[[folder:General main party tropes]]
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_main_character_1311.png]]
Tropes that apply to all members of the main party.
* AmbiguousGender: As the entire stat progression system used by monsters entails them shifting through a variety of forms, it's pretty much a given that any monsters in your party will cycle through forms of masculine, feminine, and gender-neutral appearances.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Several of the Human and Esper character designs available in the DS remake. Also applies to the male Mutant in the original game, or at least his in-game sprite.
* ChildhoodFriends: A batch of four such friends. The default party name in the DS remake confirms it.
** InterspeciesFriendship: Quite probably, unless you're going out of your way to make a completely homogeneous party.
* HelloInsertNameHere
* InterspeciesAdoption: The species of the main party members' parents don't change to match whatever race you chose for them to be, making this trope very possible. In fact, it's more likely than not, unless you're specifically coordinating your party's race distribution to avoid it.
** HappilyAdopted: Their relationships with their parents seem no worse off for the difference in species.
* RobotBuddy: You're free to make any or all of the protagonist's companions this, if you wish.
* TrueCompanions: They stick together through thick and thin, from the very beginning of their adventure to the very end.

[[folder:Main Character]]
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_main_character_1311.png]]
* AmbiguousGender: As the entire stat progression system used by monsters entails them shifting through a variety of forms, it's pretty much a given that any monsters in your party will cycle through forms of masculine, feminine, and gender-neutral appearances.
* TheHero: Naturally.
* HulkSpeak: In the DS remake, if you choose to start as a Minidragon[[note]]"Baby-D" in Final Fantasy Legend II[[/note]] or a Familiar[[note]]"Imp" in Final Fantasy Legend II[[/note]].
* InterspeciesAdoption: If you pick any race other than "Human" for the main character.
** HappilyAdopted: The protagonist's love for their parents is just as strong regardless of what race you pick for them.
** RaisedByHumans: True in a literal sense no matter what, but this trope is in full effect if you choose to make the main character a Mutant/Esper, Monster, or Robot.

[[folder:Central Characters]]
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_father_2554.png]]
'''Father'''\
ちちおや ''Chichioya''

* TheAce: Regarded by most as the #1 member of the Guardians.
* CaptainErsatz: Of Franchise/IndianaJones.
* DisappearedDad: He vanishes after the first scene of the story, and never returns for years.
* GoodMorningCrono: How he wakes you up at the beginning.
* RebelLeader: Leads the Guardians, who call him "the Colonel".
* SecretOtherFamily: Appears this way when he shows up seeming to be Lin's father. Turns out he only cares for Lin and her mother while Mask is away.
* WeaponSpecialization: His trademark weapon set is a whip. Especially notable in the remake.
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_apollo_9563.png]]
'''Apollo'''\
アポロン ''Aporon''

* AffablyEvil: Apollo is quite friendly and amicable throughout the game. Even when he reveals he's been using you to gather [=MAGI=] for him, he's still quite polite and soft-spoken. He also lets you attack him for a few rounds during the final battle, though this is more due to (over)confidence.
* BigBad: Though helpful at first, he reveals he's the one that's been attacking the Guardians (As Ashura and Venus were both dead, and Odin had no grudge with them.) and he's trying to use the [=MAGI=] to become completely invincible. He's an actual mastermind behind the plot, while the TrueFinalBoss is just an automated defense system.
* TheDandy: The [[DeityOfHumanOrigin Deities Of Human Origin]] have chosen largely different AGodAmI styles. Apollo has opted to look as elegant and well-dressed a man as possible.
* DeityOfHumanOrigin: Hinted at in the original, as some gods were once mortal beings that accumulated enough [=MAGI=]. Moreso in the [=DS=] remake, where he indicated some history with Father.
* EvilPlan: Collect all the relics and release their power to become a true god.
* {{Expy}}: His appearance is heavily reminiscent of the wizard enemies from ''VideoGame/TheFinalFantasyLegend''.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Apollo's EvilPlan succeeds, but he thinks he has all 77 Relics when there are actually 78 -- the rumor of 77 was planted by the Guardians. Having an incomplete collection, Apollo's Relics prove to be too powerful for him, gruesomely destroying him as he tries to unleash their power.
* GambitPileup: His plan, the Guardian's plan, the heroes plan, etc.
* LightIsNotGood: Though he doesn't seem to have dominion over the sun like his namesake, he does wear white clothing and stay impeccably dressed, while most monsters in the game are horrid beasts.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: In the original game.
* MacguffinDeliveryService: Apollo recognizes that the main characters are better Relic collectors, and plans to let them collect all the remaining Relics. He then steals them all.
* OutGambitted: The guardians spread the belief that there were only 77 Relics. This contributes to Apollo's demise.
* PhlebotinumOverload: Because of the missing [=MAGI=] piece, his power is unstable, and he ends up melting and exploding.
* VillainousRROD: He battles you with powerful attacks and incredible defends with the 77 [=MAGI=]. But due to the missing [=MAGI=], his power is unstable, and he destroys himself.
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_goddess_4818.png]]
'''Goddess'''\
めがみ ''Megami''\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "Isis"

* AlmightyJanitor: Literally. The Goddess's entire occupation is to maintain the proper function of the world, the Central Temple and the Sky Pillars.
* BigGood: The most powerful deity, and a genuine force to protect the world.
* GambitRoulette: In between her needed times of Central Temple [[AlmightyJanitor maintenance]], she intentionally divides herself into smaller pieces and scatters them among the worlds as individually powerful Relics, to promote the raising of heroes who will be powerful enough to collect and assemble the Relics, and then assist her in carrying out repairs.
* GenkiGirl: She's quite chipper and good-humored, much to the party's surprise.
%%* PowersThatBe
* WingedHumanoid: She was given wings in the [=DS=] remake to give her a more angelic, holy appearance.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Home arc]]
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_teacher_4089.png]]
'''Teacher'''\
せんせい ''Sensei''\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "Mr. S"

* ATasteOfPower: Mr. S has many powerful abilities to start off, letting you see what a powerful monster is capable of doing.
* BadassTeacher: He was your teacher in your hometown, and stays behind to guard it once you enter the larger world.
* {{Cyclops}}: As a slime, his design has one single eye floating in his slime body.
* {{Expy}}: Of the slime monsters from ''VideoGame/TheFinalFantasyLegend''. He has the same abilities too. The rest of [=SaGa=] 2's slime monsters have a different appearance, but are still [[{{Cyclops}} one-eyed]].
* GuestStarPartyMember: Your first one, to introduce you to the concept of temporary party members. He works with you through the first cave.
* PlayingWithFire: Knows the Fire spell, and his magic powering it is high enough one-shot the first boss of the game.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ashura & Guardians arc]]
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_kai_6959.png]]
'''Kai'''\
カイ\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "Ki"

* ArmorOfInvincibility: [[GameplayAndStorySegregation Save for the Rhino boss in Ashura's base]], Ki is invincible to all physical attacks, probably because of the Relics inside of her.
* BornWinner: Kai was actually born with Relics micronized inside her own body. That's right, she had ''pieces of the Goddess'' inside her body. This gave Kai the power to [[HealingHands heal]].
* FantasticVoyagePlot: One of the game's dungeons is the interior of Kai's body.
%%* GuestStarPartyMember
* HealingHands: And she'll heal anyone who visits her at the Goddess's temple. She eventually loses this power after the Relics are removed from her body.
* HighPriestess: Of the Goddess's temple, where she's called "Mother Kai".
* WhiteMagicianGirl: She operates a temple where people come from all over to have their wounds healed for free. When she joins your party, she barely has any attack capabilities, but many healing powers.
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_mask_1315.png]]
'''Mask'''\
ふくめん ''Fukumen''

* BodyDouble: For Father, except for that mask he's wearing, such that he's suspected to ''be'' Father during his first appearance.
* CoatHatMask: Has a coat and hat identical to Father's in the Game Boy version. Both he and Father lose their hats in the DS remake.
* DisappearedDad: To Lin.
* GuestStarPartyMember: Will join you for a while once you bust him out of Ashura's prison.
----
[[quoteright:128:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_ashura_6535.png]]
'''Ashura'''\
アシュラ

* DiscOneFinalBoss: He's the first god you kill, and fairly early in the game. Considering he was the BigBad of the last game, this can be fairly surprising.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Ashura was originally just an ordinary Goblin who managed to collect enough Relics.
* HornedHumanoid: Fitting his demonic appearance, Ashura has horns.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: His sprite shows him with six arms. While it doesn't outright give him extra attacks, he does do a lot of damage in combat.
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_lin_9051.png]]
'''Lin'''\
リン ''Rin''\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "Lynn"

%%* AnimeChineseGirl
%%* GuestStarPartyMember
* TheLoad: You have Lin as a guest party member all of twice, each time only for a battle in which she's too weak to make any difference.
* LongLostRelative: The main character thinks Father is also Lin's father, and seriously suspects that Lin is their little sister. This turns out not to be true.
%%* SpellMyNameWithAnS
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Venus arc]]
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_venus_5851.png]]
'''Venus'''\
ビーナス ''Bīnasu''

* DeityOfHumanOrigin: It's hinted that all the gods were once mortals who gathered enough [=MAGI=] to become gods.
* FauxAffablyEvil: She thanks the main characters for defeating Ashura, and grants them permission to come and go in her megalopolis as they please. This is the only extent of her niceness, and she doesn't even to try to disguise how much of a depraved AlphaBitch she is.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: She is the queen of her own city, and while welcoming to your party, she quickly reveals that she enforces her own shallow whims with an iron grip.
* RichBitch: As the queen of a prosperous, technologically advanced city, she adores wealth and class, and greatly looks down on anyone who doesn't live up to her ideals, even those who suffered injuries through no fault of their own.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: Venus denies that her power or beauty comes from Relics, or that there are any Relics in her world at all. Some people are naïve enough to believe this, like Antony.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Venus's reaction, practically word for word, to Olivia deliberately scarring her own face.
* WorldsMostBeautifulWoman: And the most graceless one.
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_olivia_1521.png]]
'''Olivia'''\
オリビア ''Oribia''\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "Flora"

* ArrangedMarriage: To Julius. Called off when Venus dies.
* BeautyIsBad: Olivia decides that freedom from the controlling Venus means marring her own beauty. She slices her own face with a knife and then requests Venus to banish her from her megalopolis. [[ThisIsUnforgivable This only pisses Venus off]].
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_julius_31.png]]
'''Julius'''\
ユリウス ''Yuriusu''\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "Nils"

* ArrangedMarriage: To Olivia. Called off when Venus dies.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He's a demon living in Venus City, but has no real beef with Antony, and willingly steps back once Venus is no longer around to enforce the marriage.
* DoggedNiceGuy: At first Julius seems to be a less sympathetic PrinceCharmingWannabe, until it's clear that he never had any more of a choice in the matter than Olivia.
* EasilyForgiven: Julius isn't really one of the good guys or one of the bad guys. He seems rather ambivalent to Venus's control of his life, mostly excited about getting to marry someone like Olivia. When Venus is finally defeated and Julius is no longer betrothed to Olivia, Julius apologizes for his arrogance and remains friends with Olivia and Antony. Olivia points out that Julius didn't actually ''do'' anything bad -- he didn't actually have a choice in the overall situation, so she saw no fault that needed to be forgiven.
* HopelessSuitor: Julius actually genuinely likes Olivia, but has no real chance of winning her heart from Antony.
* HornedHumanoid: A demon who's beautiful enough to live in Venus's megalopolis.
* MrFanservice: Julius is said to be popular with the girls, though he himself doesn't seem to be fully aware of this.
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_antony_476.png]]
'''Antony'''\
アントニー ''Antonī''\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "Leon"

* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: He only injured his leg, and was still quite beautiful. Venus did not agree, seeing the injury as something that tarnished Antony's perfection, and she banished him from her megalopolis.
%%* LongHairedPrettyBoy
* UnkemptBeauty: After exile. Presumably he was better-manicured when living in Venus's megalopolis.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: In the original. He was shirted in the [[VideoGameRemake remake]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Edo arc]]
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_otama_6241.png]]
'''Otama'''\
お玉\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "Hana"

%%* GuestStarPartyMember
* PrivateDetective: Her dad's former occupation. She kept the business going when her dad died. You assist her in breaking up the banana smuggling ring.
* {{Tomboy}}: An irrepressible one at that.
* YouKilledMyFather: Otama's father was a PrivateDetective who was killed by Echigoya, but she could never prove it. She's seeking justice.
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_rounin_5021.png]]
'''Rônin'''\
ローニン\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "Taro"

* BadassTeacher: He's a schoolteacher with a Muramasa.
* GuestStarPartyMember: Joins up for the final part of the Edo arc to directly battle the Shogun and the Magnate.
* {{Ronin}}: Yes, his appellation and occupation are the same.
* UndercoverCopReveal: Rônin is actually a Guardian, and is friends with Father.
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_denpachi_8357.png]]
'''Denpachi'''\
伝八\
[[DubNameChange FFL2]] "[[SpeciesFirstName Kame]]"

* OnlySaneEmployee: He seems to have more caution and common sense than Otama.
* SpeciesFirstName: In the official 1991 English localization, Denpachi was renamed "Kame", which is Japanese for "turtle".
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_echigoya_5736.png]]
'''Echigoya'''\
越後屋

* AmbiguouslyGay: The DS remake makes him look ''extremely'' CampGay, but the game never comes out and says it. If true, this would also make Echigoya a {{Gayngster}}.
%%* CorruptCorporateExecutive
* EyesAlwaysShut: His appearance in the Game Boy version.
----
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_shougun_4630.png]]
'''Shôgun'''\
将軍

%%* CollaredByFashion
* TheDandy: With a [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI Kefka]]-level CostumePorn.
* TheDragon: To his father, the Magnate.
%%* EvilChancellor
* TheManBehindTheMan: Echigoya was only a lower level gangster compared to Shôgun.
----
[[quoteright:128:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_oogosho_2112.png]]
'''Magnate'''\
大御所\

* DeityOfHumanOrigin: Although he is never given mention by anyone, he is essentially the god of Edo. Unlike the other New Gods, he prefers [[TheManBehindTheMan to rule from the shadows]].
* GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere: After you defeat Shôgun, Magnate arrives out of nowhere, announcing himself as Shôgun's father, and then [[YouHaveFailedMe kills his own son for failing him]]. You have to defeat him then and there, and he's as difficult to battle as the other God battles. Sure enough, defeating him yields a cache of Relics.
%%* HornedHumanoid
* TheManBehindTheMan: The man behind both Shôgun and Echigoya.
* YouHaveFailedMe: He kills his son the Shôgun for allowing himself to be defeated.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Odin arc]]
[[quoteright:96:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saga_2_odin_9665.png]]
'''Odin'''\
オーディン ''Ôdin''

* BloodKnight: He seeks death in battle, and assist your party to realize his wish.
* DeathSeeker: Wanted to ensure his death came at the hands of the world's mightiest warriors.
* DeityOfHumanOrigin: It's hinted that all the gods were once mortals who gathered enough [=MAGI=] to become gods.
* GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere: If you haven't died at any point before reaching his palace.
* TokenGoodTeammate: The only "New God" that doesn't turn out to be a conceited dictator.
