The living embodiment of the red light, Butcher feeds on hatred and fury the way most lifeforms eat food. Anyone he takes as his host will go on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge. When the anger begins to subside, he'll abandon his current host and seek out a new one to ease his insatiable hunger. The Spectre, spirit of God's wrath, sees Butcher's existence as a perversion of his own divine mission.

Keith Kenyon was a chemist in Coast City who discovered a sunken chest full of gold that had been irradiated by chemical waste. Using the irradiated gold, he created a serum that granted him super-strength and invulnerability for a limited time and became the super-criminal Goldface; eventually, the serum permanently turned his body into solid gold. After fighting Hal Jordan for years and killing Tomar-Re, he moved his base of operations to Central City and fought TheFlash. He was imprisoned and, after time served, turned over a new leaf and became Keystone City's union commissioner.

After Ke'Haan was killed by the Anti-Monitor in the SinestroCorpsWar, Laira [[{{Understatement}} thoroughly embraced her new authorization to use lethal force on Sinestros]]. This came to a head when Amon Sur slaughtered Ke'Haan's family, prompting Laira to mercilessly strike him down even though he surrendered himself willingly. Despite her protests, the other Lanterns and the Guardians denounced it as murder and kicked her out of the Corps. A Red Power Ring soon noticed her fury and made her a Red Lantern; Hal would later try to talk her down during a fight with the Reds, but Sinestro killed her just as Hal started getting through.

Billions of years ago, the Manhunters went crazy and killed everything in Sector 666--or so they thought. Five beings survived and formed the terrorist cabal known as the Five Inversions. Over time, they founded TheEmpire of Tears, which was as much fun as its name implies. Eventually the empire fell, and the Five Inversions were crucified on their throneworld. They're the ones who led to Abin Sur crashing on Earth, and seeded the prophecy of the Blackest Night. However, things didn't go as planned; their leader Atrocitus got [[{{Understatement}} mad]], beat the others to death, and used their blood to form the Red central power battery with his BloodMagic and make his own corps.

During the final battle of the Sinestro Corps War, one of the female Guardians of the Universe was burned by the touch of the Anti-Monitor. [[{{Understatement}} This fundamentally changed her]]. She soon began exhibiting suspicious behavior, including goading her fellow Guardians into increasingly dubious decisions regarding the GLC and emotion, manipulating other Corps into conflict with the Green Lanterns, and dispatching agents to locate the corpse of the Anti-Monitor. All the while, she secretly began composing a "Book of the Black", chronicling those who would play a role in the upcoming Blackest Night. It was evenutally revealed that she had been ''killed'' by the Anti-Monitor and was now Nekron's agent in the land of the living. She was destroyed during the Blackest Night by Hal Jordan and the New Guardians, who combined their individual lights into white light, obliterating her.

Per the Blackest Night prophecy, the emergence and conflict among the other colors led to the stirring of the Black Lanterns. Their Power Battery is made from the corpse of the Anti Monitor. Their leader is the Black Hand, a long time Green Lantern enemy and necrophile. They have their own Guardian, Scar, an Oan corrupted during the war with Sinestro. The being behind it all is Nekron, the avatar of Death.

According to Nekron, the natural state of the universe is eternal darkness and death absent of time and that the light of creation and life is but a temporary disturbance of that state. To that end, claims Nekron, death has stirred to restore this "peaceful" state of rest.

During the Blackest Night, the Black Lantern of Ronnie Raymond, aka Firestorm, stood out among his colleagues as one of the most sadistic and twisted, turning the girlfriend of the current Firestorm, Jason Rusch, to salt and forcing Rusch to help. Ronnie was later returned to life by a White Ring, but [[spoiler:the Black Lantern consciousness remained in the Firestorm Matrix, eventually separating from Firestorm and calling itself Deathstorm. The White Entity has deemed Deathstorm the greatest threat to its existence.]]

She got her start as a superhero with Infinity, Inc., a group made up of the teenage progeny of the JusticeSocietyOfAmerica. Years after Infinity disbanded, she met and fell in love with Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, who created a power ring for her to use, making her an honorary Green Lantern. Jade died (like so many of Kyle's girlfriends) saving the Polaris system in ''InfiniteCrisis'', but was resurrected by the White Light at the end of the BlackestNight.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: During the planning stages of ''Infinity, Inc.'', Jerry Ordway thought about including a teenage male Harlequin who was to be mainstream comics' first openly gay character. Because the team already had two GL-related characters (Jade and Obsidian), though, the idea was scrapped.

The being behind it all is Nekron, the avatar of Death.

The son of a funeral parlor owner, William Hand, even at a young age, had an [[{{Understatement}} unhealthy]] [[{{Squick}} obssession]] with death. Atrocitus predicted that he would become a threat to life itself, and tried to murder him, only for Hal Jordan and Sinestro to rescue him. In the aftermath of the battle, William stole Atrocitus' weapon (a rod that could absorb energy and channel it into energy blasts) and became a supervillain, Black Hand.

* NotSoHarmless: He used to be a joke villain whose only power was stealing Green Lantern's energy and redirecting it back at him. Not any more.
