On top of that, since Fou-Lu is considered to be an Ice dragon, he has an innate weakness to fire, something that the Empire is well aware of. General Yohm first move upon Fou-Lu revival was to set the forest on fire, and each creatures he summons specialize in fire attacks.

* AccidentalPervert: In two of the {{Bowdlerised}} scenes.
* TheBerserker: Same as in ''III''. [[spoiler:Now one needs to find all Endless in order to control the Kaiser Dragon.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: Subverted at the start of the game. Nina falls down a cliff side and Ryu jumps heroically to her aid...and just then notices Nina has ''wings''. Cue Ryu's smacking the ground face-first.
* [[spoiler:BigShutUp: Arguably Ryu does this to Fou-lu when choosing the "Good End" option after Fou-lu's TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: When [[spoiler:Rasso slaughters the innocent civilians of Chek]], he falls into an HeroicBSOD. This is especially apparent in the manga adaptation.
* ElementalPowers: Back to form-specific elements:
** PlayingWithFire: Wyvern/Wyrm
** DishingOutDirt: Behemoth/Mammoth
** BlowYouAway: Myrmydon/Knight
** NonElemental: Aura & Kaiser
* FoeYay: With Fou-lu.
** In Japan, this is in fact ''such'' a popular pairing (despite the fact it counts as either {{Twincest}} or even {{Selfcest}}) that it's even earned its own PortmanteauCoupleName.
* HellishPupils: The manga's depiction of the Dragon's Eye.
* HeroicMime: [[spoiler:At least until the ending.]]
** Averted in the manga adaptation, which has him speak frequently and greatly expands on his personality.
* [[spoiler:IWillFindYou: Ryu searching for Fou-lu in the manga adaptation.]]
* KatanasAreJustBetter: First Ryu to ditch the european swords for a katana. Likely as part of the setting switch from [[FantasyCounterpartCulture Medieval Europe to Ancient China]].
* KappeiYamaguchi: Ryu's seiyû.
* [[spoiler:LiteralSplitPersonality]]
* LivingMacGuffin: Ryu ultimately becomes this.
* NakedOnArrival
* PlayingWithFire: Three of his dragon forms are fire-type.
* [[RedOniBlueOni The Red Oni to Fou-lu's Blue Oni]]
* [[spoiler:ThisIsUnforgivable: In the manga version, Ryu screams "I won't forgive you" during his HeroicBSOD...right before unleashing '''''THE KAISER DRAGON'''''.]]
* [[spoiler:TwinTelepathy: With Fou-lu, probably closer to Twin Empathy. Depicted more blatantly in the manga (especially so starting around chapter 19) and is actually the major driving plot-point.]]
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Seriously, this is pretty much ''contractually obligated'' for a Ryu in a BreathOfFire game. ''Any'' Ryu.

!! Nina

* BlowYouAway
* CoolDownHug: Actually [[spoiler:bringing Ryu down from KAISER RAEG by this, in fact!]]
* TheHeart: Of the team, she is the most affected by the suffering she sees, and it is she who actually recruits the other members (except for Ershin).
* IWillFindYou: The game starts out with Nina and Cray searching for her lost sister Elina.
* TheMedic
* MoralityPet: Serves as one for Cray, in the beginning. One suspects that [[spoiler: the only reason the party got to six members at all is because Nina kept telling Cray to give them a chance.]] Cray outgrows the need for one eventually.
* {{Narrator}}: Each chapter ends with a short narration from her.
* ThePollyanna
* RoyalBlood
** RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: In her case, go in search of her lost sister Elina. And [[spoiler:calm down raging '''''KAISER DRAGON''''' mode Ryu. And in the manga, have an IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight moment that slaps sense into Ryu ''when the latter is in Infini's mind''.]]
* SpoiledSweet: She only wants to do right, but she is ''very'' naive about the world.
* TeamMom
* WingedHumanoid
* WhiteMagicianGirl

!! Cray

* TheBigGuy: In that he's the biggest party member. Personality-wise, he's closer to TheLancer
* CarryABigStick
* DaChief
* DeadpanSnarker: Has his moments.
* DishingOutDirt
* [[spoiler: HalfHumanHybrid: His mother is human, his father (the previous chieftain) is Woren.]]
* [[spoiler: HeroicBSOD: In the game, after he mercy-kills Elina. He ''does not speak again'' until the final dungeon.]]
* HotBlooded: Somthing of a problem for him and his tribe. To his credit, he does try to control his temper, with varying success.
* IdiotBall: He's no DumbMuscle, but he still grabs firm hold of this at times, mostly in the beginning.
* IsshinChiba: Cray's seiyû.
* IWillFindYou: Searching for Elina along with Nina.
* ItsPersonal: [[spoiler: With Yuna, after he finds out what he did to Elina.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In the beginning, he's really something of a bully. [[spoiler: He all but forcibly conscripts Ryu into the party because of his prophetic dreams leading to Elina, and when they don't pan out, considers ditching him. He also beats up Marlok's bodyguard, forces his way into his house, and demands that he give information about Elina while offering nothing in return. His behavior toward the other members of the party, especially Ursula, isn't that great either, and he often ignores their needs entirely unless [[MoralityPet Nina speaks up for them]]. And that's not going into his illegal entry into TheEmpire, which caused a lot of people a lot of problems which he never apologized for.]] Despite all this, he really does care for Nina and is protective of both her and the party in his own way. And, through the wonders of CharacterDevelopment ([[spoiler:and a few rounds of BreakTheCutie]]) he pretty much drops the "jerk" part completely by the end.
* KangarooCourt: The Ludian court isn't exactly on his side when he's on trial. To be fair, [[StrawmanHasAPoint they arent entirely wrong, either.]]
* LoveHurts: And how.
* LoveRedeems: Cray has his own experience with this [[spoiler:when he must ultimately euthanise Elina with the Dragonslayer.]]
* MoralityPet: Nina, in the beginning. One suspects that [[spoiler: the only reason the party got to six members at all is because Nina kept telling Cray to give them a chance.]] He outgrows the need for one eventually.

* OnlySaneMan: Feels like this most times.
* PapaWolf: In regards to Nina. Considerably more explicit in the manga.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Chieftain of the entire Woren nation, at that.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: His attitude concerning his search for Elena. He learns to grow out of it, though.
* ShoutOut: His ultimate combination magic is named "Weretiger" in reference to Rei's feral form.
** Also, at one point, he says Rei's [[MemeticMutation infamous]] {{catchphrase}}.
* TeamDad
* WhatTheHellHero: He faced a LOT of chewing out from the Ludian court for [[spoiler:his illegal entry into TheEmpire and his loss of a priceless heirloom and symbol of the kingdom.]] His response was to throw it right back.
** Ursula and Ershin also bluntly call him on bad leadership decisions.

* JerkAss: [[spoiler: Deis was hardly warm to Ershin when it was revealed that it had a mind of its own. She absolutely refused to go back inside, cruelly insisting it was never alive and that it should "go back to being a suit of armor," and then leaving it alone in Chek. * UseYourHead: Following in Peco's example.
* [[spoiler:WhatMeasureIsANonHuman]]

!! Scias

* AlcoholHic: Unfortunately, {{Bowdlerised}} in the English version to a stuttering issue.
* AnIcePerson[=/=]HealingHands
* [[spoiler:BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: It is implied in the game (and even more in the manga) that the reason Scias left the employ of Ludia was because he was touched by Nina's optimism and faith in him.]]
* BlindingBangs: Doesn't stop him from being damn good with a katana, though.
* CaptainObvious: Scias' reaction to [[spoiler:the discovery that "Fairy Drops" are the SolidGoldPoop of actual fairies.]]
* DrunkenMaster: Scias' original characterization in the Japanese version had him constantly falling-down plastered, and still pulling off all the fancpanciest of moves he does in battle. Imagine what he could accomplish sober.
* DummiedOut: Scias naturally-gained "Analyse" spell was removed from the english version. It can still be assigned to any character with a GameShark, though in a buggy state.
* FlashStep: His attack animation.
* [[spoiler:HeelFaceTurn: He entered the party in the employ of Ludia to spy on the party, but he reneges and returns the money.]]
* HiddenHeartOfGold: He tries to project the image of a Badass mercenary, but his campfire conversation and certain other events reveal that he's not nearly as devoid of concience as he pretends.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Much better if they give him an extra attack.
* ShellShockedVeteran

* EvenEvilHasStandards: During her very brief time as an antagonist, she shows disgust with Rasso when he [[spoiler:slaughters the women and children of Chek.]]
** [[invoked]][[spoiler:In the manga, she explicitly describe's Rasso's actions as unforgivable and begs Nina to not think of all Fou Empire soldiers as being similarly monstrous.]]
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Fond of delivering these to Cray.
* TheGunslinger
* IWillFindYou: [[spoiler:At the game's end, she goes looking for her foster-father General Rhun.]]
** In the manga, [[spoiler:she goes searching for [[KarmaHoudini Yuna]], presumably to hunt him down and kill him.]]
* KumikoWatanabe: Ursula's seiyû.
* LadyOfWar
* PettingZooPeople
* PlayingWithFire
* SixthRanger
* StealthHiBye: Her victory sprite has her disappear in a ninja-style SmokeOut.
* TheComicallySerious: She smiles exactly ''once'' during the whole game.
* {{Tsundere}}: Specifically, type A.
* [[spoiler:UnwittingPawn: The manga ''explicitly'' depicts Ursula as one regarding Elina's fate.]]
* WhenSheSmiles:
* [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Why Did It Have To Be SEA LICE]]: Especially hilarious as sea lice are harmless isopods--and ''Nina even points this out''.
** This in fact SO traumatises Ursula in regards to sea travel that [[spoiler:when Khan knocks on the bottom of the ship later, Ursula is convinced it's actually the sea lice who are OUT TO GET HER.]]

!! Fou-lu

* [[ABoyAndHisX A]] GodEmperor [[ABoyAndHisX and his shishi/foo-dogs]]
** [[spoiler:One of which he literally sics on ''the entirety of the Fou Empire'' in his WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds period after returning to Chedo.]]
* AnIcePerson: His main dragon form is ice/water-type. He's also weak against fire in general.
* AntiVillain
* {{Badass}}
* {{Bishonen}}
* [[RedOniBlueOni The Blue Oni to Ryu's Red Oni]]
* TheCameo: Appears as a card in the ''Heroes and Heralds'' mode of ''[[MarvelVsCapcom3 Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3]]''.
* CrutchCharacter: You only control him during his segments of the story, and he's all you'll need. Fou-Lu starts off with a very powerful dragon form, and is at such a high level that despite soloing battles he isn't likely to gain any levels, nor does he even need to.
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: TheEmpire doesn't want him around and makes repeated attempts to kill him, which in the end drives his mad and causes him to burn the empire's capital to the ground, in addition to of course, killing nearly everyone sent after.
* DrivenToVillainy: At first a fairly decent warrior god, but then TheEmpire that he built keeps trying to kill him after he awakes, putting him through some traumatic experiences, to say the least.
* DualWielding: During the final fight.
* ElementalPowers: He gets ice over Ryu's fire, but otherwise he gets similar forms[[note]]He can also use all of Ryu's other forms, but outside of Behemoth it's only possible through cheating devices.[[/note]]
** AnIcePerson[=/=]MakingASplash: Serpent/Peist
** DishingOutDirt: Behemonth/Mammoth
** NonElemental: Astral & Tyrant, [[spoiler:plus the event-only Infini]]
* EnergyWeapon: He conjures a sword of PureEnergy to attack.
* EvilCounterpart: [[spoiler:To Ryu. Turns out he's not really evil at all, though.]]
* GodEmperor: One of the few cases where the GodEmperor [[spoiler:started out as a god ''first''.]]
* [[spoiler:HeelFaceTurn: In the manga ending and ''arguably'' in the [[MultipleEndings Good End]] of the game.]]
** [[spoiler:SparedByTheAdaptation: In the manga ending, Fou-lu is shown to be alive in the manga adaptation and lives with Ryu travelling the world. The manga ends with the two heading towards Wyndia, Fou-lu wishing to learn what Ryu sees in humanity.]]
** [[spoiler:[[RedemptionEqualsDeath Redemption Equals]] SplitPersonalityMerge: After the final battle in the game's [[MultipleEndings Good End]], he admits that whilst HumansAreTheRealMonsters they are also "magnificent" and is absorbed into Ryu.]]
* HellishPupils: In the manga version. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] as the manga in ''general'' uses cat-like eyes to denote someone is a dragon.
* IsshinChiba: Fou-lu's seiyû.
* KingInTheMountain: Technically, Fou-lu is this to the Fou Empire (what with being summoned as their literal GodEmperor and prophesying his own "resurrection" before going into torpor for 600 years). Unfortunately, TheEmpire that he happens to be the KingInTheMountain ''of'' wants him quite ''dead''--thus becoming [[SubvertedTrope a particularly brutal subversion of the trope]].
* IKnowYourTrueName: Fou-lu ends up a ''victim'' of this...'''twice over'''. [[spoiler: Once during the botched summoning that called him to the world (and split him in half), the other via Yohm having a bit too much knowledge re name magic.]]
* [[spoiler:LaughingMad: After he finds out poor Mami was used as a [[SacrificialLamb Fantastic Nuclear Warhead]]. The manga's depiction of this is ''especially'' disturbing, in part because ''Ryu also feels Fou-lu losing his mind via TwinTelepathy after having had his own [[HeroicBSOD Kaiser Dragon Incident]]''.]]
* LoveHurts: Learns this the hard way when [[spoiler:Mami gets used in The Carronade.]]
** Complete with BloodFromTheMouth [[spoiler:and MORE than a bit of going LaughingMad when he finds out Mami was used as a literal human warhead for a FantasticNuke.]]
* LoveRedeems: Once he meets up with Mami, he starts down this path. [[spoiler:Then Yuna brutally tortures her and uses her as a sacrifice for the Carronade. Ouch.]]
* NiceHat: He gets one after he [[spoiler:kills Soniel and becomes emperor again.]]
* [[spoiler:SpeakOfTheDevil: A ''self inflicted'' version (in order to avoid Yohm's IKnowYourTrueName where he refuses to tell Mami his real name.]]
* SympatheticPOV: The player controls him at several points throughout the game, allowing them to witness various PetTheDog moments and humanizing scenes.
* [[spoiler:TechnicallyASmile: Fou-lu's character status sprite when he [[OffWithHisHead beheads Soniel]].]]
** In the Comic Blade Avarus manga [[spoiler:[[http://www.onemanga.com/Utsurowazarumono_-_Breath_of_Fire_IV/19/34/ the last page of Chapter 19]] has another example (which, of note, occurs right after the manga's depiction of the above scene). Fou-lu is holding Mami's bells, begging Ryu to hurry up and come, whilst giving a postively ''feral'' smile. And this is ''after'' being run through with the Dragonslayer.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:Fou-lu gives one that is more of a "The Reason Humans Suck Speech"; this is actually how you start the decision path on which of the MultipleEndings to go with.]]
** [[spoiler:The manga (in its TakeAThirdOption Ending) starts with Fou-lu going into his "The Reason Humans Suck Speech", and Ryu agreeing and choosing to go with what ''appears'' to be the Bad End. He gets better, though.]]
* TraumaCongaLine: All the way down [[spoiler:to frank WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds by the time all is said and done with.]]
* [[spoiler:TwinTelepathy: With Ryu. Again, closer to Twin Empathy and considerably more explicit in the manga version.]]
* UnwantedRevival: The Fou Empire's leadership in general sees him as this. [[spoiler:This even goes to the point of official propoganda declaring him the "[[SelfFulfillingProphecy Dragon Of Doom]]", and Yohm explicitly states his reawakening is an UnwantedRevival.]]
* YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe: And combined with the RoyalWe, at that.
** Likely Capcom USA's attempt to deal with the original {{Keigo}}, though rather more exaggerated in English.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Young with long, white hair; naturally he is a bad dude.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: [[spoiler:once TheEmpire ''literally'' Dropped A Mami On Him.]]

!! Bunyan/Babadel

* BadassBeard
* TheBigGuy
* CoolOldGuy
* GentleGiant
* RetiredBadass: Served during the Great War.
* {{Mentors}}: Following in his predecesor's steps.
* MightyLumberjack
* MythologyGag: This time, the traslators even picked it up and carried out the DubNameChange from ''III''.
* ShellShockedVeteran
** ZenSurvivor

!! Yuna

* BigBad
* BodyHorror: His speciality.
* BreakTheCutie: His ''other'' specialty.
* DirtyCoward
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Acts as one to Emperor Soniel. Exactly what he really wants is never made clear in the game, but the manga implies that he has his eyes on the throne.
* EvilIsNotPacifist: Subverted. He claims to be a "pacifist" and a "man of the arts", but this is just an excuse to save his own ass.
* EvilSorcerer: Extra emphasis on the evil.
* FanNickname: "FUCKING YUNA!" seems to be turning into one on this very wiki.
* KarmaHoudini: Probably one of the most notable examples of this in video games, especially since he pulls it off ''twice.'' [[spoiler:He's directly responsible for nearly every bad thing that happens in the game, and to get the best ending, ''you have to let him get away with it.'']]
** [[spoiler: To make it even worse, the epilogue makes it very clear that he's already planning to rebuild his operation and do it all again.]]
* LoveHurts: It will if he has anything to say about it. Suffice it to say, Yuna is the ''last'' person you want to introduce your significant other to.
* MadScientist: He has actually been described as Breath of Fire's answer to [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII Hojo]], which pretty much hits the nail on the head. To some, Yuna is even more detestable due to being a KarmaHoudini.
* MeaningfulName: Yuna translates to "night", which is a nice reflection on the type of person he is.
* NiceHat
* SissyVillain
* StupidSexyFlanders: While he doesn't exactly look bad in the original game, the manga plays up his appearance and makes him more handsome. Justified since young women are a target audience of the publisher.
* TreacherousAdvisor
* TheUnfought
* VerbalTic: ''Yaa.''
* VillainTeleportation: If not for this little trick...

!! General Yohm

* AntiVillain: Arguably.
** The manga makes rather a better case for this interpretation.
* TheBeastmaster: He [[SummonMagic summons mystical creatures to do the dirty job.]]
* TheDragon: To Emperor Soniel.
* {{Gonk}}
* IKnowYourTrueName: [[spoiler: Yohm engages in this in a ''very literal'' sense with Fou-lu--even explicitly commenting to him that ''the very act of speaking Fou-lu's name sends ripples in the world to such an extent Yohm can be inevitably led to wherever he is''. Yes, name magic can be used as essentially ''radar to find Endless'', for values of sufficiently powerful Endless.]]
* JustFollowingOrders: [[spoiler:Yohm even admits as much before committing suicide by immolation.]]
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens
* MyCountryRightOrWrong
* TheUnfought: Like Rasso and Yuna, he is never actually fought during the course of the game. Given his age and physical state, though, it's probably justified.

!! Captain Rasso

* FanNickname: "Rasshole", for [[KickTheDog obvious reasons]].
* MadeOfIron: He breaks a sword by ''it striking his face''. And it only leaves a scar.
** MinorInjuryOverreaction: it convinced Rasso to hunt Ryu down ''before'' figuring out the latter was the one he was looking for.
* MarionetteMaster: He never fights, letting his summoned {{Animated Armor}}s to do the chore.
* SissyVillain (bordering CampGay): Rasso speaks in a ''very'' effeminate way in Japanese (to the point it can be described as the Japanese equivalent of CampGay) and also has rather effeminate mannerisms. In the 4-komas included in the manga [[spoiler:Ryu even refers to him as "okama"--which was translated to "THE GIRLY MAN" in the FanTranslation.]]
* ShoutOutThemeNaming: Rasso's three robots are named "Joh", "Ymechaf" and "Ight". Put together, they form "Joy Mecha Fight", a NES fighting game.
* TheUnfought: Even though you fight his summons, you never get to battle him directly. [[spoiler:The closest one gets is burnination by Kaiser Dragon, and that's not exactly ''controllable''. Still very satisfying to see him annihilated by Kaiser though.]]

!! General Rhun

* CoolOldGuy
* ParentalSubstitute: Raised Ursula.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: In his short screentime. Didn't deter the fandom, though.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: In one of the planned endings, [[spoiler:he would have been the one to strangle Yuna.]]

!! Emperor Soniel

* BackStab
* TheEmperor: One of the ''very'' few examples where a mortal, rather than the GodEmperor, qualifies.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:Lost His Head Back-Stabbing The God-Emperor. ''Especially'' explicit in the manga.]]
* OffWithHisHead: [[spoiler:The result for Soniel of the BackStab. A victim of {{Bowdlerisation}} in English, and treated to a Crowning Moment Of TakeThat in the BloodierAndGorier manga adaptation.]]
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter
* NiceHat: [[spoiler:At least your decapitated head is stylin', Soniel.]]
* {{Pride}}: Especially apparent [[spoiler:when he pulls the BackStab on Fou-lu bragging that he'd killed a ''god''.]]
* RoyalWe
* [[spoiler:WeHardlyKnewYe: Has a grand total of about two scenes before Fou-lu slices his head off.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler:Soniel's ultimate decapitation was, as noted, censored from non-Japanese versions of the game, thus resulting in this happening re his storyline in English versions.]]
** [[spoiler:We're not shown how it happens, but it's made pretty obvious that Fou-lu kills him.]]

!! Mami

* [[AmericanAccents Appalachian Accent]]: With a wee bit of Scots thrown in for good measure ([[JustifiedTrope justified]] in that ''really'' deep Appalachian English DOES still use some Scots idioms like "ye ken").
** Probably Capcom USA's attempt to deal with the original TohokuRegionalAccent, though again (much like how Fou-lu's {{Keigo}} got turned into YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe) a ''bit'' of an exaggeration compared to the original Japanese.
* CountryMouse
* HappilyEverAfter: What Mami was essentially hoping for. [[spoiler:''Tragically'' subverted.]]
* LoveHurts: [[spoiler:Quite fatally for her in fact--unfortunately for poor Mami, the [[FantasticNuke Carronade]] literally ''operates'' on this principle.]]
* [[spoiler:SacrificialLamb: For the Carronade.]]
* [[spoiler:StuffedIntoTheFridge: Or in this case, the Carronade. Fou-lu's reaction when he finds what ''caused'' the hex he was targeted with is pretty much classic for this trope, though.]]
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Do ''not'' insult or try to drive off her Ryong in her presence.

!! Kahn

* AffablyEvil
* ArchEnemy: Thinks of himself as this in relation to the main party. ''[[UnknownRival Thinks]]'' [[UnknownRival being the operative word here.]]
* DumbMuscle
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The three times you encounter him, he was working under a Master. Try to guess what he becomes after giving up on the party.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain
* LargeHam
* WalkingShirtlessScene
