[[folder: Deltoran Royal Family]]

Descendants of Deltora's first king, Adin.

!!Lief

-->Voiced by: Ryosuke Sakamaki (Japanese), Cole Howard (English)

Lief was raised as a blacksmith's son in the run-down city of Del after the invasion. Hot-headed and impatient at the start of the series, all he wanted to do was go out and explore the city. On the night of his sixteenth birthday, he leaves on his father's quest to restore the Belt of Deltora, the only thing that can save their land and the heir from the tyranny of the Shadow Lord.

* {{Adorkable}}: Lief is extremely inept when dealing with women as seen from his encounter with Neridah.
* AngerBornOfWorry: When Prin is almost killed by a Dread Gnome's poisoned arrow while attempting to fly to Dread Mountain, Lief fears for her and yells at her for putting herself in danger like that. It is something Lief had sworn never to do after having experienced it from Barda himself in the Shifting Sands, and he is apologizes to Prin afterward for it.
** Whenever Lief returned home to the forge in Del after dark and took risks, both Endon and Sharn would be furious as they were so frightened for him. Lief recalls this in ''Dread Mountain'' when he has his own AngerBornOfWorry moment.
* BadassAdorable: The youngest and second shortest of the three heroes, but don't think that means he's weaker.
* BadassBookworm: Is very educated for his social standing and often outsmarts his enemies rather than out-muscling them.
* BadassInDistress: In ''Cavern of the Fear'' he is held captive by Granous in the Os-Mine Hills alongside Barda, and is forced to take part in a sadistic game.
* BadassNormal: Can hold his own in a fight, while using a sword.
* TheBlacksmith: He was his father's apprentice. [[spoiler: In the second series, he is skilled enough as a smith to make a replica of the Belt of Deltora.]]
* BodyHorror: After having Bede's special mask ripped off his face, Lief obtains some very horrific-looking scars.
* CannotSpitItOut: In regards to Jasmine. This is a result of his awkwardness with women.
* {{Determinator}}: And how! He's survived against Ols, Grey Guards, Vraals, and countless other monsters. He's been cut, bruised, burned, and nearly eaten by a carnivorous plant. How he and Barda and Jasmine managed to survive in Deltora day-to-day is anyone's guess.
* DangerousSixteenthBirthday: He found out that his father had lived in the palace, that the beggar by the gate was actually a competent fighter, and that he had to set off on a quest to find the one true king all on his birthday.
* FarmBoy: He started out as a blacksmith's apprentice.
* FireForgedFriends: With Barda and Jasmine.
* FisherKing: The bloodline of [[spoiler: Adin wielding the Belt of Deltora keeps the land safe from invasion]]. To a lesser extent, Lief's dedication to the country results in him cleaning up a lot of its problems.
* GreenEyedMonster: Not really noticeable in the anime (Which appears to favor Dain and Jasmine), but many interactions Dain had with Jasmine led him to silently fume. He got over it eventually, but by then, [[spoiler:Dain had shown his true colours as a Grade 3 Ol]].
* GuileHero: A little zigzagged, he can think on his feet to trick enemies but he gets played for a fool himself just as much.
* TheGoodKing: After the Shadow Lord's defeat Lief goes on to rule Deltora long and wisely. He plays a large part in helping the kingdom recover from the longs years of tyranny.
* HappilyMarried: To Jasmine after the end of the third series.
* HeroicBSOD: In ''Dread Mountain'' he discovers that his parents have been imprisoned by the Shadow Lord who suspects them of helping the heroes who are restoring the Belt of Deltora. He immediately wants to return to Del, but soon realises with Barda's help that the quest must go on, for it is the only thing that would free Deltora of the Shadow Lord.
** In ''The Sister of the South'' Lief has a major BSOD when he believes that he's made a mistake and that the 'Toran Plague' is real. He is heartbroken at the thought that he has doomed his friends and family. He even tries to take of the Belt in his misery but is unable to.
* HeroicLineage: Is a descendant of [[spoiler: Adin.]]
* HeroesPreferSwords: Lief was given a lethal sword for his birthday which was forged by his father. It becomes the weapon of his choice for the entire series.
* HotBlooded: Extremely so at the beginning of the first series, but slowly comes out of it as the quest goes on. After he becomes King he is more level-headed, and with good reason.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Barda, Doom and most of the people he meets on his travels around Deltora.
* InvisibilityCloak: His mother [[spoiler: Sharn]] sews a cloak for him that conceals the wearer, as a birthday gift.
* ItsAllMyFault: Lief blames himself strongly for [[spoiler: Josef's death in the third series, thinking that if only he had realised Paff's treachery and looked out for Josef more instead of dismissing him as senile and leaving Del to destroy the Sisters, then it would not have happened the way it did.]]
* HealingHands: Lief can use different gems can relieve various ailments, including venom, poison, disease, and blindness.
* TheHero: He's the protagonist of the story, and sent by his parents to restore the Belt of Deltora and rid the kingdom of the Shadow Lord.
* HoldingBackThePhlebotinum: Lief fears the power of the great opal and uses it a total of ''three times'' throughout the entire story, and only once with the intention of seeing the future.
* JustAKid: Averted, for the most part.
* KingIncognito: In later books.
* MarryForLove: What Lief resolves to do (and eventually does do) with [[spoiler: Jasmine.]]
* MeaningfulName: 'Lief' means 'heir' and 'loved', and he is both.
* ModestRoyalty: Prefers to live and dress as a blacksmith as opposed to a king.
* NearDeathExperience: In ''City Of the Rats'', while distracting the guardian monster Reeah from Jasmine and Barda as they try to take the opal from it, Lief is nearly eaten by Reeah when the serpent gets tired of him. Jasmine slits Reeah's throat, which causes Lief to fall several stories to the ground and break all the bones in his body. He is thankfully saved by the healing nectar from the Lilies of Life and is back on his feet in no time.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler: In ''The Sister of the South'' Lief manages to defeat the fourth Sister with the help of the topaz dragon Fidelis. Everyone rejoices. And then Lief finds out that it was all for nothing, for the destruction of the last Sister was primed to release the Grey Tide, which would sweep over all of Deltora, destroying everything that remained. He then has to tell this to everyone else, who look on in horror.]]
* PragmaticHero: Though very impulsive and hot-headed in the beginning, during the quest for the gems Lief learns to think pragmatically and plan carefully. It's important in a world where even plants can kill you. He gets even more so after he becomes King.
* RagsToRoyalty: He is the [[spoiler: heir to Deltora]].
* RightfulKingReturns: At the end of [[spoiler: ''Return to Del''.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: He along with Barda and Jasmine defeat all of the Shadow Lord's plans and save Deltora three times.
* SecretLegacy: He had no clue that he was [[spoiler: Adin's heir]].
* TrueCompanions: With Barda and Jasmine.
** In the later series, with Manus, Gla-Thon, Marilen, Zeean, Lindal, Ranesh, Doom, the Kin (most notably Prin), Gers and Steven.
* TheSmartGuy: Lief uses his brains over his brawn wherever possible.
* UnwittingPawn: During the second and third series, everyone is at risk of being a pawn. By listening to the recording in the crystal and finding the first part of the map of the Four Sisters, Lief was playing into the Shadow Lord's hands as the Shadow Lord knew that if he destroyed the crystal he would find out about the Four Sisters and set out to destroy them, thereby releasing the Grey Tide as a result. Lief is ''horrified'' when he realises this.
* WeakButSkilled: Lief's general fighting style. Since he's smaller than most of his opponents he tends to use speed and cunning to defeat them, rather than strength.
* WeaponOfChoice: A sword, namely the one his father made for him for his birthday.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: As he was a street kid for most of his childhood, Lief is wise in the ways of his people and the dangers that lurk in Del at night.

!!Endon
Lief's father, and the King of Deltora before Lief. He was close friends with Jarred as a child.
* AngerBornOfWorry: Whenever Lief came home after dark and took risks, both Endon and Sharn would be furious as they were so frightened for him.
* BabiesEverAfter: Between the prologue and Part II of ''The Forests of Silence'' Endon and Sharn have Lief.
* BaitAndSwitch: Endon, Sharn, Jarred and Anna switched identities to protect the royal family. Lief and Barda have no knowledge of this, for obvious reasons.
* TheBlacksmith: Trains as one as the prince of Deltora, [[spoiler: which he later puts into practice after assuming Jarred's identity.]]
* CharacterDeath: Endon is killed by [[spoiler: Fallow near the end of Return to Del.]]
* ChildhoodFriends: With Jarred. They were like brothers to each other.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Endon's parents are both dead at the beginning of the series; the death of his father King Alton results in him becoming King at a young age.
* {{Determinator}}: He never gives up in his mission to right the wrongs he has done and free Deltora from the Shadow Lord's rule.
* TheDutifulSon: He was described by Jarred to be very dutiful.
* HappilyMarried: To Sharn.
* ItsAllMyFault: Endon blames himself for the Shadow Lord's invasion of Deltora and his people's suffering, thinking that if he had been a stronger king and had listened to Jarred, it wouldn't have happened.
* KingIncognito: For the sixteen years of the Shadow Lord's rule, Endon is disguised as a blacksmith, which is ironic, since the first King of Deltora was also a blacksmith.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Endon's basic reaction to the loss of the Belt and the Shadow Lord's invasion.
* MyGreatestFailure: Endon's greatest failure is not realising in time that Deltora is in danger of being invaded by the Shadow Lord and reclaiming the Belt of Deltora to prevent this.
* NearDeathExperience: Had a run-in with a falling tree which left him with a stiff leg and a limp.
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: To Sharn.
* PuppetKing: During his seven year reign, due to the Rule rendering him reliant on the evil Chief Advisor Prandine, who is a servant of the Shadow Lord.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: While in hiding plans out the quest for the gems with Sharn and prepares Lief for it.
* StartingANewLife: After the Shadow Lord's invasion, Endon and his family settle into a new life in the forge, taking on the identities of Jarred and Anna.
* TheOnlyOneITrust: No matter what, Jarred is always there for Endon and is always willing to help him. On the night of the Shadow Lord's invasion Endon sends for Jarred because he finally realises this and has no one else to turn to. Endon even tells this to Jarred word for word:
---> '''"For the sake of our old friendship, I beg you to forgive the past. You are the only one I can trust. Please help us!"'''
* SecretIdentity: During the dark years he is forced to hide his true identity so that he and is family won't get killed, and [[spoiler: pretends to be his close friend Jarred.]]

!!Sharn
Endon's wife and Lief's mother. She known for her quick wit and gift for sewing.
* AFriendInNeed: Doesn't hesitate to give her old friend Amarantz of the Pottery a job as a palace cook when the older woman comes asking for help.
* AngerBornOfWorry: Whenever Lief came home after dark and took risks, both Endon and Sharn would be furious as they were so frightened for him.
* BabiesEverAfter: Between parts one and two of The Forests of Silence, Sharn gives birth to Lief.
* ColdBloodedTorture: It is implied that this happened to Sharn after she and Endon were arrested and imprisoned in the Del Palace dungeons.
* {{Determinator}}: Sharn nevers gives up hope that the Shadow Lord will be defeated one day and her family will come out of hiding. She is described as a very brave and determined woman, and Jarred comes to admire her because of this.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: Amarantz dies in Sharn's arms after [[spoiler: swallowing one of her poisoned cakes.]]
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Sharn has the appearance of a Toran, who all have pale skin and dark hair.
* HappilyMarried: To Endon.
* HiddenDepths: At first she seems to be a clueless painted doll, but she's really smart, brave and quick-witted.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Amarantz of the Pottery, who is described as almost elderly, some members of the Resistance and Jasmine, [[spoiler: Doom's daughter.]]
* ModestRoyalty: Even after returning to the palace and being known as the King's mother Sharn still chooses to dress as a blacksmith's wife. The only jewelry she chooses to wear is the locket her husband gave her long ago.
* NearDeathExperience: Almost dies of the 'Toran Plague' in the final book. She only recovers once is it ascertained that the so-called plague is actually poison and emeralds are sent to her to help her recover.
* NiceGirl: She is kind and warm to anyone who speak to her.
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: To Endon. It's amazing how perfect they are for each other.
* PregnantBadass: During the first book's prologue, she manages to kill Prandine, the Chief Advisor, by tipping him out the window of the tower in which the Belt of Deltora was kept. She also manages to convince Endon to listen to Jarred, something which Jarred was never able to do. And all this while she is heavily pregnant.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: She and Endon plan the quest for the gems and prepare Lief for it. After the Shadow Lord's defeat Sharn helps Deltorans recover from the Shadow Lord's rule, and becomes well-loved and respected by the people because of it. In Dragons of Deltora she travels to Tora to support relations between the two great cities, and when she returns serves soup to the poor and needy, which unfortunately results in the creation of the Toran Plague myth as [[spoiler: Sharn was poisoned soon after.]]
* SilkHidingSteel: She may look weak, but really she is quick-witted and strong, and as capable as the men at foiling an enemy.
* StartingANewLife: Sharn and Endon begin a new life in the forge after the Shadow Lord's invasion. After the return of the monarchy Sharn returns to live in the palace with Lief, Jasmine, Doom and Barda, and takes on the title 'Lady Sharn'.
* TeamMom: By the second series she has befriended many of Lief's friends, including members of the resistance and the Torans.
* TextileWorkIsFeminine: Sharn is said to be a gifted seamstress, and well able to sew magical garments [[spoiler: such as the cloak she sews for Lief.]] It is something she inherited from her Toran ancestors, as Torans are well known for their talent in sewing.

!!Anna (II)
The daughter of Lief and Jasmine. She is named after Jasmine's mother Anna.
* DeadGuyJunior: She is named after Jasmine's deceased mother Anna.

!!Endon (II)
Lief and Jasmine's son, and twin to Jarred. He is named after Lief's father Endon.
* DeadGuyJunior: He is named after Lief's father Endon.

!!Jarred (II)
Lief and Jasmine's son, and twin to Endon. He is named after Jasmine's father Jarred.
* DeadGuyJunior: He is named after Jasmine's father Jarred, [[spoiler: who is in fact still alive but no longer uses his birth name]].

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Del Tribe Members]]

People of Deltora's southeast. Famously the native tribe of the royal family, the city of Del serves as Deltora's capital.

!!Barda

-->Voiced by: Yuusaku Yara (Japanese), Tom Edwards (English)

The former [[KnightInShiningArmor palace guard of Del]]. Before the Shadow Lord took control of Deltora, Barda's mother Min overheard the Shadow Lord's plot to take control of Deltora. Scared, she told the news to King Endon, who believed she was mistaken and had merely been dreaming. Several hours later she was murdered for what she knew. Afraid for his life, Barda fled the palace and found shelter in the forge, and fell asleep there.

When he awoke, Barda stumbled upon Jarred and Anna hurrying the king and queen away. When he approached them, Jarred knocked Barda out because he was afraid that he was an enemy.

For the next sixteen years, Barda disguised himself as a beggar to discover information vital to the quest. Upon Lief's sixteenth birthday, Barda reveals himself to Lief, and the quest for the gems begins.

* AdultFear: Barda is told by his mother about something evil which Prandine is planning; an hour later Min is dead and Barda realises that he will be next. He ends up fleeing from the palace to save his life.
* AngerBornOfWorry: When Lief is separated from his companions in the Shifting Sands, and is later rescued by Barda and Jasmine from a sand-beast, Barda blows it at Lief as he was so afraid for him.
* BabiesEverAfter: After the third series Barda and Lindal have six children, all identical and taller than their parents.
* BadassCape: Has one as a palace guard.
* BadassInDistress: In ''Return to Del'', he, Jasmine and Doom are being held captive and are about to be executed by Fallow on the Place of Punishment. Luckily Lief swoops in (almost literally) and saves the day.
* BadassNormal: Barda has no supernatural powers at all, but he is a palace guard, who are the most powerful fighters in Deltora.
* BearsAreBadNews: His nickname is Barda the Bear.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Between Barda and Lindal in the third series. It gets resoved eventually.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Though he technically isn't a brother, Barda has this in regards to Lief and Jasmine.
* TheBigGuy: One of the strongest characters in the series who isn't a [[BloodKnight Jalis]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Very much so.
* {{Determinator}}: Never gives up during the quest for the gems. In ''The Maze of the Beast'', when Lief and Jasmine believe the quest lost because the pirates are thought to have both the amethyst and the Belt, Barda tells them otherwise, saying that he'd rather get the gem from the pirates than the Glus in the Maze, and that they can't be sure that they can trust a map which an Ol showed them.
* {{Flashback}}: One episode of the anime tells his story in the form of flashbacks.
%%* TheFettered
* HappilyMarried: To Lindal after the end of the final series.
* HatesBeingTouched: Barda is very uncomfortable at being hugged by Lief and Jasmine in ''The Maze of the Beast'', though he doesn't pull away from them.
* HumbleHero: He is not too proud to beg for food and money if he has to.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Lief and Jasmine.
* ItsAllMyFault: Barda feels guilt at not being there to help his fellow guards when the Shadow Lord invaded.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Barda was one before the start of the series.
* [[LongHairedPrettyBoy Long Haired Pretty Man]]: In the anime at least, Barda is depicted with long hair and can be very attractive.
* MissingMom: Barda's mother, Min, was killed just before the Shadow Lord's invasion by Prandine.
* NearDeathExperience: Several. In the first book, Barda is stabbed in the chest by Gorl and definitely would have died if not for the nectar from the Lilies of Life. In the sixth book he falls into the River Tor (which is infested with killer worms) while battling pirates on the River Queen, and he himself says later that it is a miracle he didn't get bitten. And in ''Return to Del'' he falls into a gripper field while the trio are escaping into the woods to hide from the Grey Guards, and is severely wounded. Then in Withick Mire Dain attempts to murder him through poison (as he has realised that Barda is a major threat to his plans). Thankfully, Lief realises in the nick of time what is happening and uses the Belt to heal Barda.
* NervesOfSteel: Barda is usually a tower of strength, and never gives up on anything. [[spoiler: This provides a clue for recognising that the Barda Lief and Jasmine meet after the pirate attack is an Ol, as the real Barda would never have given up or lost hope.]]
* OfficialCouple: With [[spoiler: Lindal]] by the end of the third series.
* PragmaticHero: Barda is always seen trying to come up with a plan before taking action.
%%* SculptedPhysique
* TeamDad: He assumes this role for Lief and Jasmine early on in the series.
* TeethClenchedTeamWork: Barda with Lindal in ''Dragon's Nest''.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Lief's parents, and later to Lief.
* WeaponOfChoice: A sword. Unsurprising since Barda was once a palace guard and had been taught to wield one when he began training.

!!Jasmine

-->Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki (Japanese), Laura Rushfeldt (English)

A wild girl with emerald-green eyes who grew up alone in the Forests of Silence. Her parents were captured by Grey Guards when she was seven, and she was raised by the forest from then on. She can understand the language of the trees and many animals, and possesses great agility and sharp senses, including photographic memory. Fending for herself alone since childhood, she has trouble understanding some social customs.

* ActionGirl: And how. She's small but strong and agile, and wields a dagger with precision. [[spoiler: Doom finds that put painfully when he attacks the trio in the dark in the Rithmere Champion Inn. Jasmine cuts him.]]
* AdaptationDyeJob: Jasmine has green hair in the anime, but she has black hair in the books.
* AdultFear: Her parents were taken from her when she was only seven years old, causing her to fend for herself and grow up alone in a forest which most in Del are afraid of.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She has dark hair, and is very stoic and distant, much like Doom.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Most noticeably in the anime. Justified considering she'd have barely spent any time indoors, living in the Forests of Silence. It seems to be a partially inherited trait, since [[spoiler: her father has tanned skin as well.]]
* AwwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: Lief and Jasmine. Jasmine and Doom have these moments, as well, but [[spoiler: in a father-daughter way.]]
* BabiesEverAfter: At the end of the third series Jasmine marries Lief and has three children named Anna, Jarred and Endon.
* BadassInDistress: She, Barda and Doom are captured by Fallow and about to be executed on the Place of Punishment. Lief has to come to rescue them.
* BadassNormal: She is small but strong and agile, and wields a dagger with precision.
* BaitAndSwitch: In ''The Maze of the Beast'' Jasmine acts as a decoy to draw any potential Shadow Lord spies away from their group. She travels separately from Lief and Barda for a time, only meeting up with them again on board the River Queen.
* BecauseDestinySaysSo: Jasmine only agreed to go on the quest with Lief and Barda because her mother's ghost appeared to her and told her to.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Between Lief and Jasmine, for the most part. Jasmine and Glock have some in the beginning of the second series.
* BerserkButton: Do not mock Jasmine or her family, or she'll cut you.
* BrokenBird: Displays this at times. Justified, since she had a pretty hard childhood, she lost her parents at an early age and had to fend for herself for nine years, and then Lief and Barda came with their quest, disturbed the life Jasmine had built up for herself in the Forests.
* CaptainObvious: Has a habit of stating the obvious, especially in the anime.
* CharacterDevelopment: Over the course of the series Jasmine learns to be a bit more trusting and a bit less wild.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Her skills and strength is incredible in the air, swinging from tree to tree. Powerful, brave and good at close range. But when it comes to fighting against magic users, she is hopelessly out matched. She also [[SuperDrowningSkills never learned how to swim]], which becomes more than a little frustrating for her in the [[GetOnTheBoat second series]].
%%* CuteBruiser
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Where to start? She grew up in a forest alone, having to fend for herself after her parents were taken away by Grey Guards when she was seven. When she was sixteen she was convinced by her dead mother to join two strangers on their quest to free Deltora from the Shadow Lord, and along the way she befriended a guy called Dain who she kind of had a crush on who happened to be [[spoiler: a spy for the Shadow Lord]]. And it turned out that [[spoiler: her lost father was really a guy she hated and was suspicious of, and he was totally changed by his experience in the Shadowlands.]]
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Of ''Deltora Shadowlands''.
* DeadpanSnarker: Has her moments.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Though she never fully defrosts, Jasmine is considerable less of an IceQueen than she was in the beginning of the series.
* DependingOnTheArtist: The color of her hair in the books is black, but in the anime it became green.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: She. Lief and Barda have to defeat the Shadow Lord and his plans three times before they and their kingdom can finally be safe and have a proper life.
* FamilyOfChoice: After her parents are gone Jasmine chooses Filli and Kree as her new family, and later when Barda and Lief appear in her life she begins to think of them like family too.
* FireForgedFriends: With Barda and Lief. Glock as well, seeing as it was only when they were in trouble in Plume that their enmity finally faded.
%%* GenkiGirl
* GreenEyes: Jasmine has brilliant green eyes that are described as being emerald-like in colour. She gets them from her mother. [[spoiler: She has to have, as her father has dark eyes.]]
* HappilyMarried: To Lief at the end of the third series.
* HeroicBSOD: Jasmine gets this in the second series, when she realises that Faith isn't real and that she was just a pawn used by the Shadow Lord to lure Lief into the Shadowlands.
* HoldingHands: Lief and Jasmine do this often in the third series.
* HotBlooded: Matched only by Lief. Barda repeatedly calls them out on it in jest or frustration. [[spoiler: She most likely gets it from her father, who was also known for being hot-blooded in his younger days.]]
* IAmWho: [[spoiler: Jasmine is Doom's daughter.]]
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Barda, Sharn and others she met during travels around Deltora.
* JunglePrincess: Though not exactly a princess (though it was falsely implied in ''Return to Del''), Jasmine did grow up wild in a forest.
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler: Doom is Jasmine's father.]]
* NatureHero: Due to her up-bringing, Jasmine has a great respect for nature, and treats them as she would people.
* NearDeathExperience: In ''Dread Mountain'', Jasmine receives a blow from a Vraal which knocks her unconscious; in the same book she walks into a Dread Gnome trap and nearly falls to her death (Lief manages to catch her hand in time and pulls her up again with Barda's help). Then when the trio are escaping their tunnel-prison she is hit by one of the Gnomes' poisoned arrows which are said to kill a person in seconds, and only lives because Lief helps her by giving her the ruby in the Belt to draw strength from.
* ObliviousToLove: [[spoiler:Played with in the second series. She's obviously not that socially clueless that she doesn't know how Lief feels about her, rather, she ignores it due to her anger at the time and becomes convinced that she's being overlooked in favor of Marilyn. She's left feeling more than a little shocked when it eventuates that Pirran pipe or no Pirran pipe, Lief would have thrown away his duties as king and relentlessly chased her in order to bring her back to him.]]
* OfficialCouple: With Lief.
* OnlySaneMan: She is this in episode 22 of the anime, as only she knows something is up about Francoise.
* OnlyOneName: She's only ever known as Jasmine; no surname is given.
* ParentalAbandonment: Both her parents were captured by Grey Guards and taken to the Shadowlands when she was seven, leaving her to fend for herself.
* PickyEater: Jasmine refuses to drink Queen Bee Cider, as she does not like the overly sweet taste of it.
* PragmaticHero: She has a very practical personality due to her upbringing in the Forests, and often prepares for possible dangers during their quests.
* ProperlyParanoid: She had to be to survive. This ends up saving everyone's lives more than once.[[spoiler: She gets it from her dad.]]
* RaisedByWolves: She was raised by trees.
* RebelliousSpirit: She has a hard time following orders, and is used to fending for herself with everything. [[spoiler: She gets it from her father.]]
* RulingCouple: At the end of the series, with Lief.
* ScarilyCompetentTracker: She can put her ear to the ground and tell you if anyone is approaching. And, if so, how many. And how big they are. She can also talk to trees.
* SheCleansUpNicely: At one point in the first series, Jasmine has gone incognito and traveled away from Lief and Barda because, as a wild girl accompanied by animal friends, she's the most recognizable member of their party. She washes, puts on a dress, covers her Wild Hair with a scarf, and puts on make up. When she later (accidentally) meets up with Lief and Barda, it takes them a long time to recognize her.
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: Mostly with Kree and Filli, although she has demonstrated the ability to understand most animal languages.
* TheStoic: Like her father, Jasmine tends to keep her emotions to herself, causing her to seem indifferent and callous at times. However, she ''does'' care.
** NotSoStoic: First when she sees Manus reuniting with his people, and later in Return to Del when she realises that Doom is her father. She breaks down into tears.
* TalkingToPlants: She understands the trees.
* {{Tomboy}}: Has shades of this.
* TragicKeepsake: Some of the things Lief sees in Jasmine's nest in the Forest of Silence are keepsakes of the parents she had lost. Special mention goes to Jasmine's dagger, which used to be her father's, which she treasures deeply and is distraught when she loses it in the Shifting Sands, and the 'wake the bear, do not fear' drawing which her father had given to her long ago and which Jasmine still kept for all those years.
%%* {{Tsundere}}
* UnwittingPawn: In the second series. The Shadow Lord uses her to lure Lief into the Shadowlands, by making Jasmine believe that she had a sister trapped there. Jasmine breaks down when she realises this and the fact that [[spoiler: Faith wasn't real after all.]]
* WeakButSkilled: Jasmine's general fighting style, due to her small stature, especially in the fourth book of the first series, The Shifting Sands, where she's classified as 'agility'.
* WeaponOfChoice: A dagger with a hilt inlaid with crystal. It used to be her father's.
* WildHair: Her hair is constantly described as tangled.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Justified, as she grew up in a forest fending for herself. Though she is still very young in other ways.

!!Doom

Leader of the Resistance, during a visit to Tom's Shop, he encounters Lief, Barda, and Jasmine. Jasmine is suspicious of him. Doom later competes in the Rithmere Games with the aim of exposing the Games as a means of scouting out great fighters and taking them to the Shadowlands. While Lief and his friends see him as aloof, he actually is more concerned about his allies than what he seems.

* AdultFear: Was forced to leave his seven-year-old daughter to grow up alone in the Forests of Silence, with a slim chance of survival. He later endured his wife's death in the Shadowlands.
* AFriendInNeed: Jarred immediately goes to Endon's aid when Endon finally asks for his help, and sacrifices his home and identity to keep the royal family safe.
* AloofAlly: How he comes off to the heroes. He may seem aloof, but he is a genuine ally, though the trio doesn't think so at first.
** To him, this trope applies to the heroes, who refuse to join the resistance in the name of some quest that they will not share the details of.
* BadassInDistress: Barda, Jasmine and Doom are captured by Fallow and about to be executed on the Place of Punishment. Lief has to come to rescue them.
%%* BadassNormal
* BaitAndSwitch: Doom is fond of this trope, it seems. He uses it in his plan [[spoiler: to hide the royal family from the Shadow Lord.]]
** He uses it again in ''Return to Del'', when the trio and their allies are debating the best way to get to Withick Mire without being noticed by Shadow Lord spies. Much like his original plan to hide the royal family, he places decoys of Lief, Barda and Jasmine in the west near the River Tor to make the Shadow Lord turn his attention there.
* TheBlacksmith: When he was [[spoiler: Jarred of the Forge]]. In the second series, he helps Lief craft a perfect replica of the [[spoiler: Belt of Deltora]]. He also later heats up the forge to the right temperature to destroy the [[spoiler: Shadow Lord's crystal.]]
* BoldExplorer: What Doom resolves to be at the end of the third series.
* BrutalHonesty: Doom never lies. Never. Except when he's protecting someone he cares about.
* CannotStandThemCannotLiveWithoutThem: Jasmine certainly feels this way when they are first forced to team-up.
* TheConfidant: To Endon during his childhood in the palace of Del.
* CrazyPrepared: It comes with being ProperlyParanoid. You really can't blame him, all things considered...
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: After he and his wife fled Del in place of the royal family, they settled in the Forests of Silence as Tora refused them sanctuary. When Jasmine was seven both he and Anna were captured by Grey Guards and marched to the Shadowlands. In the Shadowlands Anna died (which broke Jarred), and soon after he lost his memories during his own fight in the Shadow Arena. Jarred survived and returned to Deltora but became an empty shell of a man due to the trauma and his own bitterness toward the royal family, who he mistakenly believed abandoned Deltora to its fate.]]
%%* DeadpanSnarker
* DeathFakedForYou: After he is found by Crian the old blacksmith throws his clothes into the sea to make the palace guards believe he is drowned.
* DefrostingIceKing: Though he never completely defrosts, he is less of a JerkAss in the later two series than he is in the first.
* {{Determinator}}: Never gives up in anything.
* DysfunctionalFamily: Doom and Jasmine are father and daughter, but they hardly ever show it. It isn't because they don't love each other, but because their family is strange. They had just reunited after being apart for nine years, and during those nine years Jarred became a completely different person to the father Jasmine would have remembered from long ago. They chose to start afresh as 'Doom and Jasmine' rather than 'Jarred and his daughter'. A scene near the end of "The Sister of the South" shows just how dysfunctional their relationship is.
* FireForgedFriends: With Lief, Barda and Jasmine.
* FirstGirlWins: Anna is the first (and only) girl Jarred meets in prologue of the first book, and he later marries her.
* FrameUp: Jarred is accused of attempting to murder Endon, and is forced to flee the palace because of it. [[spoiler: He eventually gets cleared of it, however, years later when Endon comes to realise the truth of it.]]
** In The Maze of the Beast the Shadow Lord's Ols try to make the trio believe that Doom is secretly working for the Shadow Lord by making it seem as if he had sold out the location of the Amethyst to the Pirates. [[spoiler: It ends up being a lie.]]
** In the third series [[spoiler: Paff does her best to make Josef believe that Doom is a Shadow Lord servant and the Guardian of the Sister of the South. In actuality, he is neither. It is Paff who is the real traitor.]]
* GoodIsNotNice: Or at least, [[JerkassFacade he doesn't like people to think he's nice]].
** Doom is pretty hard on Josef in the third series, so much so that Josef ends up distrusting him because of it. He doesn't really have anything against Josef, though; it's just the way he is. [[spoiler: Paff uses it to her full advantage, however, to conceal the fact that she is the Guardian of the Sister of the South.]]
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Doom has a grizzled face and a scar on the side of his head, but he's basically a good guy.
* HappilyMarried: To Anna before her death.
* HeroicSacrifice: Gives up his identity and home to protect the royal family.
* HotBlooded: As a child. After he becomes Doom, not so much. It's something Jasmine seems to have inherited, along with the foot-stamping.
* IdentityAmnesia: He was once [[spoiler: Endon's best friend Jarred]], and he is [[spoiler: Jasmine's]] father. He forgot all this after sustaining a serious head injury in the Shadowlands while fighting a Vraal.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Lief, Crian and people in the Resistance. And also the old Doom of the Hills.
* ItsAllMyFault: He blames himself for Josef's death in the third series, as he had been hard on Josef, so much so that Josef distrusted him because of it.
* IWorkAlone: Admittedly he actually has some valid reasons for it. When the Enemy has shapeshifting Ols, you never know who you can trust, so working alone can be lifesaving.
%%* ImplausibleFencingPowers
* LivingLieDetector: he can generally tell when he's being lied to, and detect most Ols just by looking at them. [[spoiler: Supposedly anyway. Grade Three Ols, however, are a different story.]]
* Jerkass: But only in the first series. It's really just a facade to cover up the fact that he's bitter and empty inside. He actually does act nice or simply cordial at times, such as when he invites the trio to stay in the Resistance stronghold despite the fact that it would bring the Grey Guards to their door, and also after the short time he spends inside Tora which saps his willpower. Unfortunately the JerkAss side of his overshadows the nice part of him and he's continuously mistrusted by the trio for most of the first series.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In the second and third series, when the other characters have finally noticed that he does have a nice side after all.
* LikeASonToMe: Though he never says it aloud, he seems to have thought of Dain like a son, as Dain told the trio that Doom was like a father to him.
* LukeIAmYourFather: He's [[spoiler: Jasmine's]] father.
* MadeASlave: He and his wife get taken to the Shadowlands as slaves when Jasmine is seven years old.
* MysteriousPast: In the first series, no one knows anything about Doom's past, least of all Doom himself.
* NearDeathExperience: He almost dies in the Shadow Arena while fighting a Vraal. He only just manages to escape after he hits his head and loses all his memories.
* NervesOfSteel: Is able to think quickly in a dangerous and difficult situation and not panic.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Even his own daughter calls him Doom. It's justified given that after being Doom of the Hills for so long it would be impossible to go back to being Jarred because he just isn't that person anymore,
* PowerOfTrust: In the very beginning, Jarred is trusted by Endon, who he gives up his identity for so that the royal family can be safe from the Shadow Lord. Then he goes into the Shadow Arena... and becomes a hard, cold man who rarely trusts. However, he chooses to trust Lief, Barda and Jasmine after he rescues them from Grey Guards, by inviting them into the Resistance stronghold and admitting what his motives had been for attending the Games in the first place. However, the three companions refuse to trust him in turn, and he is left wondering if he was wrong to trust them as they would not trust him. He is greatly mistrusted by the trio in the first series, but in the end turns out to be a steadfast ally.
** In ''The Isle of Illusion", when Sharn and Marilen are speculating on who could have tried to poison Marilen Sharn says that it couldn't be Doom as he is 'above suspicion'. They are right of course, and it goes to show how trusted Doom is by the trio and royal family by that point in the series that they would not even think of suspecting him of treachery.
** In "The Sister of the South" Doom goes white when he believes for a moment that Lief accuses him of treachery, showing just how much he values Lief's trust in him.
* PragmaticHero: Is fond of taking a pragmatic approach to planning a venture.
* ProperlyParanoid: He leads a rebel organization when the Enemy has shapeshifting spies. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, Dain is one of the most advanced shapeshifters, the undetectable kind.]]
* RebelLeader: Leads the rebellion against the Shadow Lord.
* RebelliousSpirit: In his own, silent way.
** In part one of The Forests of Silence Jarred is said to long to break the Rule and climb over the wall and see the city. The only reason he doesn't do it is because it would mean being taken away from the palace and Endon.
* SecretIdentity: [[spoiler: He's actually Jarred.]]
* StartingANewLife: A result of his death being faked and being hunted by the palace, Jarred settles into life at the forge with Anna and Crian and becomes Crian's apprentice.
** This also comes into play when he and Anna flee Del on the night of the Shadow Lord's invasion. As the Torans refuse to provide shelter for them they are forced to settle in the Forests of Silence. And there's also when Jarred escapes from the Shadow Arena and becomes Doom, with no recollection of who he truly is.
* TheStoic: He rarely changes expression.
** NotSoStoic: When he hits his head and begins to recover all his memories in Return to Del, Doom breaks down when he begins conversing with Past!Anna and Past!Jasmine.
* UndyingLoyalty: In The Forests of Silence prologue, to Endon. And later to Lief.

!! Anna
Crian's granddaughter and Jarred's wife. She is pregnant during the prologue in ''The Forests of Silence'' and is due to give birth in early autumn.

* AdultFear: Anna has to leave behind her seven-year-old daughter to fend for herself in the Forests of Silence when she and Jarred are captured by Grey Guards and taken to the Shadowlands. She doesn't even know if Jasmine is alive or dead.
* BabiesEverAfter: Between the Prologue and Part Two of The Forests of Silence, Anna gives birth to Jasmine.
* BodyHorror: See below.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: A popular fan theory is that Anna is [[spoiler: ripped apart by a Vraal in the Shadow Arena]]. Given what slaves had to endure in the Shadowlands, it's all too likely that however it happened Anna's death was brutal and cruel.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Anna's mother died in childbirth; her father died three years before the series begins.
* GreenEyes: Since Jarred/Doom has dark eyes and Jasmine has green eyes, it's likely that Anna had green eyes as well.
* HappilyMarried: To Jarred before her death.
* HeroicSacrifice: Willingly gives up her home and identity to protect the royal family.
* MadeASlave: Was taken to the Shadowlands with Jarred, possibly to fight in the Shadow Arena.
* TheMedic: Anna was said to be a healer, wise in the knowledge of herbs and growing things. She cures Jarred after he is paralysed by the Wenn in First Wood.
* PregnantBadass: Though not as badass as Sharn in the Forests of Silence prologue, Anna gets points for being willing to give up her identity and home so that Endon, Sharn and their child would be safe.
* RaisedByGrandparents: Implied and very likely, as Anna's parents died when she was fairly young and she seemed to be close to her grandfather.
* SoProudOfYou: Anna says this to Jasmine when her spirit is momentarily drawn back by the topaz.

!! Crian
Anna's grandfather and a blacksmith. Stubborn and fearless, Crian is the only one brave enough to give shelter to Jarred after his flight from the Palace of Del, and has a large influence on Jarred. He agrees to take Jarred on as an apprentice, and after his death Jarred takes over as blacksmith.
* TheBlacksmith: Of Del before the Shadow Lord's invasion.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Jarred.

!!Jinks
A former palace acrobat from before the invasion as well as a former acquaintance of Barda. He later joined the resistance. Is well known in all his circles for causing mischief.
* CharacterDeath: He eats a [[spoiler: poisoned cake intended for Marilen.]]
* JerkAss: Stirs up trouble for gain and amusement.
* TheTrickster: Likes to deceive others for his own gain.

!!Josef
The palace librarian during the time of King Alton and King Lief, and the guardian of the Deltora Annals.
* AFriendInNeed: Josef gives away the knowledge of Marilen's presence in the palace to comfort Amarantz, who is distraught at the thought of Lief not being in the palace as she has come so close to speaking with him to convince him to take an army into the Shadowlands to free the slaves trapped there. He is guilt-ridden afterward, as he realises the possible ramifications of his action which put Marilen in danger.
* CharacterDeath: Josef is killed by [[spoiler: Paff, who had been putting poison into his food and drink to make him seem crazy and distrust those around him, particularly Doom.]]
* Cloudcuckoolander: Comes off as this [[InUniverseExanple in universe]]. A lot of his ideas, including his opinions on Dragons, lead people to assume he is crazy. The fact that he tends to babble does not help.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Fakes his own death to save the Deltora Annals, and lives the next years as a homeless person on the streets of Del.
* DeathByFire: What everyone thinks happened to Josef, before he shows himself to be alive in ''Cavern of the Fear''.
* FakingTheDead: After being ordered by Prandine to destroy the Deltora Annals, Josef TookAThirdOption and faked his own death by making out that he burned himself along with the Annals. He even wrote a convincing suicide note to go with it.
* FamilyOfChoice: During the Shadow Lord's rule he informally adopts Ranesh into his family, and comes to view the couple who sheltered them in the Pottery as very close friends.
* HiddenDepths: At first he seems like a Cloudcuckoolander, and is not taken very seriously as a result. However, he turns out to be brave, smart and extremely loyal to Deltora.
* LikeASonToMe: Josef tells this to Ranesh [[spoiler: just before he dies.]]
* ParentalSubstitute: For Ranesh.
%%* PowerOfTrust

!! Amarantz
An elderly woman who once ran the largest pottery in Del and is friends with Sharn. She and her husband were taken to the Shadowlands after a failed attempt at rebellion.
* FacialHorror: Has ugly scars that mark her cheeks and brow.
* CharacterDeath: Eats [[spoiler: one of her own poisoned cakes.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Was taken to the Shadowlands as a slave after a failed rebellion.
* {{Determinator}}: Upon gaining entry into the palace, Amarantz is quick in trying to gain an audience with Lief to convince him to bring an army to the Shadowlands to save the trapped Deltorans. She doesn't give up hope that she'll be able to speak to him eventually about it-- in fact, the only time she appears to be in despair is when she realises that Lief is in Tora and not Del.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: Amarantz dies in [[spoiler: Sharn]]'s arms after [[spoiler: swallowing one of her poisoned cakes.]]
* HappilyMarried: To an unnamed man, before they are separated after being taken to the Shadowlands as slaves.
* MadeASlave: Was taken to the Shadowlands as a slave after a failed rebellion.
* TamperingWithFoodAndDrink: Amarantz attempts to poison Marilen in ''Isle of Illusion'', after hearing from Josef that Marilen is Lief's Toran bride. Fortunately, Marilen realises this [[spoiler: with the help of the amethyst in the Belt of Deltora]] and does not touch her lunch. She later also tries to dispose of Doom, Lindal and Steven in the same way.
* TheMole: She is under control of a [[spoiler: Conversion Project worm.]]
* PuppeteerParasite: Part of the [[spoiler: Shadow Lord's Conversion Project.]]

!! Mikal
A former potter of Del. He is captured and taken to the Shadowlands, where his hands are turned into talons, earning him the nickname 'Claw'.
* BadassNormal: Sort of. He fights fearlessly against plenty of enemies in the Shadowlands with no problems at all, but the fact that he has talons for hands which he uses to his advantage during fights may subvert this trope slightly.
* BodyHorror: Used as an experiment while in the Shadowlands. He now sports talons in place of hands.
* CursedWithAwesome: By his own admission, his talons come in handy when it's a struggle to survive.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He was taken to the Shadowlands, and sent to the Factory, where he was brutally experimented on by Shadow Lord servants. This caused him to have talons in place of hands.
* DeadpanSnarker: Is known for it.
* {{Determinator}}: Never gives up, though he is very thoughtful and wary when planning his approach to a fight.
* FireForgedFriends: With Brianne and Gers, and the second Shadowlands resistance group. Later with Lief, Barda and Jasmine.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Known as Claw while in the Shadowlands Resistance.
* PragmaticHero: Is very much so. In ''The Shadowlands'' he orders the others to be careful entering the Resistance hideout in case it had been invaded by Shadow Lord servants. He is right, too, as [[spoiler: Hellena's group had been discovered and captured by the Shadow Lord.]]
* ProperlyParanoid: Upon meeting Lief, Barda and Jasmine, Claw is wary of them, thinking that they might be Shadow Lord spies. It is justified, since no one had been known to have escaped from the Shadowlands or even entered it of their own free will. And since Claw is a RebelLeader in the land of their Enemy, with their Enemy's servants surrounding them, he has a valid reason to be ProperlyParanoid.
* RebelLeader: Leads the Shadowlands resistance.
* MadeASlave: Taken to the Shadowlands as a slave long ago to be experimented on.
* NervesOfSteel: Never seems to panic or flinch during a battle.
* RebelliousSpirit: Leads a Resistance band in the Shadowlands.
* StartingANewLife: After his return from the Shadowlands.
* TheStoic: He rarely shows his true feelings. Justified, since he the leader of a rebel group within enemy territory.
* TrueCompanions: With Brianne and Gers.

!!Britta
A young woman of Del who longs to be a trader and the protagonist of the ''Star of Deltora'' series. Against great opposition, she enters the Rosalyn Trust competition in the hopes of becoming the new Trader Rosalyn apprentice.
* AdultFear: There is an attempt on her life in ''The Towers of Illica''. If Sky and Jewel hadn't been close by when it happened, Britta would likely have fallen to her death and drowned in the stormy sea.
* BrokenPedestal: Her view of her father was forever altered when he betrayed his own family and people to claim the Staff of Tier.
* CastingAShadow: Not her, per se, but the Wraiths that follow her. Most people, including herself, see only creeping shadows.
* DaddysGirl: Before Dare's betrayal she had an extremely close relationship with him, to the point where she wanted to be a trader like him. This relationship (on Britta's side) turned bitter after Dare's betrayal.
* DamselOutOfDistress: In the swamplands of Two Moons Britta finds herself in a sticky situation but still manages to get herself out of it by bargaining with Thurl. She is the one who saves Sky from being thrown into the mud to drown, and bargains for a safe way out of there for both of them. Earlier in ''Shadows of the Master'' she is knocked unconscious and trapped in a cellar and she immediately sets her mind to escaping her predicament.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Her father was the infamous Dare Larsett, who betrayed his crew and the captain of his ship to find the Staff of Tier and become its new master. After news of Dare's betrayal reached Del Britta and her family were forced into hiding because of the scandal.
* {{Determinator}}: Is determined to win the competition and get back the ''Star of Deltora'' from the Rosalyn Fleet.
* DisappearedDad: Her father, Dare Larsett, never came home after finding the Island of Tier.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: After leaving Two Moons she creates a fringe of her hair to hide the permanent gold mark left there by Thurl in the Swamplands.
* FireForgedFriends: She and Sky graduadually develop something of a comradery after their run-in in the Two Moons swamp.
* GuileHero: Unlike Lief or Rye, who had weapons and/or magic on their side, Britta must defend herself and succeed in her quest with only her wits.
* HotBlooded: Very much so, though she is also very level-headed and polite as well.
* InTheBlood: Like her father, she has an intense love of trade and seafaring, though she is not supposed to indulge in either.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Captain Gripp.
* IntrepidMerchant: Since she was young, she has always wanted to be a trader and go to strange lands. Now she finds that she is in the running to become apprentice to the Trader Rosalyn.
* InSeriesNickname: Is called 'Britt' by Captain Gripp.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Once it sank in that she had a real chance in the Rosalyn Trust competition, she seized the opportunity with both hands and fought tooth and nail to make it count.
* MagnificentBastard: Her first act in the story is talking a customer into buying an entire wheel of cheese.
* NiceGirl: Is generally a kind and generous person.
* NonActionGirl: Unlike previous protagonists, she is decidedly a NonActionGirl, her main talent being in trading. She has no skills at all in combat.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: In Olla-Scollbow's Tower, Britta tries to comfort a despairing and lovesick Collin by telling him that "there is more to the world than the Towers of Illica". The very next morning Collin's disappeared, having taken enough heart in Britta's words to choose to elope with his lover, and Britta is accidentally implicated in the scandal in a letter of his to his parents. And to top it all off, Britta is accused of stealing a sunrise pearl from the Collection which was actually taken by Collin. All of this results in a very dangerous situation, at the end of which Britta is forced to hand over her own sunrise pearl to the Scollbows and confined to her cabin until further notice.
* ObliviousToLove: Britta seems entirely unaware that Jantsy harbors romantic feelings for her.
** She's also entirely oblivious to Sky's obvious affection for her, dismissing his trade of an odi-hairclip usually given as a love-token (its pattern meaning '''forever''') to her to help her win the contest as a favor from a friend and payment of a debt.
* OddFriendship: Despite the many differences between her and Jewel, the two quickly hit it off and begin looking out for each other. [[spoiler: This extends to Sky once they begin to trust each other.]]
* {{Pride}}: Has a good deal of pride, though it's not a FatalFlaw of hers.
* PrimAndProperBun: Initially wears her hair in a bun at the nape of her neck, as is befitting a 'proper' lady of Del. In ''Two Moons'' she lets her hair down to give her some relief from the heat of the sun.
* RebelliousSpirit: She longs to escape her dreary life in the little shop in Del and be free to follow her dream of becoming a trader and winning back the ''Star of Deltora''.
* SecretIdentity: Only close friends know who her father is.
* SilkHidingSteel: Britta is much stronger than she appears to be.
* SirSwearsALot: She seems to curse a lot more than would be expected for a woman of Del.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: It's stated that Britta bears a strong resemblance to her father.
* TookALevelInBadass: Goes through this after she finds herself trapped in the swamplands on Two Moons. She tries to rescue a boy from drowning in the mud (and almost drowns herself), bargains with Thurl for her way out and later manages to save Sky from being thrown into the mud by the turtle-people by trading her purse for his life. And then it's revealed that she's now the owner of a goozli doll, which is what Thurl had given her as thanks for saving Stassi's life.
* [[TurnOutLikeHisFather Turn Out Like Her Father]]: Everybody who knows her father is Larsett can see that she takes after him and, with the exception of Captain Gripp, they all fear it.
* WildHair: Her hair is a downplayed example. Though it's described as messy and tangled, it's nowhere near as bad as Jasmine's.

!!Margareth
The older sister of Britta.
* NiceGirl: She has a very gentle and kind personality.

!!Maarie
Mother of Britta and Margareth, and wife to Dare Larsett.

!!Dare Larsett
Britta's father and famous trader. He was second only to Mab in the Rosalyn fleet before he decided to strike out on his own, with his own ship, the Star of Deltora. [[spoiler: He is the current King of Tier.]]
* BrokenPedestal: He was once the second most famous trader in all of Deltora. Now he is hated by everyone, including his own family.
* TheExile: Spent the sixteen years of Shadow Lord rule in exile with the Rosalyn Fleet.
* IntrepidMerchant: As a member of the Rosalyn fleet, this is a given.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler: He apparently sacrificed his entire crew to get to the Staff of Tier, which in turn awoke the dreaded Island of Tier.]]
* StartingANewLife: He accompanied the Rosalyn Fleet into exile on the day of the Shadow Lord invasion and made a name for himself as a trader.
* StreetUrchin: He spent most of his childhood on the streets of Del.
* TragicMonster: It's implied that he was bewitched by the Staff into killing his crew and retreating to the Isle of Tier, and that he regrets what he has become.

!!Jantsy
A close friend of Britta's who works at a bakery. He is the only person she has trusted [[spoiler:with the secret of her father.]]
* DoggedNiceGuy: Type II to Britta. It's implied that he is her only friend outside of family and Captain Gripp, and that the main reason she's friends with him at all is because he took interest in her.
* JustFriends: Jantsy clearly has some unresolved feelings for Britta. Britta seems completely oblivious to this and merely views Jantsy as a good, dependable friend.
* NiceGuy: Is good-hearted and nice.

!!Captain Gripp
A retired ship's captain, and a close friend and ally of Britta.
* CoolOldGuy: Britta thinks so at least. Jantsy, on the other hand, seems content to wait outside his house rather than go in with Britta.
* TheExile: Spent the sixteen years of Shadow Lord rule in exile with the Rosalyn Fleet.
* HiddenDepths: He used to make intricate models of the ships in the Rosalyn Fleet, including the ''Star of Deltora''. He stopped when his hands developed arthritis.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Britta, as well as Larsett back in the day.

!!Mab
The current Trader Rosalyn and the commander of the Rosalyn Fleet. She is currently looking for an apprentice to inherit her title.
* TheExile: Spent the sixteen years of Shadow Lord rule in exile with the Rosalyn Fleet.
* FieryRedhead: She's a redhead who is proud, stubborn and fiery.
* IntrepidMerchant: She is effectively the queen of Intrepid Merchants.
* LikeASonToMe: Felt this way towards Larsett. It is implied that, had the terms of the Rosalyn Trust been more lenient, he would have been her preferred successor.
* {{Pride}}: One of her defining traits. It's implied to be the reason she waited so long to get and apprentice, seeing it as admitting that she is getting old and weak.
* WhatTheHellHero: Gives a very short one to Britta after she discovers that the latter had a role in the mess surrounding the elopement of Collin and Vorn.

!!Zoolah
Mikah's sister and an employee of the Rosalyn Fleet.
* BerserkButton: She doesn't like it when people challenge her authority, or worse, disregard it altogether.
* CharacterDeath: Is killed by [[spoiler: the shadows in ''Shadows of the Master'']], when she is harassing [[spoiler: Britta]] and threatening to reveal her true identity.
* ControlFreak: She has little power within the Rosalyn Fleet, but she excercises it whenever she gets the chance.
* ItsPersonal: Her Feud with Britta gets more and more heated as she tries to exact her retribution and gets repeatedly shot down. [[spoiler: But nothing compares to when she finds out that Britta's father is Larsett, the man who killed her brother.]]
* ThisMeansWar: She will instantly hold a grudge against anybody who offends her and will never let it go until she gets her way.

!!Sorrel
An experienced trader who works for the Rosalyn Fleet.
* CoolOldGuy: He seems to sense that Britta is nervous and becomes her main supporter among the Rosalyn Trust judges.
* TheExile: Spent the sixteen years of Shadow Lord rule in exile with the Rosalyn Fleet.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: It's mostly thanks to him that Zoolah never succeeded in having Britta removed from the competition.

!!Mikah
The first captain of the Star of Deltora. [[spoiler: He died after setting the Star on course to Del, with only a note written by him to explain what happened.]]
* TheExile: Spent the sixteen years of Shadow Lord rule in exile with the Rosalyn Fleet.
* NiceGuy: He was known to be a generally nice guy.

!!Vashti
A snobbish, disdainful trader's daughter. She is a candidate for the Rosalyn apprenticeship.
* TheAce: She is the best of the prim and proper trader's daughters and nobody doubted for a second that she would become a finalist.
* DeliberatelyCuteChild: Britta likens her appearance to that of a kitten that has never failed to get all the cream she wanted.
* InsufferableGenius: She is the single most prepared of the Rosalyn Trust candidates and is not afraid to flaunt her knowledge.
* OutOfFocus: She barely appears in ''Towers of Illica''.
* SpoiledBrat: She was apparently set to ride home in a carriage.

!!Lean Alice
A seer of Del, who prophesied the Shadow Lord invasion and the sixteen years of tyranny.
* AuraVision: While most people can 'see' the Wraiths in the form of creeping shadows, Lean Alice seems to be able to clearly identify them, to the point where her can tell who they are following.

!!Master Sheevers
A former master potter of Del whose mind has been broken by suffering and captivity in the Shadowlands.
* {{Determinator}}: He won't stop collecting his lamps until he has all of those which were meant to be given to the rebels in the pottery.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He is a master potter who was taken to the Shadowlands as a slave long ago for participating in a rebellion against the Shadow Lord.
* DespairEventHorizon: Like everybody else who was enslaved in the Shadowlands, life was not great for him. He had clung to the hope that his life would return to normal if he ever got home, but soon found that his mind and body were still not sound.
* FacialHorror: He has a horrifying scar over his eye.
* RebelliousSpirit: Implied, since he decided to join the ill-fated Shadow Lord rebellion which took place in Del.

!!Healer Kay
Mab's healer.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Ralads]]

Ancient people of Deltora's northeast. They prefer to live in the dense wilderness of their territory. Ralads are renowned builders and were the architects of the palace in Del.

!! Manus
A Ralad man sent by his people to search for help. He is captured by Jin and Jod along the way.
* AFriendInNeed: Goes to Withick Mire to represent the Ralads in the ceremony to restore the Belt of Deltora and find its heir.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Spends years living as a pet to Jin and Jod.
* HeroicSacrifice: Almost. He is completely willing to become Soldeen's 'pet' so that Lief, Barda and Jasmine can retrieve the ruby for the Belt of Deltora, because they saved his life twice and he is in their debt. Thankfully, this doesn't become necessary.

* GuileHero: Has some shades of this. His strategy in trying to enter the Rosalyn competition was to trick the other competitors and the traders into believing that he was female by HidingInPlainSight.
* HiddenDepths: Though at first appearing to be insolent and arrogant, there's more to him than meets the eyes. As Britta puts it:
---> "Sky was hard to understand. He was prickly and reckless, and thought nothing of being dishonest when it suited him. Yet he could be brave and gentle, and had his own sense of honour."

For characters belonging to the
Deltoran Royal Family]]

* KingIncognito: In later books.

* HappilyMarried: To Sharn.
* ItsAllMyFault: Endon blames himself for the Shadow Lord's invasion of Deltora and his people's suffering, thinking that if he had been a stronger king and had listened to Jarred, it wouldn't have happened.
* KingIncognito:
Family, see Characters/DeltoranRoyalFamily.

For the sixteen years of the Shadow Lord's rule, Endon is disguised as a blacksmith, which is ironic, since the first King of Deltora was also a blacksmith.
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: To Sharn.

* HappilyMarried: To Endon.

* TheBigGuy: One of the strongest
characters in the series who isn't a [[BloodKnight Jalis]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Very much so.

* {{Deuteragonist}}: Of ''Deltora Shadowlands''.
* DeadpanSnarker: Has her moments.
* OfficialCouple: With Lief.
* OnlySaneMan: She is this in episode 22 of the anime, as only she knows something is up about Francoise.
* OnlyOneName: She's only ever known as Jasmine; no surname is given.
* ParentalAbandonment: Both her parents were captured by Grey Guards and taken
belonging to the Shadowlands when she was seven, leaving her to fend for herself.
** NotSoStoic: First when she sees Manus reuniting with his people, and later in Return to
Del when she realises that Doom is her father.
%%* {{Tsundere}}

While Lief and his friends
Tribe, see him as aloof, he actually is more concerned about his allies than what he seems.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In the second and third series, when
Characters/DelTribe.

For
the other characters have finally noticed that he does have a nice side after all.
* LikeASonToMe: Though he never says it aloud, he seems to have thought of Dain like a son, as Dain told the trio that Doom was like a father to him.
* LukeIAmYourFather: He's [[spoiler: Jasmine's]] father.

* BodyHorror: See below.

* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Jarred.

* ParentalSubstitute: For Ranesh.

* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Captain Gripp.

He is completely willing to become Soldeen's 'pet' so that Lief, Barda and Jasmine can retrieve the ruby for the Belt of
inhabiting Deltora, because they saved his life twice and he is in their debt. Thankfully, this doesn't become necessary.
* IOweYouMyLife: Says this to Lief, Barda and Jasmine after they rescue him from Grey Guards and again after they save him from Jin and Jod.
* MadeASlave: Was forced to be a slave for Jin and Jod for five years, and had to watch them trap hapless victims and stew them.
* SuddenlyVoiced: In-universe example.
* TheSpeechless: He, and all the people of Raladin, are voiceless due to a spell cast by the sorceress Thaegan which took away the voices of the Ralads who spoke up against the enchantment of D'Or into the Lake of Tears, and also their descendants.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: People of D'Or and Eastern Settlers]]

Peoples from all over Deltora as well as from across the sea who have settled in the northeast. Notable villages include D'Or and the village of Broome.

!! Nanion
Leader of the people of D'Or. [[spoiler:He became Soldeen when D'Or was transformed into the Lake of Tears]].
* NiceGuy: After he is freed from his curse, he's a generally nice guy.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Spent one hundred years as a monster called Soldeen, with no recollection of his human life.
* IdentityAmnesia: Had no memory of his past life when he was Soldeen.
* TragicMonster: At first, when the companions encounter him in the Lake of Tears they find him evil and frightening, but with the help of the topaz Lief realises that Soldeen is as much a victim of Thaegan as the people of Raladin are and feels sorry for him.

!! Ethena
Nanion's wife. [[spoiler: She became the Weeping Rock when D'Or was transformed into the Lake of Tears]].
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Was enchanted by Thaegan (along with the entire city of D'Or) a hundred years before, and lived a cursed, miserable half-life as a weeping rock.

* NervesOfSteel: She never panics during a fight, and doesn't seem to have any fear at all.
* PragmaticHero: Like Doom, Claw and other heroes, she prefers to take a cautious, pragmatic approach when planning anything, and prepare for any possible danger.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Implied. Sky is revealed to have had a hard life in Rithmere and is used to the sight of a dead body.
* FireForgedFriends: After their adventure in the Two Moons swamp, Sky begins doing favours for Britta. Over the course of their stay at Illica, they both start helping out the other.
* {{Foil}}: To Dare Larsett. Both of them had a hard life growing up and depended on their wits to survive. They also both dreamed of escaping their harsh lives and making a name and fortune for themselves.
* GenderReveal: [[spoiler:Sky turns out to be a young man as opposed to a young woman.]]

* HiddenInPlainSight: [[spoiler: He does very little to actually disguise that he is male, relying on his grown-out hair and the simple fact that nobody would suspect it.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: While Jewel is rough looking yet kind, Sky is unkempt, insolent and spiteful.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Sky seems to gain more respect for Britta and Jewel once they are all cemented as in the running for finalists, but is still rather hostile towards [[SpoiledBrat Vashti]].
* OddFriendship: [[spoiler:Develops one with Britta and, by extension, Jewel.]]
* PragmaticHero: He won't hesitate to commit dishonest or unsavory acts in order to achieve his goals. As he puts it: "I grew up on the banks of the River Broad, living by my wits. It was a hard school, and it taught me to take my chances where I saw them."
* SympathyForTheDevil: Sky admits to Britta to actually feel sorry for Dare Larsett, unlike most of Del who think of the man as a wicked traitor.

* {{Pride}}: All the Dread Gnomes are known for this.
* ProperlyParanoid: Even two years after the end of the Shadow Lord's reign, Fa-Glin still uses code to disguise his letters to Lief, Barda and Jasmine in Del. It's mainly because it's a part of his personality (all Dread Gnomes are naturally suspicious) and also because of his DarkAndTroubledPast.

* ResignedToTheCall: Marilen was not happy when she was revealed as [[spoiler: Lief's heir to the Belt]] as she never wanted to be Queen of Deltora. The very next morning Collin's disappeared, having taken enough heart in Britta's words to choose to elope with his lover, and Britta is accidentally implicated in the scandal in a letter of his to his parents. All of this results in a very dangerous situation, at the end of which Britta is forced to hand over her own sunrise pearl to the Scollbows and confined to her cabin until further notice.
