* AGodIAm: Is on a full-on Time Lord Victorious power trip. Only unlike the Doctor, he lacks any moral restraint to hold him back. He even thinks himself superior to [[TopGod the Elders]].

* ShadowArchetype: To the Doctor himself. He possesses all of the Doctor's negative traits (his ego, his manipulative abilities, and even a full on [[AGodIAm Time Lord Victorious power trip]]), but none of his positives. Also, where the Doctor has faith in his companions, the Valeyard believes allies only hinder one's progress. While the Doctor has on many occasions been willing to [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifice himself]] to save others, the Valeyard seems absolutely terrified of [[spoiler:permanently]] dying. He also notably is a ChessMaster, but doesn't seem as good as the Doctor when it comes to performing an IndyPloy. Fitting, as the Valeyard was explained by the Master in the original series to be the personification of the Doctor's inner evil and darker qualities.

* UnderestimatingBadassery: Due to his GodComplex, he believed beating the heroes would be a cake walk, but, while he ''did'' nearly kill them several times, he ultimately severely underestimated them. Special mention goes to Apple Pie and Derpy. He believed the former was nothing but an easily broken child who's only power was to [[HopeBringer bring hope to the others]] and Derpy was a retarded idiot who he'd be able to easily manipulate. The former ends up kicking him square in the head hard enough to leave him vulnerable for the latter to [[spoiler:[[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beat him to death]].]] He also didn't realize Derpy was smart enough [[spoiler:to figure out how he kept regenerating into the Valeyard.]]

Upon arriving in Pony Hell, he's tasked with helping Pinkie Pie save one of her adopted foals, and upon the way rediscovers that GoodFeelsGood. Afterwards, he turns down a lighter sentence in order to help the souls pulling Havoc's chariot find redemption, wondering if one day he might earn it himself. According to WordOfGod, this was due to his death allowing the memories of his past selves more influence on him, giving him at least some moral framework to build on.]]
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: In a way; it's strongly implied that Discord tortured and killed the Doctor repeatedly until he regenerated into someone as twisted as him. Though as opposed to most examples, it wasn't so much that the Doctor was DrivenToMadness as he regenerated so many times the Valeyard persona (said to be the personification of all the Doctor's inner evil and darker qualities) finally came to the surface.
