* MagicKnight
MagicKnight: Maximo is mostly a warrior, but the magic he can imbue in his sword and shield to use elemental attacks as well.
* NotAfraidToDie
NotAfraidToDie: Shows nothing but defiance and dignity when Grim appears before him.
* OddFriendship
OddFriendship: With Grim, the amiable if morbid Death figure of the realm of the dead.
* RedBaron
RedBaron: As of the second game, he's known as "The Man who walks with Death".
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething
RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: King or not, he's a man of action and the playable protagonist.
* ScarfOfAsskicking
ScarfOfAsskicking: In his basic armor, Maximo's lower face and neck are wrapped in an heroic red scarf.
* SpinAttack
SpinAttack: One of his sword upgrades, he learns it as a permament move in the second game, where it can be performed with hammers too.
* SwordPlant
SwordPlant: While in midair, Maximo can perform a devastating dive attack which plunges the sword into the ground, causing a small shockwave (which can be powered up by expanding the range and causing scythe blades to pop out of the ground). In ''Ghosts to Glory'' he needs to use it to activate checkpoints.
* ThrowingYourShieldAlwaysWorks
ThrowingYourShieldAlwaysWorks: Maximo can attack from afar by throwing his shield (which, when upgraded, can sprout blades, hover in place, attract coins and move like a boomerang). Each attack though decreases the shield's durability.

Added DiffLines:

* AncestralWeapon: His sword, Parilla, was the treasure of his family, handed down in his family line. It's even referred to as "Treasure Sword" in the Japanese text.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: ''King'' Maximo is an excellent warrior capable of toppling armies of undead on his own, though his throne is usurped by Achille at the start of the game.
* BodyArmorAsHitPoints: Like Arthur from ''VideoGame/GhostsAndGoblins'', Maximo's armor is relative to his health: he can have up to three bars of health, losing one bar will reduce his armor until he's in his boxers.
* ChoiceOfTwoWeapons: In ''Vs Army of Zin'', Maximo can wield massive two-handed hammers instead of his sword: the weapon is slower and held in both hands, but packs a bigger punch.
* CoolHelmet: On three or more health bars, Maximo gets a cool helmet with a massive crest similar to a Corinthian helm in design.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Maximo has dark hair and a frowning expression, can wield powers of darkness and is buddy buddy with Death, but he's a generous and noble soul through and through.
* DavidVersusGoliath: All the bosses are noticeably taller than Maximo, ranging from a head taller to towering over him to the point that not even by jumping he can reach their faces.
* TheDeterminator: Fights across hordes of undead, braves the local equivalent of Hell and attacks an entire castle on his own to save his queen. In the sequel he doesn't stop, ready to take down a legendary, seemingly invincible army to help a friend.
* DuelingScars: Has a noticeable scar over his right eye. In ''Vs Army of Zin'', we learn that Baron Hawkmoor did it to him.
