History Characters / ExaPico

Ar Tonelico is a JRPG series about a world in the future after humanity has managed to nearly destroy itself twice and is thus confined to living on and around massive towers that appear to float above the surface of the ruined world. The world is populated by a fraction of the current population, who live in scattered small towns. The cast thus consists of the knights, adventurers and [[MagicFromTechnology Reyvateils]] who attempt to keep the world from being ruined yet again.

!!Croix Bartel

Croix is the protagonist of Ar Tonelico II and one of the knights tasked with suppressing rampaging Reyvateils infected with I.P.D. Though a less important position than Lyner's, he is known to be the sort of [[TheAce genius]] that only comes along once in a decade. He's rather calm and collected, though beneath that he can be pretty HotBlooded. He's also rather sarcastic and insulting.

* CluelessChickMagnet: He's very popular with girls, to the point that one of Luca's attacks that voices her inner thoughts expresses irritation that so many girls hang around flirting with him.
* DeadpanSnarker: The man has to comment on every screw up made in synthesis, and even complains about having to complain every time.
* TheGlassesComeOff: During battle, he has to remove his glasses for fear of them shattering. His vision is pretty bad, but he can at least distinguish between friend and foe.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: While fairly plausible (a spear with a massive guard to act as a shield with a machine gun mounting), it has rocket boosters on one end that he uses for his EX attack.
* IWillWaitForYou
** Croix makes what amounts to a ChildhoodMarriagePromise with Luca who agrees to wait until he's a full fledged knight and he comes to take her to Pastalia. [[spoiler:Of course, they break up right before the route splitting event.
** If the player chooses the default ending, [[spoiler:Croix says he will wait for ''Coccona'' to return from her journey to the third tower.]]
* {{Keigo}}: Croix often speaks very formally. In Cloche's ending, she tells him to knock it off.
* LadyAndKnight: Cloche is the lady and Croix is the knight sworn to her at the beginning of the game, though it turns out they had already met in a very classic manner. Should you enter the Cloche route, he will declare his love for her quickly even if you go for one of the other two available endings.
* LoveHurts: To be able to fully devote himself to one of his three primary options, Croix has to journey through their inner world and see every bad or repressed side of them, which frequently puts his life in serious damage. Four levels of Luca's cosmosphere are nearly fatal and Cloche's inner world is a boiling disaster area. Neither compares to the third world, however, which even after completion doesn't cement the relationship.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: If you pursue Jacqli's ending, they'll end up together. She has at least a century to live and possibly more due to what she is, during which she won't even age. Croix has half that.
* NotBloodSiblings: If you do not progress past Level 5 in anyone's cosmosphere in ''Metafalica'', Croix is paired with Cocona, his adopted sister.
* SelectiveObliviousness: He tends to ignore the girls that flirt with him. When pressed on it by Cloche, he basically says something to the effect of 'It would be a problem if [Cynthia] was serious' and leaves it at that.
* StoicSpectacles: Croix tends to be more stoic and sarcastic when his glasses are on, likely because when they're off he's on duty.
* SupportingProtagonist: The game follows Croix's actions but his only connection to the plot is his relationship to Luca and Cloche. The plot revolves around ''them'' as they save the world; Croix just protects them while they do it. This is acknowledged in the Opening theme, where the girls sing a duet and he's a mere cameo.

!!Cloche Leythal Pastalie

Cloche is the Holy Maiden of the current ruling party and is tasked with eventually singing the song Metafalica, which will bring more land for the people to live on. She is rather distant and cold at times due to her upbringing, but she does have a nice side whenever there's something she can do for people.

* ActionGirl: Cloche has a sword (in both her standard and Oldmodern Style costumes), though she doesn't really use it. [[spoiler:Save for her CrowningMomentOfAwesome.]]
* AmazonBrigade: Cloche's I.P.D fanclub is refered to in terminology as an elite bodyguard unit.
* BreakTheCutie: At first her life looks pretty easy, but when the Infelsphere and the deeper parts of her cosmosphere roll around it becomes clear that her life is completely terrible. [[spoiler:She was kidnapped from her family at the age of three, tortured badly enough to trigger TraumaInducedAmnesia and is treated as a figurehead, scapegoat and spokesman for plans she utterly despises. This is, of course, when she's not locked inside constantly with no human interaction beyond being berated.]]
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Cloche, a Maiden, loves her some Gergo products.
* {{Catfight}}: Luca and Cloche twice. The first time is a CrowningMomentOfFunny, but the second one is played much more seriously, with both of them dropping [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech reasons the other sucks]] like bombs [[spoiler:until TheReveal.]]

* TheChosenOne: Cloche, the Holy Maiden. [[spoiler:Or so they think. She ''is'' still a maiden - just a different type.]]
* ChekhovsGunman: [[spoiler:The first scene in the game is Leyka being taken from her family, fueling Luca's quest to find her. During Cloche's first cosmosphere level, we see a ghostly little girl called Alice that looks like a dark haired Leyka. Alice is all her memories of being Leyka.]]
* ClarkKenting: Cloche thinks dressing like a MagicalGirl will hide her identity because that's how magical girl outfits usually work despite the lack of masks etc. Croix snarks at this, privately of course.
* CombatStilettos: Cloche's Victim Pain costume stands out, though there are other examples, including just plain impractically tall shoes.
* CombinedEnergyAttack: Replekia channels the power of singing I.P.D.s to amplify the power of Cloche's song magic. [[spoiler: Likewise, to create Metafalica, Cloche needs to collect their power and pass it on to Luca.]]
* CreepyChild: [[spoiler: Alice in Cloche's Cosmosphere eventually shows herself to be this.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:She was kidnapped and tortured as a child to make her the ideal Maiden. It was harsh enough that she blocked this out badly enough to cause major distortions to her cosmosphere, including the deletion of an entire level.]]
* DemotedToExtra: Both Luca and Cloche get the short end of the stick in Jacqli's Cosmosphere story as they're playing the "heroines of justice" bit, but the story is centered on the DarkMagicalGirl.
* EmotionalPowers: Replekia is probably the most direct expression of the fundamentally emotion fueled nature of reyvateil magic. Rather than an explosive burst, Replekia is like a channeled AngstNuke fueled by the emotions of the I.P.D. infected that slowly level out into something more mellow and hopeful, which is not unlike the process that an I.P.D. is supposed to go through from the period of normalcy to outbreak to dive therapy.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Cloche over the course of the game assembles a huge legion of I.P.D infected fangirls after you've cured them. Their utter devotion powers the song amplifier Replekia.
* FanGirl: Cloche is quite the Gergo fangirl, which is a point of bonding with Cocona. Yes, her tastes match those of an eleven year old girl.
* {{Foil}}: Cloche and Luca. Princess/Pauper, {{Tsundere}} and {{Kawaiiko}}, TsurimeEyes and TaremeEyes, all the way to their hair ornaments; a sun and moon respectively. Heck, if one compares their hair and eye colors, they would notice that they are exact inversions.
* Foreshadowing
** Infel is a pretty blatant bit of foreshadowing. [[spoiler:I.P.D.'s don't have Mind Guardians, so who is Infel?]]
** The third level of the cosmosphere deals with memories, but Cloche's has been completely destroyed and sealed off, necessitating a skip to the fourth level. Hmmmmm.
* GagBoobs: Taking a bath finally showed Jacqli "the difference" in size between herself and Cloche. Luca and Jacqli both have busts under 80cm while Cloche is over 90. Luca even brings it up in the Infelsphere.
* GirlishPigtails: Cloche's Summer Love and Pretty Viola costumes
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: Cloche would like you to know that Croix is her dog and bodyguard, NOTHING ELSE! [[spoiler:It's actually quite contrary to her wishes: She wants to openly admit their relationship, but her position doesn't allow it.]]
* HellBentForLeather: Luca's Assault Pain and Cloche's Victim Pain costumes. Note that these are bondage outfits. Yes, bondage.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Cloche is well hated at one point. She's loved again later on.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: A large portion of the story is spent getting Luca and Cloche to this point as they need to be absolutely inseparable with no secrets between them [[spoiler: to successfully sing Metafalica]]. By the end, they claim there is no closer relationship to be found in the entirety of Metafalss.
* HiveQueen: Cloche becomes this after Reine starts the fan club, though Reine deserves honorary mention since she's the head of the club and Cloche is the focus of it. Cloche is telepathically connected to the I.P.Ds and they can subconsciously feel the feelings of each other. Though she doesn't direct their movements, as much as they adore her, she might as well be.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Cloche defends her actions [[spoiler:regarding the cultivation of I.P.D. individuals]] with the assertion that it's necessary. [[spoiler:In truth, she's been arguing against it for ages, but cannot admit it.]]
* InstantFanclub: Find an I.P.D., capture her and cure her and you're most of the way to yet another fan club member. These are the girls that Cloche's regime has been suppressing, mind you. The more you collect, the more powerful Replekia becomes.
* KillSat: Cloche can cast Replekia from Infel Phira.
* LadyAndKnight: Of the Bright Lady and White Knight variety. Croix is the knight, and Luca and Cloche are the ladies; Phase 1 is about him standing between his childhood friend and his boss.

* SeriousBusiness: Gergo products are this to Cloche, especially when [[ShoddyKnockoffProduct Geugo]] products are brought up in comparison.
* SlaveCollar: Cloche puts a dog collar on Croix in her level 5 as a means to balance her love for him and her public image: nothing wrong with a maiden having a beloved pet, right?
* {{Stripperific}}: Luca and Cloche are usually modestly dressed. Then you see Cloche's Armageddon outfit, and all that goes to hell.
* TheyCallMeMisterTibbs: Inverted. Cloche is painfully aware of her title and this is precisely why she doesn't want her closest friends using it. Everyone else, though, has to call her 'Lady' or 'Holy Maiden'.
* [[spoiler:TraumaInducedAmnesia]]: [[spoiler: Cloche, given that she was taken from her parents at ''three years old'' and experimented on in a daily basis because she was a high level IPD. Her first memories were of her being told her new name.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: An attack of Luca's even says so! It's a combination of three things: One, she's poorly socialized and doesn't know how to behave to equals. Two, anyone she tries to get close to her would be punished. Three, her political image has to be very pure and revered, so she can't let anyone get too close to her.

When Croix dives into Cloche's infosphere, he runs across a strange little girl who acts as Cloche's Mind Guardian. She is rarely willing to share what information she does have.

* LostInTranslation: Infel repeatedly makes bad {{pun}}s. However, these were usually translated literally for the North American release, which turns Croix's [[LamePunResponse responses]] and Infel's embarrassment into strange non sequiturs.

Grammul was soon fired from the Metafalica project and then disappeared. What Infel realized later was that Grammul had created an ([[TechnoBabble long story short]]) imperfect replacement for the sacrifice in the form of Mimimi, the doll he gave to Infel long time ago.]]

!!Luca Trulywaath

Luca is Croix's childhood friend and sort of girlfriend at the beginning of the story, though he never comments on it. She has a distant relationship with her mother. Despite her calm, friendly attitude she has a tendency to rush into things and pursue her own agenda without telling anyone what she's really up to.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: Downplayed. She's still a decent enough person, but she's more manipulative than she lets on. She acts cutesy and ingratiating to make things easier for herself and can be quite aggressive. One of her attacks, Lady Momoyo, channels her inner bitch: She says four or five nice, cute things and then ends it with a really harsh statement that dismisses everything she said before.

* DysfunctionalFamily: She and her mother have quite a strained relationship. Her mother acts distant and aloof apart from brief moments of concern, after which she begins putting distance between the two again. Luca, for her part, has grown rather hostile to Reisha after this.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: When using Dive Therapy to cure I.P.D.s, a lot of them flirt with her. There's also Skycat and Nana, who similarly flirt with her all the time. She's not at all sure how serious they're being.
* TheFakeCutie: In Cloche's Infelsphere, she accuses Luca of pulling a cutesy, shy act to get people to like her. At first, Luca just bears under it, but eventually she snaps and accidentally reveals that it's true. The Sacred Army acts in her name while the Grand Bell that rules the country has declared war on her.

Lyner Barsett is one of the knights pledged to the service of Lady Shurelia, one of the leaders of Platina City. The other known knight is Ayatane. Compared to Ayatane, Lyner is quite rash and impatient. However he appears much more compassionate than the cool, polite and distant Ayatane. Though his domineering father is trying to corral him into politics, Lyner steadfastly refuses and pursues his goal of being a knight. This is a source of tension between the pair throughout the story.

As one of Shurelia's personal knights, Lyner is an unmatched physical combatant. Additionally, he is very talented with grathmelding despite not really understanding how a lot of the more complex stuff he makes actually works.

* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' mess with Reyvateils around Lyner; he will beat your ass so badly his teammates will call him on it. Also averted by Lyner: despite the fact that according to his in-game character bio the two things he hates most are viruses and traitors [[spoiler:instead of seeking revenge on Ayatane for what he's put Platina and various reyvateils through, he works to understand Ayatane's reasons and eventually causes Ayatane to see that the real way to help his mother is to help Lyner.]]

Actually, the two traits are linked: Confidence issues and emotional withdrawal sap the ability to tap into the power source that all Reyvateils draw power from.

Unlike Misha and Aurica, she only hosts a prototype Cosmosphere that has no true connection to her inner thoughts and emotions. Rather, it operates as a sort of game that people of the First Era played.

Ayano is the president of Tenba despite her unique appearance. Unlike Bourd, she's actually an entirely reasonable and ethical individual, but hasn't been keeping an eye on him of late.

Croix is the protagonist of Ar Tonelico II and one of the knights tasked with suppressing rampaging Reyvateils infected with I.P.D. Though a less important position than Lyner's, he is known to be the sort of [[TheAce genius]] that only comes along once in a decade. He's rather calm and collected, though beneath that he can be pretty HotBlooded. He's also rather sarcastic and insulting.

* CluelessChickMagnet: He's very popular with girls, to the point that one of Luca's attacks that voices her inner thoughts expresses irritation that so many girls hang around flirting with him.
* DeadpanSnarker: The man has to comment on every screw up made in synthesis, and even complains about having to complain every time.
* TheGlassesComeOff: During battle, he has to remove his glasses for fear of them shattering. His vision is pretty bad, but he can at least distinguish between friend and foe.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: While fairly plausible (a spear with a massive guard to act as a shield with a machine gun mounting), it has rocket boosters on one end that he uses for his EX attack.

Should you enter the Cloche route, he will declare his love for her quickly even if you go for one of the other two available endings.
* LoveHurts: To be able to fully devote himself to one of his three primary options, Croix has to journey through their inner world and see every bad or repressed side of them, which frequently puts his life in serious damage. Four levels of Luca's cosmosphere are nearly fatal and Cloche's inner world is a boiling disaster area. Neither compares to the third world, however, which even after completion doesn't cement the relationship.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: If you pursue Jacqli's ending, they'll end up together. She has at least a century to live and possibly more due to what she is, during which she won't even age. Croix has half that.
* NotBloodSiblings: If you do not progress past Level 5 in anyone's cosmosphere in ''Metafalica'', Croix is paired with Cocona, his adopted sister.
* SelectiveObliviousness: He tends to ignore the girls that flirt with him. When pressed on it by Cloche, he basically says something to the effect of 'It would be a problem if [Cynthia] was serious' and leaves it at that.
* StoicSpectacles: Croix tends to be more stoic and sarcastic when his glasses are on, likely because when they're off he's on duty.
* SupportingProtagonist: The game follows Croix's actions but his only connection to the plot is his relationship to Luca and Cloche. The plot revolves around ''them'' as they save the world; Croix just protects them while they do it. This is acknowledged in the Opening theme, where the girls sing a duet and he's a mere cameo.

!!Cloche Leythal Pastalie

Cloche is the Holy Maiden of the current ruling party and is tasked with eventually singing the song Metafalica, which will bring more land for the people to live on. She is rather distant and cold at times due to her upbringing, but she does have a nice side whenever there's something she can do for people.

* ActionGirl: Cloche has a sword (in both her standard and Oldmodern Style costumes), though she doesn't really use it. [[spoiler:Save for her CrowningMomentOfAwesome.]]
* AmazonBrigade: Cloche's I.P.D fanclub is refered to in terminology as an elite bodyguard unit.

Despite her calm, friendly attitude she has a tendency to rush into things and pursue her own agenda without telling anyone what she's really up to.

* BareYourMidriff: Her default outfit covers only the bust, leaving her midsection exposed.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Downplayed. She's still a decent enough person, but she's more manipulative than she lets on. She acts cutesy and ingratiating to make things easier for herself and can be quite aggressive. One of her attacks, Lady Momoyo, channels her inner bitch: She says four or five nice, cute things and then ends it with a really harsh statement that dismisses everything she said before.

Replekia does mellow out a bit after the halfway point, however.
