* IrrationalHate: According to Yasue, Gozo hated detectives to the core because he thought that detectives have nothing better to do than sneaking around looking for other people's flaws. Gozo's hatred toward detectives was so irrational that he prohibited every member of Hatamoto family from reading detective novels or watching detective TV shows.

* BigScrewedUpFamily: Not as big as others, but pretty fucked up. Yasue and Chairman Nagato were pretty nice persons, but Mitsuaki, Hideomi and Nobuko have... ''issues''.

[[folder:People of the Kawanakajima Murder Case]]
!!People involved in the Kawanakajima serial murders (Mamoru Saegusa, Shinsuke Akiyama, Shouji Kano, Shigeru Takeda, [[Characters/DetectiveConanPoliceOfficersOutsideOfTokyoAndOsaka Hyoue Kuroda]], [[spoiler: Tsuyako Aburakawa]])
--> Mamoru Saegusa is voiced by: Tadashi Miyazawa
--> Shinsuke Akiyama is voiced by: Kousuke Okano
--> Shouji Kano is voiced by: Kiyonobu Suzuki
--> Shigeru Takeda is voiced by: Shin Goto
--> Hyoue Kuroda is voiced by: Yukimasa Kishino

After the Kamaitachi case was closed, Kogoro declines to join Yamamura, Heiji, and Kazuha, as he, driven by interest on a TV drama [[IdolSinger Yoko Okino]] starred in, takes Ran and Conan to a visit to the Old Battlefield of Kawanakajima. As he and Ran try to remember the strategy Kansuke Yamamoto used in the fourth battle, the Nagano trio arrives, also ostensibly taking a detour to the site. Their fellow officers Mamoru Saegusa, Shinsuke Akiyama, and Shouji Kano, arrive not much later, and the rest of the cast learn that their squad leader Shigeru Takeda is yet to show up. As Yui tours everyone around the battlefield, Yamato spots a floating head on a nearby river, and it turns out to be Takeda's...

* AppleOfDiscord: The killer [[InvokedTrope invokes]] this between Yamato and Morofushi for the purpose of [[spoiler: framing the former for the murders. It turns out the two made it seem like they are arguing to trick Akiyama into thinking his plan had a chance of working.]]
* BatmanGambit:
** The scenario described in [[spoiler: HeKnowsTooMuch below?]] Yes, the culprit deliberately let him know the truth so he could kill him.
** [[spoiler: Kuroda and Morofushi seriously treating Yamato as the prime suspect]] was meant to lower the culprit's guard and draw him out.
* CallingCard: The "X" mark on the victims' foreheads which resemble woodpecker claws, representing [[spoiler: the Woodpecker Society, a group of [[DirtyCop Dirty Cops]] referenced by Yoshiro Torada. Additionally, it's also a reference to the actual ThemeNaming behind the members' names - X being the 24th letter of the alphabet and there being [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-Four_Generals_of_Takeda_Shingen 24 prominent generals who served under Takeda Shingen.]] Furthermore, it is where Akiyama's sister was shot.]]
* DirtyCop: [[spoiler: The Woodpecker Society/X sold the weapons they confiscated, and Akiyama discovered that the gun used to kill his sister was sold by the group.]]
* FakingTheDead: [[spoiler: Akiyama faked a decapitation using Takeda's headless body and a fake head from his family's salon. He did this to further pin suspicion on Yamato, who set off on his own and was already the prime suspect by that point.]]
* HeKnowsTooMuch: Kano discovers who the culprit was and his motive. He gets strangled for his troubles.
* ItsPersonal: The case for Yamato, as the person Takeda shot and killed nine years ago was his childhood friend.
* TheMaidenNameDebate: Shouji Kano took up his current surname when he got married; it was originally Tsuchiya.
* OffWithHisHead:
** 12 pages in the manga and we are treated to a rather [[SarcasmMode lovely]] sequence of Shigeru's head floating in the river. Downplayed in the anime version, where it was less graphic.
** [[spoiler: Akiyama gets this fate as his neck was tied to a moving car that fell off a cliff. [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] - see FakingTheDead above.]]
* ShedTheFamilyName: Aburakawa was Shinsuke's original surname, then he took in Akiyama (his mother's maiden name) as his last name after his parents divorced.
* ShipperOnDeck: Mamoru accuses Yamato of going on a date with Yui while on-duty.
* SlashedThroat: Takeda was killed this way in the beginning.
* ThemeNaming: Outside of Kuroda, Uehara, and Morofushi, the police officers' names contain some reference to the generals killed in action during the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima. [[spoiler: That specific theme is a RedHerring, as their names are more appropriately themed after the Twenty-Four Generals of Takeda Shingen.]]
* WoundedGazelleGambit: [[spoiler: One of the more technically complex examples, as Akiyama faked a ''decapitation.'']]
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler: Akiyama's sister]] was killed by a stray bullet when Yamato's drug-addled childhood friend ran amok.

In a case also notorious for its NightmareFuel, Masumi is invited by her then-unknown middle brother's high school friends to investigate strange phenomena in a villa, in which she tags along Conan, Ran, and Sonoko. When the latter two mention that they spotted a red woman lurking in the forest, Tamami, Sumika, Masaie, and Jinsuke all express shock and tell the story of a murder case involving the Red Woman from 15 years ago and the disappearance and eventual death of their friend Sakoto three years later. When Sumika finds the bathtub filled with tomatoes, Conan and Masumi rush to investigate and pull out Masaie's lifeless body from the sea of fruits.

* FreakOut: Ayaka has one when she hears that Ran and Kazuha saw the silhouette of the red UsefulNotes/TakedaShingen armor the previous night.

* HostileWeather: Yoshiro was killed by a tornado...[[LeftForDead well, mostly.]]
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Kuroto and Akira are known to practically never miss in horseback archery. Hell, the former did not even miss for ''ten'' straight years, at least until his final stint at the festival. Akira hadn't missed for ''five.'' [[spoiler: This is also the reason for Kuroto's murder and the attempt on Akira's life; nobody would place a bet because of their ridiculous skills and this posed a threat on Tatsue's gambling business.]]

* ManOnFire: [[spoiler: Shigetsugu. Since he was electrocuted and burned, everyone initially assumed he represented "fire" in ''Fuurinkazan.'' This turns out to be ''another'' RedHerring as his death actually stood for ''rai'' (lightning); Akira was supposed to stand for ''ka'' (fire) until Conan, Heiji, Yui, and Yamato thwarted Tatsue's attempt on his life.]]
* TheMaidenNameDebate: Koji took up the Tatsuo surname when he married into the family. Curiously enough, his wife was never mentioned in any of the two episodes.
* PastExperienceNightmare: Yoshiro having these and muttering about [[spoiler: "the sound, the flash..." led Yui to conclude that there was a fifth person involved in Kuroto's death.]]
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Kuroto was a beloved figure in his hometown; when he went missing, the entire village searched for him 24/7 over the course of a week until Yui found his emaciated body.
* TheReveal: [[spoiler: Tatsue committed the five murders and attempted a sixth (Akira); while the murders were indeed based on the ''Fuurinkazan'' battle standard, the term was incomplete and she mentions that it's actually ''Fuurinkazaninrai,'' which includes the phrases "Be as hard to know as the shadow" and "Move as fast as lightning." Those omitted portions stood for the murders of Kuroto and Shigetsugu (the latter initially thought to represent "fire" and was also thought to be suicide at first). The reason she committed the murders was that Kai's ImprobableAimingSkills threatened her gambling business which was centered on the horseback archery in the annual festival. The other four were murdered since they witnessed Kuroto's death, and likely [[HeKnowsTooMuch saw too much.]]]]
* ShipperOnDeck: Kuroto appears to have shipped Yui and Kansuke when he was still alive.
* ShoutOut: The murders were themed on ''Fuurinkazan'', a battle standard used by UsefulNotes/TakedaShingen during the UsefulNotes/SengokuPeriod which was in turn based on Passages 17 to [[spoiler: 19]] of the seventh chapter of Literature/TheArtOfWarSunTzu.
* TreasureHunter: Shigetsugu, Akira, Yoshiro, Ayaka, and Koji were said to have looked for UsefulNotes/TakedaShingen's legendary lost treasure. [[spoiler: Downplayed for Shigetsugu and Ayaka, who did not react to the presence of centipede corpses beside the bodies of the other two.]]

In the opening scene of "The Twenty Year Old Murderous Intent: The Symphony Serial Murder Case," a man named Saizo Kano gets shot and falls down to the sea by what appears to be his accomplices. Flash forward to the present, Conan, Ran, and Mouri solve a puzzle
from twenty a newspaper ad, earning them an all-expenses-paid trip to [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonin_Islands Ogasawara]] aboard a ship. They then encounter Toji Samezaki, a former colleague of Kogoro's, and the other winners as well. Seemingly unrelated at first, things take a turn for the worse when one of the passengers is found burned, and it turns out nearly all of the passengers have something to do with a robbery from 20 years symphony ago and that the missing Saizo Kano may still be alive all this time...

[[spoiler: This was also a message to the remaining accomplices, who by this point had long changed their appearances. Reading the characters for Masaru Furukawa sideways turns it into "Saizo Kano," with Kujirai unaware of this despite having created the ploy. The other passengers (save for Conan, Ran, Kogoro, and Heiji) knew this beforehand, and boarded the ship in search for answers on the heist from 20 years ago.]]
* PuttingTheBandBackTogether: The gang that committed the robbery from 20 years ago reunite in the ship, ostensibly to celebrate the expiration of their StatuteOfLimitations of their 400-million yen heist.
