Tartaros is the last of the three guilds of the dreaded Balam Alliance to make an appearance. Several of their members, including their guild master E.N.D., are demons from the Books of Zeref. Founded by Mard Geer Tartaros, the guild's goal is to wipe out all magic on the continent using the Magic Council's ultimate weapon Face in order to awaken E.N.D. and reunite with their creator.

In X791, Tartaros destroys the Magic Council with the help of two Saber Tooth defectors. In retaliation, Fairy Tail declares war and launches an attack on the dark guild's base.

* NoNonsenseNemesis: Rather than waste time torturing Lucy, he just wants to get it over with and kill her. The fact that Jackal and Lummy disagree annoys him, eventually making him [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere stomp off]]. Later he decides to use his curse which eliminates Natsu from battle for the moment along with everyone else. Had Levy not given Gajeel air everyone would had been taken out by the poisonous water.

Both are the largest members of the Nine Demon Gates, possess great physical strength at their disposal and are extremely fast despite their size, and take pride in their power. However, Ezel claims as demons they have no use for honor and dignity, while Torafuzar believes that such things are necessary to their station. Ezel is a BloodKnight who delights in watching his enemies struggle and will drag fights out if he feels he can get more entertainment out of them, while Torafuzar is a NoNonsenseNemesis who prefers to finish fights quickly and takes no pleasure out of torturing his victims
* KarmicDeath: His nickname is "Child Slicer" and is the one who activated Face. He's then defeated by Wendy, a child, and dies in the explosion following Face's self-destruction mechanism.

* ShipperOnDeck: He asked Juvia if she was Gray's "woman", implying that he approves of them being together.

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: We never learn of his fate as one of the only demons left of Tartaros. In the Alvarez Empire arc, however, it is suggested he was possibly either absorbed by Mirajane as part of her Alegria form, or perished together with Zeref, whose death guarantees the deaths of all his Etherious.

* SuperpowerLottery: Another powerful demon to deal with. First he's pretty quick even outside of water, his curse involves creating a huge area of water that's poisoned by carbon, even if you can keep your mouth shut you still can be affected by the poison, and if you can fight back he still can turn his body into steel, making him a pretty strong member for the Nine Demon Gates.

* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Mard Geer doesn't really hold any malice towards humans nor is he interested in taking over the world. He simply desires to fulfill the purpose he was created for which is killing Zeref. He only really comes into conflicts with light guilds due to his lack of empathy as he causes destruction across Fiore without caring what happens to the humans since he regards them as ants.
