You have to defeat him then and there, and he's as difficult to battle as the other God battles. Sure enough, defeating him yields a cache of Relics.

* DealWithTheDevil: Earlier in the game, if your party is annihilated in battle, you will be transported to Valhalla, and Odin will offer you a BargainWithHeaven to be resurrected from the beginning of the battle, if you agree to fight Odin someday. But when you finally reach Valhalla through the Sky Pillar, you'll have to fight him ''anyway'', regardless of whether you made the deal. It turns out he was just another DeityOfHumanOrigin searching for more Relics to make himself powerful.
