In their first scene together, Phil is introducing Erin to some renowned colleague and subtly chipping away at Erin if she does something even a little out of line according to him. It's clear that he is part of the reason Erin is so self-conscious and neurotic. When she's being evicted from the university, Phil completely ignores her and turns his back to her, refusing to try to stick up for her on the basis of saving his own ass.
