* ActuallyPrettyFunny: When Ashido compares his quirk to a GoodBadBug, Mirio can't help but burst out laughing.

* {{Foil}}: To Midoriya. They're both self-sacrificing heroes inspired by All Might who are in it for the greater good rather than any sort of personal gain. Both of them are considered exemplary young heroes and were singled out as potential successors to All Might. They also both have or have had serious difficulties controlling their Quirks. That said, Midoriya is a NervousWreck who CannotTellAJoke and is constantly injuring himself as he struggles to control what is possibly the most powerful Quirk in the entire series. Mirio is an outgoing PerpetualSmiler who spent his entire life mastering his extremely unwieldy Quirk to the point that he's nearly untouchable because of it. Midoriya's greatest strength is his analytical ability and encyclopedic knowledge of the world of heroes but is somewhat lacking in practical experience, even with his unusually action-packed school life. Mirio is BookDumb but has a wealth of experience due to his internship under Sir Nighteye, to the point that he was scouted as a potential #1 hero.

* ChildhoodFriends: He and Tamaki have been friends since the third grade. [[spoiler:In a flashback, it is revealed that one day during high school, it was Mirio who gave him his hero name, Suneater.]]

* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Initially, people would shun him due to the nature of his Quirk which seems more taylored for a Villain than a Hero.

* AscendedExtra: It was established after his first appearance that his Quirk was seen in a much more favorable light after his showing in the Sports Festival. However, while repeatedly ranking highly on popularity polls, for countless chapters, he made extremely sparse cameos for awhile rather than doing anything significant. Much later, though, he finally gets a chance to prove he has what it takes to ascend to the Hero Course the story focuses on.

* CripplingOverspecialization: His problem in the early part of the series is that he's got all of one trick, his Quirk, and in situations where it isn't helpful, like in the entrance exam, or his enemy is ready for it, like in his fight with Midoriya, he's left with nothing but an average high schooler's physique. His training was meant to address this, with his starting to use Eraser Head's capture tool to have more options and getting some voice changing gear to expand his Quirk's usefulness.

* FightsLikeANormal: It's revealed that for some time, Shinso underwent training from Aizawa to have an identical fighting style so he can move into the Hero Course. This is invoked, as Aizawa reveals in a flashback that he, like Shinso, was shunned for having a not-very-flashy/combat oriented Quirk and had to rely on natural hand-to-hand combat to get by.

* TheGadfly: Even after the match with Midoriya is over, he uses his power ''twice'' on him while the two are having an otherwise serious discussion seemingly just to tease Midoriya for being one of the few people who ''is'' comfortable talking to him despite his talent. He doesn't do it to make Midoriya do anything and [[StunnedSilence even he seems surprised when Midoriya falls for his set up the second time]]. Thanking his teammates for their "hard work" after the cavalry battle can also be seen as this since his brainwashing leaves most of them at a loss for what just happened.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:Shinso goes through this when he has a near death experience during what was supposed to be a mock battle. After seeing Midoriya manifest a completely unknown power and nearly killing him by crashing into his hiding spot, he's frozen in fear. He can't even run when Midoriya tells him to and can only watch as Midoriya's own Quirk tries to tear its owner apart until Uraraka begs him to help restrain Midoriya]].

* ImNotHereToMakeFriends: He mentions that he has no intention of becoming buddies with anyone of the Hero Course, since he sees them as obstacles in his way of becoming a great hero. His [[FireForgedFriends audience]] doesn't take it too seriously -- Sero mentions that it looks just like what Todoroki said back in the Sports Festival (before he [[DefrostingIceQueen defrosted]] and became friends with them anyway) and Midoriya and Kaminari seems to want to become friends with Shinso anyway.

** Gets PlayedWith since Class 1-A and 1-B ''also'' have a couple fledgling heroes whose ability aren't combat oriented or flashy either such as Mineta's Sticky Balls or Hagakure's {{Invisibility}}. As well, he gets a chance to transfer into the Hero Course himself after several months of training, so the point could be better said that people like him are stuck working twice as hard as those who lucked out at the entrance exam.

* SitcomArchnemesis: Power Loader, who oversees the Support Department. He regularly gets annoyed with her antics, which often result in chaos. He has even threatens to kick her out on a regular basis.
* SmallNameBigEgo: She makes a big deal about all her inventions whenever she can, but her obsession with making it big clouds her mind so much she fails to recognize that she's not all that well-received.

* TraitorShot: She tricks Iida into wearing some of her equipment by appealing to his sense of good discipline and earnesty. The aside look she makes to Iida is ''wicked''. This is played with, however, in that her ulterior motive [[spoiler:isn't to sabotage Iida. It's to trick him into helping her show off her genuinely useful equipment while she makes an utter mockery of their match by turning it into an extended sales pitch]].

* WrenchWench: She's brilliant teenage inventor who definitely knows her way around machines, and is oftentimes found tinkering with them.

* GoodBadBugs: Referenced in-universe. His ability to instantly show up aboveground when deactivating his Quirk while underground is compared to one of these. The proper term for this kind of video game bug is known as Clipping, where characters and the like pass through objects, environments, and scenery because the game's programming/engine failed to recognize that something collided with a solid object, a.k.a. collision detection. Being ejected out of solid objects when he deactivates his quirk is another aspect of Clipping that gamers often expoit to either reach inaccesible areas or trigger a boost of speed.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Mirio is one of the most benevolent and selfless characters of the series. But if you challenge him or if you hurt someone in front of him... may God help you.
* GrinOfAudacity: He's not above giving one of these to his team mates and his enemies alike but he does this much less frequently than Bakugo for instance.

* LogicalWeakness: The obvious downsides to having a Quirk that lets everything pass through him is that when it's fully activated throughout his body, he can't breathe, see, or feel anything other than a sensation of falling because he still has mass. From a combat standpoint, in order to use his Quirk effectively, he has to be an expert at AwesomenessByAnalysis since he can partially activate his Quirk on separate parts of his body and let things pass through, not to mention having to predict what his opponents will do if he fully activates because he can't see, hear, or feel anything. This means that someone who is an expert at ConfusionFu or is so much [[LightningBruiser stronger and faster]] than him that he simply can't keep up, are very dangerous opponents to fight. Also, while his Quirk is great defensively, his offensive capabilities are limited to close range melee combat so simply staying out of his reach is enough to protect yourself against him.

** Nemuto tries to do a BreakThemByTalking routine on him, Mirio shrugs it off with little effort because he faces his weaknesses head on instead of letting them overcome him.

* RatedMForManly: Mirio represents a shining example of positive masculinity. He's ripped, determined, leader-like and utterly ruthless in combat but also generous, FriendToAllChildren and selfless. A young man with his heart and balls in the right place.

* AdaptationalCurves: She's given a more noticeable bust in the anime than the manga.
* AnimeHair: Modeled after her "twist" motif. It fans out, then gets itself together only for two strands of hair, then fans out again. To make it worse, it's colored in gradient blue, being brighter on top and darker below. [[spoiler:It later gets burned off by Dabi to where it barley reaches her shoulders, and the only "twist" part are two antenna like strands on top.]]

* BadassAdorable: For all her cuteness and good looks, she is still among the top three U.A. students and easily takes out two building sized villains in one attack.

* GeniusDitz: Despite her attention deficiency, the very fact that she’s one of the Big Three speak volumes of her skill level and isn’t someone to be underestimated.

* MsFanservice: Nejire is last year's beauty pageant runner-up, [[spoiler:and this year's winner]]. Even ''Midoriya'' is awed by her good looks during her shoot. Her hero costume is essentially a skin tight bodysuit.

* TrueBlueFemininity: She has a blue ColorMotif, but is delicate, adorable and feminine. The U.A. Cultural Festival Arc reveals she is widely considered one of the best looking girls in the school.

* LovecraftianSuperpower: His "Vast Hybrid" technique combines the various traits of all he's eaten together into forms that can sometimes be nightmarish, like combining various crustaceans with octopus to create clawed, armored tentacles to thrash about.

* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Downplayed. While Kendo notes that Nejire’s free spirited nature just helps emphasize Yuyu’s levelheadedness and cool exterior, and the two of them look the part, Yuyu otherwise doesn't have an overtly tomboyish personality.

* ChekhovsGunman: While she herself isn't mentioned directly, her entire class being expelled by Aizawa was first mentioned all the way back in Chapter 6/Episode 6. She and her class are introduced to the audience ''249'' chapters later, along with the reveal that they were reenrolled back into the school.

* ActuallyPrettyFunny: When Ashido compares his quirk to a buggy game, Mirio can't help but burst out laughing.
