For tropes applying to Bertrand, see [[Characters/CriticalRoleMarquetCampaign Here]] (Potential Campaign 3 Spoilers ahead).

* BadLiar: He claims vast knowledge of and experience in Pandemonium when he offers to aid Vox Machina. As soon as they arrive, it's clear he's making things up as he goes.
* BadassDecay: [[spoiler: Foppish and foolish though he was in his first appearance, he was still a very competent and dangerous fighter able to keep pace with Vox Machina. By the time he meets up with the Campaign Three party in Marquet, he's nearly four decades older and is a shadow of his former self. Mechanically speaking, he regressed from 18th level to ''fifth.'']]
* BadassGrandpa: Downplayed, but still present. [[spoiler: By the time of Campaign Three, he's nowhere near the fighter he used to be, even though he's just as boastful as he ever was and shows slight signs of senility. But considering that he's probably in his ''late 80s or older'' [[note]]Bertrand was noted to already have grey hair in "The Search for Grog" and assumed to be at least 50; Campaign 3 takes place 38 years after the conclusion of the first one.[[/note]] it's astonishing that he's able to fight at all, even as a shadow of his former self.]]
* BewareTheSillyOnes: As out of his depth in Pandemonium as he is, he can still dish out plenty of damage with his rapier.
* CowardlyLion: Bertrand may be a near quivering mess in Pandemonium, but he was the first one to engage the boss, and went to [[spoiler:fight the bugbears for Percy's arm]] entirely on his own.
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: Describes himself as wearing the "finest finery" and brags about his prior travels to the "Pandemonium Plane of Pandemonium."
* {{Expy}}: As [[WordOfGod Travis]] confirmed on Talks Machina, Bertrand is an expy of [[Literature/HarryPotter Gilderoy Lockhart]].
* ItsAllAboutMe: He's an insufferable braggart and wants payment and a reputation boost for helping Vox Machina. The most he gets though is Vex offering him a gift card to The Slayer's Cake.
-->'''Allura:''' I'm going to explain to you the term "volunteer."
* LeeroyJenkins: Tends to be the first one to charge into the various encounters Vox Machina face in Pandemonium.
* MilesGloriosus: He frequently brags about his past exploits to anyone who will listen--and given his obvious lying about his familiarity with Pandemonium, some of his other stories are probably exaggerated or even fabricated completely.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:After Percy gets his arm ripped off by bugbears, Bertrand charges after them by himself, manages to single-handedly slay all five of them, and retrieve Percy's dismembered arm.]]
* OldMaster: Averted. He's older than any of Vox Machina, but is slightly underleveled in comparison. [[spoiler: Completely averted in Campaign Three. He was 18th level when he fought beside Vox Machina, but his skills have so diminished that he's now 5th level. That's still higher than the other characters, but not by much, and he doesn't get any of the HDYWTDT moments in the first fight.]]
* OneSteveLimit: Averted. Bertrand shares a name with the Dwendalian emperor.
* RoyalRapier: His weapon of choice.
* SeniorSleepCycle: [[spoiler: After the first long rest of Campaign 3, Travis states that he's awake at 5 AM, and jokes that he's already eaten three bowls of Grape Nuts by the time the other characters wake up.]]
* SilverFox: He's an older man, and is no less handsome for it. Travis even describes him as this word for word.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Makes himself and his alleged exploits out as a big deal, though neither Vox Machina nor any of the citizens of Vasselheim buy into his boasting.
* SwordCane: [[spoiler: Wields one in his old age.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Despite his obviously unsubstantiated ego and behavior, he is just about as competent as any member of Vox Machina in a battle. He also manages to [[spoiler:retrieve Percy's severed arm from and slay five bugbears completely on his own.]]

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He might be snappish and irritated by Keyleth's optimism, but as often he complains about the team's antics he's perfectly willing to give them magical support when they need him. By the end of his time with group, he's thawed to downright civil. When met again, he's a lot nicer, albeit still incredibly snarky.

** It has been argued this is unlikely due to Fjord living in the Menagerie Coast whilst Garthok lived in Emon, which is on a completely different continent. However, theorists still put forth that Garthok may have been part of a Clasp attempt to expand into Wildemount (since the Clasp expressed expansionist desires to Vox Machina around the time) but the Myriad put a stop to it.

* AllThereInTheManual: During his actual on-screen appearances Garthok plays his cards close to his chest and reveals very little about his personal life. However, additional information about him can be pieced together from the in-character messages and playlists Jason Charles Miller put together about the character for the Critter community.
* BackStab: Sneak Attack!
* BladeOnAStick: His choice of weapon is a stiletto spear.
* TheCameo: Appears briefly at the start of The Screw Job.
* ConnectedAllAlong: Maybe to Campaign 2. In the semi-canonical message that Jason Charles Miller recorded for the ''Dalen's Closet One-Shot'' he mentioned he had a newborn son and was thinking of calling him [[Characters/CriticalRoleWildemountCampaign Fjord]]. It's likely this was just a joke but some fans seriously began to question if Garthok and his wife could've been Fjord's parents before he ended up in the Driftwood Asylum orphanage; Garthok's line of work was dangerous and could've easily resulted in leaving his child parentless and his son would've been born roughly around the same time Fjord was.
* EnemyMine: Garthok teamed up with Vox Machina back when their relationship with the Clasp was still fairly neutral. However, even back then he made it clear their alliance was temporary until he reunited with his organisation.
* EvenMooksHaveLovedOnes: In the grand scheme of things he's little more than a small-time killer in the employ of the Spirelings of the Clasp but the in-character message Jason Charles Miller recorded prior to the ''Dalen's Closet One-Shot'' reveals that Garthok now has a wife and newborn son.
* LastChanceHitPoint: Half-Orcs have a racial ability where, once per battle, they may shrug off a knock-out blow (i.e. one that would reduce them to zero hit points) and remain at a single hit point instead.
* LoveHurts: Before finding his true calling as an assassin, Garthok tried to give love a chance with Rahetah, a half-orc woman he met from the Shalesteps. He thought he'd found someone just like him but after 3 weeks of a “long con,” she managed to rob him of all his possessions including his only memory of his father, a magical dagger.
* ReligionOfEvil: Jason Charles Miller revealed that Garthok is a devout follower of The Ruiner - a chaotic evil god whose followers live to destroy, pillage and slaughter.
* StealthyColossus: Jason made his character a rogue, despite Half-Orcs being typically large, physically dominating and distinctly un-sneaky.
* StoutStrength: His highest stat is his strength at 18. He's even stronger than Grog was at the time.
* TheSneakyGuy: As befitting a rogue, he is sneaky, but he works in a grup with a lot of sneaky people, so this he is not ''the'' sneaky guy.
* TheSocialDarwinist: The playlist Jason Charles Miller put together for Garthok and his devotion to The Ruiner establish the character as this. He believes only the strong survive, however, he's fully aware that the strong can get careless and become the hunted.
* TheBigGuy: As a Half-Orc he is rather large, and acts as muscle (stealthy muscle!) for the Clasp.
* ThievesGuild: The Clasp is described by Percy as a "shadow infrastructure" for Emon, and Garthk is a member of it.
* TragicKeepsake: He used to have a magical dagger to remind him of his father. He doesn't have it by the time he appears in the campaign since it was stolen by a former lover.

!!The Clasp
The Clasp is a group of underground rogues and other ne'er-do-wells who reside in Emon. Vax has a complicated and troubled history with the organisation and may have been a member, though he is unwilling to offer details and holds a mutual distrust for the other members he's met. Generally Vox Machina encounters the Clasp while one or both groups are engaged in some shady activity such as smuggling, burglary, or hiding/hunting fugitives. At least one high-ranking member has been killed fighting the party and their interactions are extremely tense - though calmed by the prospect of gold.

The inside halfling for the Clasp, Devan is a self-serving [[TheGamblingAddict gambling addict]] related to Adelaide Bluebutton (for better or worse). The Clasp intended to use that relationship (and the knowledge of Adelaide's estate) to infiltrate and rob the Shrew.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: The only indications of her intent to betray Dren after they betray the rest comes from Liam's narration at the start. Laura plays her as just reciprocating the awkward crush on Dren. [[spoiler: After she reveals her secret, Laura told Ashly "I didn't want to! (pointing to Liam) HE MADE ME!" showing how hard it was for Laura to portray Devan given what Liam told her (and when she tried to get out of it pre-game, he wouldn't, insisting, "No, you're all bad people.").]]
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler: The first member of the team to die, killed at the hands of Tarvis. But she ''was'' planning on betraying and killing Dren later. Though Dren never knows this because Devan's killed before she can give any hints of this by Tarvis.]]
* BlackMagicianGirl: The only primary spellcaster of the team, but nowhere near composed enough to be a LadyOfBlackMagic.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She acts like a NiceGirl outwardly, but she's really only out for herself.
* {{Foil}}: To Vex'ahlia, Laura's main character. Both are greedy and related to people with power, but Vex has a clear head and people she loves dearly - Devan lacks all of the above.
* TheGamblingAddict: How Devan got into this mess in the first place. In a drunken gambling session, she shot off her mouth about how well she knew the Shrew's Estate. So The Clasp [[TrappedByGamblingDebts bought up her debts]] and gave her a choice: help guide a team to rob the Shrew, or die.
* TheMole: Played With - As the granddaughter of the Shrew, Devan certainly knows her way around her Grandmother's Estate. The problem is that the Shrew and her are having a bit of a tiff.
* TheVamp: Devan has Dren wrapped around her little finger and plans to use her to kill the rest of the team, then kill her and run.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness:
** The party, sans Dren, decide to kill her as soon as she leads them to their goal, [[spoiler:Tarvis succeeding in it]].
** Attempted to be on the giving end of this, planning on killing Dren if they succeeded in killing the rest of the party.

Delweth is a loyal member of the Clasp with a few magic tricks up her sleeve. Unfortunately for Tarvis, she isn't loyal to him and doesn't much care for being passed over while he flourishes.
----
* DarkActionGirl: Delweth is a very effective fighter who threatens to turn Devan into a skirt or a hat.
* HyperCompetentSidekick: When Tarvis fails due to bad rolls, she usually succeeds in his stead.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Calls out Dren for betraying the group even though Delweth was planning on betraying and killing Tarvis and likely the rest of the party after finishing their mission.
* PragmaticVillainy: Unlike Dren, who doesn't do a good job of hiding her intentions to betray the group, Delweth acts perfectly friendly to Tarvis, even helping him on occasion, and doesn't even use the inter-party fight at the end as an opportunity to kill him. Unfortunately, biding her time didn't pay off, as [[spoiler: The Shrew returned and killed everyone before she could betray Tarvis.]]
* TheStarscream: Delweth [[TheResenter resents Tarvis]] and intends to use the heist as a cover to kill him.

-->'''Race:''' Half Orc
-->'''Class:''' Rogue (Assassin)

Spireling Shenn's apprentice and leader of the team, Tarvis is destined for great things in the Clasp and trusted with the true objective of the heist - Adelaide Bluebutton's ledger.
----
* AmusingInjuries: Whips himself in the eye due to a Natural 1 attack roll.
* ButtMonkey: Travis rolls the majority of the Natural 1-s for the entire night, making Tarvis look... underwhelming.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Sure, Tarvis, kill the only one with the map in her head and the only one who knows how to get through her grandmother's security measures. It's not like it will make one of your own turn on you, will it? It's not like your mark will catch up to you and land a TotalPartyKill, Right? [[OhCrap Wait, They Both DID?!]] LaserGuidedKarma leading to NiceJobFixingItVillain.
* {{Foil}}: To Grog, Travis's main character. Both are big and imposing, but Tarvis is very smart, very sly, and very... not good in a fight, thanks to some bad rolls. Grog has none of these problems.
* GeniusBruiser: Tarvis may be Half-Orc, but he's got an Intelligence of 18.
* OhCrap: When [[spoiler: Dren shreds the ledger that was his true target after he kills Devan in front of her.]]
* SinisterScimitar: His primary weapon, though his results with it are... less that spectacular. [[spoiler: He first accidentally flings it across the room with one Natural 1, then breaks it in half with another.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: To the Clasp, he is noted for being completely loyal and because of this and his skills is being groomed for success.
* WhipItGood: His secondary weapon of choice. He's slightly more competent with this one, though that isn't saying much. [[spoiler: He does finally get his act together and strangle Dren with it, though.]]

!!!Played by Creator/SamRiegel

-->'''Race:''' Dwarf
-->'''Class:''' Rogue (Thief)

Obby the Rat is a childhood friend of Tarvis and fellow member of the Clasp. He has no ulterior motives - he thinks the heist is going to go off without a hitch.
----
* BadassMustache: Appropriately for Sam, Obby has a mustache to rival Burt Reynolds.
* ButtMonkey: Not quite to Tarvis levels, but he makes a mention that he "is used as punishment for others." No one but Tarvis says his name right.
* TheCameo: He shows up again in Sam's "Bar Room Blitz" one-shot, placing it either before or in an alternate universe from his first appearance.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Even after Dren betrays the party, Obby shows concern for her. He tells her how Devan will betray her if she goes with her, and at one point, tries to convince Tarvis to spare Dren.
* FamilyValuesVillain: More Anti Hero then villain but Obby takes family very seriously. He mentions that he hates his wife, his wife's mother, grandmother and great-grandmother but they're family so he cares for them.
* IKnewIt: [[spoiler: Once Laura admits to Ashly that she "was going to fucking betray you" during revealing the secrets segment after the end, Sam goes "Obby called it." Though to add extra zing, Travis snarks "You are NOT the father!"]]
* MultipleChoicePast: Has multiple explanations for why he's called "Obby the Rat".
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: His real name is apparently ''Obenthal''. No one calls him that.
* ProperlyParanoid: Obby warns Dren not to trust Devan after the two betray the party, since Devan has already proven to be the type to betray her family. The audience knows he's completely right: Devan is planning to kill Dren later. But Sam was unaware of this at the time.
* TheSneakyGuy: Has the special ability to perform Sleight-Of-Hand as a Bonus Action after attacking.
* SheepInSheepsClothing: His secret is... he has no secrets. Because Liam thought that would be funny.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Downplayed. Obby is the only PC with no secrets or intentions to betray the rest of the team.
* UndyingLoyalty: Obby has been friends with Tarvis since childhood and would do anything for him.

!!Vox Moronica
Appearing in Episode 12 and the charity special "Critical Trolls for Extra Life", Vox Moronica, also known as "The Good, The Rad, and The Nubbly", are a team of adventurers formed by Snugglelord to aid him in his quest. They are a group of special guest characters who have had a series of comical misadventures together. Originally the group was formed when Snugglelord hired everyone to act as his bodyguards as they made their way to Roch Mar to find "The Chat Room", a temple which holds the secrets of how to enter the realm of the Overlord. Secretly, Snugglelord knows it is actually one of the Overlord's vaults. NOTE: Vox Moronica is in no way affiliated with Vox Machina.

In the charity special, the original trio were joined by three new characters played by series regulars.

[[folder:In General]]
* AntiHeroTeam: To be honest, it would be a stretch to call ANY of them heroic since they are so greedy and unconcerned by the harm they do to others.
* BadassCrew: They try to give off the ''appearance'' of a tough and skilled adventurer party, but they are far more bumbling.
* GoldFever: The group is made up of mercenaries, and the only reason they have remained banded together is because of the coin Snugglelord provides.
* KnightKnaveAndSquire: The three members fit this well.
** Snugglelord (Knight): The most insightful of the group. Then again this isn't saying much.
** Ulfgar Fireforge (Knave): Cares only about money and enjoys violence.
** Salty Pete (Squire): He is the most lighthearted and relaxed of the crew.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: They are, a dishonest tiefling who wears a unicorn onesie, a greedy and violent mountain dwarf, and a pirate hill dwarf. At the end of the episode, they add an old crone of a halfling who plays the violin.

* BlueBlood: He was high status in his homeland. "lord" is part of his name, after all.
* ConsummateLiar: Zac said he put all his points into skills used for lying to people.
* DealWithTheDevil: He made a pact with an infernal creature called "The Overlord" in exchange for his warlock powers.
* GrotesqueCute: A red Tiefling with demonic powers and no regard for anyone other than him. Oh, he also wears a unicorn onesie.
* IncomingHam: As soon as Zack says this, you know what kind of character he's going to play.

* PlayingWithFire: He has a number of flame based spells. Also as a Tiefling, he has resistance to it.
* SquishyWizard: As per most spellcasters, he is useless for battle outside of spellcasting. He often tries his best to charm or intimidate his way out of combat.

* GoldFever: Says that he'll do anything for a buck. He will gladly put himself (and others) in danger for the pursuit of wealth.
* HiddenDepths: After coming across a small child, he immediately adopts him. He always acts as a proud father [[spoiler: and then mother]] to his son [[spoiler: who quickly became his daughter.]]
* ICallItVera: He refers to his right sword as "Regina" and his left sword as "Linda".

!!The Goblins
Starring in "The Goblins: A Critical Role Pathfinder One-Shot", this ragtag crew are members of the Birdcruncher Tribe, so named for their talent for trapping birds and eating them raw. The one-shot centers on their "quest" to obtain a "boom-boom rock" from a local town festival for their elder, and [[HilarityEnsues all the hilarious misadventures and failures that occur along the way.]]

* LaughablyEvil: They may be {{Villain Protagonist}}s, but their antics are ''hilarious''.
* TheRival: Their whole tribe is one to the Seven Tooth Tribe, who also want the stone. From what we see of the episode's ending, the Seven Tooth Tribe [[EvilerThanThou appears to be a lot more brutal]].
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Calling the group "friends" would be a gross overstatement. [[spoiler: When Grizznak falls unconscious, he is almost thrown into the stewpot for dinner, or outright abandoned in the human town.]]
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: In-game, each of the players gets a "Goblin Song" they can choose to sing at any point in the game for a re-roll, especially giving themselves advantage on the check. All are used over the course of the session [[spoiler: and with the exception of Taliesin, all of their rolls get ''worse'']].

* VillainProtagonist: Naturally, being [[AlwaysChaoticEvil Goblins]] and all, they are vicious little creatures who are the stars of this particular campaign.
* VillainSong: The "Goblin Songs" are characteristic for each stupid evil goblin. Piglet's is about her love of smashing, Snizzler's has a lot of explosions, Mezek's is a threat for alcohol, Grizznak is bragging, and Browntooth is about how he prefers hiding and backstabbing to direct conflict.

* CaptainErsatz: He’s effectively the Exandrian equivalent to Franchise/{{Batman}}.
* CombatPragmatist: Mechanically, at least. As a Rogue, he gets Sneak Attack whenever he has advantage on an attack roll; as a Barbarian, he can use Reckless Attack to give himself advantage on an attack roll whenever he chooses - so he is, effectively, able to give himself Sneak Attack at his own volition. He can also use a combination of Rage & Uncanny Dodge to shrug off any attacks he takes.
