, both enemies and allies, have been trapped in a ViciousCycle for ages. Yuu then makes it his main goal to reach a solution where everyone can get a happy ending, the dead can be brought back to life, and no one has to be sacrificed or punished by God.
* AlwaysSaveTheBoy: Mika is ''always'' his first priority. He'll crush anyone who tries to take Mika from him, no matter if they're foe or ally. If he's made choose between the entire world and Mika, Yuu will choose Mika without any doubt or second thoughts. [[spoiler:When Guren presents him with the SadisticChoice to resurrect the humans that died in the past eight years, including the dead Hyakuya orphans, at the cost of sacrificing Mika along with the other vampires and demons, Yuu doesn't hesitate to fight his own comrades for Mika's sake, even though ''Mika himself'' objects to it. However, after he does manages to escape with Mika, Yuu clarifies that he does intend to find a way to save the world that doesn't force him to lose Mika again.]]

* DesperatelyCravesAffection: Shinoa grew up without knowing love from her family and she always believed no one would ever care about her even if she dropped dead. Her lack of close relationships actually worked on her favor for most of her life since it helped her resist Shikama Dōji's influence, but she quickly becomes pathologically dependent on Yuu after he shows her some affection. Soon enough, Shinoa gets desperate to do anything to gain Yuu's favor and praise, even being tempted to take Shikama Dōji's offer to get information about how to turn Mika back into a human since it'll make Yuu owe her.

* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: Shinoa always talks very politely (although with plenty of snarks) and addresses everyone else with [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics "-san"]] or last name + rank. (The only exception is [[LesYay Mitsuba]] whom she calls "Micchan".) Being a daughter of the Hīragi family technically makes her an {{Ojou}}.

* MirrorCharacter: As the series goes on, Shinoa gains several parallels to Yuu, mainly their obsession with the person they love. Like Yuu, Shinoa was rejected by her parents and used in human experiments at a young age, causing her to see herself as worthless and empty. Shinoa develops feelings for Yuu because he was the first person who made her feel needed, just like Mika did for Yuu. Similarly to Yuu, Shinoa becomes determined to do anything to protect her object of affection and makes the decision to stop at nothing to get what she wants, even if it means hurting and even killing people. The key difference is that Mika does love Yuu back and Yuu wants to save everyone for Mika's sake too, in contrast to Shinoa whose love for Yuu is one-sided and she [[MurderTheHypotenuse intends to kill Mika so she can have Yuu to herself]].

* SupportingLeader: She's TheLeader of the Shinoa Squad, but Yuu is TheProtagonist and TheHero.

* {{Yandere}}: As she starts to realize her feelings for Yuu, her affection towards him becomes more and more similar with what her sister Mahiru has towards Guren. This eventually culminates in her declaring that she will go as far as [[MurderTheHypotenuse kill Mika if that allows Yuu to return to her]].

* ActuallyPrettyFunny: When Yuu remembers Narumi as "the one with the limp-fish handshake", Shih&#333 is seen stifling a laugh.

* {{Tsundere}}: A textbook example of a Harsh type. Mitsuba is irritable, unfriendly and somewhat bossy, yet blushes way too easily around Yuu.

* MultiEthnicName: His last name is Japanese (though it comes from the orphanage he lived at), while his first name Mikaela is Latin in origin. However, his name is often shortened to the more Japanese-sounding "Mika".

* GuileHero: In the first chapter, as a {{Foil}} to Yuu, Mika uses his wit to think up an escape plan with the map he stole from Ferid. It backfires because Ferid had set up a trap to kill most of the children.

* TookALevelInCheerfulness: Mika's attitude lightens up a lot after [[spoiler:he and Yuu discover that it's Yuu, and not Mika, who is the reincarnation of the angel Mikaela]]. He starts smiling more, makes jokes with Yuu, and acts more like his upbeat and optimistic childhood self.

* CoolLoser: Starts this way in the ''Catastrophe'' light novels, by his own design. Guren is really smart and talented, but because he's the heir to the Ichinose family, his classmates and teachers treat him like trash. Only his few friends can recognize his true potential and want him to stop hiding it.

* TheChosenOne: Guren mentions a prophecy about Yūichirō when he finds him escaping from the Vampires' underground city, but another eight chapters later and we still have no idea what this means. [[spoiler:He very likely was referring to Yuu possessing the [[ApocalypseMaiden Seraph of the End]] genes.]]

* DevotedToYou: As time goes on, Yuu demonstrates that he returns Mika's obsessive devotion with the same intensity. Yuu even admits that being with Mika is the sole reason for him to continue living. * MeaningfulName: Mikaela's name is derived from ArchangelMichael. Mika is one of the guinea pigs for the Seraph of the End experiments, which involves the angels based on the Literature/BookOfRevelation. * PrettyBoy: He's been described as beautiful by many characters throughout the series. Especially, Yuu repeatedly refers to Mika's [[spoiler:angel]] form as very pretty.
