** Episode 47 has him forbid Gohan from getting involved with Piccolo's fight with Cell. When Gohan objects... Well, let's just say that Goku is ''actually aware of his own level of intelligence''. He then points out that the moment Gohan were to leave, the door to the Hyberbolic Time Chamber would inevitably open. Mr. Popo ''agrees with him.''

** Gohan ask Goku why he kept the Hyperbolic Time Chamber a secret when it could have been used to trained for the Saiyans or even the Androids. Goku, however, knew for a fact that none of them probably could have handled it, with Mr. Popo clarifying that case for him, stating that Goku as a kid nearly died in there, so what hope would the other's have?

** In Episode 59, for all that him sending Gohan out against Cell is a terrible idea, he does bring up the valid point that Piccolo kidnapped Gohan to begin with and kind of established a [[StockholmSyndrome creepy relationship]] with him ever since.

* TruerToTheText: The original anime often portrays Goku as a paragon of virtue, which according to Akira Toriyama, is a contrary to his portrayal in the manga. Before ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'', Goku here is portrayed as Akira Toriyama intended: A NiceGuy BloodKnight [[BigEater who loves to eat]] lets his excitement of battle get the better of him and has no proper concept of family.

* HeroWithAnFInGood: When it comes right down to it, Goku ''does'' love his friends and family, and cares about their well-being and the people of the Earth in general. Just... he's also a ChallengeSeeker, BloodKnight, and borderline-psychopathic ManChild who's just GenreSavvy enough to (admittedly, correctly) at some level know he's TheHero, that TheGoodGuysAlwaysWin, and that DeathIsCheap, and so tends to have a somewhat... ok, ''very'' skewed view of events and their stakes, and how his actions impact the people around him.

** For as [[ParentalNeglect many,]] [[LackOfEmpathy many,]] [[InnocentlyInsensitive many]] faults as he has in this series, one of the redeeming aspects of his character is the fact that he's the one person in the cast (outside of possibly Cell) who consistently tries to be nice to [[TheChewToy Yamcha.]] Sure, he only started to doing it because he learned of what happened to Yamcha in the BadFuture, but the fact that only time he ever insults Yamcha is [[InnocentlyInsensitive by accident,]] it means a lot as evidenced by the fact that Yamcha is still around by the time the Androids finally do show up and Yamcha is actually concerned when Goku is suffering from his heart problems.

** Gohan even refers to him as “one of the dumbest, most selfish, most irresponsible people” he knows.

*** Unlike in canon, Goku doesn't [[WouldHurtAChild punch Gohan]] to prevent him from trying to save Piccolo after Imperfect Cell nearly kills him.

* AmazonChaser: His wife Chi-Chi is the strongest woman on the planet. She also has more stamina than him in bed which he takes as a challenge in Episode 56. He didn't understand it was in order to have a baby.

* BatmanGambit: Why, yes, ''[[IdiotHero Goku]]'' of all people actually manages to pull one off. [[spoiler:By acting as the campion of of Earth against various threats, like King Piccolo, Raditz, Vegeta, and Freeza, Goku came to realize that if he didn't die in battle, old age would eventually claim him, which would leave Earth unprotected against the elements of the galaxy. This lead him to that decide that the whole Cell situation could work as a way to coax Gohan into becoming his successor as the new protector of Earth, to make sure his adoptive home would remain safe after his death. To make sure Gohan would be strong enough to carry this burden, he needed Cell to pose a serious threat for his son to overcome and prove himself, so he arranged for Vegeta and Trunks to fight Cell first, knowing that one (or both) of them would probably screw it up somehow, which would allow Cell the opportunity to achieve his perfect form. He also made Cell postpone his plan to kill everyone after defeating Vegeta, by issuing a challenge of his own to him prior. Goku knew that he himself wouldn't pass up on such a challenge, and neither would Cell, since Cell had a part of his personality embedded in him. All that said, he did make ''one'' glaring miscalculation though; he had assumed Gohan would be happy for the chance to take up the mantle as Earth's protector, believing that his son enjoyed fighting just as much as himself. Gohan didn't, and he had completely overlooked that unlike pretty much everybody else.]]

* BizarreAlienBiology: Aside from the usual quirks of Saiyan biology - his Ozuru and Super Saiyan forms, the Zenkai Boosts, and unchanging hair - Goku also sweats purple when he eats grapes... or anything grape-flavored for that matter.

** In season one, he wasn't as fight-happy as he would in later seasons where he even tells Vegeta rhey don't even need to fight. The later seasons makes him a BloodKnight who's thrilled to get into a fight.

** Despite frequently neglecting his son, whenever Gohan's in danger, about to be killed or on the verge of death, Goku [[LetsGetDangerous gets serious]].

* AdaptationalIntelligence: He gets a minor refund on the lost intelligence levels, but it's not much. In canon, Goku outright forgot to take the medicine Future Trunks gave him to stop the heart virus from killing him once the Androids arrived. Here, he does remember to take it, but the benefits of that are negated due to them being grape flavored and his allergy to grapes, still leaving him bedridden until Cell attacks.
** He has some levels of Chessmaster, as revealed in Episode 60. He set up Vegeta allowing Cell to become perfect and Cell setting up the Cell Games so that Gohan could take up his mantle and the world wouldn't have to depend on him so much. The issue there is that Gohan doesn't want to fight anyone and Goku didn't think of that, which leads him to nipping the problem in the bud entirely and staying dead after the battle with Cell so that people wouldn't threaten Earth. He also has at least enough self awareness to know that setting everything up so Gohan could deal with everything was wrong.
