* TheChosenOne: Ash seems to be the go-to guy for any Legendary which needs a hero to help them. In addition, he's officially been this for the Lugia in ''Anime/{{Pokemon 2000}}'' (though this is [[{{Woolseyism}} dub-only]]), ''might'' be it for Ho-Oh given how many times he sees the damned phoenix (and how many characters he tells this to respond that he was ''only seeing things'', Azelf of the Lake Trio in the Diamond and Pearl Saga (Mespirit and Uxie also chose his companions Dawn and Brock) and Melemele Island's Guardian Tapu Koko sees something in him as he gave Ash a Z-ring and a Z-Crystal in the Sun and Moon Saga.

Through those events, Ash not only decided to keep Goodra and Greninja in Kalos while keeping Hawlucha, Noivern and Talonflame in Professor Oak lab so he would't put them endanger again but also to never mention his Bond Phenomenon ability to anyone else unless its someone he can trust. Although he doesn't want to put Pikachu endanger like that again, Ash would rather have his partner and best friend stay with him as he tries harder than ever to keep him safe.

** After losing to Wulfric and seeing how badly hurt Greninja got, Ash ''really'' hits a low point. The episode actually ends as a DownerEnding, and the next episode preview is also mostly silent. It's also implied Ash has struggles with the idea he may not be the right trainer to bring out Greninja's true potential, which is a new for Ash as no matter what has happened previously, he never questioned his bonds with his Pokémon before.

* IJustWantToBeNormal: Ash has shown to have rare abilities in Aura and Bond Phenomenon, but chooses to be a regular Trainer just out on journey to reach his dream instead of training himself to perfect his powers. He may have the potential to be an Aura Guardian, but he wants to be a Pokémon Master.

** In "Brave the Wave!", after losing his Gym Battle against Brawly, Ash gets annoyed that he lost to a carefree Gym Leader as he thought he wasn't taking battling seriously. Also, Ash even get upset at his friends when they tried to help him then he ran off with Pikachu not far behind him. However, while walking with Pikachu, Ash not only realized that he really lost it towards his friends but also was wrong about Brawly and does know when to be a serious Gym Leader.

* WillfullyWeak: Ash very rarely ever uses his best possible team, normally preferring to go solely with Pikachu and get a new team for the next region. Notably, when he doesn't do this, he typically fairs much better. This is a plot point in his rivalry with Paul: Ash beat Brandon, who curbstomped Paul, but refuses to change his team against Paul to prove his point to him.

* SwissArmyWeapon: Iron Tail can either work as a blunt weapon or as an improvised blade.

Since the League ceremony wasn't finished when Team Flare attacked, it is heavily modified and officially makes everyone who stood against Lysandre champions of the Kalos League, rendering the League results a moot.]]

** In "Battling the Enemy Within", Ash gets himself possessed by the spirit of an evil king but Brandon attempts to save him. Despite breaking free for a brief moment before the evil king possesses him again and Brandon won the battle, Ash was able to hear Pikachu calling out to him as he was able to fight back his possession long enough to get his partner to use Thunderbolt on him, which ultimately saved him from the spirit of the evil kings control and Brandon sealed it away.
** In "Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages", Ash was put under the control by the fury of a Mythical Pokémon but both Pikachu and his Hoopa friend tried to reach out to him, which failed. However, Hoopa was able to free Ash free from the fury's control by calming it down.
** In "Coming Apart at the Dreams!", Ash was almost controlled by Team Flare, although his Greninja was attempted to as well, when the leader of the organization wanted to use him for their plans. However, Ash fought back through his willpower when he heard Pikachu's voice, even getting Greninja to the same.

* IKnowYouAreInThereSomewhereFight:
** In "Team Plasma's Pokémon Power Plot!", Pikachu fell victim of Dr. Colress of Team Plasma experiment for a mind control device. However, Pikachu heard Ash's voice reaching out to him as it helped him break free from Dr. Colress control.
** In "Team Plasma and the Awakening Ceremony!", Pikachu was hit by Team Plasma perfected mind control device. Despite Ash's attempted get through to him, Pikachu wasn't able to hear his Trainer as he ended up knocking him out, which forced N to make a deal for his freedom. However, in the next episode, Pikachu was hit by the device once more but fought back as he not only used his electricity to help him resit the machine influences but also heard Ash, Axew, Cilan and Iris words of encouragement to keep fighting.
** In "A Conspiracy to Conquer!", Pikachu was hypnotized by a rouge Malamar but heard Ash's voice and started fighting back his control.
