* FatalFlaw: FatalFlaw:
**
Greed. To the point that Hammond was only interested in one thing: making a profit. As such, he is more worried didn't care about the technicalities of genetic work, constantly ignored the park's numerous problems, cut far too many corners to avoid spending money and had no qualms about turning to illegal means to get what he wanted such as blackmailing Nedry. He also prioritized his dinosaurs over the well-being and safety of his employees because of how expensive they were.
** [[NeverMyFault Irresponsibility.]] Hammond constantly took credit for all the hard work his employees did, behaving as if he was the sole reason Jurassic Park would be a masterpiece. However, when problems arose, he never took responsibility for his actions and instead blamed others for them. This left him unable to recognize that most of Jurassic Park's problems were because of his greed and irresponsible leadership.
** [[IRejectYourReality Denial.]] When Hammond was presented with the problems of Jurassic Park, instead of actively addressing them, he kept denying the severity of the situations and claimed he was still in control. Whether it was the dinosaurs' populations increasing drastically, Nedry's sabotage of the security system and
the dinosaurs than people endangered by them because they cost so much money running rampant throughout Isla Nublar, Hammond remained in denial of how severe the situation was. This was done not to make.assure others that everything okay, but to assure himself that he was still in control.

* FatalFlaw: Pride. He's so proud of what he has already done for dinosaur cloning, even when he's planning to make improved versions of the dinosaurs, that he refuses to see any possible flaws in his methods unless given concrete proof. And even then, he simply spins his mistakes as correct accidents.

** SkewedPriorities. After discovering the dinosaurs were breeding, instead of realizing the error he had made in their creation, Wu took it as a positive to demonstrate his genetic work. He remains focused on the 'genius' of his genetic work throughout the book rather than admitting that he didn't have control over the dinosaurs [[spoiler: until he is killed by Velociraptors.]]

Nedry, being the one who convinced Nedry to try stealing dinosaur embryos and awarding him with a large sum of cash once he's convinced that Nedry is being overworked with little-to-no extra pay.
* ManipulativeBastard: Look at his previous projects (rabies tests, genetically engineered potato)and wonder why he is still in business. He also manipulated a number of scientists into working for his benefit and was the one who convinced Nedry to get back at [=InGen=] if he wants to be given a large sum of money.

Added DiffLines:

* VilerNewVillain: As bad as Hammond is, Dodgson proves to be much worse than him. While they are responsible for most of the problems that happen in the novels, Hammond is disturbingly lax about the situation of Jurassic Park and wants to pursue his goal, even if several have died for it and it's virtually impossible at this point. Dodgson, on the other hand, is more direct about stealing dinosaur eggs and embryos and is not above directly killing anybody if it suits his purpose. Not to mention Hammond's desire of a dinosaur theme park was somewhat genuine, if very warped and twisted, whereas Dodgson was a criminal before his involvement with Biosyn and sticks to just that. Not to mention Dodgson had already killed 10 people before the first book.
* WouldHitAGirl: He once tries to shove Sarah out of a congested vehicle when a ''T. rex'' is near them, hoping that the dinosaur would see and eat her first and sparing himself the benefit of having to invest his time in cooperating with someone in order to survive.
* WouldHurtAChild: Some of the victims of Dodgson's experimental rabies infection happened to be children.

Borderline DirtyCoward that continuously whines about the dangerousness of the situation and understandably doesn't wants to risk his life if he doesn't see the need (Grant has to strong-arm him into coming along to find the raptor nests, for example, once the park is back online), but still works on trying to put the park back in function so rescue can be called, and is determined to check the park's functionality with a magnifying glass when he first arrives because he agrees with his firm's beliefs that Hammond is either full of crap or working on very dangerous stuff.

* BigBad: He's the main human antagonist of the novel thematically, being the [[CorruptCorporateExecutive CEO]] of [=InGen=] and creator of Jurassic Park. Virtually all of the problems that happen in Jurassic Park can be traced back to Hammond's decisions, from the insistence of displaying "real" (but dangerous) dinosaurs over the safe "domesticated" version to the over reliance of the park's automation system to the inadequate security measures meant to keep visitors safe from the dinosaurs (as well as keeping the dinosaurs from escaping the island, including Muldoon's requests for extra and more powerful weapons). Even Nedry's betrayal that kickstarts the main incident can be linked to Hammond blackmailing him to work overtime on the park's automation program and being underpaid. * FriendToAllChildren: Hammond claims that Jurassic Park was primary meant for children and that he couldn't wait to see the look on their faces when they see real live dinosaurs for the first time. It's subverted, once it turns out that Hammond only cares about making a profit off the rich and only brought Tim and Lex as means to convince Gennaro from shutting down the park. By the end of the novel, he curses his own grandchildren for being nothing but trouble after he broke his leg fleeing from recorded ''T. Rex'' call that Tim and Lex were playing at the control room.

He shows little to no empathy for anyone, even his grandchildren, when they are dying at the jaws of dinosaurs, only concerned about the money and good publicity he would lose out of all this. He's also remarkably short-sighted, cutting corners in the park for short-term profits rather than considering long-term consequences. * FatBastard: He's a fat, overworked computer programmer for the entire system of Jurassic Park and he deliberately sabotages the system to give himself cover to smuggle the dinosaur embryos to [=InGen=]'s rival for $1.5 million. The fact that his plan would have put many lives in danger (and open Nedry for lawsuit) has never crossed his short-sighted mind.

He took Dodgson's offer of stealing the embryos for $1.5 million, not realizing that the embryos are actually worth $2-10 million. He also didn't take into account the tropical storm affecting visibility on the road, or otherwise he would have chosen a different date to pull off his heist.

He took Dodgson's offer of stealing the embryos for $1.5 million, not realizing that the embryos are actually worth $2-10 million. He also didn't take into account the tropical storm affecting visibility on the road, or otherwise otherwise, he would have chosen a different date to pull off his heist.

* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: [=InGen=] demanded he create a gigantic computer system far more ambitious and time consuming than any project before, and refused to give him the full details of what the system was actually ''for'', leaving Nedry to work in the dark. Inevitably, this leads to glitches and bugs but [[NeverMyFault the company blames Nedry for "poor programming" rather than them not giving him all the necessary details needed to create the system]]. And top it all off, they refused to pay Nedry extra for all the time it would take untangling the bugs, because from [=InGen's=] point of view they were Nedry's fault in the first place. Instead, they began to harass and defame Nedry to his other clients, so Nedry had to go without the overtime for him and the rest of his company if he ever wanted to work again. It's no wonder that he is willing to steal dinosaur embryos and give them to a rival company for a million and a half dollars.
* TheMole: For Lewis Dogdson. It didn't take much for Dogdson to recruit the best inside-man he could have in Jurassic Park at the cheapest price.

He also thinks himself to be a clever planner who thought of every factor in his smuggling operation... except for checking the weather forecast.
* TooCleverByHalf: His plan to steal the embryos and made sure that Dodgson didn't backed off from paying him, even if not high on potential "[[ThePerfectCrime perfect crime]]" material, was still pretty clever and would have put egg on Hammond's ''and'' Dodgson's face. Too bad that he got lost en route to the embryo drop-off point...

** JerkassHasAPoint: He does at least have a point in that he is the park's publicist and not a tour guide, so however obnoxious he may be, his resentment at having menial tasks forced on him isn't entirely misplaced. He also calls out Grant quite vehemently for manhandling a baby raptor, since at that age they can be quite delicate and essentially die from shock. He's probably thinking more about all the expensive genetic technology that went into making the animal, but he's quite right that Grant has no right perform a full, rough, uncaring physical on it just because he's curious.

It's subverted when the survivors discover the nest of the wild raptors. The wild raptors seem to tolerate their presence, to point of ignoring them in favor of finding a ship to get off the island.
* AxCrazy: The eight raptors will attack anything on sight, even if they're not hungry. In fact, if they're not pouncing on you on first sight, that means you're already dead.
* ChameleonCamouflage: Some of the wild raptors can change colors, most notably Clarence the male raptor that Grant and the kids discover on their way back to the Visitor Center.
* TheDreaded: The most vicious and dangerous of the creatures on the island. Muldoon believes the raptors to be too dangerous to be kept alive and would have them all destroyed had the park administration not worried about the money lost in these clones.
* EvilEggEater: Grant theorizes that ''Velociraptors'' are nest raiders, citing that other small carnivores as well as modern birds have exhibited such behavior before. He uses this theory to explain why there's a significant increase in ''Velociraptor'' numbers and yet so little increase in herbivore numbers, and later would exploit this behavior against the raptors seeking him in the hatchery, poisoning several eggs and then rolling them towards their hungry mouths.
* ForTheEvulz: What makes the raptors stand out from other carnivorous dinosaurs is that they hunt even when they're not hungry and they kill for the sake of killing.
* TheHeavy: The main dinosaur antagonists of the book, and the ones that cause the most trouble for the protagonists.
* InformedSpecies: A complicated case. They're referred to as ''Velociraptor antirrhopus'', suggesting that they're actually meant to be ''Deinonychus'', and indeed Crichton based them on that species. The true ''Velociraptor'' also appears in the book, but only in infant form; the ones that the main characters face are ''Deinonychus'' in all but name.
* InSeriesNickname: Often universally referred as "Raptors" for short.
* LightningBruiser: Fast, agile, powerful, acrobatic, intelligent, and extremely hard to kill. They are perfect human-killing machines and thanks to their relatively small size (compared to other dinosaurs), there's almost no place that's safe from the raptors.
* MadeOfIron: A ''Velociraptor'' has a distributed nervous system, meaning it doesn't die fast, even with a direct hit to the brain. Its body is solidly built with thick ribs that protects its heart all too well. And it's difficult to cripple the raptor's legs or hindquarters. It's no wonder Muldoon wants '''''[[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill rocket launchers]]''''' on the island.
* MonstrousCannibalism: Tim and Lex try to use the baby ''Velociraptor'' that they previously met back in the lab tour to distract the rampaging adults. They are horrified when the adults tear apart and eat the poor thing without second thought. Later, when one of the raptors is poisoned by Dr. Grant, it didn't take long for the other raptor to view its hapless companion as food.
* RaptorAttack: Like the film, they're the reason this trope exists in the first place.
* TokenGoodTeammate: One of them (named "Clarence" by Lex) befriends the heroes, or at least doesn't attack them.
* {{Sadist}}s: As Muldoon puts it, the raptors often kill for pleasure and never pass up prey. Some of their victims were found torn to shreds but otherwise uneaten. However, this only applies to the raptors held in captivity.
* StockDinosaurs: This book is what ''made'' the ''Velociraptor'' stock.
* SuperPersistentPredator: Raptors always hunt, even when they are not hungry. And humans are their favorite prey because of how easy it is to kill one. And they will not rest till they've hunted all of humans on the island.

the Late Cretaceous period around 68-65 million years ago.largest carnivorous dinosaurs of the Early Jurassic Period.

* AmbiguousSituation: Via {{retcon}} from the sequel ''Literature/TheLostWorld1995''. In original novel, Rexy's inability to see motionless objects is theorized by Grant to be the result of mutation side-effects caused by [=InGen=]'s amphibian DNA splicing to fill in the gaps. But in the sequel novel, it's mentioned that Grant proposed an alternative theory that torrential downpour can confuse a ''T. rex'' because it's not used to wet climate, which just so happens to be the weather condition during the breakout. Both theories are derided by Dr. Levine, who indirectly suggests that Rexy wasn't hungry when it encountered Grant. Suffice to say, no one knows why Grant wasn't killed that night, although Rexy is shown eating a goat in its first appearance.
* DecoyAntagonist: The novel makes it seem that Rexy is the [[BigBad main dinosaur antagonist of the story]], as her rampage cause devastation across the park and she's hunting down Grant and the kids. But then she succumbs to the tranquilizers shot by Muldoon before she has a chance to reach the Visitor Center and shortly after her sedation, the park's power shuts down and it's revealed that all electric fences have been off for hours. It's then the readers realize that the ''Velociraptors'', [[TheDreaded regarded to be even more dangerous]] than the ''T. rex'', are true dinosaur antagonists of the novel.
* EvilSmellsBad: Rexy's smell and habits are presented in nauseating detail. She is described as smelling like a garbage dump and her tongue stinks of urine. While asleep, she's covered in buzzing flies and lets out a disgusting belch after eating a dead hadrosaur.
* TheHeavy: Aside from the raptors, Rexy is the one who causes the most trouble for the park. She breaks into several enclosures to eat the dinosaurs living there, forcing the park staff to focus all of their attention on her (and ignoring other issues like auxiliary power), and she hunts Grant and the kids as they try to make their way back to the Visitor Center.
* InSeriesNickname: Robert Muldoon is the one who calls the adult ''T. rex'' "Rexy."
* KingOfTheDinosaurs: Rexy is the crowned attraction of the park, so much so that the park staff prioritizes on subduing the animal alive and unharmed rather than check to see if they're running on main power or if the raptors are kept in their holding pen. She spends the most of the novel as a constant threat to Grant and kids as they make their way to the visitor center through the park, stalking them from a distance before making an ambush attempt time and time again.
* LightningBruiser: Rexy is powerful enough to bring down a fully grown ''Apatosaurus'' and she can run incredibly fast, almost catching up to a gas-powered jeep.
* LivingMotionDetector: A side-effect of the amphibian DNA splicing is that Rexy's vision is based on movement. A fortunate mutation for the scared-stiff Grant when he finds himself completely exposed before the beast. However, the ''T. rex'' family on Isla Sorna can see motionless figures just fine as [[EatenAlive poor Baselton finds out]].
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: The juvenile ''rex''; while it appears less of a threat than the adult and not quite steady on its feet yet, [[spoiler:it actually succeeds at killing a human, unlike the adult]].
* OverlyLongTongue: She has one, presumably because of the frog DNA.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: Her species's primary color here is brick red. And she is follows Grant and the kids to no ends.
* ReptilesAreAbhorrent: Her reptilian qualities are really played up.
* RoarBeforeBeating: Rexy often roars at her potential prey before going for the kill, likely to make up for its motion-based vision impairment.
* ScaryTeeth: To be expected from a dinosaur with teeth like ''steak knives''.
* SheIsTheKing: Even more so than the films. While Rexy's gender in the films has been emphasized to be female, the novel often refers to Rexy as a male, which is {{lampshaded}} by John Arnold during the tour of the control room.
* StockDinosaurs: THE Stock Dinosaur.
* SuperPersistentPredator: Unlike in the movie, Rexy is clearly hunting down Grant's group for the majority of the novel, particularly when they try to reach civilization through the river system. She immediately disregards her freshly killed hadrosaur and goes after Grant and the kids in the lagoon, despite the hadrosaur carcass providing her with enough meat to keep her occupied for hours. She even waits for them at the base of the waterfall with jaws wide open, hoping for the humans to fall into her mouth. Ironically, unlike the film version, this ''rex'' fails to actually eat any humans (although it does [[spoiler:lethally injure Ian Malcolm; however, [[OnlyMostlyDead he got better]]]]); it's the juvenile ''rex'' who [[spoiler:devours Ed Regis]].
* UncertainDoom: Well, more like most definitely doomed but the circumstances are unknown. Did Rexy die from the napalm bombing at the end of the story, or did she already drowned in the pool she's in after being tranquilized by Muldoon?
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Her rampage across the park distracts the entire Jurassic Park staff from noticing that they've been running on auxiliary power the whole time, thus causing a power failure that allows [[TheDreaded the raptors]] to break free. Additionally, her hunting of Grant and the kids forces them to take the river route, which has no motion sensors to signal back to the control room.

They also likely did not have venom in real-life, which is a deliberate invention on Crichton's part; mainly for RuleOfScary and [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools to illustrate a point of just how little fossils can tell us about a dinosaur]].

* PoisonousPerson: Their ability to spit venom, as well as the fact the venom can cause permanent blindness and even death, is why the river cruise

Badass Mustache and Badass Beard are being merged into Manly Facial Hair. Examples that don't fit or are zero-context are removed. To qualify for Manly Facial Hair, the facial hair must be associated with masculinity in some way. Please read the trope description before readding to make sure the example qualifies.

* BadassBeard: Inspired by the real Dr. Robert T. Bakker.

* BadassMustache: A steel gray mustache to be precise. And unlike the film, he's badass enough to survive the whole ordeal.

* EvilEggEater: Grant theorizes that ''Velociraptors'' are nest raiders, citing that other small carnivores as well as modern birds have exhibited such behavior before. He uses this theory to explain why there's a significant increase in ''Velociraptor'' numbers and yet so little increase in herbivore numbers, and later would exploit this behavior against the raptors seeking him in the hatchery, poisoning several eggs and then rolling them towards the unsuspecting raptors.
