* EvilSoundsRaspy: Whenever Ed Boon does his "GET OVER HERE" and "COME HERE" shouts, he does so in a very low voice. A case of VocalEvolution since Boon's voice wasn't so deep in the original game, becoming so in following installments. Other than that, his various voice actors tend to fall into BaritoneOfStrength rather than this trope.

* AgeLift: This version of Hanzo is still a child when the rest of the cast[[labelnote:*]]Chief among them being both his former rivals and even his wife[[/labelnote]] are already adults.
* AgeAppropriateAngst: Like his previous incarnations, this Hanzo is noted to be very aggressive. Though given that he is orphaned and had to survive on his own before meeting the Shirai Ryu, it’s no wonder he turned out as such.
* CompositeCharacter: This Hanzo has traits of Takeda from the second timeline, being trained in the arts of kombat by Scorpion at the behest of his ally (Kenshi and Smoke, respectively) after having lost his mother (and father, in Hanzo's case).
* InSpiteOfANail: Hanzo still lost his original family by someone unknown (similar to his previous selves who usually lost his entire clan), explaining both his StreetUrchin background and a similar anger issue like his previous incarnation. At least he's taken into benevolent hands to temper his issues this time.
* KungFuKid: His martial arts skills impress Smoke enough to recruit him into the Shirai Ryu.
* StreetUrchin: An orphan boy living on the streets prior to attempting to rob Smoke.
* UnrelatedInTheAdaptation: In both the original and reboot timelines, he was married to Harumi and they had a son named Satoshi before their tragic deaths, and his clan destroyed by Quan Chi. In Liu Kang's timeline, he's a teenager to became a Shirai Ryu initiate after Smoke and Kuai Liang were impressed by his skills.

* ChainPain: Ever since the rebooted timeline, the rope that ties his kunai has been replaced by a chain. Scorpion often weaponizes said chain, such as strangling Raiden with it as seen in the ''Mortal Kombat X'' comics.

* CoolMask:
** Scorpion's basic ninja mask would wind up turning into one of these as an armored guard once the games went 3D. IN particular, ''9'' has him wear masks in both costumes that are stylized after a scorpion and his mask is customizable as a gear option in ''11''.
** His Kold War costume has him wear a hellish gas mask.
* CosmicPlaything: In his Arcade ending in ''11'', it is revealed that [[spoiler:his family's deaths happen in every timeline possible. When he finds out there are other gods on Kronika's tier, he assumes they are the reason for his tragedy, and [[RageAgainstTheHeavens wages war against them]].]]

** In ''[[VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse MK vs. DCU]]'', he's the focus of the ''MK'' side's Chapter 5.
** In ''VideoGame/MortalKombat9'', he's the focus of Chapter 3.
** In ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX'', he's the focus of Chapter 9.
** In ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11'', his present self is the focus of Chapter 4 along with Sub-Zero; and Chapter 10 also has his present self - [[spoiler:but only for the first half, when he [[ADeathInTheLimelight dies]]; Past Scorpion takes over the rest of the chapter]].
* CurbStompBattle: Canonically, if Shao Kahn is to believed, the colosseum fight he had with Kuai Lang in the rebooted timeline went ''horribly'' for Hanzo.
* DemBones: As revealed during his signature Fatality, under Scorpion's mask his head is actually a {{flaming skull|s}}. No longer the case; in ''MKX'', he's seen unmasked after regaining his humanity, and has a face. Downplayed in ''MK 11'' where certain abilities added does give him a flaming skeleton look but even if you have his past specter self equipped unmasked, it shows his entire face when he was younger instead of a skull.
* DevilsJobOffer: In ''9'', he's a servant of Quan Chi, the Netherrealm's equivalent of Satan.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler:Technically, in ''his own'' arms. The past Scorpion cradles present Hanzo after the latter was fatally stabbed by D'Vorah. He uses his last breaths to convince his Revenant counterpart that the new Shirai Ryu are worth protecting.]]
* DoNotCallMePaul: As seen above, after he regained his humanity during the events of ''MKX'', he abandons the moniker of Scorpion, instead going as Hanzo Hasashi once again. Quan Chi addresses him as Scorpion on Chapter 9, [[BerserkButton causing his rage to peak]] and earning the sorcerer a fist before he [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beats him down]].
* DownloadableContent:
** In ''9'', his ''[=MK1/2=]'' and the UsefulNotes/{{PlayStation Vita}} exclusive ''[=MK3=]'' Klassic skins and his classic "Toasty!" Fatality.
** AndYourRewardIsClothes: Before being part of the [[DownloadableContent Klassic Pack]], buying [=GameStop=]'s regular edition of ''9'' gave you these items.
** He's one of the DLC characters in the original release of ''VideoGame/InjusticeGodsAmongUs''.
* DrivenToSuicide: Contemplates it in ''X'' in his arcade ending, after [[spoiler:[[MyGodWhatHaveIDone realizing that]] [[NiceJobBreakingItHero he nearly doomed Earthrealm]] [[RevengeBeforeReason by having his rage consume him again]]]]. Instead, Raiden opts for [[spoiler:turning him and his clan into Earth's eternal protectors.]]
* DualWielding:
** Since ''Deadly Alliance'' he's always seen coming to a fight with a pair of swords on his back.
** One of his variations in ''X'' ("Ninjutsu") has this as the focus of his fighting style. In particular, his canon appearance in the ''X'' storyline tends toward this, as it is the variation he uses in the story exclusively after [[spoiler:his resurrection]], considering he wants to limit using {{Hellfire}}.
** As of ''X'', he also has two Kunai.
* EasilyForgiven: Kuai Liang let him off for brutally murdering Bi-Han and even became close friends with him. This is justified though as Quan-Chi manipulated him into killing Bi-Han, meaning that Quan-Chi is accountable for it which Kuai Laing outright tells him.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Despite his willingness to work with Kronika and ally with a number of criminals and conquerors like the Black Dragon and the Revenants, he refuses to engage in unnecessary murder and outright tells Liu Kang in an intro that he did not participate in Geras and the Revenants' massacre of the Shaolin. It's also heavily implied that Quan Chi and Shinnok made him completely subservient in X because they knew that Scorpion wouldn't aid them in conquering Earthrealm.
* ExactWords: In ''Deception'', the Elder Gods promised to bring back Scorpion's clan if he agreed to help them by slaying Onaga. Scorpion fulfills his part of the bargain, and the Elder Gods bring back Scorpion's clan... [[spoiler:as undead abominations]].
* EyeScream: His Fatal Blow in ''11'' consists of him throwing two spears into his opponent's eyes and driving them ever deeper.
* TheFaceless: ''Legacy'' aside, Scorpion's facial features as Hanzo were only properly shown for the first time in ''Mortal Kombat X''.

* GameplayAndStorySegregation: If you choose to have Scorpion fight Sektor during Chapter 4 in ''11'', he effortlessly {{No Sell}}s Sektor's flamethrower attack in the cutscene before the battle. During the fight itself, he takes damage from Sektor's flamethrower like anyone else.
* GoodParents: ...You probably weren't expecting this, if so, you weren't alone. Everything about ''Mortal Kombat X'' and Takeda's backstory seems to point to Scorpion being a pretty awesome adoptive dad. This also implies how much of a FamilyMan he could've been [[spoiler:hadn't Quan Chi murdered his family in cold blood]].
** It's heavily implied that he was this to his biological son, Satoshi, prior to his death. For instance, he didn't want to push his son into the life of an assassin, instead wanting him to become a normal person and lead a peaceful life.
* GracefulLoser: In ''Shaolin Monks''. After Liu Kang or Kung Lao repeatedly him into a bed of lava, all he can do before the hellspawns take him is flash them a thumbs up before he's completely submerged in lava and killed.
* GrapplingHookPistol: His "Kunai-rope" is a variant.

* HazyFeelTurn: [[spoiler:His arcade ending of ''X'' has him being Raiden's new right-hand man.]] However, [[spoiler:Raiden has returned to his dark persona once again]], making Scorpion's alignment unknown.
** One pre-fight interaction between the two in ''11'' is fairly cordial, if a bit stern. Raiden simply asks if Scorpion is committed to Earthrealm's defense, Scorpion says he is, and then Raiden says he will hold him to that vow.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Started as evil, went good by the end of ''[=MK2=]'', went evil at the beginning of ''[=MK3=]'' before going good again at the end of it, went evil again at the beginning of ''[=MK4=]'' before going good again at the end of it, went neutral by ''Deception'' when he was recruited by the Elder Gods to kill Onaga, reset to evil in ''[=MK9=]'', then ''finally'' stayed neutral-good in ''[=MKX=]'' and ''[=MK11=]''.
* HeelFaceDoorSlam:
** In ''9'', Raiden, having a premonition that Sub-Zero will become a greater force for evil if killed, tries to convince him to spare Bi-Han by offering to revive his family; and Scorpion agrees. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, after defeating Sub-Zero and intending to spare him, Quan Chi goads Scorpion into killing him by showing him a vision of Sub-Zero murdering his wife and son. Sub-Zero becomes the wraith Noob Saibot, and Scorpion stays in Quan Chi's employ.]] His Arcade Ladder ending had him [[spoiler:eventually find out the truth on his own, and then rather than tormenting Quan Chi in the Netherrealm, he flat out burns him to death]]. His alignment afterwards is unknown.
** ''MKX'' averts this trope, despite the fact that he ends up putting RevengeBeforeReason at a crucial moment. In the prequel comics to ''MKX'' [[spoiler:in an apparent war between Earth and the Netherrealm, Kenshi somehow freed him "out of the Darkness"; he's still tapped into his Hellish powers, but is seen trying to aid those who lost families in the Netherrealm War by training them as a reformed Shirai Ryu]].
** Later still, in Chapter 9 in ''MKX'''s Story, he [[spoiler:finds out the truth behind what really happened to his family and clan, resolving to make Quan Chi pay, but he comes to blows with the other heroes, as they need Quan Chi in order to free the Revenants]]. His arcade ending has him [[spoiler:being Raiden's new [[TheDragon right-hand man]] in atonement]], so he isn't past redemption despite what he did.
** Scorpion's ''[=MK11=]'' Arcade Ladder ending has [[spoiler:Past!Scorpion, who had joined Raiden's side earlier, succumb to the temptation of using Kronika's hourglass to avert his family's death, only to find that they die in every possible timeline. Instead of moving on and attempting to secure a better future, Scorpion chooses to hunt down the Titans that he believes are responsible]].
* {{Hellfire}}: One of his variations in ''X'' has this name and focuses on his powers using fire that has been ever-present throughout the series. It is fueled by his sorrow over the deaths of his wife and child.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With the younger Sub-Zero. They won’t stop gloating over how they’re both each other's equals in ''11''.

* IHatePastMe:
** In a mirror match in ''Mortal Kombat X'', this is what the Scorpions discuss before fighting, no doubt because of his younger self's reckless desisions.
** Chapter 10 of ''Mortal Kombat 11'' has Hanzo encounter his younger self, and shows disapproval of his obsession for revenge and seeing the new Shirai Ryu as "pretenders and outsiders" for not being blood descendants. [[spoiler:However, the compassion and death of the future Hanzo convinces the younger Scorpion to pull a HeelFaceTurn and atone for his actions.]]
* IShallTauntYou: His first appearance in ''MK: Mytholgies'' involves him smugly declaring you will fail before running off cackling like a madman. Needless to say, not many players were willing to let him off the hook after that. [[NintendoHard Though given what Mythologies was like, it was practically foreshadowing.]]

* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: His fate in the aftermath of the Battle of Armageddon (as seen in ''9''[='=]s intro).
* InformedFlaw: According to Spawn's ending in ''11'', he and Sub-Zero constantly argue with each other, but this flaw is never shown in the story mode whenever they work together and get along like old friends.
* InsistentTerminology: After his resurrection at the hands of Raiden's magic, he refuses to use the Scorpion mantle anymore, preferring others to call him by his real name or Grandmaster Hasashi.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: After being revived, he's still quite rash and short-tempered but he has grown a lot softer and empathetic. His parent-like relationship with a Takeda show this. By ''[=MK11=]'', the jerk part disappears and he's become a genuine NiceGuy and wise, experienced warrior.
* KatanasAreJustBetter:
** Starting with ''Deadly Alliance'', he finally uses one.
** He also carries an additional one on his back, although he only starts using the second katana in ''9''.
** Two of them appears on his back in his Ninjutsu variation in ''X''.
** He carries two on his hip in ''11'' that can be customized with gear.
* KickTheDog:
** Challenge #20 in ''9'' has Scorpion beat up Mileena, [[RuleOfFunny because she made a teddy bear for him and HE HATES TEDDIES!]]
** The Vita-exclusive Bonus Challenge Tower mission "I STILL Hate Teddies!" has him pile more pain on Mileena by not only beating the crap out of her but also choking the nonexistent life out of the teddy bear and subjecting it to the Subway's Stage Fatality!
*** By the time of ''[=MK11=]'', however, [[CharacterDevelopment he seems to have come around to liking teddies]], as his Friendship involves him spearing over a big one and hugging it with a smile on his face.
** He is also the recurrent recipient of kicking; [[spoiler:Scorpion has the nasty habit of repeatedly losing everyone he cares about, from his wife, son and clan to the second iteration of the Shirai Ryu he founded in the ''Mortal Kombat X'' prequel comic.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:While the past version of him is still running around in the present day, the ''real'' Hanzo Hasashi has truly died, and since Quan Chi (the sorcerer who reanimated him) is dead, there's little-to-no chance that he’s coming back or his past version getting restored as a human, permanently stuck as an undead Revenant. Of course, with Fire God Liu Kang restarting history from the beginning of time, this is all rendered moot anyway.]]

To put this in perspective, he lost to both [[PhysicalGod Raiden]] and arch-rival [[TheRival Sub-Zero]] in ''VideoGame/MortalKombat9''. It should be noted that both opponents were being empowered by a [[MacGuffin Kamidogu Dagger]] at the time. Although in Kuai Liang's case, Hanzo wouldn't claim it his victory since Sub-Zero was worn out by the time the Dagger's power ran out, thus Scorpion outlasting him as a result.

* BigDamnHeroes: In the ''X'' comics, he saves Takeda from being killed by [[spoiler:Havik... by ''ripping off Havik's head'']].
* BilingualBonus: One of the characters to speak a native tongue other than English. Dialogue against Takeda and Tanya in ''X'' has him threaten them in Japanese:
--> '''Scorpion:''' ''Itami wa kanjiru darou.''[[labelnote:Translation]]''You will feel this pain.''[[/labelnote]]
* CanonName: Scorpion's rope-and-kunai combo was often called the "Spear" in the move lists of earlier ''MK'' games. Scorpion himself refers to it as his kunai in ''Mortal Kombat X.''
* ChainPain: Ever since the rebooted timeline, the rope that ties his kunai has been replaced by a chain. Scorpion often weaponizes said chain, such as strangling Raiden with it as seen in the ''Mortal Kombat X'' comics.
* CoolMask:
** ''9'' has him wear masks in both costumes that are stylized after a scorpion.
** His mask is customizable as a gear option in ''11''.
** His Kold War costume in ''X'' has him wear a hellish gas mask.
* CurbStompBattle: Canonically, if Shao Kahn is to believed, the colosseum fight he had with Kuai Liang in the rebooted timeline went ''horribly'' for Hanzo.
* DemBones:
** As revealed during his signature Fatality in ''9'', under Scorpion's mask his head is actually a {{flaming skull|s}}.
** Downplayed in ''11''; certain abilities added does give him a flaming skeleton look but even if you have his past specter self equipped unmasked, it shows his entire face when he was younger instead of a skull.
* DevilsJobOffer: In ''9'', he's a servant of Quan Chi, the Netherrealm's equivalent of Satan.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler:Technically, in ''his own'' arms in ''11''. The past Scorpion cradles present Hanzo after the latter was fatally stabbed by D'Vorah. He uses his last breaths to convince his Revenant counterpart that the new Shirai Ryu are worth protecting.]]
* DoNotCallMePaul: As seen above, after he regained his humanity during the events of ''X'', he abandons the moniker of Scorpion, instead going as Hanzo Hasashi once again. Quan Chi addresses him as Scorpion on Chapter 9, [[BerserkButton causing his rage to peak]] and earning the sorcerer a fist before he [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beats him down]].
* DownloadableContent:
* DualWielding:
** Wields a pair of swords in his back in ''9''.
* EasilyForgiven: In ''X'', Kuai Liang lets him off for brutally murdering Bi-Han and even became close friends with him. This is justified though as Quan Chi manipulated him into killing Bi-Han, meaning that Quan Chi is accountable for it which Kuai Liang outright tells him.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** His past self in ''11''; despite his willingness to work with Kronika and ally with a number of criminals and conquerors like the Black Dragon and the Revenants, he refuses to engage in unnecessary murder and outright tells Liu Kang in an intro that he did not participate in Geras and the Revenants' massacre of the Shaolin.
** It's also heavily implied that Quan Chi and Shinnok made him completely subservient in ''X'' because they knew that Scorpion wouldn't aid them in conquering Earthrealm.
* EyeScream: His Fatal Blow in ''11'' consists of him throwing two spears into his opponent's eyes and driving them ever deeper.
* TheFaceless: Scorpion's facial features as Hanzo were only properly shown for the first time in ''X''.
* GoodParents: Everything about ''X'' and Takeda's backstory seems to point to Scorpion being a pretty awesome adoptive dad. This also implies how much of a FamilyMan he could've been [[spoiler:hadn't Quan Chi murdered his family in cold blood]].
%% (ZCE) * GroinAttack: His X-Ray starts with this. -- In which game?
* HazyFeelTurn:
** His arcade ending of ''X'' has him [[spoiler:being Raiden's new right-hand man.]] However, [[spoiler:Raiden has returned to his dark persona once again]], making Scorpion's alignment unknown.
** One pre-fight interaction between the two in ''11'' is fairly cordial, if a bit stern. Raiden simply asks if Scorpion is committed to Earthrealm's defense, Scorpion says he is, and then Raiden says he will hold him to that vow.
* HeelFaceDoorSlam:
** In the prequel comics to ''X'' [[spoiler:in an apparent war between Earth and the Netherrealm, Kenshi somehow freed him "out of the Darkness"; he's still tapped into his Hellish powers, but is seen trying to aid those who lost families in the Netherrealm War by training them as a reformed Shirai Ryu]].
** Later still, in Chapter 9 in ''X''[='=]s Story, he [[spoiler:finds out the truth behind what really happened to his family and clan, resolving to make Quan Chi pay, but he comes to blows with the other heroes, as they need Quan Chi in order to free the Revenants]]. His arcade ending has him [[spoiler:being Raiden's new [[TheDragon right-hand man]] in atonement]], so he isn't past redemption despite what he did.
** His ''11'' Arcade Ladder ending has [[spoiler:Past!Scorpion, who had joined Raiden's side earlier, succumb to the temptation of using Kronika's hourglass to avert his family's death, only to find that they die in every possible timeline. Instead of moving on and attempting to secure a better future, Scorpion chooses to hunt down the Titans that he believes are responsible]].
* HeelFaceTurn: Started as evil in ''9'', then ''finally'' stayed neutral-good in ''X'' and ''11''.
* {{Hellfire}}: One of his variations in ''X'' has this name and focuses on his powers using fire that has been ever-present throughout the series. It is fueled by his sorrow over the deaths of his wife and child.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With the younger Sub-Zero. They won't stop gloating over how they're both each other's equals in ''11''.
* IHatePastMe:
** In a mirror match in ''X'', this is what the Scorpions discuss before fighting, no doubt because of his younger self's reckless desisions.
** Chapter 10 of ''11'' has Hanzo encounter his younger self, and shows disapproval of his obsession for revenge and seeing the new Shirai Ryu as "pretenders and outsiders" for not being blood descendants. [[spoiler:However, the compassion and death of the future Hanzo convinces the younger Scorpion to pull a HeelFaceTurn and atone for his actions.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Even after being revived in ''X'', he's still quite rash and short-tempered but he has grown a lot softer and empathetic. His parent-like relationship with a Takeda show this. By ''11'', the jerk part disappears and he's become a genuine NiceGuy and wise, experienced warrior.
* KatanasAreJustBetter:
** He uses two katanas in ''9''.
** Two of them appears on his back in his Ninjutsu variation in ''X''.
** He carries two on his hip in ''11'' that can be customized with gear.
* KickTheDog:
** Scorpion has the nasty habit of repeatedly losing everyone he cares about, [[spoiler:from his wife, son and clan to the second iteration of the Shirai Ryu he founded in the ''X'' prequel comic]].
*** By the time of ''11'', however, [[CharacterDevelopment he seems to have come around to liking teddies]], as his Friendship involves him spearing over a big one and hugging it with a smile on his face.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:In ''11'', while the past version of him is still running around in the present day, the ''real'' Hanzo Hasashi has truly died, and since Quan Chi (the sorcerer who reanimated him) is dead, there's little-to-no chance that he's coming back or his past version getting restored as a human, permanently stuck as an undead Revenant.]]
* MenacingHandShot: His pre-fight interactions with his opponents in ''X'' include a shot of him holding his chainblade in his hand and then dropping it to take hold of the chain before he goes into his "ready" stance.
* TheMinionMaster: His Inferno Variation in ''X'' centers around him summoning a demon from hell similar to how Noob Saibot did in ''9''.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone:
** Has this reaction when he realizes that [[spoiler:[[MisplacedRetribution he killed the elder Sub-Zero unjustly]].]] Hanzo's reaction is not only remorse for the pain he's caused Kuai Liang in killing his older brother Bi-Han (the aforementioned elder Sub-Zero), but also because he threw away his one chance to restore his wife and son]]. The sheer amount of self-disgust in his voice is palpable.
-->'''Scorpion:''' [[spoiler:(having witnessed evidence of Quan Chi's guilt in exterminating the original Shirai Ryu) Harumi... Satoshi...]]\\
'''Sub-Zero:''' Had I known of [[spoiler:my clan's complicity in the Shirai Ryu's extinction]], our history would be different.\\
'''Scorpion:''' I [[spoiler:''killed'' your brother because I thought he...]]\\
'''Sub-Zero:''' [[spoiler:Quan Chi is responsible for Bi-Han's death]].
** Same thing occurs in his ''MKX'' arcade ending, [[spoiler:when he intends to do hara-kiri for causing Shinnok's invasion and [[RevengeBeforeReason unwittingly dooming the remaining fallen heroes to stay as revenants]]. But Raiden talks him out of it and enlists him and the Shirai Ryu in Earthrealm's defense.]]
* MyNameIsInigoMontoya: [[PreAssKickingOneLiner Delivers a pretty tragic one before giving]] a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown to [[spoiler:Quan Chi]], when the latter calls him [[ThatManIsDead Scorpion]], in ''MKX''.
--> ''"My name... is '''HANZO HASASHI!!!''' [[spoiler:[[YouKilledMyFather You killed my wife... my son...]] and then you [[{{Brainwashed}} burrowed your way into my head...]] [[MisplacedRetribution misdirected my vengeance...]] [[AllDeathsFinal COST ME MY ONE CHANCE TO HAVE THEM RESTORED!!!!]]]]"''
* NiceGuy: Finally reaches this in ''11''. His short fuse has finally been quelled and he is shown to be more polite towards others. He even shows more sympathy and kindness to his past Revenant self, which is quite a contrast when his antagonistic interactions with his wraith persona in the comics and complete aversion to being referred to as Scorpion in the previous game.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Gets hit with this hard in ''X''. He takes down Sonya, Kenshi, and Johnny Cage to free Quan Chi so that he can finally kill him. This not only results in the rest of the fallen heroes ''staying as'' revenants, [[spoiler:but it also gets Shinnok freed and Johnny Cage (the guy who beat Shinnok in the first place) kidnapped. Even though it was all according to D'Vorah, Quan Chi, and Shinnok's plan, one must wonder [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone how Hanzo's taking this]].]] In his Arcade ending, [[spoiler:he contemplates hara-kiri to atone for his rashness in Shinnok's revival.]]
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown:
** Hounded Quan Chi throughout the Netherrealm after ''4'' and delivered ''many'' of these on the sorcerer (Scorpion drew on strength from the 5th plane of the Netherrealm, whereas Quan Chi's sorcery was weakened).
** Was on the receiving end of one delivered by Sub-Zero in ''9'' that was so brutal it's still being referenced by people who witnessed it well into ''11''.
-->'''Shao Kahn''': Now I remember you, Scorpion.\\
'''Scorpion''': I fought Sub-Zero in your Koliseum.\\
'''Shao Kahn''': [[DeadpanSnarker And lost]] ''horribly'', as I recall.
* NoJustNoReaction: In ''11'', one of his pre-fight banters with Johnny has him [[TheComicallySerious flatly refuse]] co-starring in one of his films. ''Twice''.
-->'''Scorpion''': ''(monotone)'' The answer remains [[BluntNo no]].\\
'''Johnny''': ''([[ComicallyMissingThePoint enthused]])'' But you'd be co-starring [[TheGadfly with yours truly!]]\\
'''[[DeadpanSnarker Scorpion]]''': [[TheFriendNobodyLikes Exactly.]]
* NoYou: When he confronts Bi-Han in ''9'' for murdering his clan, Bi-Han simply says, "To hell with your clan." Scorpion replies, "No... to hell with you!" before [[NotHyperbole dragging him into the Netherrealm]].
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: In ''X'', Tanya outright tries [[TheTease hitting]] on him during one of their pre-fight intros (showing some leg, to boot). He responds by ''threatening'' her in Japanese.
* OffWithHisHead:
** It's also present in his "Split Decision" Fatality in ''9'', to the point of even slicing the head in half.
** During one of the trailers for ''9'' he performs Kano's "Eat Your Heart Out" Fatality on Sub-Zero where he rips off their head, rips out their heart, then stuffs their head in the hole where he ripped out their heart.
** His Fatality from ''X'' has a "Off With His Face" variation.
** [[spoiler:This is how he does Quan Chi in]] during the events of ''Mortal Kombat X''.
** He finishes off Raiden this way in the announce trailer for ''11'', although in this case he already [[TheresNoKillLikeOverkill destroyed Raiden's torso by burning through it with hellfire]]. Like the "Who's Next?" Fatality from the original ''X'' trailer, this also appears as a Fatality in-game.
* OffhandBackhand: His "You're Next" Fatality in ''11'' finishes this way. After cutting off his opponent's head and kicking it up, Scorpion launches his spear at the head while facing backwards. This is easily shown with the aid of a camera mod, [[https://youtu.be/uTlLgWTWeXA?t=151 as shown here]].
* OneWingedAngel: Inferno Scorpion from ''Shaolin Monks'' (Scorpion without his mask and damaged skin) reappears in ''9'' on the [=232nd=] floor of the Challenge Tower as an opponent for Kano.
* PapaWolf: Post [[spoiler:regaining his humanity after ''9'', and his pseudo-adopting of Takeda]], threatening said [[spoiler:adoptee]] immediately brings out the raging hellspawn in Hanzo. To put this in perspective, he lost to both [[PhysicalGod Raiden]] and arch-rival [[TheRival Sub-Zero]] in ''9'', but come the ''X'' comics, whenever Takeda appears to be in grave danger, [[UnstoppableRage Scorpion's rage]] powers him up so much that he manages to ''defeat'' Raiden by strangling him with his signature Kunai's {{chain|Pain}}; then in another battle, overwhelms Kuai Liang with raw willpower and hellfire.
* ParentalSubstitute: When Kenshi was on the run from the Red Dragons following his wife's murder in the ''X'' comics, he had Hanzo take in his son Takeda for protection. For the next ten years, the Shirai Ryu was Takeda's family and Hanzo as his surrogate father.
* PetTheDog:
** Post-''9'', he founded a new Shirai Ryu out of lost refugees with nowhere else to go, regained most of his humanity with Kenshi's guidance and pretty much adopted Takeda (Kenshi's estranged son). [[spoiler:Then all of them are slaughtered by a blood demon, save Scorpion and Takeda.]]
** Going by intro dialogue in ''11'', he's downright respectful towards Jade, acknowledging both her skill and her honor and even expresses empathy for her losses, saying they're not that different in that regard. He also displays a lot of goodwill towards Jax in the same game due to being former Revenants; both are aware of Jacqui and Takeda's relationship, and Hanzo does his best to prove that his surrogate son is more than up to the task of protecting Jax's daughter, even going so far as to declare that all of the Briggs' enemies will become the Shirai Ryu's in turn.
* RedOniBlueOni: He's the Blue Oni to his more hotheaded apprentice Takahashi Takeda.
* PowerEchoes: ''9'' onwards gave his voice an ethereal quality enhanced in ''X'' in his revenant form. His voice sounds more metallic in ''11'', largely due to his mask. When unmasked in his human form, however, there is no echo.
* PretenderDiss: Scorpion's [[spoiler:past self in ''11'' dismisses the new Shirai Ryu as "pretenders and outsiders," and serves Kronika to have the original restored. However, he's ultimately convinced of the opposite by his future self.]]
-->'''Hanzo:''' ''The new Shirai Ryu are worthy. It is ''heart'', not ''blood'', which makes them warriors.''
* PrimaryColorChampion: In ''11'', he's added some red to his yellow outfit and is now a full-fledged protector of Earthrealm.
* RevengeBeforeReason:
** [[spoiler:[[DoubleSubversion Double subverted]]]] in ''9''. Raiden tells him not to kill Bi-Han as Sub-Zero, so an even more evil being would show up. After defeating Sub-Zero, [[spoiler:he actually spares him. Then Quan Chi shows Scorpion a vision of Sub-Zero killing his clan and family and... Sub-Zero is no more]].
** He falls victim to it again in ''X'' when he [[spoiler:fights Sonya and the others because they were in his way of killing Quan Chi. [[UnwittingPawn The end result is ultimately Shinnok being freed]].]]
** Scorpion's MK 11's Arcade Ladder ending has Past!Scorpion [[spoiler:vow to kill all of the Titans under the belief that they're responsible for causing his family's death in every possible timeline. He doesn't bother to look for evidence on how they would be able to accomplish such a thing]].
* TheRival: By the time of ''X'', he is no longer an ArchEnemy relationship with Kuai Liang, and instead is this, even to the point where they help one another.
* ScrewDestiny: In ''9'', Raiden tried to talk his way out of him murdering Bi-Han, because an even more evil being might be spawned from Scorpion's actions. [[spoiler:It doesn't work for the Thunder God thanks to Quan Chi]].
* ShipperOnDeck: Kind of hard to envision ''Scorpion'' of all people being this, but it comes with his being a PapaWolf to Takeda. Hanzo's overall supportive of his relationship with Jacqui, and most pre-fight dialogues in ''11'' with her and Jax show him treating the Briggs family with nothing but respect. One of his intros with Jacqui even has him voice his approval of her, telling her in as many words that "Takeda chose wisely".
* SplitPersonality: The ''X'' comic implies that he had split his mind into two: "Hanzo" embodies his humanity and "Scorpion" his wrath.
* SternTeacher: He took in orphans stranded by the Netherrealm War and trained them as the new Shirai Ryu clan, and his training is pretty harsh.
* StrippedToTheBone: In ''9'', Scorpion summons a pool of lava, stabs his opponent with the kunai, surrounding them with the rope, and drags the opponent through the pool. Moments later, the body is thrown back out of the pit, now reduced to a skeleton.
* TearOffYourFace: His Fatality in ''X'' ends this way towards his opponent.
* ThatManIsDead: In ''X'', on account of [[spoiler:being resurrected by Raiden and freed of the Scorpion wraith by [[WarriorTherapist Kenshi]]]], he absolutely hates being called Scorpion, instead going by his given name of Hanzo Hasashi.
* TooManyBelts: His ''X'' costume, according to [[http://i0.wp.com/shoryuken.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/mkx-scorpion-1.jpg a promotional image.]] He has ''over 40 belts'' on his entire outfit.
* TookALevelInKindness:
** He's far nicer as Hanzo than he ever was as Scorpion, though some lingering anger issues persist. In ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX'' this trope is demonstrated in his own chapter when [[spoiler:he told his underlings specifically "strike to wound, not kill" when he tries to exact his vengeance, and only if the Special Forces refused to give him Quan Chi. His old persona would never make that attempt whatsoever.]]
** In ''11'', he's now unambiguously one of the good guys as Hanzo and steps up to protect Earthrealm alongside Kuai Liang without any friction between them. He even offers sanctuary to Raiden and the heroes at the Shirai Ryu's Fire Gardens, no questions asked. He even imparts this upon [[spoiler:his angry past self. After fighting and defeating the younger Scorpion he tells him that the Shirai Ryu aren't just a bloodline but a close-knit community of warriors and that even though their family is gone they still have something worth fighting for. The younger Scorpion agrees to honor the pact to help Raiden and continues on with the original plan in Hasashi's place]].
** In spite of his aforementioned hatred of teddies, Scorpion's new Friendship finisher is him happily snuggling a ''humongous'' teddy bear. [[CharacterDevelopment Kharacter Development]] at its finest.
* TranquilFury: Ron Yuan's take on Scorpion is quiet with a lingering current of fiery anger underneath it, as opposed to Patrick Seitz's [[VideoGame/GodOfWar Kratos-esque]] LargeHam take.
* TrueCompanions: In ''11'', he sees the Shirai Ryu as this. Against Jacqui, Hanzo says that the "family bonds" among his clan are sacred and, against Kabal, states that the Shirai Ryu are family, not mercenaries. This also comes with a darker side: Jade warns him in one intro not to let his loyalty to his clan become an obsession after Scorpion had considered that he is nothing without his clan.
* UniquenessDecay: He came back as a revenant to get his revenge on Sub-Zero. In ''X'', Quan Chi brings back all the dead heroes of ''9'' as revenants. Curiously, none share Scorpion's hellfire powers [[spoiler:and he keeps them when resurrected.]] This was explained in the comic book by his ability to control hellfire actually stemming from his sorrow over the deaths of his wife and child.
* VariableLengthChain: In ''9'', a chain replaces the rope of his rope-kunai combo weapon.
* VengeanceFeelsEmpty: If the way he hung his head after killing Bi-Han was any indication. [[spoiler:He didn't even feel that cathartic after killing Quan Chi, as his unthinking drive for revenge ended up nearly dooming Earthrealm. It got so bad that he contemplated ''suicide''.]] By ''11'', however, he seems to have made peace with himself.
* TheWorfEffect:
** In ''9'', Kuai-Liang tracks him down and basically uses him as a bar rag to clean the proverbial tavern floor that is Shao Kahn's arena. His every appearance in the story-mode from then on involves him getting beaten up by various characters, such as Raiden when he goes to the Netherrealm.
** In ''X'', he suffers a deep wound from [[spoiler:D'Vorah, of all people, before Shinnok [[CurbStompBattle instant KOs]] him via Amulet Blast. Though to be fair, that [[AmuletOfConcentratedAwesome thing]] basically spells "Instant Win!" for whoever possesses it.]]
*** [[spoiler:''11'' takes this to its extreme, as this time D'Vorah fatally wounds him and he passes away in the arms of his younger self.]]
* WorthyOpponent: In ''11'', he is shown to greatly respect Liu Kang, Kuai Liang, Kotal Kahn and the Briggs. In particular, he is very impressed that the Briggs take family as important as the Shirai Ryu and tells Jacqui that "[[PetTheDog Takeda has chosen wisely]]".

* YouKilledMyFather: His vendetta against Bi-Han is this, as he murdered his wife and son during the Shirai Ryu massacre. He later finds out that Quan-Chi is the actual culprit and he shapeshifted as Bi-Han to frame him of this wrongdoing, which leads Hanzo into redirecting his vengeance towards him instead.

** In ''Scorpion's Revenge'', he shows his son a scorpion escaping peril. He notes while it is certainly strong and fast, its [[{{Determinator}} will]] is its true strength. [[spoiler: He remembers this after learning Quan-Chi was his family's true killer, allowing him to [[HeroicSecondWind shrug off fatal wounds]] in order to exact justice.]]

* {{Brainwashed}}: After Quan Chi [[ReforgedIntoAMinion resurrects Hanzo]], the sorcerer lied to the Shirai Ryu that Bi-Han wasn't only his killer, but also his family and clan's murderer, and promises the spectre to kill others in vengeance for his clan's death. Scorpion accepts. What keeps Scorpion from slipping into [[BrainwashedAndCrazy "crazy"]] territory is that the man kept his sense of morality and honor.

* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler: Technically, in ''his own'' arms. The past Scorpion cradles present Hanzo after the latter was fatally stabbed by D'Vorah. He uses his last breaths to convince his Revenant counterpart that the new Shirai Ryu are worth protecting.]]

* ReforgedIntoAMinion: The first example in the series. He is resurrected in the Netherrealm to serve Quan Chi and Shinnok, and given his past expertise as a {{Ninja}}, he becomes TheDragon to the former.

* SternTeacher: He took in orphans stranded by the Netherrealm War and trained them as the new Shirai Ryu clan, and his training is pretty harsh.

* TookALevelInKindness: He's far nicer as Hanzo than he ever was as Scorpion, though some lingering anger issues persist.
** In MK 11 he even imparts this upon [[spoiler:his angry past self. After fighting and defeating the younger Scorpion he tells him that the Shirai Ryu aren't just a bloodline but a close-knit community of warriors and that even though their family is gone they still have something worth fighting for.
