* GutturalGrowler: Whenever Ed Boon does his "GET OVER HERE" and "COME HERE" shouts, he does so in a very low voice. A case of VocalEvolution since Boon's voice wasn't so deep in the original game, becoming so in following installments. Other than that, his various voice actors tend to fall into BaritoneOfStrength rather than this trope.

* NoIndoorVoice: Only applies to MK9 (and vs DCU), Scorpion will shout at anyone and everything in the name of vengeance. The only time he piped down a bit is when Raiden requested him to aid Earthrealm.

* UniquenessDecay: He came back as a revenant to get his revenge on Sub-Zero. In ''X'', Quan Chi brings back all the dead heroes of ''9'' as revenants. Curiously, none share Scorpion's hellfire powers [[spoiler:and he keeps them when resurrected.]] This was explained in the comic book by his ability to control hellfire actually stemming from his sorrow over the deaths of his wife and child.

* NinetiesAntiHero: He fits the general criteria well. He was created in the '90s, and is a mostly neutral anti-hero character, who has a cynical view of the world. He also has a code name that is very fitting of the stereotype and has a backstory that plays out much like a SuperHeroOrigin story. He looks like a cross between eventual ''MK'' [[GuestFighter guest star]] ComicBook/{{Spawn}} and Marvel's ComicBook/GhostRider (who was one of his inspirations).

* AesopAmnesia: Poor Hanzo doesn't ever seem to learn that his RoaringRampageOfRevenge will ''always'' make things worse, both for him and for the heroes. Then again, StatusQuoIsGod. ''11'' finally sees him outgrow this mindset and well and truly move on. Hanzo even appeals to his past spectre self to follow suit. [[DoubleSubverted This is then subverted]] in his Arcade ending, where the power of Kronika's hourglass is too tempting for him to pass up.

* AintTooProudToBeg: After Bi-Han defeats him during the events of MK: Mythologies, he asks for mercy. The player is then given the (non-canon) option to grant it. It's worth noting that sparing Hanzo gets you out of fighting his spectre form in a later boss battle.
* AnArmAndALeg: Played literally straight in one of his Fatalities, and then followed by {{neck snap}}ping in ''Deception''.

** ''11'' steps away from this with his present self as Hanzo. He's finally officially one of the good guys and consciously works with them without letting himself be blinded by rage.

* TheArtifact: In the first and second games, Scorpion wore a Lin Kuei uniform that was colored yellow to symbolize the cowardly nature of the Lin Kuei. ** As of ''X'', he also has two Kunai.
* EasilyForgiven: Kuai Liang let him off for brutally murdering Bi-Han and even became close friends with him. This is justified though as Quan-Chi manipulated him into killing Bi-Han, meaning that Quan-Chi is accountable for it which Kuai Laing outright tells him.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Despite his willingness to work with Kronika and ally with a number of criminals and conquerors like the Black Dragon and the Revenants, he refuses to engage in unnecessary murder and outright tells Liu Kang in an intro that he did not participate in Geras and the Revenants' massacre of the Shaolin. It's also heavily implied that Quan Chi and Shinnok made him completely subservient in X because they knew that Scorpion wouldn't aid them in conquering Earthrealm.
* ExactWords: In ''Deception'', the Elder Gods promised to bring back Scorpion's clan if he agreed to help them by slaying Onaga. Scorpion fulfills his part of the bargain, and the Elder Gods bring back Scorpion's clan... [[spoiler:as undead abominations]].
* EyeScream: His Fatal Blow in ''11'' consists of him throwing two spears into his opponent's eyes and driving them ever deeper.
* TheFaceless: ''Legacy'' aside, Scorpion's facial features as Hanzo were only properly shown for the first time in ''Mortal Kombat X''.

* GameplayAndStorySegregation: If you choose to have Scorpion fight Sektor during Chapter 4 in ''11'', he effortlessly {{No Sell}}s Sektor's flamethrower attack in the cutscene before the battle. During the fight itself, he takes damage from Sektor's flamethrower like anyone else.
* GoodParents: ...You probably weren't expecting this, if so, you weren't alone. Everything about ''Mortal Kombat X'' and Takeda's backstory seems to point to Scorpion being a pretty awesome adoptive dad. This also implies how much of a FamilyMan he could've been [[spoiler:hadn't Quan Chi murdered his family in cold blood]].
** It's heavily implied that he was this to his biological son, Satoshi, prior to his death. For instance, he didn't want to push his son into the life of an assassin, instead wanting him to become a normal person and lead a peaceful life.
* GracefulLoser: In ''Shaolin Monks''. After Liu Kang or Kung Lao repeatedly him into a bed of lava, all he can do before the hellspawns take him is flash them a thumbs up before he's completely submerged in lava and killed.
* GrapplingHookPistol: His "Kunai-rope" is a variant.
* GroinAttack: His X-Ray starts with this.

** He and Sub-Zero appears in ''MLB Slugfest 2006'' but only by means of cheat codes.

* HazyFeelTurn: [[spoiler:His arcade ending of ''X'' has him being Raiden's new right-hand man.]] However, [[spoiler:Raiden has returned to his dark persona once again]], making Scorpion's alignment unknown.
** One pre-fight interaction between the two in ''11'' is fairly cordial, if a bit stern. Raiden simply asks if Scorpion is committed to Earthrealm's defense, Scorpion says he is, and then Raiden says he will hold him to that vow.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Started as evil, went good by the end of ''[=MK2=]'', went evil at the beginning of ''[=MK3=]'' before going good again at the end of it, went evil again at the beginning of ''[=MK4=]'' before going good again at the end of it, went neutral by ''Deception'' when he was recruited by the Elder Gods to kill Onaga, reset to evil in ''[=MK9=]'', then ''finally'' stayed neutral-good in ''[=MKX=]'' and ''[=MK11=]''.
* HeelFaceDoorSlam:
** In ''9'', Raiden, having a premonition that Sub-Zero will become a greater force for evil if killed, tries to convince him to spare Bi-Han by offering to revive his family; and Scorpion agrees. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, after defeating Sub-Zero and intending to spare him, Quan Chi goads Scorpion into killing him by showing him a vision of Sub-Zero murdering his wife and son. Sub-Zero becomes the wraith Noob Saibot, and Scorpion stays in Quan Chi's employ.]] His Arcade Ladder ending had him [[spoiler:eventually find out the truth on his own, and then rather than tormenting Quan Chi in the Netherrealm, he flat out burns him to death]]. Instead of moving on and attempting to secure a better future, Scorpion chooses to hunt down the Titans that he believes are responsible]].

** In a mirror match in ''Mortal Kombat X'', this is what the Scorpions discuss before fighting, no doubt because of his younger self's reckless desisions.
** Chapter 10 of ''Mortal Kombat 11'' has Hanzo encounter his younger self, and shows disapproval of his obsession for revenge and seeing the new Shirai Ryu as "pretenders and outsiders" for not being blood descendants. * IShallTauntYou: His first appearance in ''MK: Mytholgies'' involves him smugly declaring you will fail before running off cackling like a madman. * ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: His fate in the aftermath of the Battle of Armageddon (as seen in ''9''[='=]s intro).
* InformedFlaw: According to Spawn's ending in ''11'', he and Sub-Zero constantly argue with each other, but this flaw is never shown in the story mode whenever they work together and get along like old friends.
* InsistentTerminology: After his resurrection at the hands of Raiden's magic, he refuses to use the Scorpion mantle anymore, preferring others to call him by his real name or Grandmaster Hasashi.

To put this in perspective, he lost to both [[PhysicalGod Raiden]] and arch-rival [[TheRival Sub-Zero]] in ''VideoGame/MortalKombat9''. But come the ''MKX'' comics, whenever Takeda appears to be in grave danger, [[UnstoppableRage Scorpion's rage]] powers him up so much that he manages to ''defeat'' Raiden by strangling him with his signature Kunai's {{chain|Pain}}; then in another battle, overwhelms Kuai Liang with raw willpower and hellfire. It should be noted that both opponents were being empowered by a [[MacGuffin Kamidogu Dagger]] at the time. Although in Kuai Liang's case, Hanzo wouldn't claim it his victory since Sub-Zero was worn out by the time the Dagger's power ran out, thus Scorpion outlasting him as a result.
* ParentalSubstitute: When Kenshi was on the run from the Red Dragons following his wife's murder, he had Hanzo take in his son Takeda for protection. For the next ten years, the Shirai Ryu was Takeda's family and Hanzo as his surrogate father.

* TheRival: By the time of ''X'', he is no longer an ArchEnemy relationship with Kuai Liang, and instead is this, even to the point where they help one another.
* ScreamingWarrior: Scorpion is quite the loud fighter whenever in the middle of kombat, especially notable in ''9'' and ''X''.
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: Only in ''Armageddon'', but when launched on to the catapult Death Trap, Scorpion's voice raises ''quite'' a few octaves higher upon getting launched.

* ShipperOnDeck: Kind of hard to envision ''Scorpion'' of all people being this, but it comes with his being a PapaWolf to Takeda. Hanzo's overall supportive of his relationship with Jacqui, and most pre-fight dialogues in ''11'' with her and Jax show him treating the Briggs family with nothing but respect. One of his intros with Jacqui even has him voice his approval of her, telling her in as many words that "Takeda chose wisely".

* SkullForAHead: Only shown in his Fatalities, the movie, in ''Shaolin Monks'', by way of a glitch in ''4'', his outro in ''Injustice'', and his alternate costume in "Deadly Alliance". [[spoiler:No longer the case as of ''X''.]]
* SplitPersonality: The ''Mortal Kombat X'' comic implies that he had split his mind into two: "Hanzo" embodies his humanity and "Scorpion" his wrath.
* SlashedThroat: In ''2'', Scorpion uses his kunai-rope-thing to slash the opponent's throat as part of a Fatality. Then he follows up by [[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe cutting the enemy in half]].
* SpamAttack: In the GBA versions you can "GETOVERHERE" quite easily.
* StanceSystem:
** In ''Deadly Alliance'', he has Hapkido and Pi Gua as unarmed styles, and Ninja Sword as weapon stance.
** In ''Deception'', he replaces Pi Gua with Moi Fah, and Ninja Sword with Mugai Ryu (which probably is the ''name'' of his sword, but still).
** In ''Armageddon'', he has Hapkido as unarmed style and Mugai Ryu as weapon stance.
* SternTeacher: He took in orphans stranded by the Netherrealm War and trained them as the new Shirai Ryu clan, and his training is pretty harsh.
* StrippedToTheBone: In ''MK vs. DC'', Scorpion summons a pool of lava and drags the opponent in it. Moments later, the body is thrown back out of the pit, now reduced to a skeleton. This returns as his second Fatality in ''9'', with the addition of stabbing them with his kunai and wrapping it around their neck.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: the Scorpion persona is this, giving him access to hellfire and inhuman strength.

He even offers sanctuary to Raiden and the heroes at the Shirai Ryu's Fire Gardens, no questions asked. He even imparts this upon [[spoiler:his angry past self. After fighting and defeating the younger Scorpion he tells him that the Shirai Ryu aren't just a bloodline but a close-knit community of warriors and that even though their family is gone they still have something worth fighting for. The younger Scorpion agrees to honor the pact to help Raiden and continues on with the original plan in Hasashi's place]].
** In spite of his aforementioned hatred of teddies, Scorpion's new Friendship finisher is him happily snuggling a ''humongous'' teddy bear. [[CharacterDevelopment Kharacter Development]] at its finest.
* TranquilFury: Ron Yuan's take on Scorpion is quiet with a lingering current of fiery anger underneath it, as opposed to Patrick Seitz's [[VideoGame/GodOfWar Kratos-esque]] LargeHam take.
* TrueCompanions: In ''11'', he sees the Shirai Ryu as this. Against Jacqui, Hanzo says that the "family bonds" among his clan are sacred and, against Kabal, states that the Shirai Ryu are family, not mercenaries. This also comes with a darker side: Jade warns him in one intro not to let his loyalty to his clan become an obsession after Scorpion had considered that he is nothing without his clan.

* UniquenessDecay: He came back as a revenant to get his revenge on Sub-Zero. In ''Mortal Kombat X'', Quan Chi brings back all the dead heroes of ''9'' as revenants. Curiously, none share Scorpion's hellfire powers [[spoiler:and he keeps them when resurrected.]] This was explained in the comic book by his ability to control hellfire actually stemming from his sorrow over the deaths of his wife and child.

* VariableLengthChain: In ''9'', a chain replaces the rope of his rope-kunai combo weapon.
