* AscendedExtra: Riley gets to do stuff outside of Hypnos once it's revealed that she's Yamaki's girlfriend. Tally, however, is still just "that blond that works at Hypnos".

* {{Expy}}: Bears a slight resemblance to Yasuo Iwakura, father of the eponymous protagonist in ''Anime/SerialExperimentsLain'' (which, incidentally, was also directed by Creator/ChiakiKonaka).

* {{Expy}}: Of the MenInBlack that stalk Lain in ''Anime/SerialExperimentsLain''.

The powers of the sovereign include overseeing the Light of Evolution (Calumon's power), and it is this capacity that starts the plot of the season.

A giant Red Phoenix. He sent the Devas into the real world in order to fight the humans, and then later has Calumon imprisoned in the belief that he will help the Digimon evolve fast enough to face the "True Enemy".

A giant Blue Eastern Dragon. He believes that it is digivolution that brought about the True Enemy. He saved the tamers from Zhuqiaomon's attack. Also, the only of the Sovereign to have appeared in another series, Anime/DigimonAdventure02.

* HeelRealization: Tally gets hit with one ''hard'' when Juggernaut is fired as she and Riley are treated to the wonderful sounds of thousands of terrified Digimon being dragged in and annihilated, tearing off her visor and begging for someone to make the sound stop.

!! The Sovereign / Holy Beasts

A giant phoenix and one of the four Holy Beasts. He sent the Devas into the real world in order to fight the humans, and then later has Culumon imprisoned in the belief that Culumon will help the Digimon evolve fast enough to face the "True Enemy".

* JerkassGods: He has no qualms sending all of his Deva subordinates to go on a rampage in the human world just to bring Culumon to him. He also does not object when his subordinate Caturamon manipulates Impmon to strike a deal with him, and he did give Impmon the ability to evolve into Beelzemon after all (meaning that he indirectly killed Jeri's Leomon and flat-out didn't care).

A giant tiger and one of the four Holy Beasts. He was the last to be seen, as he was the first known to be confronting the True Enemy directly.

* TheVoiceless: He never says a word in the series.

A giant two-headed turtle and one of the four Holy Beasts. In the DarkerAndEdgier latter part of the series, he brings a little bit of comic relief. At least, one head does.

* PowersDoTheFighting: When the Tamers confront him, he doesn't even move an inch and just burns all of their Digimon with fire. It's not until [=MegaGargomon=] sinks him down once that he starts moving.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: Ultimately, it's Shibumi, with a bit of help from Azulongmon, who manages to convince Zhuqiaomon to stop wasting effort attacking humanity and recognize the Tamers as powerful allies against their common enemy, the D-Reaper.

* GiantFlyer: He dwarfs the building sized Zhuqiaomon. Understandable, since Zhuqiaomon is based on a sparrow, and Azulongmon is a ''dragon''.

* MrExposition: He provides some of the initial exxpository info about the D-Reaper in front of Zhuqiaomon and several other Tamers.

* ShockAndAwe: His attacks are all electrical based.

* TheWorfEffect: He is stated to be the strongest of the four sovereigns, but is quickly defeated by the D-Reaper. ''Quickly'' being a relative term... Against the ''D-Reaper, just by himself'', he held the line pretty damn well. He also ''survived'', which is more than about 60 percent of the Digital World can say.

* DoesNotLikeShoes: For wearing a hospital pajama and such.

* UnwittingInsigatorOfDoom: He ends up setting the stage for the final arc when he gives Impmon the ability to digivolve into Beelzemon: This results in Leomon’s death and Jeri’s subsequent depression and ultimately being used to power the D-Reaper, resulting in it nearly destroying both the human world and the Digital World…The latter of which was what Zhuqiamon was trying to prevent in the first place.

* MrExposition: Serves as this to explain what was going on to the tamer's parents. Latter plays this role again on an television news report.

* ConspiracyRedemption: After Yamaki's HeelFaceTurn, the organization becomes devoted to helping the Tamers get home, and latter battle the D-Reaper.

* GiantFlyer: He dwarfs [=MegaGargomon=], who's the size of a small skyscraper!

* FeatheredFiend: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed.]] He's certainly a demonic-looking bird, but he's actually a WellIntentionedExtremist with a bad case of FantasticRacism.
